Airfix Vintage Classics

Hello and welcome to badger cam, in this weeks video I am going to be starting to build my 1:24 scale Messerschmitt 109e
Being a vintage classics kit,the mould are old and far from perfect. The engines a simplified version of the real deal, but all the bits that are meant to be there are there. Over all the detail is ok, and other than tonnes and tonnes of flash, the whole thing goes together easily and simply
Iv really enjoyed building and painting this first stage of this model class and I just hope the rest of the build goes together as well.

The original 1/24th models were supplemented by hardback books written by Roy Cross and Gerald Scarborough; the “Classic Aircraft” series. The first part of the books (Cross, sometimes in association with other experts) gave a history of the aeroplane, together with a good number of reference photos. The modelling part, by Gerald Scarborough, was brilliant for correcting some flaws in the kit, conversion to other marques and super-detailing , usually involving major removal of panels, replacement of moulded pipes, additional pipe work, electrical stuff, lowering flaps etc etc. The Hurricane book was one of the best, as it covered building from scratch the tubular framework in the fuselage and cutting out all the inspection panels. I still have most of these books, even though I haven’t made a model for probably 40 years!

Sorry this has been a late reply saw a lot of detail and wanted to give a decent reply.
That sounds awesome wish more models came with detail like that.I have seen people speaking about the lack of certain details on these older larger models but would seem from what you said,that the models where released for a larger audience with the details and extra things in the books to cater for the more serious modellers out there which is nice.Are these books still kicking about?Shame they dont do that with a version of this model as I would be very interested in seeing the old style ways to am up this kit

@@scalestuff1066 The original books are now out of print, although there may be second hand ones somewhere. Your CZcams channel and others out there (The Model Shed for example) are fascinating to ex-modellers like me. I’m afraid guitars, basses and Prog Rock replaced modelling for me in the 70s, but now I’m retired I think it’s probably time to dust off my stash of models and start again. Modelling techniques have moved on considerably since I hung up my airbrush! Not just injection moulding techniques, but the wealth of after market products, like etched and turned brass, plus the bewildering array of paints, decals, tools and other stuff!

Ah I will have to have a look out for them would be nice to have a look at them on the channel
Ah tell me about it,if been building for 20 years I'm far from retiring but I'm reviewing the kits now,and stand a 70s figure next to a 2000's and the sculpts night and day.
If you are not into breaking the bank getting back into kit but want to try new releases try king kits if you are uk as they sell pre owned and checked model's.
Iv not yet built a model with a metal barrel though or tracks but I've just got one in with the suspension working which is a fair feat on a tiny tank

Looking good so far, just completed this kit a couple of weeks ago. I am more 'out of the box' builder, nice to see the little extras you added

Thanks mate tbh I'm pretty much out of the box myself there are a few things I really want to adress though like the lack of a wall in the wheel wells.but then again,on the shelf no one will ever see them

"Doodads " is a technical term used by us armour modellers. Lovely job, by the way.

The half moon part at the front is the oil tank. Because the engines are upside down you can't just have a sump at the bottom of the crank case. So, oil cooler at the bottom and associated plumbing to and from the oil tank at the front.

Was the tale wheel part fully moulded on your kit?

Just looking at it now , the wheels a rod and half the strut and a side piece,the tire is rubber one piece and the inside hub is one piece plastic, hope that helps
