The Beginning is my absolute favourite episode of the Dave era for Red Dwarf, and one of my Top 10 episodes for all of Red Dwarf.
After Rimmer was cruelly denied his finest hour in Series 6, I am so pleased he got his heroic triumph in Series 10. He came up with a brilliant strategy, destroyed the Simulants and saved everyone. And it was well-deserved. He also received brilliant character-development here (which is used brilliantly for later episodes), and I loved how the unresolved Series 8 cliffhanger was used for great comedy here.
If this had been the finale to Red Dwarf, it would’ve been perfect. And yet, The Beginning cemented a great new start for more Red Dwarf on Dave! Series 11 & 12 were also stellar!
The reason that they kept bringing up Kochanski in the earlier episodes is that this season was originally written to be a possible final season for the show and the plan was to bring her back for the final epiodes. However these were scrapped due to production issues and so instead what we got was a hastily written bottle episode (Dear Dave) and this one which is actually a truncated version of the final act of the once planned Red Dwarf Movie which would have been a soft reboot for the show.
The references to Series 8's ending are basically acknowledging what a mess Doug Naylor created with that whole season (also because he was planning to wrap it up and relaunch the show as a movie) and a desire to just return to the status quo as conveniently as possible.
This episode was also planned to be a possible final episode if no more were commissioned (hence it's name: "The Beginning" mirroring that of the first episode "The End".

I'm from London and when I lived in London, a friend of mine had a friend who also enjoyed your reaction videos, so when I showed my friend your reactions when they moved in with me during Lockdown during Covid in 2020, I was showing them your videos and they said their friend (who I met once or twice) was also a fan of this channel. I've since left London and live somewhere else in England. Small world though, small CZcams maybe/small internet? IDK, great channel though, I enjoy your Red Dwarf and An Idiot Abroad reactions the most.

Red Dwarf can't be beat.
This season is really looking much better than it did at the time. Good stuff. This episode was based on part of the script of the Red Dwarf movie that wasn't made.
The experiment at the beginning is actually similar to what is known as the Asch Conformity Experiment.

I was never all that keen on this one, but watching it with you made it funnier. 😀 The problem with going back in the history of the characters is that they've already been done before, so it seems to contradict itself somehow. I do like the way a continuity point is thrown away post-credits just for a gag.
I think this group is different from the original group, as we know with ace there’s alternate universes.
But realistically it might be because they restarted the show as they wanted something new but familiar for the revival.
Or because it’s switched networks to Dave, certain rights still belong to the bbc. like what happened with the evil dead movies.
