"It took the country that cares the least about football to take down the people who'd been ruining it". Actually, that hits the nail on the head. Most nations were complicit in FIFA's corruption (if not outright supportive of it), because they didn't want to wreck their chances at hosting world cup games. The US, as a culture, just doesn't care about the sport the same way, and that detachment allowed them to bring down some of the organization's worst offenders. Other nations probably wouldn't want to risk the potential fallout.

most contries ? lol do you really think the people living in the contries have a say ? its only a select few being the reason .... most people would gladly have seen him gone back then mate. Usa only did it because they hade no lose and everything to win. Even if everyone would have hated Usa for doing it, it wouldn hurt em since its not a widely spread sport ... but since they are now playing Football (soccer) emself now and then it would benifit emself getting rid of the dirt in Fifa. Usa as a contry (because most people living there has no say) does only whats good for Usa .. we need oil..lets invade someone and claim we are helping. etc etc etc :P

That makes a lot of sense. In the movie Spotlight, the reason why a lot of the reporters were able to expose the corruption of the Catholic church was because many of them were non-Catholic and thus detached from the reverence many people held for the Vatican at the time.

US bringing Fifa corruption into daylight makes perfect sense, because the US isn't big in the big soccer business and therefore not making billions out of Fifa corruptions. I wonder if they'd been on this moral high ground if soccer was as big of a business in the US as elsewhere.

Hopefully The US doesn't do that, but from the looks of how things are going, I expect OSHA and many safety agencies to be destroyed and employees will have no more health or safety in jobs, basically going back to the unregulated industrial revolution, the worst time in history that ruined everything.

The morning after the raid I'm in the kitchen with the radio on, listening to NPR...they've got a correspondent in Switzerland and they ask him "Did the arrests come as a surprise to _anyone_?" and the correspondent thought for a moment and said wryly "Well...to the seven officials." They got rid of Seb Blatter back in 2015, not that long after this episode got aired. Turns out he wasn't the only problem after all. In the meantime, the US has been gifted the next WC while it has been well hidden how companies from all over the west where the ones factually benefitting from the slave labour. John Oliver himself in fact waited with reporting anything since untill those building projects got finished, western companies got paid and solely the Qatari governemt could get blamed for hosting this festival of western cultur... Alcohol has been approved last minute as well, since Fifa tournaments overrule local law. Which only further confirms how the WC is a festival of 'our' western values like alcoholism and indeed still slavery.

But his substance and scope of investigating real and often overlooked issues are wonderfully refreshing. There's tremendous value in the main issues he discusses, more than I've seen on most networks and shows. The satire, comedy and criticism that Stewart and Colbert brought are (were) important, and well done. But the scope pales in comparison. Oliver is taking full advantage of his network, and with masterful execution.

Donald Trump announced his presidential campaign just two weeks later, on June 16, 2015. He became president a year and a half after that. Bud light is the insult to beer.
Brits are pretty specific about their beer's taste.
People who drink Bud light on the other hand, are setting the bar very low.
I now live in South-East Asia, and even in all these not-so-rich countries, they make a better mass-produced beer than the US. Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia,... all of them.
If you like bad beer, at least you could try new bad beers sometimes, I suggest you start with French Kronenbourg
Or to be a real bad beer expert, you need to find the "33 Export", tastes the same when you drink it and when you vomit it.
Or you could order real good beer from one of the thousands of micro breweries in the US... To each his own.

mo shpit I can't wait to see why Blatter stepped down after being so smug and defiant after he won re-election on Friday. Did the ones indicted turn on him to get lesser deals? Some sort of corruption had to get linked to him in the past 48hrs for him to resign so abruptly. There had been no news about sponsors dropping FIFA, and for that strategy to work, it would take months/years of loss of money for Blatter to step down.

I remember watching this video yesterday thinking Sepp wouldn't be out of ruling fifa unless he got arrested many years down the road (hence why Oliver made such ridiculous promises, not one person in the world believed he would actually quit). And just one day later we find out he will be gone soon. This is a day of celebrating for us football fans. We still have a lot of work and a long way to go to rid fifa of corruption (it runs so deep) but it gives us hope that it can get better. That is a wonderful feeling.
And even if you didn't influence Blatter to quit, I better see some Bud Light Lime champagne drinking! And everything else for that matter.

    Great episode for two reasons:
    1) You got the attention of the American people, which are the only ones who can stop Blatter. Because no matter how hard you try, and believe me, we have tried, the UK/Germany/Spain and the Netherlands can't arrest Blatter for giving a Tanzanian official 10000 dollars in Egypt. However since those transactions are made with US currency, American justice can act on it, as they have done, but not yet enough.
    2) Finally someone agreed upon the awesomeness of us, Dutch people. I promise you, American people, that if you can get rid of Blatter, I will personally make sure that we get rid of Donald Trump

Why do I feel like the USA only did something against Blatter and the FIFA, because they either didn't get enough money from them or they were insulted by them in some other way? I really don't think that FIFA, a worldwide corrupt group, wouldn't offer the US a lot of money. And I really don't think that the US would turn that down.

It's because we suspected that the 2018 and 2022 WC's were bribed. Especially 2022. Qatar is an economic powerhouse. It would be no surprise if they bribed FIFA. And as a result, a qatari representative, Mohammed bin Hammam, was fired since he was a part of the bribery scandal. So i dont think we'd do this because of what your theory is.

    • @tifforo1
      @tifforo1 Před 4 lety +2

The U.S. is the world's largest economy. Offering money to the U.S. national treasury, which is in debt trillions of dollars and still able to borrow at a reasonable interest rate, would be a drop in the bucket. As for offering money to specific individuals in the U.S... I don't believe that most people in the FBI can be directly bribed. In terms of direct bribery, the U.S. isn't super corrupt in most cases. Most corruption in the U.S. either takes more subtle forms - like influencing someone's job security or implying that they might be able to work with you after they leave government - or else occurs due to the fact that way too many forms of corruption (campaign donations, super PACs, gerrymandering) are actually legal in the U.S. But in terms of susceptibility to illegal bribes, I don't think the FBI is that corrupt.
