It's interesting how even the least interesting Paper Mario game still has a decent amount of intriguing things going for it
as someone who was 6 when she first played sticker star and therefore quite enjoyed it, it's nice to see SOME appreciation for this game that I know so many hate in the form of a half an hour video

Same here, and though I now still agree it isn't a very strong game series wise, in a vacuum, it's still a decent game. (The music is peak btw.)
You forgot to mention how after the events of Super Paper Mario, Dimenio was able to utilize the last shadow of his power while controlling the chaos heart to destroy Mario's whole dimension and create Paper Mario Sticker Star as an act of revenge. However, with his limited amount of power left, the worst he could do is make it as bland and "paper thin" in depth as possible by literally curing the entire land. I mean, Dimentio has experience in making his own dimensions as you fight him in his very own dimension while playing Super Paper Mario. With only an ounce of the Chaos Heart's power and his experience as a magic user, Dimentio was able to do this. This curse makes sense too, as in TTYD, curses turned you into papery transformations. These curses were always on a small scale in TTYD, so they didn't do too much to Mario compared to the multiverse destructive force that is the chaos heart. Rogue Port doesn't exist anymore, and neither do any of the other interesting locations from the first 2 games. Sticker Star's plot basically functions as a much, much weaker re-telling of the events of the original Paper Mario. It was essentially a world reset. The Sticker Star and Sticker Commet are essentially the lifeless forms Star Haven and the Star Spirits take. The game hides little reminders of a past life existing, like in the 5-1 trash pit, we see some final letters from Goombella and Parrykarry, but no one is this new world understands what it means. This was probably in Dimentio's best favor because this was probably a fate worse than death for the Mario gang. The Mario characters of this new world have been transformed into tragic characters suffering from a lack of memory of their past life, as characters like Bowser forgot about his development from SPM and even forgot how to talk! Ever wondered why Dimentio also sounded like "dementia", well he basically causes a form of dementia for the whole Mario cast. Over time, Mario's world starts to develop and recover again, as we see in Color Splash and Origami King, even still including references from the first three games, but these are still only left over nods to remind you that a past, better life existed right under their noses, but they were none the wiser. When you take into account Sticker Star's obvious implications and the games that came before it, Sticker Star is actually a deeply provocative game and a storytelling masterpiece, rivaling the likes of TTYD and Super, and it expertly displays its themes in its terrible gameplay and general structure!
I am obviously kidding here, and the developers never thought of this, but can you imagine if this was actually cannon? I mean, it makes sense, right? Honestly, if Nintendo is thinking about going back to Paper Mario's roots, this could potentially become the basis for a 7th Paper Mario game's plot. Like, maybe it involves Mario traveling back in time to prevent this from happening and restoring the world to what it was like before this curse, while also colliding it with the events from the newer games. I am really curious to see where Nintendo takes the story after the remake of TTYD. I am guessing will have to do with the sales of the remake, which is a shame, but it is what it is.
I will accept this as canon.

I would LOVE it if a new sequel game would start Paper Mario in the complete Sticker Star type of world but the magic McGuffins you collect would give Mario back his RPG powers that give you the ability to challenge Dimentio for dominion over all worlds. Maybe bring back Twink as a Star Point in the prologue that you break open and he is the one to tell Mario that reality is all messed up and he has been trapped in there for years. That would be awesome!
This is now canon to me, minus the dementia stuff.
I admit, that's a cool canon. But I like the newer games too much to be of the same mindset. If Paper Mario games are going back to the oldies, it's gonna be really easy to see Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King as just Paper Mario's refuse, one-time mistakes, and an era to be forgotten about, but I do not want that to be the case. Those games matter to people, too.

I like to believe that the modern Paper Mario Trilogy takes place before the first trilogy. The stories and stakes get darker with each game, and Bowser and his dwindling army are gradually reduced as a threat, and he even ends up being a hero in the end.
Each game also seems to give Luigi and Peach more to do in this order.
Origami King ruins this tho. Maybe that happens last?

@WarioTimeWarioTimeWarioTime Actually, if I'm not mistaken, it doesn't. Goombella had written the letter to one of her professors while attending the University of Goom. By the time of The Thousand Year Door, she had already graduated and began a full career as an archeologist.
And Parakarry's letter was just him being a mailman, to which he always had been.
In Origami King, there's an area where you can see photos of Peach from every Paper Mario game, so this can't be the case unfortunately
Amazing work! I can’t believe how many dark themes you squeezed out of the least dark game in the series. It’s the only one with no Boos being swallowed whole, no shadow queen trying to enslave the world, no world ending chaos heart, no shy guys sucking the blood out of npcs, and no major character death. I love your style of video making you have given me inspiration to finally continue my Origami King series, thank you!
there are some things i genuinely like about sticker star, like the mentioned snowman story and overworld puzzle aspect of the game. i think it would've been a good game if they had leaned more on the story and puzzles
Yes! The beginning of the game & the Enigmansion are especially filled with great environmental puzzles, and I agree that leaning into storytelling would've made me appreciate this game so much more. Color Splash and the N64 original were light on plot as well, but the former had a cool concept for a villain w/ the possessive Black Paint and the latter told interesting sub-stories in each chapter. Sticker Star has bits of that, but they're few and far between...it's sad the devs were actively avoiding a complex story, mainly because of that infamous Super Paper Mario survey
What's interesting is that Mr. Blizzard says, "...you'll make ME again, won't you?" He is fully confident that this is possible. It reminds me of the Snowboys of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, except they find melting fun.
Understandable. You never have to go where Nibbles is in a form that Nibbles will attack -- somehow, perhaps, thanks to the power of the "curse", Nibbles doesn't attack Mario when he's being a paper boat -- and if you do, it's one HP, not your entire life.
Something I've always found pretty dark are Kamek's final words in this game: "King Bowser will destroy you!" Not the phrase itself (which is painfully generic, like almost everything else in this game), but the fact that he keeps yelling it over and over until he turns to dust. It always stuck with me.
I agree! While I don't directly talk about the line, I did make sure to at least include a clip of his last words in the video. I'll probably bring it up in the "Dark Aspects of the modern Paper Mario trilogy" compilation I'm putting together!
the most strangely unknown fact bout the Final Bowser fight in Sticker Star, since normally he just dies from infini-jumps,
is that if you take too long, he will start attacking more times per turn.
first Bowser starts attacking twice, then eventually starts attacking 3 times per turn when enough turns have passed.
including Mario getting Crumpled(take x2 damage), in which he just barely survives this onslaught of attacks, this makes the final Bowser the most damaging enemy in Sticker Star from this alone.
too bad almost no one will ever see this unless they goof around like I always do for that fight 🤔
Honestly Nintendo is a master of putting Dark aspects in their games. Take Splatoon series. The time of humans and mammals are over they as humanity destroyed that earth causing ocean water to rise with the last part of humanity being an 2 cats an bear and an fax machine. Everything else is gone we play in the remains of humanity as evolved sea creatures.
Splatoon is a franchise I regrettably never got into, but it's always interested me. The more I hear about the lore the more I want to play it--I know it's one of Nintendo's darkest series which is impressive considering how new the IP is. I'm sure I'll eventually cover it!

@ThaneGaming please do! I find it so interesting because they took shooter mechanics and somehow added just enough that you can also platform with them.
If you do a dark aspects I recommend every game getting their own part, and octo expansion gets its own too. Side order didn't really do much for story so I'd tac that onto the end
Man, I played this game way too much. I actually glitched it and now my file says I started playing in 2011 despite the game not being released yet. Great game, sucks people hate it so much.
Imagine if Sticker Star continued the trend of Paper Mario games progressively becoming darker and was actually *darker* than Super Paper Mario. I don't want to know what Nintendo would have in store for that...
You forgot the part where after you've exorcised the Enigmansion, you can take a portrait of the deceased owner of the mansion, paperize it, and bring him back to life.
As far as the Sticker Comet is concerned, I didn't think it was too odd. PM64 itself is a spiritual continuation of SMRPG, where wishes are granted by the Star Road, which allows any wish from anyone be granted, is a physical star-shaped object that can be interacted with and destroyed, and is looked over by "a higher power" rather than the Star Spirits specifically.
Ot's not that shocking if there are more than one means to grant wishes in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Sticker star was my first paper mario game, I loved it, it has to be one of my favorite paper mario games.

well, I like that you have to collect the attacks (the stickers), because it feels like you have to do something more to prepare for a fight, instead of just leveling up by continually fighting enemy like in some other RPGs. Although, grinding for stickers is a whole other thing, but I feel it's more fun.

I've thought about doing one for so long! I even imagined it as an April Fools' Day video, as I never realized I'd have so much to say about it. The Thousand Year Door remake coming out was the motivation I needed to make it happen!

(I legit thought they were just in a jail cell, and that the screen turning red meant they were trapped forever, not that they were in an oven and were getting cooked alive.)
I came up with a shabby connection between all the wish-granting objects in Mario games. SMRPG's Star Road is the epicenter of wish-granting, but over time, there were more and more wishes to grant. So, the Star Road created the Beanstar, the Dream and Dark Stones, and other objects to assist with that wish-granting. But in the paper world, the Star Road's paper equivalent is Star Haven, and the Star Spirits. And they had the same issue and followed up with the same action. They created the Sticker Star/Comet to help with wish-granting, and they could also be responsible for the thousand-cranes wish magic in Origami King, though that does have real-life origins.
For that mystery code, I’m assuming it’s a nintendo game code a Toad used and threw away. Probably for some company like Shroomtendo or something

Oh! I also read her name as "KerTSI" for the longest time, because I thought it was a pun on "sticker" + "curtsy" (since she's royalty, i thought it made sense). To this day, I wrote "Kertsi" 12 different times in the script, so I had to re-record those lines haha
through this game, after I finally beat it, after years, I didn’t feel like I had fun. The best thing’s about this game is the soundtrack and graphics. everything else feels… at best decent. The game has SO MANY FLAWS, that I can’t give it any better of a rating than.. just ok. OH AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON KERSTI!!!

I don't know if you already have something in mind, but a good pick for Dark Aspects would be the Mario & Luigi series
you forgot to mention the toad that got folded 256 times into a tiny paper scrap. and how wiggler gets stuck as a head unable to move. and the flip flops are kinda creepy too, in an existential sense. they all look the same, and are completely weak too, you have no way of knowing whether you just used something super important or just another jump sticker.
Also when you do the dark aspects of the new paper mario compilation i think it would be good to mention in the color splash section that the black paint was probably used to paint the night sky

Chuggaaconroy discovered the instant death thing on complete accident while trying to make a joke
the royal stickers seem to react to wishes
but since Bowser touched the comet, and has the main royal sticker, they were granting his wish for power
so Gooper Blooper’s wish to dance and Mr Blizzard’s wish for a body that doesn’t melt simply granted them overflowing power, leading to a poisonous flood and a never ending blizzard respectively
and of course, as the Goombas and Pokey are direct followers who had the crown directly given to them, they’d of course wish for his wish
and Petey’s just Petey
I think Kersti is like a priestess of sorts, maybe, as the Royal Stickers are called the "Six Divine Sticker Beings" in the Enigmansion, which is a whole other conundrum, as nowhere else in the game, not even by Kersti herself, are the Royal Stickers refered to as sentient people, they're objects, with a lot of power yes, but ultimately objects.
An artifact that is revered as a god would be an idol, which is fair given how the people of the Mushroom Kingdom make a whole festival for the Sticker Comet and essentially "give it their prayers", they could be seen as idols, but with actual power.
Can you be a priest for an idol? Maybe, Kersti says it's her job so it wouldn't be out of the question that on her "planet", the Sticker Star, she is the equivalent of a priest for these 6 "gods", and one of her obligations is to fly them to Mario's world every year.
I guess other terms such as guardian, caretaker, guide, etc would also fit Kersti, but I like priestess for the implication that the Royal Stickers are thought to be divine, at least in the Mushroom Kingdom.

I did see Mario Maker mentioned in a Reddit thread--the commenter claimed they tried it at least and there were no results. I'd test it myself, but too late (Wii U servers are shut down 😅)

Sticker Star was actually my first introduction into the Paper Mario series. And I actually like the game. I know it sterilized the series going forward and removed a lot of the original characters. On top of completely changing the battle system. But I still have fun playing through it from time to time.

My story behind sticker star is very personal, I got the game from a friend who got it twice on his birthday, I got it free from him and loved playing it, I didn’t play any paper Mario game before. And getting the game again 2 years ago and re-playing it shows me a lot more of its issues, but even then, I like for what it does. Tho I do prefer origami king.

Fans love to RIP on this game because it wasn’t CUTUP to be like the other STACK of games on the table. Obviously comparing it to the other games make it look like SCRAP but it’s not terrible. It has some good things that Nintendo has FOLDED into it. This game needs some more fans TACKED onto it because a lot of people love to use it as a series STAPLE of bad games and CRUMBLE it up in throw in the trash. I Especially love the whole ARTS and CRAFTS/ PAPER aspect it brought and how the series was able to to STICK to it

I like filling out the sticker museum and collecting all the real world things and I get it sticker star is very different from the previous three games and such a trend for the next two that a lot of people don’t like but I think people don’t like it more because it’s different than because it’s bad on its own merit
Honestly, the only good thing that came from Sticker Star was the music.
I started playing super paper mario a while ago but recently i started playing color splash bucuse of you and i love it i also got stickerstar to play after color splash so i dont have an opinion yet but tbh color splash is like my 2nd fav game rn so thanks

I remember playing this game, and feeling a lingering sense of disappointment of its story. It’s no grand adventure, just a collection of smaller adventures stacked together in a trenchcoat trying to convince you it’s a bigger and grand adventure.
The music is good though. Clearly Intelligent Systems has the ability to create a great Paper Mario game that stands alongside the classic first 3 in the series… and that they’re fans of the series, but they just don’t take the opportunity to. It’s just so weird that they could make an absolute amazing remake of TTYD, but not an amazing unique creation.

@@ThaneGaming nope, I simply do not enjoy the game enough to take the time to 100% the game. There's several things that I don't like about the game, but I had to use the guide for most of the game
@@batzzowo8942 I remember some of the Thing puzzles being unintuitive and even cryptic, I had to use a guide and I'm sure most players did too

Isn't the third round a block shuffle game? The first is answering questions, and the second is Whac-A-Mole, so the bonus round combines the first two because you're answering questions while bonking Snifits

I had a theory about the plot of this game. What if the whole reason that Bowser wanted the Sticker Comet because he wanted Princess Peach to love him? In ‘Super Paper Mario’, Count Black successfully weds Bowser and Peach. If the marriage wasn’t truly legitimate, the Chaos Heart would never have been summoned. Yet, throughout the game, Peach constantly ignores Bowser.
Does this mean that the only reason why Sticker Star exists is because Bowser wants his wife back?!
Now that the 3 horrible games are over now we can get onto the good stuff!!!
I don't really like or hate sticker star? It's solidly good, I think the writing is its real charm? But... I think for me the biggest turn off was the idea that, along with Paper Jam, this game marks this idea that PAPER Mario and MARIO Mario are different entities? I haven't played through all of Paper Jam, but a lot of the ideas that the OG 3 Paper Marios (or really just the first 2) add to the Larger Universe are REALLY charming, and I hate to lose them in the universe by having them be written off as "Just Paper Mario Concepts" as opposed to wider Mario World concepts!
I've always really enjoyed Sticker Star, it's a pretty good game, but I've never felt like defending it from the heavy criticism it gets as I have played some more of the rest of the series since, plus I personally also had some gripes with the game that are apparently also common complaints, and the gap of quality is huuuuge, completely eclipses what good aspects Sticker Star has on its own
I do still maintain the opinion that the combat system is decent for the series and that Origami King and especially Color Splash are far worse at it though, the bosses in Origami King get a slight pass for being built around it but the rest of the time it is tedious and tiresome while Color Splash's is just pain

Why don't you like it, in gameplay ?
Mainly because of the plot...I'm okay with a simple one but there wasn't a lot of great dialogue to make up for it, or any stories really happening between chapters. I also really didn't like the blandness of the locales & the lack of unique characters. The puzzles/exploration was OK, but I wasn't a fan of the battles (Color Splash made it more interesting for me, though a I know some would disagree).

@@PrintThem and I respect yours! I didn't talk about the map because I wasn't trying to review the game, I just wanted to bring up some of the bigger points I disliked about it when relevant. I do prefer the more seamless world of the first two + The Origami King though.

the game itself is a dark aspect, as it started the new era of paper mario and has never heard of what stories are
Color Splash didn't have much of a plot, but the symbiote-like Black Paint was a good idea, and The Origami King had a genuinely good story imo. You're right though, the main reason Sticker Star is the one Paper Mario game I truly dislike is because how little narrative there is (they even took away Bowser's voice...)
@ThaneGaming yeah, i agree. like, compared to the og 3 PM games, the newer 3 are more barebones in story, but atleast CS and TOK had more emotion to them, and are by far better than SS. but when Nintendo when making SS was literally like: "what does story mean"
@@themaskedstallion I agree with you on that last part, it's sad that the element I liked most about Paper Mario (cool stories set in the Mario universe) was largely abandoned in Sticker Star because of that infamous Club Nintendo survey for Super Paper Mario, where "not even 1% said the story was interesting." SS came together because of that revelation, which caused the development team to want to avoid a story altogether. Iwata even said "That's a difficult task. In some ways that would be the exact opposite direction" of the first three games, but they went all in on the idea and the game suffered for it. That being said, I'm glad they've been embracing plot more in modern Paper Mario, and hopefully the next game will be a return to form in that regard. The TTYD remake is a good sign, of course!

It'd really help if these characters were actually given speaking lines that aren't just battle cries. Petey says "Shwiiiiii... SHINEY PETEY TIME!" and burps. That's it...
I'm okay with the ocassional boss monster that attacks without dialogue, but when it's every single one I stop getting excited to battle them.
I suppose Petea Piranha made up for that for being both a humorous boss and also a boss that is reasonably challenging and also not forced to use Things.
@@iantaakalla8180 yes! Agreed! Petea was a fun surprise, and he did have a few lines before the encounter (I like that he spoke his own language, w/ the meaning in parenthesis but gave up because he realized Mario can't understand him). That was the way to do it

It may have been nice for you, but there was no Paper Mario fanbase after this, and pretty much annihilation of one or the other will be the only end to this.
As a neat side effect, the Mario & Luigi series was ruined by this as well.

Actually, it’s a pretty hot take considering anyone who seriously covers it agrees Sticker Star is a bad game in general. Every single aspect is boring or antagonizing. Every single mote of fun scraped from this game is done in spite or ignorance.

Come on sticker star is in a bad game. It’s a decent game. It’s really good. They hate for it is not true. It’s either by people who never played the game or by people who just wanna make their words spoken out to the public
I wasn't even claiming it's a bad game in the video, I just don't personally like it. And I'm not saying it because that's a popular opinion--my dissapointment for it was and still is real. I enjoyed all of world 4 and there are some other things I like about Sticker Star, but overall I have a negative opinion about the game. I don't think anyone who does enjoy it is wrong, though
