- Took a while but I finally finished the prototype for a PS4 Single Handed Controller based off the Hori PS4 Mini Pad.
In this second episode I do a bunch of 3D design using Fusion 360, print the parts, wire everything together then test using Red Dead Redemption 2.
Enjoy! - Hry
There is a SpeedRunner known as "Half Coordinated", who cause of disability does speed runs one-handed, I do wonder what would happen if he got one of bens controllers
MrBlakBunny that's a great idea..
great fucking idea
He'd probably wipe the floor with us able-bodied people.
would be huge exposure for Ben as well, "Half Coordinated" performed in front of tens of thousands on twitch at AGDQ/SGDQ and the youtube vids have been watched by a ton of people, tons of nerds like us who would love to watch Bens stuff
I'm not as deep in the speed running community as I'd like to be so Half Coordinated sounds wicked to look at. Main question I had tho is would he even be able to use it as it's an incredibly modified controller? Even though it's to make it easier, would the free running community accept his runs if he used one?
Couldn't ask for a better CZcams experience. Great engineering skills, good sense of humor, comfortable in front of camera and interesting content. Thanks
I think you're absolutely correct! I've been pleased with every video.
Yep. I i skipped right to the end of the video to see the result
Content was great! Humor however... thats um...
You can literally help everyone with that design. God bless you sir.
The one handed controllers are your best creation to date Ben. Love how this is applicable for those handicapped to one arm. Hope to see these guys in mass production one day.
The console manufacturers really ought to have adaptability in mind and have some mass-marketed controllers to fill this need. Microsoft has the right idea with their adaptability box controller. Love your stuff, Ben.
mmh. A good start, even though it doesn't cover everyone, would be for manufacturers to offer single-handed controllers as a standard option.
Single-handed controllers are awesome in general, even in cases where one controller by itself doesn't offer the full set of functionality (though this is still not great for accessibility, for obvious reasons, it's a start.)
Nintendo has done this twice now, not with accessibility in mind, but you still see that this approach has helped the community anyway. (The Wii of course, and now the switch. In both cases the standard control scheme has amounted to a matched pair of one-handed controllers. Because the functionality is split this isn't ideal, but it does introduce some useful level of flexibility.)
So... Just make single-handed controllers as a standard option, if you do nothing else. Really, you SHOULD be doing quite a bit more than that, but it's still a step up from the standard game controller, as a base.
(I mean, holding two unmodified joycons in a single hand is almost doable. Probably with practice, and perhaps the aid of a very simple 3d printed rig, that would work wonders in and of itself, which shows how beneficial this can be...)
Hear that, console manufacturers? MORE ONE-HANDED CONTROLLERS!
XD
Microsoft created nothing new. The Playstation had a one handed controller in the 90s.
There's plenty of options for disabled gamers.
@@BigDaddyWes How many of them rely on people like Ben doing these kinds of time consuming hand-made mods though?
Actual well thought out standard solutions are much less common.

Quite possibly the best use of 3d printing I can imagine. Purpose built prototyping to product for a niche market that would never be profitable for a big company and helps an under served community at need. As a video explainer, one of the best I've seen you do Mr. Heckendorn. I love the insight into the problem solving and different techniques to prototype and design. Inspiring and informative. Thanks.
This video is presented very well and shows the Engineering Design Process in action splendidly. First the clay prototype then 3D printed one, just amazing

you should put a gyroscope in it and use hand movements instead of the analog stick against your leg
Smart it feels like pressing something tiny like the joystick against your leg will eventually hurt after a while
Or maybe stick it to a base like a flight stick
Good idea or he could also make a stand that snaps onto (like scuff controller extensions) and the stand stays still so your left with something like an old atari controller.
It would need some tactile feedback for gyro input though like an actuator to click when it's central and all the way. also you would need an L3 button on the controller
I would have just (I think it would need to be de-inverted) put the left stick into a solid, flat base, sort of like the old PC "flight sticks." That still enables one-handed use without relying on getting your hand into the exact right position to center it.
Either that or use the gyro for the right stick. Thanks to having grown up on Nintendo consoles (Wii, 3DS, and Switch), I am well accustomed to the use of a gyro-aim feature. This would also be much more intuitive and natural, as tilting devices (cameras, guns, etc) is how we aim them in the real world. Movement, on the other hand, is much less associated with tilting and better suited to joystick control, and this familiar standard reaches all the way back to some of the earliest arcade games.
This is Revolutionary! You should patent this and market it. I've always wondered and worried that if I ever lost a hand I would never be able to game again. And I never thought I could with a single hand. But you have proven that it can be done, and better yet, created a controller that works and can function the same! I think that's just amazing! Thanks to this, people who have tragically lost a hand, or could otherwise never use a controller with two hands can game on a console. This is a invention that I'm sure can change lives and restore the ability to game many people in the world. You are a hero! Thanks so much for making this. My only regret is not being filthy rich, so i could fund you for making these and distributing them to those who need them.
Please make this known to everyone with one hand this is amazing I can't believe you've done this well done you you should make these yourself you will change lives
25:50 you truly have experience! Holy moly I was impressed! “One screw doesn’t seem like enough” and designed a hole to make it easy to tighten the screws. You’re a genius!
Thanks for this video Ben. It’s so inspiring to watch your process, the way you approach prototyping and how the final form comes together piece by piece. I’ve followed your builds since ..... (oh crap are we really getting that old?) years ago, and this feels fun and intimate like the early builds. Love this channel!
Absolutely amazing. Knew a guy one time that had his left arm shot and he lost ut. Yet he still played his ps4, mostly fighting games. And surprisingly he was really good.
I hope he finds this
Tuberculosis with my friends lmaooo
Well I tried to read all comments but so many were about making like typical joystick. This is for 1 hand so you can hit as many buttons as possible with your 4 fingers and thumb. This is the best I've seen next to the access one he designed. I will be using my CC to order this asap as a 35th bday gift and to finally have a controller to replace my damage access that I always try to make work better. The fact he does this for us is beyond grateful. So I think the comments of telling him I do this or that or I would've done this or that. Unwarranted. He has been working with disable gamers for over a decade and next to the access this has so much in genius thought into it. Granted I'm going to use software to make the right stick be my left stick since my main game doesn't really need 2 sticks. I cant wait to order this
What games do you play?

How can people possibly dislike this video? Like this guy took all this time out of his life to make a controller concept for people that are limited on mobility. This is awesome and Sony should license this and pay this man big bucks. He is making videos available for everyone and I love it.
Duuuuuude, could you imagine this working in conjunction with a left handed controller with the same amount of input? That could take gaming to a whole new level! Would love to see a game made with this kind of controller in mind. Good job Ben, one armed people everywhere will sing of your achievement.
Can you imagine what you have to design to compensate to give a one-handed person the same abilities than. Than you can give that input to a 2 handed person and do it again and again and again...
@Robin Dijkshoorn I was not expecting anyone to reply to this after 4 years. Heck, I didn't even remember this until you replied.
Is it possible that I can get a controller for a left handed player
This is incredible that a single person is doing what an entire department does. Keep up the good work!
Im always beyond impressed, with Ben’s, product design.
You are amazing. You can bring so many people in to the gaming world. I hope you can patent this somehow and produce more units for people, great job man.
Been missing your vids. Not sure what happened with element 14 but I am glad you're still making videos. Informative and entertaining as always. Good on you for not caring. You do you Ben. Nothing wrong with getting back to your masterful CZcams roots.
he got tired of it. he was doing those shows for years. what he really likes doing is stuff like this. too much of the other show was making stuff that'd get views. now he just does the videos to chronicle what he's doing.
Appreciate the sound fix. :D It's surprisingly hard to design a grip despite all of us being human, on Forged in Fire many blacksmiths make bad handle grips. :\ Oof, that D-pad is a bit severe imo, you can feel a Plus shape as easily as any shape. Plus it's often not said but a D-pad cap is used in a single rolling manner rather than being aware of the 4 separate digital switches underneath. I know it's role has changed with time to the point of Nintendo just doing individual 4 buttons in a cross formation but there has been too many "Not-A-D-pad" caps that last 20 years.
Pretty sweet design, very slick, looks like a true Sony product. :)

Awesome build Ben. I am just left wondering, doesn't that engraving plastic have metal foil inside? Could that be a potential short, or if the shiny bit is a metal/plastic mix, at least a resistive load if it contacts the button leads?

I WAS thinking about the left hand version. I was wondering though, will the pcb translate to that side? Won't you need to feed the wires behind it? Or were they through hole?
He mentioned it in the video, he'll just solder to the button pads
He just has to turn it 180° i think. So it will be mirrored. For example a cable which gone to the bottom of the Controller will be then at the top.

Yr Our modern day Einstein ...
The "leg"stick should have the option be attachable on to something more stable, say, on a table. But what's in my mind might be far too complicated. Plus you probably wouldn't be able to use motion control. Also, the L1 L2 might be a little too small, which would make it difficult to press all 4 shoulder buttons with only 2 fingers at the same time(I know that not a lot of games needs that, but it's nice to have the "capability"). Maybe having L1 and L2 buttons in the "away from your hand" direction, and having R1 and R2 "towards the controller" direction. And then have the buttons be circular in pattern, which would make it more comfortable to press L2 and R2 buttons at the same time with one finger.

Just an idea, but wouldn't motion controls be better for the camera control "stick" and then have the one on top control the character?
Aiming has to be a lot more precise than moving (think fps games), so probably not.
Moving camera (aiming) needs much finer motion and control
@@prodbyfaith I've played shooters with a Razer Hydra a lot; motion controls can work pretty well for aiming if you got absolute rotation and the right software. But I don't think it would work with just the gyro and accelerometer of the PS4 controllers though, and even if it did, it would involve a lot of extra hardware to account for the inability to run extra software on the a console to properly interpret and translate the data into game inputs (since most games do not already handle it properly.
@@prodbyfaith Though, without absolute rotation you could still use motion controls in place of the motion stick, since you just need two axis, and you can get 2 axes of absolute rotation with an accelerometer. But then there is the issue of games that do use the IMU data themselves, and of course, without the ability to run custom software, you still need a little be of extra hardware to interpret and translate the data.
Also on ps4 you have the option to switch button assignments, so you can decide wich joystick does what

Why didn't you just make it a joystick? 🤔 I mean that's essentially what it is.. A joystick without a a base.
you would need more than 1 hand if he did that
@@RawToast since when do you need 2 hands for a joystick?
Bases have always been an imperfect matter at home, like a 2600 base is too light while an arcade joystick is attached to a heavy cabinet. Think of the bases that already were tried with rubber feet, artificial weight, suction cups, or what could be in the base if you had only one hand, nothing really. For example I tried a 1/4 scale SF2 cab, the whole thing jiggled with every special move. Plus Ben is trying to use no more or less material or components than the original controller did.
@@paulcet there's already wire running through the shaft.. And you can make a concave / curved base that rests on your leg.. And if you really wanted to secure it, equip it with a velcro strap that goes under the thigh So no need for a 2nd hand
