  • In this model kit review, I am looking at Airfix's 1/48 Bf 109E (kit no. A05120). We'll be looking at the finished kit, weathering techniques used, the instructions, the surface detailing, the interior detail, the transparencies, the decals, and finally, I'll be giving my conclusions. I built this kit at the same time I built Tamiya's Bf 109E and Eduard's Bf 109E. I will compare those kits with this kit in this review. This simple kit has lots of competition, but is it still worth building? Let's find out together!

The finish with weathering is outstanding. Very nice representation of the 109. They were in so many theaters of operations which generated a large variation of camo schemes. One " problem" I have found in reentering the hobby after retiring is finding decal sheets with swastikas . I do have a few German aircraft in my stash I need to check, but I'd prefer to get a set that is current to the kit " age", and that also includes other decals from vintage kits Any ideas? As always I enjoy your format of kit reviews.

Thank you! I would simply look for a decal sheet that you like in the scale you want. Most decal sheets aren't kit specific (and I don't know of sheets marketed specifically for older kits). I'm often inspired by a specific color scheme on a particular aircraft and will figure out a way to get the markings I want, often using leftover decals from other kits, painting the markings, etc.

However this kit is dimensionally accurate. Unlike the Ediard and Tamiya offerings. It's a shame the surface details aren't as crisp as Eduards.

Sometimes I just want to build a basic, inexpensive kit.

Finished the build of a different BF109 1:48 airfix kit yesterday (A005120B) - contents are identical but the instructions for ordinance/fuel tank are not in present, even though the parts are in the kit. It seems the difference is really the decals. I am not convinced that the scale is really 1:48 as the pilot is about 33% smaller than 1:48 Tamiya Ground Crew with Power supply. Having said that I think the colour scheme and finish is pretty good especially as the part fitting is particularly good for an Airfix kit. As you say though, it is all about the painting and weathering that lifts this model.
