4:40 Fun fact: What Kenji Fukuya meant about Genghis Khan was highly probably actually referring to a style of grilling mutton. This grilling style is named as such because muttons are not usually consumed in Japan, and was popularized as a dish that was inspired by Mongol cuisine. The pan used for grilling also bears a resemblance to the helmets that Mongol soldiers wear in battle, hence the dish being named "Genghis Khan" not unlike how pizza with BBQ sauce and pineapples being named "Hawaiian Pizza" The dish also originated in Hokkaidō, which was Kenji Futuya's hometown and is a very popular dish to be consumed with alcohol, which he is a also a fan of :)
If they re-released bloody roar I would buy it. I played the hell out of one and played some of three. I dont have a ps2 now so I cant even get into two unless they do. It would be really nice to see it.
The animators behind the Gamecube Bloody Roar intro and ending animation was behind the Jojo's Bizarre Adventures OVA! They also worked on GiJoe and other classics!
The character designer even worked on Berserk 1997, Air Master, Baki the Grappler 2001 (& character designed the 1994 OVA), Casshern Sins and...get this: Heartcatch Precure and Ojamajou/Magical Doremi (I wish I made those last two up).
Fun fact the guys who animated the anime cutscenes from Primal Fury also worked on the Street Fighter anime adaptations from the 90s as well as the first series of Baki.

The Japanese opening of Bloody Roar 3 is great as well. I like the cheesiness of the American opening, with everyone uniting against Xion, but the Japanese op is cooler and edgier.
Bloody Roar was the first ever Esports i knew since my childhood. In my very local region in Europe it was played through gaming magazine / toy seller company (i seriously don't remember their names) but like all esports game it was mostly sponsored by both in the early 2000's. There was no price pool but winner did get a cool trophy and it was mostly for kids aged 8-12. I think i was like 9 back then or something. Now i know there been many of these game tournaments before but that was something that i witnessed and it was so cool.

I'm glad people are still keeping the spirit of Bloody Roar alive.Bloody Roar 2 was the game that my late older brother and I grew up playing a lot as kids and fittingly enough our mains were his being Yugo the Wolf and mine being Yugo's adoptive younger brother Kenji aka Bakuryu the Mole and it's one of those games that I still think fondly of. I do hope someone will make a spiritual successor to this series so more people can grow up enjoying it as much as my brother and I have.
Happy 25 years to this underrated gem of a series and _fuck Konami!_ Bloody Roar 5/reboot Build the Roster when? Also the BR2 redub cast is basically now my headcanon for what these characters sound like, regardless of how the other games cast them.
Jenny the sexy Bat, Stun the Zx-tole Insect, Xion the Dante/ Guyver unborn and Cronos, the Marik Ishtar, Phoenix! All my favorites to this beloved series and man!!! I seriously love the anime/ media nods in this series!
I'm so happy to see that a dedicated bloody roar video like this exists. This game has been my all time favorite fighting game since I 1st saw it in 98. I was 4, so memories weren't gonna stick much at that time, but this game STUCK. A ninja mole vs Kung Fu tigers to fast pace rock? Who could forget something so damn cool. I can't imagine this game coming back, but this game will always be a favorite for me and I'll sing it's praises til the sun blows up.
just recently stumbled upon your retrospectives, and despite being 45 and never really being a big fighting game fan outside of arcades when I was a teen, I'm REALLY enjoying watching these!
I knew this game because a friend of mine was named after one of the characters. He said his father originally wanted to name him "Ryuken", but his mother thought that name was corny, so a bloody roar name was chosen. That prompted me to get primal fury, and my goodness it has been amazing. Glad this video taught me 8ing's origins, hudsons big hurrah in the fgc before konami, and the main reason why my friend has a certain name. Great vid haha
Totally off topic but Jingisukan (ジンギスカン) is probably what he was referring to. Jingisukan is a well-known Hokkaido dish. That being said, as a long time BR fan, this made me happy.
Damn, this series sounds amazing. Sad about the way it ended. If it ever gets a revival (long shot, I know), I kinda hope that Mitsuko gets to return, since she sounds really unique for a fighting game lady, and it feels like a missed opportunity she was only in the first one. And Nagi feels like she could be reworked into a scorpion: red, slender, vaguely exoskeltal, and the blade could be turned into either a misshapen claw or misplaced stinger. Just give her a more complete transformation to feel less out of place, but still keep the same fighting style and roughly the same hitboxes, so for anybody who enjoyed her gameplay, she could still feel familiar.
I think after all this time, Mitsuko is still one of the best characters despite her 1 game appearance. The concept of an aging buff mom is cool af. For Nagi, your scorpion take is good direction they could've went with. Theres only 1 insect type and she wouldve fit right in. I thought the devs would make Xion and Nagi Crab/ Crustacean type zoanthropes. The way they animated her moves revolving around her blade just made her so viseral. A missed opportunity.
If I remember right, Mitsuko didn't return because folks complained that she was a stereotype (literal boarish woman). As for how a continuation/soft reboot should go? I think that it should follow the storyline of Bloody Roar: Extreme/Primal Fury and retcon Bloody Roar 3 and 4 into in-universe movies that somehow managed to get the cast of the the other games to star in the films...
@@26th_Primarch a buff boar mom would blow up in today like lesbians are gonna go crazy over her and nobody will think she is a stereotype because she isn't fat she is buff and i hope she is not going to be grossly downgraded to fetish boob monster or normie sexy woman
I'm so glad Bloody Roar is getting a chance to shine in this retrospective! Good boy, Professor Thorgi!! Perfect game for Halloween to compliment your awesome Darkstalkers video!
But seriously, why did this series not continue? It is 2022 and so far a plethora of beloved fighting games of the past have had a resurgence. The concept in terms of gameplay and the further mechanics were so unique at the time that it's really a loss, just letting all of this go to waste in the modern era of fighting games.
Konami has recently hoarding licenses and this game still haven’t see the light of day Hopefully with resurgence of Silent Hill games, they changed their mind
Just for clarification, the Japanese Bloody Roar Extreme for the Gamecube also had the balance changes that the Xbox version had, and it is the preferred version of the game for online matches and tournaments nowadays (also being the version featured in Combo Breaker 2022)
I literally have Bakuryu's Crest tattoed in my right arm. I grew up with these games and I love them. I am very happy you made a video about them. I am terrible with fighting games, but I love this series for a reason you forgot to mention: All the characters inputs are the same. If you press down+forward+punch/kick/beast your character is going to do something. I love it because you don't really need to learn an infinite number of combinations, you only need to know the characters. But it is a small detail. I loved the video. Thank you for talking about one of my favorite games!
Thank you for briefly touching on the copyright thing! Copyright/Trademark Hoarding is a frustrating and all too common occurrence in all entertainment industries and it just sucks to see people get their hopes up for nothing. :( Anyway, while I didn't actually play the games, I do remember watching one of my brothers rent and play BR2 and it kind of always stuck with me (Uriko was the character I remembered the most probably because I was a young kid and was like "ooh a catgirl!") so it's cool to learn more about the series. I actually have ideas of potential fighters in a hypothetical new game as a character creation exercise for fun. Who's gonna stop me? Konami? Lol.
I feel like Bloody Roar would be a good series to constantly have fan polls for. Imagine a modern BR game where you've got your staples in the base game, then for DLC you get new characters *but* you get to vote for what their animal form would be! Imagine a 6-character DLC season where players got to vote for all 6 new animal forms! That would be pretty fun, I think.
Bro don't say that! I am still pissed that a game like BR can't even experience that because fucking Konami did diddly shit with it's property. They literally murdered my childhood franchise. BR could have LITERALLY be one of the greatest fighting games ever. It had the potential to.
Must say, I'm a huge fan of this series for many reasons, not the least of which being that it's really fun to play, however, I really appreciate that you highlighted one of the most underappreciated and unique aspects of Bloody Roar: the story. For a fighting game, Bloody Roar has, arguably, some of the deepest, most complex and genuinely thought-provoking and well done lore of *ANY* fighting game, and I'm grateful you seemed to pick up on that, too.
Yo Thorgi, there's one thing you forgot to mention about BR PF/EX. When in Hyper Beast mode, each character has now a passive ability unique to them. Cronos gains new Beast Drives, Busuzima turns invisible, Jenny regains true health, etc. Besides that, everything was spot on!
I got my jump into Bloody Roar with #2. It was my very 1st game I ever bought for PSX( I mowed so many lawns that summer!) . Since then, I learned all those crazy extended combos, unlimiteds, and went insane with the PS2/Gamecube/ Xbox versions! Such a great time in gaming!
I remember picking up Bloody Roar right after it came out in '97, and the sequel in '99. Normally, I suck at fighting games, I would get my ass beat in Tekken, Street Fighter, and Virtua Fighter, but for the first time I was able to hold my own (and in some cases dominate) in this series. I loved Bloody Roar, and it's such a shame that the last game became a mess of bad design and bad decisions. I would love to see a remastered version of the first game, or even a full on anime series about the canon storyline -- the characters and their struggles always made me love the game, but it was the endings and how some characters never returned that had me on the edge of my seat for the next game.
Always ready to jump in line for looking back on Bloody Roar again, and this time I'm the first in line. If only a few youtube personalities and others would jump in at once and jump on Konami in their social media about geting a new one. I'd often try to go it on my own, if only others ould really join in. They only listen if a stampede of the more well known and their fans come slamming on the social media door in mass.
@@TheDarkAcePrime Still hanging in. Never quite the same but still here. Every so often I push on Konami's comments but pushed on some other game angles another way. But bit by bit with others we could collectively gain traction. I said Eighting could be asked on by Konami or ArcSystems. Now Eighting recently proved they can make something that looks like ArcSys. Imagine if they made a new Bloody Roar and a much needed 3D movement fighter with a near Guilty Gear like style. I think with what we've seen with Eighting's new game, it's possible. Just not sure how well I can play it now, but would still like to see it.
If we get a new official entry in the series and by that I mean a entry that is not a Pachinko/Slot Machine or a Mobile Title a CaC mode and a story/secondary story mode dedicated to the CaC would be awesome and make up for BR4's "sigh" Career Mode. You know how Street Fighter 6, and more then likely Soul Calibur 7 if and when Bandai-Namco decides to do a SC7 will have Character Creation and have either the story mode in the case of SF6, or a secondary story mode for a hypothetic SC7 dedicated to the Custom Character, well I think that would be awesome for a proper BR5 especially with the idea of being mentored by the core cast of characters and learning their moves, now has that lead into making up for BR4's Career Mode. Well Career Mode had it to where you can customize a character by completing various fights and earning what was called DNA Points and by spending DNA Points you can get the abilities and signature techniques including Beast Drives of other characters and you can use them to create a character with a custom moveset and before you say this sounds like a Create-A-Zoanthrope Mode it's not because this "Custom Character" you're making is already one of the established characters on BR4's roster, and to make it worse this is how you unlock characters now when BR4 came out there is 4 missing slots those being Uranus, Khoryu, and shockingly for stupid aka BS reasons Long, and Shina characters who have been mainstays since the first 2 games. And speaking of unlocking characters in the Career Mode the DNA Points Prices led to mixed to mostly negative reactions basically spending 50,000 DNA Points each aka a total of 100,000 points to unlock Uranus, and Khoryu was not that bad as they have been unlockable characters since BR3, and spending a whopping 1,000,000 DNA Points to unlock the game's final boss Dragon Ryoho as playable fighter was not that bad as well cause yeah it's the final boss of course it's going to take a massive amount of points, and massive amount of grinding to reach said massive point amount to unlock him, the issue was the fact it took 10,000 DNA Points each to unlock Shina and Long and yeah us fans did not like the idea of grinding in Career Mode to reach 50,000 points just to unlock 2 characters who should've been on the base roster to being with.
@@TheDarkAcePrime and occasionally hammer on KONAMI's door. Not to mention their CZcams channel. We hammer on it at once, and things happen. I'm telling ya, we hammer, just hammer enough often and enough at once. Make them see that others see and can't be denied. Riddle the CZcams posts on their JP channel now and again with friends.
I'm still watching the premiere but I want to say that Puyo's developer making Bloody Roar isn't that surprising. While Puyo is pretty tame, the original series that Puyo spun-off from included a complicated plot about reincarnation and an intense and bloody decapitation scene. Puyo itself was inspired by fighting games, inspiring its combo system, and its large roster. It's not super out of the norm for them to make a brutal fighting game.
The decapitation and other gore-y stuff is actually almost exclusive to the PC98 port of the games you mentioned; the other versions aren't nearly as dark (but still pretty dark and silly at the same time)
Great retrospective Professor Thorgi!!! Bloody Roar is an amazing franchise, an HD Collection would be awesome. Also, Bloody Roar 4 was the first BR I played, it was really bad and that hasn't changed, but I had fun playing with Uranus (she can easily destroy everyone in her path, including Dragon). A pity that she does not have an ending.
Now I get why a creator I follow loves Bloody Roar, this was a fantastic video. Your retrospectives are a blessing to a fellow casual fan like myself who enjoys fighting games for their story.
Thorgi’s Arcade thank you so much for making a retrospective of this awesome radical gem of a classic game. I really hope this franchise makes a comeback in the future.
Man that ending about the fandub and love from the fans really got some glossy eyes out of me. I grew up with these games on release post BR1, I remember when I unlocked Primal Fury's potential for myself but all my friends already moved on to other games so I was just there playing the game alone for a while(around 2005-2007). Knowing players of all ages are still playing and still giving the games love really makes me happy. Thanks a lot for doing this piece Thorgi, the channel's work always makes an old man like me happy.
Would have really made sense if Godot was a secret boss after defeating Shen Long. Like Godot is looking for a strong leader, but not just anyone can accomplish that so he comes at you after learning that you've managed to overcome that strong enemy. You must be able to defeat Shen Long to stand a chance.
I was a 7 year old kid when I played Bloody Roar 4 and had a great time. I remember getting bored of it kinda fast even at that age, but the concept was so cool that it inspired me to create my first ever OG character, and some years later a full (sorta) story based on that character (and some others). I only played the fourth one tho (which ended being the worst apparently). So imagine my surprise when I, the one that made a guy that transforms into a black werewolf with wings, see in this video that there was already a werewolf with wings. Also I made a character that transforms into a fenix too, but hadn't made a penguin character yet... Maybe I will xD
You know I'm surprised that there hasn't been another fighting game made to be the spiritual successor of Bloody Roar, there's obviously demand for a fighting game where fighters turn into beastkin, and with a rising trend of TV Shows, Movies and Manga involving beastfolk like Zootopia, Beastars, Brand New Animal and The Bad Guys I'm surprised no other devs have taken a wild stab at their own take on Bloody Roar, personally BNA Brand New Animal would be the perfect material for a Bloody Roar styled fighting game seeing as the characters in the show have both Human and Beast forms and has a wolf protagonist in Shirou, that would be awesome to see, at least for me personally.
Yeah I have to add as someone who played this game for long hours as a youth... its Special and I'm happy to see that other people also remember it so fondly. Maybe someday Konami will come to it's senses and realize they're sitting on a gold mine. ... and maybe of all pipe dreams possible... they Hire 8ting to make them a new version... I can dream can't I?
I want a sequel. I have been clamouring for a proper sequel for over a decade. Bakuryu was also one of my favs. But I also missed Greg after 1. He was great. And they went alien mode way too quick.
It's hard to make a story keep going for fighting games. Especially for BR. Hell, I find it hard how SF keeps going using M.Bison as the main villain as new characters are being brought out and looking strong when you have to wonder, where were they before. Regardless I love this series for than SF because of the fighting system aside from that auto block feature. Similar to KoF as well, in some way.
Great retrospective, happy to say I was lucky enough to play hours of Primal Fury with a friend when it launched and always thought it was the best example of how good Bloody Roar could be. Either Konami needs to outsource a developer to bring this back or maybe someone buys it off them.
Fascinating idea of a game and a really good retrospective! I’m not a big fighting game fan for like gameplay but your videos are so dedicated and full of love that I can’t help but watch it even for something like this that I had no idea about.
One thing I noticed was that Shena/Marvel sort of resembles Seras Victoria from Hellsing. Could be a coincidence but still, a neat coincidence. P.S. The announcer for Primal Fury is also the same VA for Grandpa Max and the Colonel from Metal Gear
Great stuff. Recently discovered your channel. I'm a huge fighting game fan and these videos bring back a lot of memories. I'll throw 2 more series out there that I'm sure would get a lot of views - Killer Instinct and Soul Edge/Calibur 🙂
I used to go to practice (or training) and put it on dodge mode. Watching the computer perfectly dodge a 30hit combo was one of the original sparks in a lifelong fascination with martial arts, fight sports and shounen anime
27:05 Bloody Roar 1’s music does not sound like 90’s grunge. Bloody Roar 1 music is more like Power Metal, I can hear it in the drum rhythm and guitar solos. Also Grunge music does not focus on guitar solos. Notice how grunge bands such as Nirvana have no dedicated guitar solos. During the 90s, Metal was still very popular in Japan. Metal bands such as X Japan and Seikima-II were mainstream and had a huge impact on Japanese pop culture. EDIT: Additionally, I believe the clothing style with leather, belts and flashy appearance is more influenced by 90’s Visual Kei fashion.
I appreciate the work going into these, nobody is really doing these long retrospectives into fighting game series with details on development and the enviroment it was releasing in, but I need to start a "back in the day" counter
This channel is absolutely goated, the passion and effort out into these videos is top tier and videos like these make me go out of my way to find as many fighting games as I can. I may be trash, and won't likely get many online achievements, but I still always have a blast. Channels like this have reminded me not only that fighting games are an old favorite of mine but also why. I'm mostly into RPGs these days but I've been loving going back through fighting game history

Played Bloody Roar since the first one a long time ago. Somehow with Silent Hill 2 getting a nod to have a remake, I'm hoping Konami can bring Bloody Roar to this generation of consoles. But a man can dream.
1:06:40 I swear I remember seeing some character bios on one of Hudson's official Bloody Roar websites that mentioned that, like the mythology of their names, Uranus is apparently the mother of this Chronos. And implies that Uranus is actually meant to be an aged-up clone of Uriko that was made after her abduction in the first game. Which kind of backs up some of Uriko or Chronos' ending in Primal Fury/Extreme where it seems some degree of maternal instinct to protect "her son" triggers Uriko to use her full "human" beast form from the first game since that same silhouette is seen protecting him from the debris.
I thought it would allude to Uranus being cronos' literal mother in the game too. Since his last boss is uranus. I didnt realize that bit in urikos story which is really cool.

I honestly thought Xion reminded me of Maximillian Pegasus when he had both his eyes and want through a punk phase. 😂
@@Dinker27 I can Definately see the Pegasus vibe! It's not like BL hasn't done Yugioh inspired or looking characters!

One of the best most underrated classics. Bloody roar 2 definitely in the top 5 best fighting games of the 90s
Gado and shenlong 🔥
Can we know what your friend ended up getting named?

Totally off topic but Jingisukan (ジンギスカン) is probably what he was referring to. Jingisukan is a well-known Hokkaido dish. That being said, as a long time BR fan, this made me happy.
Even to this day I can't get over how hard the intro to Bloody Roar 2 goes.
I like bloody roar 3s slightly better but 2 went very hard indeed
wait till you see the Japanese version
I forgot how lit the intro was to this game! Anime AF 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
But seriously, why did this series not continue? It is 2022 and so far a plethora of beloved fighting games of the past have had a resurgence. The concept in terms of gameplay and the further mechanics were so unique at the time that it's really a loss, just letting all of this go to waste in the modern era of fighting games.
Konami has recently hoarding licenses and this game still haven’t see the light of day
Hopefully with resurgence of Silent Hill games, they changed their mind
And we still haven't seen jack shit in 2024
I've come to the conclusion that Fukuya is my spirit animal.
If I was a Zoanoid, I'd just transform into him.
Just for clarification, the Japanese Bloody Roar Extreme for the Gamecube also had the balance changes that the Xbox version had, and it is the preferred version of the game for online matches and tournaments nowadays (also being the version featured in Combo Breaker 2022)
As a Sony fanboy since PS1, I was always butthurt about this.
Hyped for this. Also hoping for a new entry in the series that's not a Pachinko Machine or Mobile Title.
BR2's arcade soundtrack is one of my favorite of all time
Thank you for briefly touching on the copyright thing! Copyright/Trademark Hoarding is a frustrating and all too common occurrence in all entertainment industries and it just sucks to see people get their hopes up for nothing. :(
Anyway, while I didn't actually play the games, I do remember watching one of my brothers rent and play BR2 and it kind of always stuck with me (Uriko was the character I remembered the most probably because I was a young kid and was like "ooh a catgirl!") so it's cool to learn more about the series.
Great idea.
@@Trey_W I had a very similar thought to this before, would loveee that!
Damn I like that concept
Nobody would buy it.
It's been a while old friend
@@Bangcat We can just only hope and pray
I have a Sky Pirate project going on for a couple years now for things like Crimson Skies, and devs be hopping on a bit. Re release of Sky Drift and Brew Barons is out on Steam next month.
Wait, what do you mean Xion isn't an animal? Exoskeleton, antenna, knife arms; that sounds like a preying mantis to me.
Bloody Roar STILL needs a sixth installment and a anime adaptation to this day!
I never played any Bloody Roar but I've seen some gameplay videos of it. Looks very unique.
I'm surprised Kenji Fukuya hadn't made a game based on The Killing Bites
Would be so ironic too, since killing bites was inspired by BR
Not too surprising given killing bites status.
@@fightingmedialounge519what's the status on it???
@@Fuckyoutubecensorship1 nothing too significant. Just that it isn't particularly popular( only garnering a 13 episode season).

The Primal Fury intro still goes hard, top 3 fighting game intros
Man that ending about the fandub and love from the fans really got some glossy eyes out of me. I grew up with these games on release post BR1, I remember when I unlocked Primal Fury's potential for myself but all my friends already moved on to other games so I was just there playing the game alone for a while(around 2005-2007).
Knowing players of all ages are still playing and still giving the games love really makes me happy. Thanks a lot for doing this piece Thorgi, the channel's work always makes an old man like me happy.
*BRING BACK BLOODY ROAR*
I have always wondered what bloody roar was and this is a great introduction.
The one time when "Just block bro" is legitimate viable strategy. Lol
Maybe I will xD
time for learn the lore and history of another random fighting game! thanks as always thorgi!
I've been screaming for just "something" new in the Bloody Roar saga.
Also the Legend of Dragoon
Starting at Bloody Roar 2. Bakuryu is my favorite due to his Hiei-Vibe (these days you probably said Sasuke -Vibe)
1 through 3's opening theme plays
"yay my childhood"
4's opening plays
"nooo my childhood"
One thing I noticed was that Shena/Marvel sort of resembles Seras Victoria from Hellsing. Could be a coincidence but still, a neat coincidence.
P.S. The announcer for Primal Fury is also the same VA for Grandpa Max and the Colonel from Metal Gear
Paul Eiding?! That's wild
Love your retrospectives Thorgi! Thanks for all the great content!❤️
Bloody Roar is fucking awesome and totally deserves a collection of all the games with rollback netcode
Just an HD collection with 1,2 and Primal Fury/Extreme + rollback. I wouldn't even be mad if there was no sequel.
Maan, when I saw the length of the video was I was like "no way". Ended up watching the whole thing. Amazing job, really enjoyed it. Much respect 💪
I appreciate the work going into these, nobody is really doing these long retrospectives into fighting game series with details on development and the enviroment it was releasing in, but I need to start a "back in the day" counter

My God, I never knew this game had an actual story. I love the retrospective series and I love Bloody Roar
I really loved this series as a kid and I still do! Here's Hoping this'll make a comback in some form or another! Great Vid once again Thorgi!
Hope so
As a kid it genuinely felt like Bloody roar was a fever dream remembered only by me and my sister lol I never expected to see it become talked about so much in the fgc.

Love these games I started at Bloody Roar 2 and 3 was my jam. Let's make a Sequel or Let's Build a Roster for Blood Roar 5/remake when? 😁
Good job, dude! You have officially become my new reference for fighting game commentary. Your work is appreciated!
"Man I sure do miss Bloody Roar. Such a shame that it'll never come back"
*Exactly one day later*
You know what algorithm? You ain't so bad after all. Even if you recommend me Jacksepticeye videos despite me never watching them.
One of my favorite fighting games of all time!
The best part of these retrospectives is my realization that a franchise I gave a passing glance to was actually more than 1 or 2 games.
Always loved how Gato was basically just rocking(pun intended) a Rugal fit.
Primal Fury and 4 were some of my favorite fighting games but my god was coming from PF to BR4 was the closest experience to whiplash I ever got all the good stuff from PF got ripped straight outta BR4 and now I finally got an answer to why……. Damn you Konami
This series deserve a revival. The concept alone is one of the most unique in fighting games and this could be done so well with modern tech.
They didn't do a good job with good tech, we have no reasons to believe now would be different.
