In my mind, that's a feat in itself, and it still gives me a melancholic, atmospheric feeling whenever I play it.

I always thought that when Bowser stole the Super Happy Tree, all the Yoshis died. The pre menu prologue refers to the Yoshis we play as as “the surviving eggs.”
So as a child, I thought that the game was literally about genocide, and every time I died, the stakes just got higher. That’s also why I thought Yoshi’s voice changed after the game. The adult Yoshis were dead, so we were left with the baby Yoshis and their baby voices.

My favourite level in Yoshi's Story was Tall Tower with the lullaby music, bouncy springs and building block aesthetic. Though towards the end you have to jump across balls where you can literally get smashed on the head by a spiky mace. Who built that tower?! What's the purpose? That comic about Black Yoshi is mind boggling! Black Yoshi was always my favourite because his voice was pitched slightly lower and I found it cuter. In contracts, White Yoshi's voice was slightly higher and I loved the attention to detail they put into that game.

I used to feel terrible and think it was my fault that had happened, so I used to take all the care in the world when playing Yoshis Story.

Some of the enemies' scary designs I think stem from one of the drawbacks of this style: The Uncanny Valley. Especially the larger models for the sky eel, the clown ball, the giant fish, and the health meter really can get creepy when they suddenly appear. They remind me of those creepy quick-cuts to the faces of the train models from Thomas the Tank Engine, as the sharp fast cuts, combined with the loud narration can make some moments terrifying!

It wasn't like you were losing lives, like in most games - you were losing your SIBLINGS. I remember me and my sib would run out of the room in fear?? And my poor/wonderful mom, who put up with our nonsense, because I think she found it to be a good, challenging game, like the side-scrollers on the NES she dug.
"Blarrgh" became a common phrase indicating frustration, named after the creatures of Blargg's Boiler. I'm still creeped out at the little phrase on the story select screen that plays at the end of the main song, that's a reference to something...

finally watching this!! you know, a lot of N64/PS1 era games are considered creepy or uncanny because of the "empty" environments, but this game weirdly always unnerved me the most as a kid even though it isn't 3D at all. even with Yoshi supposed to be for younger audiences, i didn't like playing this game when my older sister wasn't around. some of the musical changes, boss fights/boss themes, and enemy designs/level aesthetics scared me as a youngster.
for me though, the creepiest was always Inviso!! i know his visual design isn't as threatening as some of the others, but the way he could traverse the stage gave me a couple nightmares when i was little. i honestly don't think any videogame ever scared me as much as yoshi's story at that age, which is just so hilarious because even the Shadow Temple in Ocarina of Time didn't really bother me at that age hahahaha

I personally loved the manga-stylized comics from the German Nintendo magazines, and the special edition of Yoshi's Story was one of my favorites for all kind of reasons, but I was quite surprised when I found out that those comic magazines were something the local headquarters of Nintendo Europe/Germany created exclusively for Germany. Like even some of the inside jokes that often times referred to something typically German went too well with the drawings or even depicted something German that I often wondered back then how they would translate this into other languages.
As for the game, man, the whole gameplay confused me back then. As a kid I didn't get the structure of it, since your playthrough had an impact of the different paths, but it wasn't self-explanatory, and overall it added a lot to the confusion that you only had to beat one level of each world. And then there was the conception of not exactly dying but getting your Yoshis kidnapped by the shy guys bit by bit. It was so utterly unsettling and confusing lol.

the enemy designs in this game are *weird*, by far the strangest things nintendo has ever made. it's even better because a lot of them are tucked away towards the end of a stage long after you would have collected enough fruit to continue, so most people probably wouldn't see them. I remember finding a black flying creature with a huge smile in one of the stages, I think the official name for the enemy is "ComBat" and they literally only show up at the end of the stage, right before the pot that warps you to the beginning.

This game was one of the first video games I played as a 3-4 years kid back in 2009/2010 with pokemon stadium and more n64 games
And it's the first video game I completed! 😊 It's still the most video game that is near my heart to this day.
But it was hella creepy back then to a point I couldn't play it some times alone 😅
The enemies, the soundtrack, the graphics it's one of the most creepiest Nintendo games ever
