Correction: (2:33) - commenter "Skypatroller_BenCD" informed me that fire is not the *only* way to defeat a Shunned Guy. They can also be defeated with Ice Flowers or Thing cards!

I love how freaking strange is the paper mario lore.
First game: Mario has to destroy Bowser's plans!
Second game: Mario needs to find a millinery hidden treasure which is tried to be obtained by a group divided by classes which kidnapped princes Peach, who is trying to help Mario with the help of a computer which is trying to learn what love means!
Third game: Mario has to save the universe because of a obscure future-knowing book which is being handled by a dark guy who was the lover of Mario's butterfly partner in the past with the help of Peach, Luigi and Bowser while solving problems related to slavery, mental control and other dark activities!
Fourth game: Stickerzzz!!!111!1
Fifth game: Mario has to solve a massacre problem made by a Venom-like entity which is controlling Bowser, who only wanted to make true a childish fantasy of having a cute rainbow shell!

Ok but i love how Bowser, in his confusion on why Mario's there, asks if they have a kart race scheduled for that day, showing that they arent just hero and villain, but enjoy other hobbies too

I like to think Huey dumped the black paint into outer space itself, which is already black, in order to neutralize it. This game's artstyle shows the sky as a flat backdrop, so it makes sense that you can paint it too. And yeah, I agree that having a few possessed enemies through the game would've been really fun

When you go back to the train to trigger the cutscene again, every other character is there, except for the Red Shy Guy. Fly high, RSG, you will be missed.

I think the creepiest/weirdest moment is the black paint bowser’s final attack.
Imagine just chilling, being possessed, and the creature possessing you decides to take itself, and all of YOUR life essence to kill some guy with a moustache that you don’t like.

The black paint factory blowing up is nightmare fuel no cap. These guys are just working their job and Mario blows up the deadly super acid tank and now the room is rapidly filling up with flesh melting liquid. Those minions had families. Wives, Husbands, kids, siblings. How many families did you just ruin?

15:00 I’ve interpreted it that all of the black paint coloured the night sky in that instant. It doesn’t make a lot of sense if you think about it for like… ten seconds, but that was my immediate thought, and I can’t change it.
My headcanon is that there's "okay" black paint, and "not okay" Black Paint. The "okay" black paint is any instance where the color black is utilized, whether it's an outline, a character's pupils, a Fuzzy, etc. The "not okay" Black Paint is whenever the sacriligeous slurry fromed from mixing the Big Paint Stars's paint together is propagated.
Huey sending the Black Paint towards the black-painted night sky is his way of safely disposing of it, since the infinite vastness of black paint outweighs the Bowser's Castle's worth of Black Paint. If the Black Paint is synonymous to a symbiote, it would be like defeating it by stretching its waning consciousness across the universe, making it so that it's completely ineffectual and rendered inert (like that Adventure Time episode where Jake tries to solve a labyrinth by literally stretching himself thin).

I do have to wonder if they were referencing matpat with the line. Not sure on the time line but it seems possible.
My theory about where Huey took the black paint is that he used it to paint space. We know our universe is still expanding, so that means he’s still out there, using the black paint to color the night sky.
I thought it was him painting the sky a little more black as night arrises
I like the comical horror elements in both Color Splash and Origami King. I haven't beaten Color Splash yet just because I've been busy, but the amount of humor in that game, and Origami King is just cute fun!
And even without too many unique characters, I think they did add real humanity to the ordinary Mario NPCs and Enemies that can make you laugh...and even cry. (Rest in Peace Shy Guy I met on the train.) :(
And for the few unique characters, like Huey, and later Bobby and Olivia in Origami King...it still has that beautiful children's media kind of sacrifice at the end of the story.

The manual for color splash is actually so good. My favourite part is when they talk about the meat boss, they mention how they actually went out and bought actual meat using company money and had a cook-out, even showing and comparing the meat they cooked to the one in game. I love it

i genuinely wish colour splash was more loved in the fandom
sure it's not the gameplay return to form with a deep and interesting story people wanted after sticker star
but the game still oozes so much charm i still hold it towards the upper edges of my favourite games even all these years later

It's such a shame too, there is so many great concepts piled into terrible ones. If they honestly had stopped the card based battles and requiring a specific item to kill a boss it wouldn't be a easily be considered another classic in the series. SS was terrible but at least you could beat bosses without things. Kinda wish the map wasn't locked too so you could go after any big paint star but it was still cool there was a legitimate story reason why you couldn't get in some places till you got em. Definitely underrated thanks to SS though and honestly a better game than Origami king.
I don’t mind this game having a Basic story because it’s not trying to have a grand story. It’s just trying to be a funny Mario adventure and I’m fine with that. My only problem with the story is that it’s heavily implied and then revealed that Bowser was possessed by the black paint the entire game, but they never do anything with that and then at the end of the game everyone acts like he was the bad guy the whole time even though he was doing everything against his will. It’s just so weird. I also don’t buy that Kamek didn’t know bowser was possessed. He’s smarter than that. The game also could have made the black paints plan be a lot more interesting just by using what’s already in the game. In the game black paint is extremely toxic and can kill you and it can also possess you. The paint possessing Bowser wanted to cover the entire world in black paint, so why not reveal that the reason he wants to do that is because he would kill everybody on the Earth, and then the black paint would possess their dead bodies creating a new world of paint folk that he would be the ruler of. All of the pieces are there it’s just that the game doesn’t use any of them
Well said! I agree that all of the pieces are there, so it's a great idea, but it isn't executed as well as it could have been. I did find it weird that Peach says something along the lines of "I hope Bowser's learned his lesson this time" during the ending...dude accidentally caused trouble because he wanted a cool shell. The fact that Mario says nothing (off-screen of course, I know he doesn't normally have lines) makes me think that he's unaware his archnemesis was possessed at all, despite Bowser's dialogue and attitude making it very obvious he didn't know what was going on. I like your point about Kamek, you're spot-on about that. I get that they wanted to save the reveal of the Black Paint puppeting Bowser for the final memory, but Kamek could have at least alluded to it (like Peach early on saying that Bowser's not himself). I like the idea of Black Paint being this primordial evil that simply wants to spread itself across Earth (and yours about it wanting to revive color-drained folk with black paint so that it can rule over them), but sadly any motives for it are headcanon because the game doesn't offer any :/

@@ajenethedrawer3718 I have a strange idea, but what if, probably on the next console after the Switch, they do a paper mario collection similar to all stars, but with all the paper mario games possibly excluding origami king. Definitely a stretch of an idea, but it’d be fun.
@ThaneGaming Even when I was a big Modern Paper Fan (Nowadays, I want nothing to really do with the Nintendo Switch anymore) this was a big criticism I was thinking in the back of my head and I believe I made (Or was thinking about making but I just didn't for whatever reason) a Paper Mario Color Splash post about it.

I've played through Color Splash twice, 100%. I really like it, but not Sticker Star. I know the battle system isn't much of an improvment (and is even admittedly a bit slower), but I enjoyed the paint managment aspect and Hammer Scraps "leveling up" your total paint capacity.
Everything else about CS is brimming with charm & personality (which I felt was lacking with SS). The main plot is simple, but the idea of parasitic Black Paint posessing Bowser is really cool. I think Color Splash & TOK proved to me that Intelligent Systems did the best they could with their odd creative limitations. I love these games
The sad part about sticker star is that it has some potential. The sticker management is a good idea imo, sure you can carry around a bunch of overpowered thing cards but you have limited inventory space. The game also has some nice moments. Mostly in the later half though. The shy guy/snifit game show trend started here. The mansion level where you need to find a bunch of boos as well as the ski lift level are cool as well. Also seeing the festival square being rebuilt as you progress through the game is very nice. However, because all the characters are toads you don’t really remember any of them. TLDR: The game, while flawed, had potential.
@@Wilmadiamond The levels that you mentioned are my favorite parts about the game. The Snifit gameshow & Enigmansion are genuinly fun, and I remember having a better time with the ice levels in general. I think Mizzter Blizzard was a good idea for a boss, with a bit more of a story than "found a Royal Sticker, put sticker on and went mad". It is funny how that's all post chapter 3, the longest one by far!
I do agree that sticker management itself is a good idea, it's just tough to base an entire battle system around that concept. I think the ring system in The Origami King is really clever and the bosses are pretty great, but it had a similar problem where the late game starts feeling tedious. The little bit of incentive Color Splash provided w/ its Hammer Scraps helped, so if Sticker Star had something like it and more interesting earlier chapters I would've enjoyed it so much more. You're right, it did have potential.

Sticker star bar is so low that anything that does a slight opposite of it is better by default.
It’s great knowing that a funny game that I played when I was younger actually had that much more thought put into it. Honestly great video and now I’m willing to play the other paper Mario games, I’m that is if I can reasonably pay for them.

It's really nice to see some Color Splash love in the comments. I understand how the modern PM games have issues like the battle systems, but I've gotten REALLY tired over the past several years of any and all praise towards the modern games always being undercut by someone bringing up those issues.
It's perfectly valid to dislike the modern games for those reasons, don't get me wrong. But there's still a lot to like about them and I wish more people would be able to see past the "old games good, modern games bad" filter.
I don't like to be _that_ kinda guy, but honestly I think that most people that do this likely haven't even played the game and just like to jump on a hatewagon for the sake of it, because you'd think they'd have at least some knowledge about the game beyond "this game is bad because the internet told me it was 8 years ago". Francis's words still hold true to this day.
This is why Color Splash is an underrated gem.

This game is actually one of my favorite games of all time
About where all of the black paint from Huey disappeared. As I was young, when played PMCS, I had the same question, but later, I revisited the game and got the theory: the sky. The night sky, as we can partially see at the Starlight’s Cape and above the Bowser castle, is dark-blue, with a bit of a purple, but most of all - it is paper too, like everything in this world. Slurp Guys are known for sucking the paint from not only just toads and nature, but from even a freaking ocean and sky itself, as we see, when we first time arrive to the bridge of the Scarlet Tower. The Big Paint stars have enough power fix it, so, as Huey is connected to the Paint Fountain, he has a bit of such power too. Connecting everything, I say that Huey simply painted the sky to a darker tone ( plus the sound and sparks going after the Huey’s ascension indicates, that something was PAINTED COMPLETELY ), making nights in this world… well, nights-nights.
That’s my crazy theory, but it looks kinda persuasive, so, this is how I think this happens.

color splash has always been one of my favourites, even if it isn’t really considered ‘good’ by a lot of people, i love the whole concept of paint being used.

Man when I was younger I remember being bummed that I couldnt play this game cuz i didnt have a WiiU. For years I only ever heard crap things about this one tho mostly due to the battle system, however tbh I would love to get a chance to play this game someday if they ever decided to somehow port it to the switch. I love how dark this game technically is especially compared to Origami King. Thank you so much for making this video! I got to see and enjoy for the first time said dark aspects of it because of this!

I personally love Color Splash, and despite all its flaws (I’m looking at your Sniffit or Whiffit) it has a special place in my heart. Especially just how unapologetically morbid it is.
Paper Mario Color Splash fans deserve a Re-release on switch 2 (me being one of those diehard fans even though I’ve never played the game, I love the aesthetic and story so much)

Color Splash reminds me of the Pokemon anime, in which there are many comparisons between the XY(Z) anime and Sun and Moon anime. It's like TTYD vs. CS. While the former is more epic and adventurous, the latter is laid back and has funny gags and dialogue. Both also having different artstyles. Also like CS, Sun and Moon weren't shy of touching various darker topics like possession and death.
Say what you will about the battle system in the recent Paper Mario games. But the writing in Color Splash and Origami King is both funny and occasionally deep at the same time. I like when you’re given the chance to talk and interact with Bowser’s minions in both games since you’re able to get a glimpse of how they see things from their perspective. Whether that be what it’s like working under Bowser or learning about their own aspirations. Showing that the minions are more than just two dimensional characters. (Despite all the characters literally being two dimensional in the Paper Mario series.)
Color Splash and Origami King may have far more restrictions put on them compared to their older counterparts, but they still have tons of charm and world building in my opinion. And it’s a shame they aren’t looked upon as fondly as their older counterparts. Though I suppose it’s to be expected with how much Nintendo had sterilized the franchise. At least with Origami King, it seems that might be changing since we got to see more visually interesting places and some characters did have unique designs and personalities. Maybe with the TTYD remake, it will do well and we can see Nintendo start to lift more of the restrictions on the series with future releases.
The biggest pro Id give Color Splash and have been giving it since its release is that opening cutscene and the whole premise. The whole draining characters of their paint, leaving them basically lifeless immediately hooked me when I first got the game and, while the rest of the game isn’t that good, it doesn’t change the fact that this is a killer premise
It’s things like this that makes me believe that at least some of the people working in modern paper Mario actually care, at least a bit about the world the games take place in. Even though there are still many many issues and problems with color splash and the other modern paper Mario games, I feel that after sticker star they at least TRIED to make a interesting world while still sticking to “only use established characters” rule. The dialogue in both color splash and origami king is done with as much care as the dumb restrictions allow for. It’s sad that we can’t see the alternative timeline where color splash (sticker star and origami king as well) would have been created in a similar way as the first two games. You can still keep the paint mechanic. And if you did it right a card/deck builder would actually work pretty well and it could be simple yet complex enough for both casual and hardcore players. Even sticker star could have at least been labeled decent if it’s story and characters were less two dimensional. At least TTYD is getting a remake so if that sells well we might get at least some of the old paper Mario in the next new game. Even if it’s just some interesting characters or party members that would be enough for me to be satisfied.

I would agree with that. The Origami King has some moments that come close, but I think Color Splash inches past because of the sheer amount of genuinely funny dialogue. You can bet Color Splash will be at the forefront in threads about examples of suprising writing in Mario games
It’s either Color Splash or Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Personally, I think Kingdom Battle has some lines that are just a little wittier. Speaking of which, Thane, do you think you’ll ever do a Dark Aspects on the Mario+Rabbids games? Because I bet you could find a few gems in those games.

@@MatthewWeinberg-lr6kv probably! The games have always interested me but I've admittedly only played the first world of the original, despite having owned it for a few years now. I just put it down for whatever reason and haven't gone back yet...I really need to cover the Mario & Luigi series too, I've played a couple of them but the ones I haven't are big gaps in my Mario RPG knowledge!
@@bunsmasterbunny I can see a case for maybe TTYD being funnier, but I can't for the original Paper Mario (which is my personal favorite overall). The N64 original has lots of humorous moments for sure, but really funny NPC dialogue isn't as prevalent as it is in Color Splash. Anyway, what do you think of TTYD remake being closer to the Japanese script? I love the examples I've seen so far.

Adding to the factor that losing your paint meant the end of your very paper life, and the only way to save everyone would be to use the power of the Big/Grand Paint Stars to just restore everyone who has ever been drained of their color.
I will allways love this game . Moments like these are what make this game one of the most memorable mario games ever in my opinion .

This kinda make me question if the black paint in Bowser's Fury is actually the same paint from Color Splash who want to takes revenge after Mario ruined his plan. I know that this one was summoned by Bowser's Jr. brush and the one one in Color Splash was summoned from the Prism Fountain which can bring explanations that they could be different because of that but tbh I like to think they are both the same black paint and it has the capacity to be summoned by any tools. Also geat analysis btw!
Being these are two different worlds, I have my doubts they are the same. They are likely counterparts though, due to similar M.Os and powers. Fury Goop is what it says on the tin, toxic goop that can influence someone’s fury, while also turning them giant. It likely has something to do with the fact this is the magic paintbrush that could make literal creatures and Powerups.
Black Paint is different. It’s actually sentient, with actual planning capacity, and can be crafted with paint from anywhere.
Thinking about it, Fury Goop and Black Paint are equally as dangerous. Fury Goop has more inherent power, but is the result of magic paint. Black Paint is easier to make, all you need is the primary colors and a mixer, but at its maximum, it’s less powerful.

@@francisslider64While the two black paints may not be the same entity lore-wise, I do think unused elements form colour splash were considered in the making of bowsers fury. One of the paint-bowser concept arts shown in this video even has the same colour scheme as fury bowser!
@@aidanhammans9337 Two different worlds doesn't make a difference because Paper Jam also established that the events in both worlds are mostly the same, Paper Bowser with Paper Kamek even unknowingly having the same conversation that 3D Bowser had with 3D Kamek at the same time when they separated briefly.
Also, if Paper Mario didn't happen for the 3D Mario, then how did Goomboss return in Super Mario 64 DS? The explanation for his existence at all was in Paper Mario.
Other than that, I do see your point since the Magic Paint Brush has been shown to be able to bring drawings to life.

I think its basically assumed that the dark paint was used to become the night sky, as huey explodes as the sky turn the sky black to nighttime.

However, the darkest aspect of Paper Mario: Color Splash has to do with the fact that throughout the game, there isn't a single snowy area within Prism Island. Paper Mario games (and Mario games in general) are know to have vibrant worlds that somehow have a vast range of environments. So the decision for Nintendo to not have any snowy areas in Paper Mario: Color Splash baffled me, until I started thinking deeper. Maybe, Nintendo was warning about something. That Prism Island had already started to be ravaged by climate change, and all the ice and snow in the island had already melted away. It's a warning from Nintendo about an issue that we shall deny no longer, and if humanity continues on this path of polluting the planet we live in, we will all be doomed. And not only that, in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, we see a tree in Twilight Town with crows perched onto it, discussing about how fossil fuels are being depleted, and people's environmental issues can't just go away, cementing the fact that climate change is canonical within the universe of Paper Mario.
That means the black paint is fossil fuels

I am working on a Sticker Star video now! While I'm not a fan of SS overall, I do think there's enough to talk about & some things I did enjoy about it in hindsight. Color Splash greatly improved upon it with the aspects you mentioned imo, so I retroactively wish the same!
Honestly, I hope Nintendo makes a color splash remake or port. I played and have yet to finish, but my wii U gameplay joystick is broken.

In my headcanon he justs brings it to space, the black paint he brings there slowly transform into black holes, so if you ever see those in a mario game, they are probable made out of black ink

I lost my copy of this game and wanted to revisit it. i still think why this game is supposed too close to a horror game sometimes. I hope huey comes back eventually.
16:28 honestly (and I'm probably kidding) i would have loved to a white paint be involved in some way and that white paint could be the opposite of black paint because in color theory if you mix all color (mainly the main 3: Blue, Yellow and Red) you get black and white paint is not a fusion of color. And heck they could also introduce grey paint which is a fusion of black and white so as a light and darkness situation
