This is an honest and unbiased review of the new Warpaints Fanatic. If there is one thing that The Army Painter is good at, then it’s generating buzz on social media. But I found that their quality control can be hit or miss. Over the last couple of years, I tested all major miniature paint ranges, so I have a really good idea of what an acrylic paint can do these days. I tried all 216 colours of the new range, and I’ll tell you if The Army Painter can live up to their promises. #warpaintsfanatic #thearmypainter #review

    ➡ FAQ & clarifications:
    1. The Army Painter confirmed to me that they didn't change the formula of their washes. They suggested that the Fanatic washes I got perform slightly better because they arrived to me fresh out of the factory, while my reference washes from the old range are a couple of years old. In the past, I have often experienced production fluctuations with Army Painter products, which might be another explanation.
    2. Are you sponsored by The Army Painter or any other company? No. I receive free review samples but don't take any payment or sponsoring, and companies that send me their products don't have a say in the type of content or review I produce. As I cooperate with several hobby companies, I am not dependent on the goodwill of a single company, so I'm not shy of voicing my opinion. I like to compare myself to an independant movie or game critic, just for paints.
    3. But you thinned the yellow, orange, and red, they would have covered better if you didn't! Yes, but then they would have been so thick that detail would get lost and the finish would be streaky.

❤ the video. Balanced review. A few thoughts:
    1. These are probably the best paints that the Army Painter has ever made.
    2. Army painter is available everywhere, making this a collection I can restock easily when I use them up.
    3. I’m a combo speed paint 2.0 and acrylic painter, so I feel like I have a solid, compatible color system from one manufacturer.
    4. I satin varnish all my minis at conclusion for protection, so I don’t mind that these dry satin.
    5. I’m really tired of decanting Citadel paints into dropper bottles, so will likely now only buy colors that have no equivalent.
    6. The flexible triad system makes it much easier for someone like me with less artistic intuition to know that I’m picking the right highlights in the right family.
    7. Cost is a big win. This looks to be high quality paint at an affordable price point.

Same. Not that I do it much, but they're also better for drybrushing, since there's less moisture to remove from the bristles.
The way I see it, a thick paint can do everything a thinner paint can (unless it's one of those weird drybrushing paints like the Citadel Drys), and more, but the opposite isn't true.

Agreed, imho a thicker paint that needs thinning has more options, as long as it doesn't split when diluted, either with water or medium then I'll be happy.

I really appreciate your objectivity and how you honestly go over the pros and cons of each range so we can decide what works best for us. I was thinking of picking up the Mega Set of the new Warpaints, but after your review I think I will wait for the smaller starter set to try them out. I'm pretty happy with my Pro Acryl paints, and will probably just pick up a few more colors from that range (and maybe try out some of the Two Thin Coats stuff).
Also I really appreciate the feedback on the paints that are being transferred from the old Warpaints line to the new line. I have a Battletech force that uses the Dragon Red spray/paint as it's base and I'm waiting for some of the new Kickstarter mechs to finish it up, so I think I will pick up and extra can and bottle of the current paint so I can have a consistent look across the whole force.

My personal preference is a thicker paint that is thinned as needed.
Airbrush paints are my go to when I want prethinned paints which are often still really good layering paints or blending.
Having a single range that covers a lot of bases, technical paints and speed painting options is valuable in its own right.
The current mid to high end market has a glut of options (but availability and shipping mitigates it's use to entry level markets) and now thankfully with Army Painter picking up their ranges quality over all the low to mid end is also covered again.

The best thing about Army Painter is that they're available everywhere. I'd love to try AK 3rd Gen but I can't find anywhere locally that stocks single bottles and I don't want to pay $5 + shipping to try out a single bottle of paint. There's already several local stores with deep discounts on current AP Warpaints as they gear up to stock Fanatic. Between price and availability I can see me pickup up Fanatic when some of my paints run out or to replace current well used paints when they just don't cut it anymore.

For me in Canada Two Thin Coats, Reaper, and Scale 75 may as well not exist. Two Thin Coats has a few stockists listed in my province. The closest one is a 90 minute drive away and the only one that does online shipping only carries half the line lol. Pro Acryl, Vallejo, Citadel, and AP are a lot easier to get for me in my location so they're basically what I use.

Fanatic seems pretty good, but Vallejo still seems hands down the best proposition in general: can get it for 2.3Eur per bottle and no need to get a set for the discount (except the xpress line), great consistency across the range, and I prefer matte as a standard since I was used to Citadel getting glossier and glossier after 1 coat until I had shiny tree leaves/wood details after 2-3 thin layers 😢 Also they are great mixed with water, and have insane shelf life as well (have 20 year old paints still working fine!).

If all the reviews truly are unbiased, then these are the best paints at their price point if they're sold at the same price as the current war paints. They're also far more widely available than most brands. My local store only carries Citadel, 2 Thin Coats, Vallejo, and Army Painter. Will I replace my whole range? Nah. Will I pick them up if I want a specific colour? Heck yeah.
I will also argue that being able to mix your paints and colour match is an invaluable skill, but the hexad system of these paints will really help new painters out!

I've always liked Army Painter their brushes and tools. The Regiment brush is and remains a workhorse for me. Never used their paints though. Good to see them putting out a very solid range here. They might not be the very best, but the Fanatic paints are looking like another great addition to our hobby toolkits. We're really being spoiled for choice here.
It's good to finally see an orange-y gold that can stand up to Retributor Armour. That paint is and remains the gold standard in... Well... Gold... The flexible triad system and detailed descriptions on the bottles is something every single other paint range can and should take notes from. Having such an expansive clearly laid out palette of colours is just so nice to have. Now they just need to fill out some of the small gaps left in the range. One or two more triads might be all it takes.
On a different note: excellent taste in manga in that bottom left corner Stahly!

However, thanks to your unbiased and superb review I have decided to give the Fanatic range a miss. Great review! You only briefly touched on pricing though, and if you actually are able to purchase the huge complete fanatic set of 216, it’s $3.50 per bottle, and you also get 4 very nice brushes and 2 mixing balls per bottle, which probably amounts to around $35 value, making the paint set final cost about $3.35 USD per bottle (before tax). That’s the absolute best price in the business, for a set of paints that has everything, rated 8.5/10 by this video. That’s the main reason I ordered the complete set. It’s an unbeatable deal.

I have no arguments with the final points on Pro Acryl and New Vallejo Game Color being a better alternative. I had planned on buying in to the new Game Colors but I haven't found anywhere in the UK that stocks the entire range. They have a very nice turn your brain off property about them. Grab these, Grab a shade, grab the next color down, repeat for however far you want to go into the highlighting. I do feel the range could have been tightened up a bit, there are quite a few tones that are pretty samesy, and as many have said the paints seem to have a heavy level of white in them leading the selection to feel very pastel.
I really like all the washes, though some of them are kinda samesy as well. looking at you Sepia, Soft tone, light tone, and rust tone.

Great job as usual, Stahly!! One rec I’d have if this is even something you’d do - two of my favorite paints are discontinued and I’m not aware of anyone making an exact match, and I’d love to see a series on how to try and replicate such paints using existing ones.
For example, my two are Titillating Pink from GW’s original range and Warcolours Nostalgia 88 range, and the Cryptek Armourshade that GW used to make until they dropped all the glossy washes.
I’d love to see how/if there’s a way of modifying an existing pink to get it as bright, or what mix of browns, blacks, and glossy medium would be needed to replicate a glossy wash.

    • @stahly_taleofpainters
      @stahly_taleofpainters  Před 5 měsíci
