Appreciate the video. I now realize I don't need to listen to the radio after all...
😂😂😂😅😅😮😮
Honestly, try to extract the broken antenna using a #1 screw extractor first. Go slow and be patient. I was able to extract the antenna and not go through what this guy did in this video. Saved me time and money.
MANY things in this video had me cringing but it served it's purpose. I now know what the parts look like and what I DON'T want to do. The aluminum on mine is expanding due to corrosion, so I won't even attempt disassembly. I'm going to cut the parts out, carefully, with a Dremel Tool. The Dremel Tool is one of the top greatest tools of all time!
Thank you, I have been trying to replace my antenna for weeks but did not believe it could be that difficult. This video shows
that it is even more difficult than I imagined. I admire your perseverance and will resume my efforts per your demonstration.
Haha yea I’m sitting here thinking I’m stupid for destroying mine on accident too. Apparently they’re that stuck
There’s really no other way to do this once the nut seizes up. Had to do the exact same thing. Appreciate the video.
I was watching your video because I always remove the antenna before going thru a car wash and thought a part to the antenna that covers the "special nut" blew off. It appears there is no part that covers that nut from watching your video.
My Toyota mechanic friend told me two things...
A) Keep the antenna finger tight and always remove it before going thru a car wash.
B) Put a shorter aftermarket antenna on asap and keep it finger tight to greatly reduce the chances of this happening if you don't want to keep removing and reinstalling the antenna with every wash.
I am so sorry to see what you had to go thru to make your Taco nice again. I am immediately going to replace both the antennas on my '10 Tacoma and '11 Highlander to eliminate this very unfortunate situation.
Thanks for the great video and sharing your saga.
So happy I watched this video....I am NOT even going to hassle with trying this myself!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bro great video . I broke mine off through the car wash . No way I’m replacing it 😂
I have the tool and I still had to cut it out. I thought I had finally broke the nut free but I discovered the whole assembly - nut and bolt were both spinning in the housing. It was impossible to remove without cutting it. Thanks for the video and confirming I am not crazy!
Maybe a useful tip for any future repairs, but inspect the new part to see how it will be installed to get an idea of how to remove the old part, this has helped me with hidden tabs and lets me know where to pry and in what direction etc.
I feel your pain. Welcome to my life. Thanks to this video, I'm taking my truck into a repair shop. I luckily stopped trying to get the threaded broken nub out to no avail.....
Thanks man, seriously, you should do stand up comedy. I thought you were being serious at first. Thanks for the 😆 laughs. we need them now with the pandemic.
I’m doing this job this weekend. My antenna was replaced with a stubby kind and the nut appears to be glued on....awesome
Thank you. You have a great attitude.
Helped me a ton. Thank you.
I'm absolutely convinced that car manufacturers do this on purpose so that we HAVE to have dealership/mechanics fix what SHOULD BE the easiest, quickest fixes. Nothing is easy anymore. My daughter had a Volkswagen beetle years ago and something like even changing the headlights was hundreds of dollars at the dealership to replace and nearly impossible to do yourself.
I guys did the same thing to my Toyota Tundra just an min ago. Thanks for your help.
Removing the black sht was so fkng hard!!!!! I just did this in my 2005 tacoma and your video was extremely helpful but to tell you the truth i should have paid for this. I ended up breaking the black part with my grinder, lol
Thank you sooooo much for showing me what NOT to do!!! I'm sorry for your trouble. I just took a 1/8" drill bit and drilled down in the middle of the broken bolt, until it got stuck ( I slowed down the drill once it started digging into the screw so it would get stuck in there). Then slowly reversed it out. It screwed right out. Before that,,, I thought I had to unscrew that part on the top too. That wasn't the case. Then I bought a 6-3/4" flexible antenna on Amazon for $25. So much cheaper, better reception. And it is carwash proof as well.
i am going to attempt the same thing. i hope it works.
thats basically what i did but could never get the broken bolt to back out so i just drilled it all the way out
Looks like the dealer is getting mine. Thanks for trying and changing my mind
Holy dodo I have to mine now
Thanks brother for I also did some paint damage prior to watching your video.
You da man
Thanks bunches
When taking off the nut on the top of the fender, I removed the 10mm bolt on the inner fender mount first and that gave it some play to hand loosen the nut. Pressing it upward. And did the same when installing a new one. Got it hand tight then screwed in the 10mm.
Just a word of advice on using the pliers. Of course you know the pliers will destroy the nut. The proper way to use the pliers is to let the top jaw do the pulling. They are built and designed to be used that way. So, just flip the pliers over from the way that you using them and then you will be more proficient in using them.
Dude thank you for vid! Gunna try fixing mine soon. Sorry about the truck ding, but you would laugh if you could see mine. She’s all beat up. I still want my radio back tho. Good vid!
Very helpful. I appreciate your share 🤙🏼
Well I don't feel so bad now. I have multiple problems. One my truck always leaked water, but not all the time on the passenger side. Today (after 5 inches of rain last few days in St. Louis 7/10/2021 I decided once and for all to see where it was coming from. I mention this in this video because my radio antenna was always loose. So the part where the "Cars Onboard" cuts the rubber grommet, I want to cry. Someone before me did this too, and this is where the water was coming in from the inner fender! Be advised, you may want to at least stuff a rag or duck tape to keep water from coming in like it has in my truck for years. (I did have the windshield replaced thinking that was it). I too broke the antenna trying to get that stupid nut back on. I will be buying parts soon, but not sure I want to tackle this seeing what you went thru, we'll see. Thanks for video!
same thing happened to me i tried to drill and "easy out " the broken stud but my drill bit ended up off center, then i just drilled the whole thing out with 1/8 inch bit . the hole ended up slightly too big for the threads on the replacement antenna i bought off amazon so i wrapped the treads in aluminum foil and twisted the the replacement into place . I bought the shorter copper coil antenna, this all took about 10 minutes and works fine
"Okay, this is all going to hell right now guys. I'm going to Plan Y now guys and I'm going to blow this antenna up with dynamite." Hahaaa. Love your videos bro..
Snap on or any of the tool trucks sell the tool to tighten up the slotted nut to hold down the antenna down to the fender. Thanks. Liked and subscribed 👍🏽
Back in the day I found that the tape antennas work best and are invisible. It just tapes to the inside edge of your windshield. You can run it as long as you want. The roll is usually very long.
Helped a lot, what a pain in the ass! Thanks
Huge help! Thanks a ton!!
Great video 🤗. sorry for your paint 😨
Toyota wanted to charge me 620$ to replace. I will try this. Thanks.
What were the part numbers for the outer rubber mount and it's chrome hold down screw (which needs the special tool)? My hold down screw (the one that is chrome and made of white metal underneath) has corroded and crumbled over time, in the Florida heat and humidity.
Awesome video
Any suggestions on how to break off the clips that are placed within the wheel well housing that you were describing as difficult to get to? Currently replacing my antenna but cannot get those fender clips off.
I would’ve broke the crap out of that lol,
Great video 😎 smashed the like button 👍trucks still looking clean!!!
It hurt me to see the fender because I know how much u take care of that truck 😬
I was so sad when I fu$&ked my paint
I used Dewitt Titanium skinny drill bit through the center of bolt. After going about 1/8 inch down I reversed the drill with bit in and it came out with ease 👍
First the red handle pliers you grabbed them backwards, they are made with the teeth facing one direction, you grabbed them to tighten, and the plastic push pins have the locking mechanism in the center so you have to push it in with a small center lunch and that releases them
More people need to see this comment.
Thanks for the video
Trying like crazy to find this same replacement info for a 2000 Tundra....hope this is similar?
Props for putting up this video lol
Last guy that owned my tacoma cut off the antenna at the nut and grinded it down so now I have to do this as well 😂
I just fixed the same problem on my wife's Tacoma and the entire process took no longer than two minutes. Get an Irwin screw extractor size EX1 at Lowe's. Make sure you tap the extractor in with a hammer after CAREFULLY drilling the hole to ensure it's centered on the broken antenna stub. Came right out. Never turn the extractor with a drill/driver. Just use an adjustable wrench and go slowly.
I’m going to try that, thanks
I did it today! Used a small drill, not a typical drill but a small one my dad had. Unlike a drill bit, it’s used to start a small hole so that when you use the reverse hand drill bit bolt extractor, it’s doesn’t dance all over the place. And voila, I screwed out the broken stud!
If it makes you feel better I also scratched my paint using a flathead
the tool you needed is called a spanner wrench, can be bought at any parts store.
I feel your pain, I'm running into the same issues, This sucks.
Lol watching this has convinced me to pay a mechanic. Thanks.
Have to do this too. radio only gets a couple fm stations.
that castle nut is made of cheese.
got that top portion off by drilling 3/8 bit. then 5/8 at an angle and slow. that allowed it to break apart.
Im waiting on fender liner clips. because i am breaking tbem off.
Thanks bradda. that paint though.
I stopped after the screw driver didn't work.
That's been five years ago now for me
🥲
I would love to know, is it 6-7 years now?
Why do you care?
@@kylesantomo9767 to see if the uncaring to finish has continued. It was amusing.
@@tylerclontz yea its still amusing
Saved my ass at work
See process in video by Sharp Image. No need to go through all you did, not to mention the expense! So much cheaper and simpler the way the other video shows.
Hello, Same thing just happened to me, I used an easy out and backed the broken stub out no problem. Try that before using the method shown. I used a 7/64" drill bit then backed it out. This guy would have been better off buying the special tool.
Thanks saved my ass
I was cringing when you were hitting it with flathead.
This is exactly why I just pay extra to have somebody else do this kind of stuff. My antenna broke off in the car wash and I was thinking about replacing it but I’m just gonna have Toyota do it because….yea. But I do wanna get one of those aftermarket short knobby ones that are like 20 bucks. Does anyone know if those work?
I assume it’s about the same process for Tundras
Great
It would have been so funny if he broke the antenna all over again as he pulls on it to try to snap the tape
More “short films” please 😭😭😭
LMBO!! OMG! This is hilarious bro. It reminds me of the Bugs Bunny cartoons. I am wrapping my 2007 Tacoma, so I'm looking at videos to get an idea of how to remove things. In some cases what not to do. :)
Omg what a pain, I scratched my paint and went to videos, dont look like my antenna is getting replaced this weekend
Mine just broke off at the car wash. Stud broke half way down past the nut. They are reimbursing me the parts, but I'm not touching this bs.
I just used a left hand 1/16" drill bit....stud came right out and didn't have to screw with the antenna mast assembly. Too easy
Could this have gone any worse?
RIP to that fender
Looks like I wont be fixing my 2010 explorer at least the CD player a and cell works
First, i took the antenna mast off, then sprayed the nut with WD-40, and Tri-flow, followed by 3 in 1 oil. let it sit for a week. Then I ordered the Lisle tool on Amazon (Lisle 29600 #4 Antenna Nut Socket , black) about $14. Then I filed as everyone said. (with diamond files - gently.) got to where it worked. Then reinstalled the mast, and slipped the tool over it and turned with a large crescent wrench. SLOWLY. it creaked, but turned and finally turned all the way out. then was able to grab the rubber decoration and pull it off both were corroded, but did come apart. I cleaned them...but it didn't help reception, so I ordered them from my local dealer where I get 20% off. Now to install them should be fairly simple, thanks to this video. (note that mine is a 2014 base truck, so i removed the battery connections the night before. also no big fender flares.) Thanks so much again!
Looks like this happens a lot, A few ebay selling the 4 piece kit and have sold 1000's,. Just paid $112.60 for the kit.
I guess I'll just deal with a loose antenna base.
Welcome to the Donkey show 😂😂😂😂
Hey hombre after watching your vid. I found out everything I need to know. on installing that antenna. No.1 don't break your antenna cause it's a bitch to replace. I can't believe you took a hammer and flat head after your truck. You had me bust'n up..
Can you post the parts numbers please.
If you go to any Toyota dealer parts house they can print out the part number. I'm sorry I don't have them anymore.
Yo is he talking about pushclips
This is a what not to do video.. nice job scratching your truck. 😂
13:45 "Oh don't scratch my paint" Too late dude!!!
Just did this on mine what a shit job my knuckles are bleeding. I needed to change the fender anyway so I rage quit and jigsaw the shit out of the outer part
Mine was $16.99 at Autozone
Mine is just loose. Im not even gonna attempt a stunt like this
Ouch caveman
The special tool ... No...2 flat head screw drivers one for each slot and if needed use visegrips for leverage and turn came right off no probs
WD-40 then use pliers, that's what I did
That nut is really pain in the ass..sorry for the paint, man.
You have totally forgot about plan Z.
I did the same shit
I was all excited when I heard about squeezing nipples...
😅😂
Jajaja what have you done...lolol
The only tool you need for that my friend is it professional shop oh, bummer you dug yourself in the hole. The first things they say when you get yourself in a hole stop digging. For you bore through, Pandora's box. At least you're going to have the most expensive FM radio on the Block :-) good luck I got to go
this is a joke right?
Yeah somebody isn't mechanically inclined simple drill and extractor tool and take that right out I just said it right the first time ching ching ching this is when you want to pay a shop to do it is that over a hundred fifty bucks now not counting his drill bits certain jobs you got to let the pros do it. Normally they're not that complicated to get off, an older vehicles you should have gone to CZcams first and ask Google how to do it I recommend that to everybody 8 projects you're not sure about its help me tons and I know all about cars
Shut the fuck up
I was just at Toyota they quoted me $700 to fix my antenna
