    You can tell by watching her Monsty had complete and utter control of her voice. She didn't strain, she didn't need a deep breath and Freddie, well Freddie had that legendary 4 octave range on full display.
    two masters of their craft and it is just amazing to hear.

    Freddie always loved opera and when Monserrat was approached to colab on this she was at first unsure. She was thee great soprano of the world when this was recorded. She met with Fred and by the end of the meeting, she was sold. The result is stunning. Opera fans and rock fans alike are touched by it. The icing on the cake was that it was used as the them to the Barcelona Olympics!

    Montserrat Caballe' inspired Freddie Mercury to write the song Bohemian Rhapsody.

  • @neilburns8869
    @neilburns8869 Před rokem +12

    Freddie Mercury was approached by the IOC (international Olympic Committee) to write a song for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
    Anyone who has watched the movie Bohemian Rhapsody will know that Freddie always had a passion for Opera music. Monserrat Caballe was one of his favourites and he was actually quite nervous about performing with her.
    But I think that we can all agree that he managed to deliver one of his most iconic songs and performances that just serve as a reminder to what a great music legend he actually is.

      Sorry to have to correct you here, but in fact this immortal and triumphant Duet, was composed by Freddie and his Musical Maestro Mike Moran as a tribute to his new but already dear friend Montserrat Caballe, in 1987, long before the ultimately successful bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics was even thought of.. The approach by the Barcelona Olympic bid committee, only came some months later. Both artists enthusiastically agreed to allow their duet to be used. During the Opening Ceremony of the games in 1992 a recording of the Anthem was played, Freddie having sadly died 7 months previously. The Duet became the cities official anthem for the Games...

The back story on how the rock and roll god and the opera diva met, how this song came to be, and how they decided to do an entire album of songs is wonderful. Aree 100% with your reaction... The 1988 performace of the same piece by them at the "La Nit" Centro de Cultura in Barcelona, is even more amazing. Truly spectacular setting and effects, yet complements completely and in no way overshadows this monumental , immortal anthem, by two musical giants from totally different worlds. True symbiosity from acclaimed performers each resepcting and admiring the others' talents perfectly complementing, not competeing with each other. Theirs was a true and lasting deep friendship.
    The piece was of course selected to be the centerpiece of the city of Barcelona's successful bid to host the 1992 Summer Olympics. Many still feel that the opening ceremony was the best ever.. It was hoped that the duo might perform it at the ceremooy but the fates decreed otherwise. Montserrat Caballe never performed the duet again, preferring to keep it as lasting tribute to her cherished friend and collaborator. She sadly passed away in 2018..

    I think she is controlling her power and talking down her vibrato. It matches beautifully.

    The whole album is wonderful and I don't even like Opera, "How can can I go on", "The Golden boy" are stand outs but any song is a must.

    John did you know this performance was mimed?
    The AIDS was starting to show itself and Freddie didn't know if he'd be strong enough to do the theatricals and sing at the same time.
    Just before this performance it was decided he would just do the theatricals, and put all of his energy into that, it really worked well as you can see and the audience hadn't a clue that they were not singing.
    His final wish was to sing with Montserrat and it was granted, they really had a wonderful relationship and each admired the other, Freddie told Montserrat that he was dying and what from, it didn't bother her one bit.
    2 wonderful human beings ❤
