According to the back of the box, the D and T buttons are for remapping the Dial and Trigger buttons.
You can remap either button to the face buttons, L1/R1/L2/R2, start/select, or a directional key.

The asci grip is feature complete and ambidextrous as well with doubles for most of the right hand face buttons.

had the ascii one back in the day and played through many an rpg with it. i which they had one for new consoles it was really great cause after 5 hours or so my hands start to ache with a traditional controller and with the ascii one you could just switch hands

I've got the Ascii Grip stashed away somewhere. Bought it primarily to play FF7 back in the day. The Switch joycons are perfect for "lazy play" - small and wireless so you can play in whatever position you want. Currently playing Octopath with split joycons. BTW Solid choice of PSX games.

I own an Ascii Grip (Got it when FFVII was first released...I'm old). What sets it apart from the Hori controller you used is that the X and O buttons are on the "trigger" locations. This would make your experience with games like Castlevania far easier, along with racers. It was surprisingly well thought out in the layout of the buttons. Honestly, I don't know if you guys have done a video on it yet, but you should get one and try it out as a follow up to this video.

Hmm, as a more general controller it'd probably work better if the directions were at the bottom and the action buttons were at the top, so the "heel" of your thumb controls the motions while you press buttons with the end... or the directions could be underneath and the actions on top? Hmm...

You're comment at 2:34 about the d-pad; is that a reference to it being called a D-pad because you can draw a "D" shape around it? I've never understood that logic. Was that some marketing thing from way back in the day, or just a memetic thing that people started calling it? Cuz to me it makes perfect sense: it's a pad of buttons for 4 directions, being Up, Down, Left, and Right. The Directional Pad. D-pad. I get the idea of a D shape fitting around it, but I'm dubious that that's where the name came from in the first place. It would've made more sense for game companies to call it a Square Pad or something like that, cuz a square fits much more symmetrically around it than a D does. I've always guessed that's just based off people hearing others call it a "D-pad" and misunderstanding what the "D" stood for. Like when people assume that AR15 stand for "Assault Rifle 15" because, ah, sure, that's probably right! Then again I don't wanna make assumptions, so correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe some game company did advertise it as the D-Pad based on its shape, and people started calling it direction-pad later on... but I doubt that...
I had an ASCII Grip to play FFVII and VIII back in the 90's. It was pointless but cool to look at.
I'm pretty sure that if you mapped the rear trigger to a ready weapon button, and you practiced a little, you could play through the Resident Evil trilogy and Silent Hill 1 without having to resort to a claw grip.
Edit: Well maybe using the run button might be difficult, since you'll have to hold down Square while simultaneously using the D-Pad.
