when Off! came to SLC Steve stood and talked to me for like 20 minutes while he set up then I went and opened a door and saw Keith and he said, "Hey man, you can't be back here man" in his Kieth Morris drawl. It was awesome!!

Saw the Melvins on Valentine's Day 2020, Steven was a really impressive performer. Excellent bassist and just a total show boat in the best way possible. He dressed in a neon red suit with a black t shirt with a bedazzled peace sign on it. Pulling wacky faces and flipping his hair around, doing high flying kicks and jumping and doing the splits in the air and shit, he was just a blast. His bass riffs destroyed me all night, Dale and Buzz were on point too and as a whole it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I got really lucky and tried out for redd cross ( drums) in the '80s at a house in Beverly Hills. Both brothers were nice enough to try me out even though i showed up in an office getup I had to wear at my day job as a clerical temp. As I packed up my stuff afterward I overheard Steve yelling at what must have been their manager on the phone, " No we are NOT going to play at Perkins Palace with them!" " We are NOTHING like Guns & Roses! " "There crowd is totally different than ours!" He seemed really pissed off, but it showed me how much the band meant to him then......i, on the other hand, was just a skinny lanky teenager who just wanted to play with a working band on a big major label so I could quit my office job. haha I still have the recording of my audition packed away somewhere. Back then I always taped my auditions to review my performances. :-)

This is the first interview in forever that actually caught my I interest enough to sit and listen to the whole thing!! Steven McDonald is a legendary L.A. musician already, but seems so laid back and talkative, it was like listening to an old friend around the table, just telling stories and sharing insights... just about amazing L.A. punk music and beyond.

I noticed that during the part where Steve’s talking about missing his 9 year old son while he’s on the road and wishing he could just bring him with him, and then he kind of stops and says something like “…but maybe it’s better that he just has a normal childhood”… and you can just see in his eyes that he’s talking about his own weird childhood of growing up in a working band. A band that went on the road, made records, gave interviews, and even made a couple of movies… all while he was just a teenager, and even as a preteen.
I’ve often thought about what that must’ve been like. I’m the exact same age as Steve, born in ‘67, and I also started getting heavily into punk right about the time he did, when I was 11 years old. One big difference though… I was never in a working band until I was in my early twenties. There was another one our age that literally grew up on the road - Mike “Bam Bam” Sversvold, who sadly just passed away yesterday after being hooked up to life support for a good while. For him, that whole lifestyle kind of fucked him up from an early age. Steve survived and thrived… but you can tell he still struggles to make sense of it all.

I saw Redd Kross, Meat Puppets, and STP in Portland back in 1994. I actually hated Redd Kross and if i ever met Steven McDonald I’d probably tell him that had to have been an off night. But to be fair, whoever was the sound engineer didn’t know what they were doing. All they did was turn up everything. My ears were ringing for a month.
