    **OK, people, PLEASE STOP TRYING TO CORRECT ME. THIS IS AN E-3. NOT AN E-4. Believe it or not, the people who actually restored this airplane are fully capable of reading German. It was fairly common practice for crews to retrofit the E-4 canopy onto the older E-3 airframes. Enjoy the incredible sights and sounds of the Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3. This aircraft is a Battle of Britain veteran and is powered by a Daimler-Benz 601 engine.

    Those inverted V12s are an engineering masterpiece and show just how innovative German engineers were. When the RAF got their hands on one during the Battle of Britain they were confounded by the design features which included fully automated injection; endlessly variable blower ratios and a single cam lobe driving both exhaust and intake valves via a system of interposed roller followers!

    • @BlueBaron3339
      @BlueBaron3339 Před 7 lety +16

      For me the perfect 109 was the F4 with its round wing tips, cleaned up nose, no horizontal stabilizer struts and relocated wing radiators. But I've never flown one. Gunter Rall spoke highly of the F4, however, noting it was the best example as a fighter, "before the 109 became weighed down," as it became in subsequent versions with heavier engines and guns. Yet, I agree, the E series looked very good. Like a shark in the air.

      There would be a swastika on the tail of course if it were a scrupulous restoration. There can be legal issues, of course, if the aircraft is based in Germany. Otherwise it's a matter of debate, one side claiming that failing to include original markings are an attempt to rewrite history, others claiming there is little point to adding them because of the infamous nature of that history.

    Unbelievably good video of a very rare flying E3 - What was her Werk No. and combat/crash/restoration history ? I love the 'Emil' version, but wish someone could get a Stuka back in the air with those sirens.

    • @fight2flyphoto
      @fight2flyphoto  Před 6 lety

      Here's the history of this aircraft: Werk No. 1342 - This Bf 109 was assigned to Jagdgeschwader (fighter wing) 51 and piloted by Eduard Hemmerling, a veteran of combat in France. On July 29, 1940, during an air battle over Dover, Hemmerling earned his third victory in combat. But his own aircraft was mortally wounded, and Hemmerling turned toward home. His failing airplane crashed off the coast of Cap Blanc Nez, killing the 27-year-old pilot.
      In 1988, a man walking on the beach near Calais noticed a piece of metal sticking out of the sand-the tip of this plane’s wing. The Bf 109 was excavated and later moved to England for reconstruction and restoration. The plane was added to the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in 2007.

      +Martin Davies This museum is working on a Stuka, but their projects are done in private so no photos. It will probably take many years to finish and they have other planes to finish first that are farther along. (P-38 soon, Me-262 soon, Fw-189 on hold) The biggest problem with a Stuka is that the engineering drawings are incomplete and scattered, and you really need them to build correctly for airworthiness certification. Worldwide, there are now three E series that are flying.

    • @MrTuftynut
      @MrTuftynut Před 6 lety

      Thanks for that interesting update. Where did the Stuka or Stuka parts all come from ? Recently there was a fairly complete Stuka found, still sitting upright in warm Mediterranean waters just off Croatia I think. That would seem an ideal airframe to work from, to use or manufacture new build parts.

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease Před 6 lety +2

      +Martin Davies The Stuka is a crunched up R-2 that was salvaged in Russia many years ago. Basically complete but smashed. There is another complete R-2 in the Science Museum in Chicago, so it was recently cleaned and scanned with 3D tools and hopefully will provide some needed engineering data. That Stuka in the waters off Croatia breaks my heart. It is property of Croatia and there were talks of salvage but no and it will stay in the water for now. There is little will, interest or expertise locally for it. It is a perfect candidate to reverse-engineer a new example, but for now the scuba divers are going to wreck it until it falls apart . Export and salvage laws sometimes prevent any action on these things also.

    • @HelderMN
      @HelderMN Před 9 lety

      GTOAviator newbie question: why leaning the mixture? doesn't the mixture have to be rich for take off?

    • @dekster14LP
      @dekster14LP Před 8 lety +2

      +Helder M It's a ballance of getting the most out of the fuel in the cylinders. Too rich and too little fuel will burn. Too lean and the engine will get too hot, because more fuel also provides some cooling.
      I'm not an ME expert, but this is general to many combustion engines. It's a living thing.

    • @GTOAviator
      @GTOAviator Před 8 lety

      +Anthony Smith There's another explanation. He could have been doing a "mag check"" as we call it. It would explain the sudden drop and return of RPMs, as well as the exhaust. I still think it was a mixture check though :)

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease Před 8 lety +1

      +GTOAviator
      The Bf-109 also has a mechanism to clean fouled spark plugs by flooding the combustion chambers with fuel to generate a lot of heat. The pilot could be cleaning the plugs.

    • @DepakoteMeister
      @DepakoteMeister Před 7 lety

      More fuel would cause fouling and less heat; less fuel (a leaner mixture) creates more heat.
