    All you need to know about the updated Vallejo Model Color range in one video. I've tested all 220 colours and will address all your burning questions: How does the new Model Color compare to the old version? Did they simply adopt the Game Color formula? Which colours were discontinued, and which new colours were added? And do they suffer from the same bubbling issue that some people have complained about with the new Game Colors? #vallejo #vallejomodelcolor #review

    Materials application specialist for the coatings industry here, the bubbling is caused by a lack of silicone oil or some other defoaming agent. This is a way of cutting costs and generally speaking, only lower quality products do this.
    Some other industries do this but hobby paints tend to not be as high quality as people think, they are typically watered house interior decoration paints or student/classroom grade paint with extra chalk, which by the way is a pigment(PW18) and this is used as a marketing trick to say they have higher pigment loads than normal. This is actually a completely normal thing to add since its a matte agent and opacifier, you just cant use kaolin which is what craft paint and most hobby whites use.

      So interesting, thanks for sharing! I found that miniature paints have stepped up in quality in recent years (with ranges like Pro Acryl, Two Thin Coats, AK 3rd Gen, Warpaints Fanatic, and Game/Model Color), would you agree? Or are these still "low quality" from your perspective?

      @BlommaBaumbart Před 2 měsíci +1

      Depends on the colour, I think. I own about three dozen of the new Game Colour and most are fine but a few will separate into having all pigments of one colour float as a separate layer which needs intense shaking to disappear. Goblin Green is one example.

    • @LEF3133
      @LEF3133 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Have you tried leaving them a minute or 2 after using the vortex to see if the bubbling has reduced. The resin for the 3D printer says to shake and leave x amount of minutes to reduce bubbles.

    Model Color has been around in the old form for almost as long as I have been around? Dang. Vallejo got it mostly right back in 98. I'm liking a lot of the changes though. I find that the old range was very thick indeed. And the one metallic I have from it is just not up to snuff for me. A thinner paint, with similarly high opacity sounds absolutely great to me.
    Honestly, the bubbling is not an issue to me. I haven't noticed it or had problems with it while using new Game Color, so it won't be an issue for new Model Color either. My local hobby store will hopefully start stocking this soon so I can give it whirl myself.

    Another great review Stahly. I did find one problem with the reviews though.
    To give an overall score for the paints can be misleading. For example - Amazing acrylics 10/10. Metallics and special effects 1/10. This would then get a 7 maybe even a 6..
    I feel they should all be separated as if they were different ranges within the brand. Hence, Brand A for acrylics 10/10. Brand B for metallics 10/10 and Brand C for fluoro's 9/10. And these, in your opinion, are the brands you should buy for each type of paint

  • @GoufinAround_
    @GoufinAround_ Před 2 měsíci

    If I need a color, I may give the new model color a try. My issue with the bubbles from game color was really bad. Idk if I was shaking them too much, but I was shaking them far less than citadel paints and was barely thinning them. Bubbles aren’t an issue if they don’t dry like that. I’ve gotten bubbles out of ak paints that never dried with the bubbles.

    Regarding the bubbles - I do remember someone else (a few years back) being told that they were mixing/shaking Vallajo bottles wrong. Instread of an up and down action they should be rolled in one palms whilst on their side. Maybe that would negate bubble forming.

    Can not buy for the moment these new formula from Vallejo,because have all old ones,new in stock.
    Yes,there are some problems with VMC,to improve their paints,i have add metallics balls iron inoxydable,add some liquitex airbrush medium,Vallejo thinner and flow improver too,all these 3 in smaller quantity.
    And every 4-6 months all go to Four E'S mixer to avoid pigments separation.
    For the moment i prefer the AK 3 gen,then Pro acryl,Kimera for their unique pigment saturation,Citadel,etc..

    Tried a few colors from the new revision, and don't have the issue with bubbling. Both VMC(2024) and VGC have worked great for me, so far. Maybe a few colors exhibit this problem moreso than others? My biggest gripe is needing to rely on online distributors for both. And as usual the popular colors: Deck Tan, Ice Yellow, Beige Red, Silver(VGC), Moon yellow, and Scorpy Green, tend to always be out of stock.

    Love the videos and thank you for being thorough. Great info there. On the bubbling issue so to speak, can we repeat all those steps you did to make it bubble with all the other paints to confirm they don’t do it ? It kind of feels that behaviour is fairly easily forced by lots of agitation, then slapping on thick and not touching it.
    Adding an extra test for one paint brand to potentially fail that none of the rest even get put through maybe is not setting up as thorough a comparison as I know you strive for.

    I had no problems with bubbling, with properly mantained brush (with hairs not spreading around), they practicly don't appear and can be easly poped anyway.
    Bubbling is a major problem for me when I use washes - thinner and thinned (and I thinned mine a lot) ones can bubble quite a lot, especially when you don't use pointy brush, but it's not that bad anyway, it just can take some time to remove the bubbles manualy.

    I wouldn't just broadly dismiss the issues with the old Model color metallics as stemming from mica flakes. Goobertown hobbies did a great video where he looked at a bunch of miniature paints under a microscope, and one of the most interesting takeaways was that there really wasn't a correlation between the quality of metallic paints and whether they used mica vs metallic flakes. You can find aluminum flakes in some cheap, unpleasant craft paint metallics, and mica in some well-regarded miniature paint metallics.

      Most beginner friendly is Army Painter Fanatic, least beginner friendly is Scale 75. The rest (AK Interactive, Citadel, Vallejo, etc.) are in the middle, but nothing especially difficult as majority started with at least two of them.
      The difference is in your painting style. Paint ranges are sorta specializing in what they do but no manufacturer wants to clearly state what is main purpose of their product to not shrink their sales.

    It's a fantastic starting point for stuff like gold because the bronze paint was mixed in with some sort of a dark medium that made the shadows of the bronze metal really dark. Probably an unwanted feature of the mix for most people, but I fucking loved it. Add in some green and purple mid tones, highlight with metal colour range gold and now you're cooking with gas.
    Really sad to see that once the two bottles I've got left are gone, I'm totally out.

    The "friction" is only part of the matter. The stiffness of synthetic brushes causes bristle separation, thereby allowing air to be introduced, not unlike a whisk used in mixing a cake batter.

      @@stahly_taleofpainters Thanks, I want to base my Horus Heresy Alpha Legion army on the old third edition lore where they have indigo armour and green symbols.
      Are you able to do another video where you investigated who made the best yellow paint but for a metallic colour, maybe silver? I'm really interested in who makes the best metallics now especially since you were very pleased with the Army Painter Fanatic metallic range.

    For my part I'm not sold on acrylic metallics. I use enamel and lacquer based metallics for superior coverage and ease of use.

    Looks like I'll stay with AK. But it is good for all of us that each company is upping their game with better quality products. Even Army Painter is now on par in the race with everyone else. AK, Army Painter, Pro Acryl, Scale 75, Vallejo and many others - it is really good time for hobbyists.

    Dang, bubbling still there. Really a shame to hear. Seems like the US market got bubbling while the EU market didn't get it as much with Game Color. I tried Game Color and sold the 10 paints I got because the bubbling happened no matter what for me. Really a shame to see it's there with Model Color and will be switching to AK since the issue is still there.

    • @israelrobles681
      @israelrobles681 Před 2 měsíci +2

      It seems US painters are a little hotheaded and paint and mix faster. While europeans take their time. Anyways I have my old model colors for like 3-5 years more XD maybe they adjust that issue later

    • @RP-ck8ym
      @RP-ck8ym Před 2 měsíci +1

      Don't agree with that, seems more something that happens along the line in the US market. Why should you have to treat the paint special when no other line has the issue? It's the paint, not the user.

  • @Valthorn898
    @Valthorn898 Před 2 měsíci +56

    It really seems like the bubbling comes from user error than the paints themselves. Using heavily watered paints and using the brush to glob on the paint seems to be the cause.

    • @RP-ck8ym
      @RP-ck8ym Před 2 měsíci +13

      Wrong. I've used almost every other brand of paint and Game Color was the first to have the bubbling issue for the main paint. Old army painter washes had it too. You should not have to work against the paint and treat it special just to not get it to bubble when no other line has the issue.

    • @GoufinAround_
      @GoufinAround_ Před 2 měsíci +4

      Game color bubbled for me a ton without thinning, however if shaking too much is an issue then that will change things.

    LOL at that example of paint bubbling 🤣. Anyone who paints in that way is going to see all kinds of issues with any type of paint. Your 2 miniature examples show intelligent painting practice which also shows no bubbling. Multiple thin coats should be the first skill we all master. Really LOL at that example of bubbling paint though 😂🤣
