  • So I'm replacing all my paints with ARMY PAINTER FANATIC and ARMY PAINTER SPEEDPAINT 2.0. But...What am I absolutely not willing to part with just yet. What am I keeping and what is being relegated to the empty Army Painter box.
    The State of Play goes through the reasoning behind the switch as well as some useful insights into why some products are staying while others are getting the chop.

    Great chat! I'm also at the point where I need to cull less-used paints to keep the really useful ones within an arm's reach of my painting desk. Your logic was solid throughout! Agreed that the largest holes in the fanatic line are darker colors- most of the "triads" seem to be missing 1-2 colors closer to black.

    • @thestateofplay2023
      @thestateofplay2023  Před 2 měsíci +11

      Brent!! Hey! Yeah, I think we all collect far too much paint and vast chunks of them never get used. Sometime I think I’m more addicted to collecting pint, than models and games!
      And we all have favourites that keep coming out time and again. Even when we want to try something else.
      It’s a shame about the darker colours as calling it “the complete set” kind of paints them into a corner. You can hardly create additional darker paints AFTER making a ‘complete’ set. 🤣

    • @Weaver_Games
      @Weaver_Games Před 2 měsíci +4

      Totally agree the fanatic range is really missing dark colours. I'm looking for holes to fill them. Pro acryl has some great dark red browns that fit my needs which is my personal biggest gap. I think AK 3rd gen is a great option but I just have no local store that sells it unfortunately - and shipping in Canada is extremely expensive. 15 bucks minimum, so it makes like no financial sense to buy one bottle online and ship it.

    You hit the nail on the head with GW paints. I had Citadel paints back in the 90's and then jumped back into the hobby in about 2015. I'v almost exclusively used GW paints since then with an occasional Vallejo or Pro Acryl paint thrown in. I've never liked the pots and have had a ton of paints dry out and have spilled a bunch of washes and contrast paints over the years and this has been highlighted ad nauseum on by hobbyists. I'm dumfounded why GW has never simply gone to dropper bottles. What I've never heard any content creators bring up is the way they pigeon hole painters into using their paints how THEY think WE should use them. Intentionally making certain paints thicker and other paints thinner for base painting just sucks, and then they create their own Dry paint line with paints that are so dry that they are guaranteed a short shelf life in their terrible pots. All acrylic paints can obviously be used for dry brushing or layering or base coating or highlights. It's all about the technique you employee. For some of the reasons you mentioned, but mostly because of the pots I've made the switch to Army Painter Fanatic paints as well. The Complete Set arrived at my house today and I'm excited to get started with them. Great content. Liked and subscribed btw.

    • @thestateofplay2023
      @thestateofplay2023  Před měsícem +1

      Thank you! You know I think GW got stuck. I’m sure they had conversations about dropper bottles but with so many pots still out in the world on shelves in hobby stores they’d lose millions if they switched to droppers now. Simply because no one would buy a pot as soon as they announced it. They’d be left recalling trillions of unsold pots. 🤣

      @@thestateofplay2023 When they made Primaris marines they knew they were going to slowly phase out mini marines as their sales were certainly going to wane. They should’ve gone with the same approach with paints. 20+ years of buying their paints for me and now likely never again. I’m excited to get to work with the new Army Painter range.

    • @blakearius
      @blakearius Před měsícem +1

      There are 3 key reasons they keep the pots. They look iconic and stand apart from the competition, they waste paint so you have to buy more paint, they are of middling quality but newbies will buy anyway. Apart from the contrast range I think they are terrible. I use AK and they are fantastic, but Vellejo is pretty good and I hear many good things about Pro Acryl. I hear Vellejo model color is getting a refresh very soon.

      Glad there's people like us! I paint a variety of stuff from board game minis, 40k, terrain, and random 3D prints I think are cool so I found I was just always going to the damn store to buy a few random colours of stuff. Especially for this 100+ mini board game I was trying to slap chop through. Would have been way more economical to just buy the whole speed paint 2.0 set than run to the store twice a week buying a few pots here and there.
      I learned my lessons with the Fanatic line and just bought the complete. Having a good time so far.
      I get like if all you wanted to do was paint a blood angel army you're just going to need just a large amount of a few specific colours but that ain't how I roll. I love having tons of options just ready at hand. And I if I'm army painting I want my notes to say "Highlight with imp yellow" not "for highlights I mixed 1 drop of pro acryl yellow, 1 drop of AK 3rd gen ivory, and thin with some Lahmian Medium". Screw that.
      Painting one off models, sure i'll mix away since nothing needs to be repeated uniformly after its done.

This was fine when I first started painting, but now that I am numb to the financial pain, I just want a complete set. I don't want to be making 123432432 trips to the LGS. It would be nice to see more companies follow suit with full or at least partial or specifically aimed sets. But for now, Army Painter is doing it well and doing it affordably as well. "Plastic crack" is a term oft used to describe our addiction to adding onto our piles (stacks, collections, elephants) of shame. I've started to refer to hobby paints as "Acrylic Heroin" (Enamel-phetamine is also under consideration). Because just like with the plastic side of the hobby, I find myself constantly grabbing new and shiny paints to (maybe) give a try. Having some idea of what I could use them with. I've been using WargamesFoundry paints the last few years, as I liked, and still do like, their ranges, but have recently received the huge new complete Army Painter Fanatic paint set, and am very impressed with the colours I've used so far.
    I make my own washes/glazes, so can't comment on the washes from the Fanatic set, but can say freely and truly that this is a set worth buying in one big box, as it solves buying the paints in individual bottles/sets of three and so on, and also the box is s nice way to store them all together, and they're all sorted into the correct colours as shown on the base of the box, too.
    There's a nice set of brushes comes with the paints, a painting guide, and a bit of advertising fluff, but that's not to complain at, as it helps new painters as well as veterans with certain painting techniques and some nice brushes to start off with.
    I absolutely LOVE the yellows in this set, as an avid fan of painting Bad Moon Orks, I had yet to find a yellow paint that covers so well over a black or even grey primer, and the yellows in this set do the job perfectly.
    So, I'm off to my own "Galaxy of Shame" in my "Ork Zone" area of my hobby space, and unleash my new paints on all the unpainted Orks that have been neglected for a while

But you can just get some Vallejo ground texture, which is 200ml for $16 CAD. I could probably base like a thousand 28mm bases with that stuff.

So I jumped on the full Fanatic set based on the coverage claims and I think they're absolutely stellar paints, I definitely fuss with it less because it just covers great. I also grabbed some of the really dark colors from the Pro Acryl line since Fanatic leans bright. But I will say Reaper is still really good for layering, sometimes the coverage of Fanatic and Pro Acryl is actually too good, or I'm still sub-par at thinning paints, I'll have to try some mediums other than water.

      Let’s see. I thought they were a great idea but single pigment colours can be terrible for coverage. Some pigments are naturally transparent so will never get full coverage no matter how many layers. Red and white. Great! Pthalo or yellows, not so much. As incredibly thick paints they need thinned almost perfectly. They need to be mixed for coverage and mix very very well. But… they keep coming out in phases. Are quite expensive and are no better than artist grade acrylics. Honestly I personally think people would be better off with liquitex, daler-rowney, or winsor & newton as they’re easier to get your hands on in any art store. 👍🏼

    It's kinda strange that when i started the hobby years ago, i bought Army Painter because it was the most accessible and affordable at the time, but i became quite frustrated when painting with those. Then i bought some scale 75 paints and because those worked better than the old army painter i replaced my entire collection with scale 75, which im now regretting immensely because they require alot of usage in order to figure out how each paint behaves, making them a very bad fit for someone who's a very casual painter like me. I've essentially got some good paints but i lack the skills and time necessary to properly use them, which in turn makes the whole painting experience quite frustrating for me.
    This in turn made the whole Fanatic paintline very tempting because of the promised consistency between paints, meaning i could just pick some colours and slap them onto a model without having to worry about them behaving any different across the range, which i've experienced quite alot with scale 75 as their Fantasy & Games and Scalecolour don't have the same consistency from what im told. However im hesitant to replace my entire paint collection once more, as it's quite expensive, storage is becoming a issue, and it feels bad to own so many paints that haven't gotten their time to shine due to user error or lack of skill. Then again i yearn for the joy i've previously experienced when painting miniatures and im not sure quite if it's a mindset issue or it's because im using paints that are too demanding for someone of my skill level.

    @waldemarbata325 Před 2 měsíci +1

    Hi, I'm also in the AP camp with Fanatic+Speedpaints combo. What I've noticed:
    1. Fanatics have great coverage. I mean, really great. But it came with a price. They are even so slightly desaturated and what I think is there is a bit of white/black pigment in every colour to increase opacity. 90% of the time it's still ok, the other 10% is when I have to glaze with speedpaints to increase saturation (Speedpaints are very vivid paints).
    2. Some colour hexades seem too narrow, like not going dark enough, and at the same time the difference between - for example - two grayish whites is to small to justify two separate bottles.
    3. Yeah, the lack of off-black - it is surprising though, because there were two nice offblack colours in original Warpaints range (Necromancer's cloak and Hardened Carapace).
    4. Why AP included only red and green in metallic colours and got rid of other colours (with my beloved Night Scales)? I'm baffled. Either keep the full OG range or get rid of that entirely (and release as expansion). Metallics also lack dark steely paint. And still I think the speedpaint metallics are superior. Somehow even zenithal priming comes through metallic speedpaints (some foul magic, I guess).

    It's stretch to say that AP fixed the Speed Paints debacle. I mean, sure, the fixed the formula, but a lot of people who pre-ordered the original line based on respectable pre-release reviewers (who weirdly enough didn't notice the issue, as Juan Hidalgo indicated) got stuck with what was for them a line of paints that was too inconvenient, having to apply a coat of varnish, letting them dry for a long period of time or having to use a hair blower or similar tools to be able to work on top of them. This extended the working time unnecessarily, especially for people who had limited time to spend on their hobby.

      @thestateofplay2023  Před měsícem +2

      Yes I was one of those people. But they could have just hid away and ignored it and told us all that’s how they were designed to work. GW won’t fix their pots even though they can get clogged open. Vallejo won’t fix their dropper lids than just crack in half. Better to admit a mistake than not - I think. I mean I’d have preferred if they took the old ones back with a refund, that would have been better. But I just use them on bases and terrain now where the reactivation can be quickly sealed with varnish.

    • @thrrax
      @thrrax Před měsícem +1

      @@thestateofplay2023 GW pots are bad for a few reasons, but the main reason is that they are designed to be wasteful. The only good use for them is washes, as it's easier to dip the brush. The only GW I own is Nuln and Agrax. :D
      I've never had issues with Vallejo lids cracking, and I use them a lot as it's my main brand.
