    Bloody Roar is so sick! Hear the tragic tale of its cruel demise at the hands of Konami and consumers alike!
    This is a fairly surface-level analysis of competitive viability and mechanics throughout the series' lifespan. I fully cop to the fact that I don't know everything - there isn't a ton of info already because the series never reached the heights of Street Fighter, but it had so much potential.
    So join me in remembering Bloody Roar - and if you'd like to help support the show, here's the link to my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/kbash?fan_lan...
    **I've been hearing some frustrated people mention they don't like me implying that the competitive potential of the series is nonexistent. Apologies - just assumed it was self-evident. The "most" competitively viable things aren't always the things that become competitive - the point was more that Bloody Roar has fans, and even people who are interested in the scene, but the scene is small. It's not going to be a money game, you know? I'll try to be less loose with that kind of thing in the future. If you're into it, more power to you. As it stands, it's my understanding that Japanese copies of the Xtreme games are the most viable, which would mean lower potential access and therefore lower mass-success.

    This game is always going to hold a special place in my heart, because my then-girlfriend, now-fiancee and I bonded over it. It was briefly after discussing our mutual love of gaming that she mentioned she was a huge fan of this fighting-game that I had never heard of, and one of our first dates was at her place, battling back and forth while I internally thought that I'd 'take it easy on her' before she subsequently wiped the floor with me, only to find out later that she'd been thinking the exact same thing. Then when I 'got serious', she proceeded to wipe the floor with me yet again.

    Bloody Roar Primal Fury is one of THE games that wholeheartedly embraced the "early 2000's" vibes; Over-the-top guitar shredding, unrealistically vivid fashion sense (and an explosion of color in general) and an emphasis on style over substance. A lot of the claims of balance issues coming from the old SRK threads are way overblown the games actually have pretty good balance, especially the updated Japanese version of Extreme. BR4 was a complete mess though not just balance wise but it was clearly an unfinished game with many bugs that made it borderline unplayable.

      It’s too bad the series as a whole never fully got the recognition it deserves. Okay yes, the series left on a sour note with 4, but the games between BR2 and Extreme were the peak mechanics-wise, even if they had their negatives as the video describes. Yet Extreme is so far polished mechanic-wise, that it deserves a spot at Combo Breaker, if EVO isn’t gonna provide that opportunity (and now they won’t since EVO is essentially dead for good).

This series has so much potential and 4 fell into tragedy. Just wonder how this series can be made into a reboot? We need a lot of animals not just on land, but also from air & sea!
    Have a real human join the roster, who's a hunter/huntress of zoanthropes where the fighter actually calls on a battlesuit to battle zoans in their animal forms.

Like Skull Girls, Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Injustice, Blaze Blue, Gran Blue Fantasy vs, Them fighting herds which is brand new based off of MLP:FIM, Smash Bros the list goes on.
      Oh and DOA, Soul Calibur are still alive. The only dead fighting game franchises that need to make a return are Virtua Fighter and Killer Instinct. Bloody Roar is cool but it can stay dead and niche. We have too much to play with already!

      What is the logic in that? You just said you’d want VF and KI to make a return yet you say there is too much fighting games to play as an excuse for BR not to make a return in spite of saying its a kool game contrast to something rubbish like Shaq Fu or something none of us are asking for. Imo you can never have too much fighting games I would like SNK to bring back Fatal Fury and AOF as its separate continuity from KOF be it a remaster/reboot or long awaited sequel to where they left off, same goes with Bloody Roar I’m in favor of it’s return one day, KI I’m sure is still a thing from KI3 coming out 2013 they’ll drop a new one I’m sure. I'd want VF to comeback and actually have a story this time outside the manual.

    • @corpsedesecrator2612
      @corpsedesecrator2612 Před 3 lety

      I mean I think KI is still a thing they made the last game in 2013 one of the first games on Xbox One so I’m sure there is room for a future installment people including myself still play KI3 and you got to remember KI2 last came out on N64 mid 90s so KI3 is a BIG comeback thats still living its glory imo, plus when you look at it Capcom takes a while to make SF installments between like an 8 yr gap between SFIV/SFV even though they made enhanced editions of IV between even when you look at SF3 Third Strike late 90s with the Alpha and EX series around that time and SFIV 2008 thats almost a decade. Still VF and BR are no doubt still buried and need to be revived like a Phoenix from the Ashes.I think if Konami brings back BR they should HD remaster the first game maybe BR2 also since that’s the best one as a double combo edition lol and the following few yrs make a long awaited BR5 sequel. For VF they need they first off need to make a freakin story actually in the game no one especially these days will dig in the manual to figure out whats going on, character prologues and endings or something, give us a new final boss I’m tired of Dural like everyone, expand the move sets and combos and that should be VF6 should be on par to compete with Tekken with these changes. And yeah thats my opinion on the future we can hope for.

  • @GELTONZ
    @GELTONZ Před 3 lety +7

    I love how you think the FGC didn't play it because there was something wrong with it. No, the FGC was just the Capcom Fanboy Club back when this game came out. Eighting wasn't a known fighting game company so they never really gave the game much of a chance outside of 3 due to it being such an early PS2 release. Sorry but I remember arguing in favor of these games back when they were new and it was all wall to wall hypocrisy.
    It WAS refreshing hearing you go into a bit more detail as to what was wrong with the games though you gloss over or miss a few things (Hyper Beast being new to the home version of BR1, side stepping is a home version exclusive option for BR1, you can switch to hand drawn portraits for BR1, pretty sure you can combo into beast in BR1 just like in 2, tons of unlockables for BR2, BR2 being a high-res PS1 game, BR4's massive slowdown issues). That said, I could have never covered the complaints you have with the games as far too often people just say "I want Bloody Roar to come back but like...better! Like make it good so it can stand up to current games!" and my usual response is "...but Bloody Roar is better than current fighting games". I stand by that statement too, I'd rather play Bloody Roar 1 than any 3D fighter currently on the market. Erm...worth mentioning that I hate how Tekken controls. Left Punch/Right Punch does NOT make ANY sense to me and I've tried for years. I just find Tekken stiff, clunky, unnatural, and confusing. So taking Tekken out of the picture we have...what...DOA and Soul Calibur? DOA5 was good at least (fuck 6) but I'd still rather play any Bloody Roar game except 4. Bloody Roar is just faster, flashier, with a nice big movelist, and wonderful quarter circle inputs that makes it feel like a good blend of 2D and 3D fighters though leaning more towards 3D (while Rival Schools is quite similar in its blend but leans more towards 2D). Soul Calibur...just...makes me sad. That poor series. Call me when they stop cutting content and calling it a sequel. Really 3D fighters are in a depressingly bad place right now.
    As for Bloody Roar 4, I think what happened was Konami rushed it. It came out REALLY shortly after Konami bought Hudson so I suspect the game was most of the way through development and Konami just said "Shit it and get it out of here, we're done with this". I hear the Japanese version is slightly better. Glad to hear someone say something sorta nice about Nagi though. I like her and am really intrigued by her story and personality (she's weirdly nice for an angry looking leather clad biker chick and is her moaning in beast mode just the bad dub or does turning into a half finished duplicate of the Unborn cause pain to turn into pleasure for her?).

      We need an Evo Alternative where a Franchise like Bloody Roar can stand on it's own.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Před 3 lety +3

      The first Evo was in 2002, and just confirming what was said, it was basically an initiative to expand the Capcom fg legacy: they played St and 3s, that were old games, and Mvc2 and Cvs2 that were two new games for the time.
      Evo was created by hardcore capcucks important in the community, and it took a while for it to be willing and open to many 3d fg's - the guys that ruined Capcom's fg supremacy in the 90s. And even more to other 2d fg's - of course "direct enemies" of Capcom.
      Hence the low regard for Guilty Gear in the 00s, despite the fact it was a technical wonder superior to Capcom fg's and it was THE 2d highlight of that decade, and that must have filled the capcucks with jealously because Capcom's fg division completely collapsed at the same time. So they rather stuck to St and 3s, old games, than give wholehearted full support to GG, which was keeping the 2d fg's alive with a technical competence on par with Capcom. Their bias didnt let them promote GG like the star of the events - its deserving place since it was the hot new 2d fg of the time (and if we discard recycled work, Capcom never delivered a mostly fresh fg since the mid 90s).
      The jealous fanboys also refused to aknowledge the return of Snk in good form with Kof Xi in 2005. They turned their faces away from Snk in the 90s like they were guard dogs of Capcom, so im aware it would have been very difficult for them to aknowledge some relevance to "Capcom's old enemy" at that time.
      The proud capcucks stuck to promoting their old dead (commercially) 2d fg's as the Evo main titles rather than the 2d and 3d hot news of the time.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Před 3 lety

      Now in that whole situation, with a hardheaded Evo staff that refused to move on and accept that the 00s doesnt belong to Capcom, and preferred to continue worshipping old fg's rather than giving honest support to whatever new good 3d and 2d fg of the time, what the hell could you except of their possible judgement about freaking Bloody Roar?

    The 4th game may have “killed” the series, but there’s still hope in a next-gen title! Think about it: balanced mechanics that take from every game minus 4, an upgraded version of Extreme, and a story that goes back to the original sci-fi “X-Men’ tone of the first two titles that further explores the struggle in relations between Humans and Zoanthropes, and of course, more Zoanthropes. Just because a game didn’t make it into EVO doesn’t mean it doesn’t have “competitive play potential”.
    totu, whom you’ve unfairly criticized in this video for “squashing the pachinko rumor”? Yeah, he’s been uploading videos of BR3 arcade high level play for at least 5 years. So if Jerimiahisaiah, totu, TN Power & Krizyugofox Games have all been steadily uploading high level play of BR2, 3 & Extreme (GC) from the US, UK, Japan, Taiwan & Colombia respectively for numerous years now, how does this game not have the potential for a scene again?
    And all these references to the SRK threads are missing one thing: They were made before social media. Meaning that ONLY English-speaking FGC purists diligently frequented them. And as established, those threads are largely misinformed when it came to Bloody Roar's "balance issues".
    I appreciate the effort you put into making this, and I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you about the series’ presentation issues. But claiming this series doesn’t have any nostalgic backbone from which it can be properly revitalized is simply untrue. I should know. I’m from Saudi FRIGGIN Arabia 🤣

      I think you probably shouldn't take the 'didn't make it to Evo' thing seriously. It's abundantly clear that he's being facetious every time he says it. He didn't exactly take a shit on the game; balance issues were the norm in 90's fighting games. Bloody Roar certainly had it's admirers, myself included, but it remains very niche to this day.

    • @gamingntea

      @@keystonelyte I must establish that I agree with his criticisms of the series' presentation and I am seriously one of the most outspoken critics of BRtrashass4 you will EVER meet in life LOL!
      That said, my issue doesn't lie with KBash's opinions on Bloody Roar. It lies with the LONG-spread inaccuracies that this series 'wouldn't hack it as a competitive game', because that, my friend, is simply not true. And the REASON I insist on dispelling such inaccuracies is that I've seen too many people spend years of their lives dedicating themselves to proving that the vast majority of the Bloody Roar games are, in fact, prime subjects for high level play.
      The EVO thing just set me off. Oh, and dissing totu was a low blow.
      Finally, if KBash KNEW that Jerimiahisaiah was "the current champion of Bloody Roar content on CZcams" yet only mentioned him in the description, this acknowledgement of his HAD to have been an afterthought.

    • @keystonelyte
      @keystonelyte Před 3 lety +1

      @@gamingntea I don't disagree with the sentiment that it is competitively viable. The game that is largely considered to be one of the best competitive fighting games, SF3: Third Strike, is wildly imbalanced, with the parry mechanic completely ruining balancing further.
      The fact of the matter is that the best competitive fighting games have one thing in common; they are largely both fun as hell to play AND watch. My favorite fighting game to date is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future, and despite being a 20 y/o fighting game, it had a massive community compared to what you'd think, and is actively competitive to this day on Fightcade and Red GGPO.
      It's fun to play and watch, its innovative as all hell with its mechanics, its animations are slick, and the music is awesome. It's also wildly imbalanced and 2 characters are straight up banned on the existing competitive scene. I'd argue that the imbalance makes the games inherently more interesting.

That part has always been hard to sell to potential fellow FGC enthusiasts, and yet Bloody Roar has always done that with ease! Bloody Roar is such a sad tale when it comes to 3D Fighting games. It had a pretty cool concept, some interesting characters, and while the gameplay was not really as smooth as Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive, it still was a neat series that was brimming with potential. My first entry into the series was with Primal Fury on the GameCube. I remember seeing a review of the game on G4's X-Play way back in the day, had to be around 2002-2003 and I remember telling my brother about it as we were both into 3D fighters and we ended upboth saving money to get. We get it and while we did acknowledge that it wasn't as fluid as Tekken 5 or Soul Calibur 2, we still really liked it a lot. We would spend so much time playing it and we considered ourselves fans at that point, enough to get Bloody Roar 4 the day it came out. At the time, we didn't really notice anything too wrong with it at first until we noticed just how broken the gameplay was from matches either taking longer than you'd think they should or over in an instant. And then of course the awful voice acting (So bad it's hilarious). Yeah we had really mixed feelings about BR4 and we came to the conclusion that where we though that Primal Fury was better.
    I eventually did get around to playing the first 3 BR games and I had fun with all of them, even BR1 despite the nightmare fuel that was the character designs lol. The music was awesome in all the games but it was a given since I like Rock so eh lol. And yeah, I can agree with all you said about BR3, it was where the game truly was starting to get somewhat of a footing of what it wanted to be. Like I admitted before in your Soul Calibur videos, I was never really a competitve or heavily technical player, I don't know all the fancy fighting game terms outside of the basics and it just comes down to whether I enjoy playing the game or not and Bloody Roar just happened to be one of those games.
    It's really depressing where Bloody Roar has ended up because while it did have a very rough to experimental type of run, it would've been so cool to see carry on into the PS3/360 era. I mean could you imagine how cool a next gen Bloody Roar game would've looked graphically? And plus, I'm more than sure they would've found a way to make the gameplay work and make up for the "meh" of BR4. And considering that Hudson Soft went defunct in 2011, it seems that Bloody Roar may stay in the ground for the rest of time. I still remember when there was rumors that Bloody Roar 5 was in the making only for it to be fake lol. I'd like think that maybe we'll see Bloody Roar come back but with Konami's track record with how they've been handling their games (or lack thereof with those damn Pachinko machines), yeah the BR series is pretty much doomed but hey, miracles can happen sometimes right? lol Anyway awesome review, it's nice to see more people talking about these games~

Years later I was in a boarding school, and a friend of mine reminded me of BR 2 as she played the japanese version on a PSX as a kid. Eventually, on our free time during wednesday afternoons, we would load it on an emulator on my laptop and play for hours. Checking out competitive matches online and skimming some forums can clue you in to a meta, but when it's an entry that had little competitive interest in the first place it's hard to figure out what the legitimately good options are and what is just white noise spouted by low tier enthusiasts and folks whining about the flavor of the month "broken character" who never ended up being that dominant in the long run.

    You know, with the success of the ... furry uprising... I think its a great moment for Bloody Roar to come back. I was actually thinking about it recently while watching BNA.

      Hell yeah, electric arena was one I actually enjoyed because I really loved the anime. Generally hate 2d fighters.

    This came up right when my gf and I had been talking about these, you have a weird knack for that lol
    You also took the words out of my mouth on the series, especially whatever the hell the health/beast mode bar shit was in 4

    Oh man this brings back memories of my older brother, cousin, and I playing this in Philippines. We lied to my parents about buying snacks to play Bloody Roar and Teken in the arcades.

    Oh man, I remember playing BR2 and Primal Fury. So sad to know that the series never took off. It was a genuinely fun game.
