This is a video of me taking a catapult shot on Christmas Day in a Navy C-2 Greyhound. It was filmed as we flew off from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier a few years back. With a wingspan of 81', the C-2 ties with the E-2 Hawkeye as the biggest aircraft to currently fly on and off of U.S Navy aircraft carriers.
So the big question is, WHY am I saluting with my left hand? LEAVE YOUR ANSWER IN THE COMMENTS BELOW :)

In all seriousness, these two guys are one of the many unsung heroes of the Navy. From parts, to people, to Christmas mail, nothing gets there without the COD.
@4th Musketeer On board a carrier the COD is essential to resupply People parts some perishable foods.
However The CH 46s did all the vertreps to the carrier and all of the other ships including mail perishable food passengers Etc.

I worked on Hawkeyes for 20 years. "Pilots talking about pilot stuff" is usually a pretty short conversation. Most of the talk was about what we're eating for dinner after the flight.
eating? drinking comes first!

Every pilot from now one should have a “stache” rating to help signify his flight qualifications!!
That would be cool, but it's more of a deployment thing. Our Khakis at 123 had some bad ass staches on the last deployment!
@@davelewis2319 what he said👆🏼
In the training squadrons the pilots grow staches for Carrier Qualifications.
Yep. My dad was a military pilot for 20 years. Has a bad ass stache. Mine sucks

I was a Marine and made great friends with several sailors. One thing they all had in common was they could tell stories forever. Literally there is not enough time in the universe they couldn’t fill with stories.
You were a Marine ??? .... Correction ;

I have a small poster showing an old, grizzled sailor and a very young sailor. The caption reads, "Son, if you don't do stupid shit when you're young, you'll never have good sea stories to tell when you're old."
Dunno why, but I'm oddly fascinated by the fact that this multi-ton airplane gets launched in seconds, and this guy doesn't even blink... That's nuts.

They spoke below about Christmas mail getting through! This was huge to my brother when he newly enlisted in the Navy, decades ago now. My mom and I made him dozens and dozens of homemade cookies and mailed them. We weren’t sure they’d make it, but they did! He asked for more very soon after too. My momma replied in a letter, you shouldn’t be eating all those cookies out there! He said he had only eaten a couple.. they were currency! He used them as bartering tools, favors! Lol. He was on the Nimitz, Yosemite, and I can’t recall all of them. He passed young in his 50’s, doing what he loved best… going fast! Thank you for this perspective and reminder of those times. He retired from the Navy.. dad retired from the Army. I have always appreciated the special breed of sacrificing humans. Where would we be without you… Thank you. ❤
The salute in this case is part of "good to go" to the Cat Officer and must be clearly seen. Also allows hands on throttles.
Nailed it. Can’t take those hands off the throttles while in tension on the cat…
@@flyrobroy When do you transition to V-22 or variants?
I got into a "heated" discussion about that with a gentleman. The usual "you don't salute with your left hand" BS.
I finally asked, "how long did you serve on the flight deck?" His answer "never but...." at that point, I had already turned and walked away
@Just a Pilot A "left-hand" salute is appropriate when the right hand is busy.

September-May. Air Force and Navy pilots in Iraq as well. Iraq 05-06 February-August. If you flew over these areas and provided air support. Thank you for keeping me and my team safe. We were able to get back home.
Thank you all for being on the ground over there keeping the rest of us safe over here!
What always amazes me is how much slower a cat launch seems like from the inside of an aircraft compared to outside it. On the deck, you blink and it's gone. Inside the cockpit it seems like it takes a solid minute. I know it doesn't of course, but it seems that way.
I love how he quoted
"With great moustache comes great responsibility" from the other video.
Im growing mine out to improve my flying!
Hell yea.
Me before the 'stache was a nobody.
After I grew it out, I was given a license by the FAA to fly helicopters, and another by the NRC to operate commercial nuclear reactors.

This is the same pilot that didn’t blink landing on the aircraft carrier.
Now he is leaving
The "Rob Roy" on the back of his helmet might be a giveaway........
Well if you blink, you've lost all chance to reacting to an emergency.
@Matt
And still hasn’t combed his mustache
No need to blink when your landing in fair weather, calm seas, and plenty of sunshine. Now, let's see trap footage during heavy seas, gail force winds, sheets of rain, at 0300!!!
Aw, man! That 3-4 seconds of catapult must just rock your world! My favorite part of any flight is the take-off. Love being thrown back in my seat. Bet it's triple the fun with this setup!!! Salute to all who serve!!!
At 2:11 you can see a flight deck crewman at left present the Weight Board to the pilots. The copilot points it out to the pilot who acknowledges with a thumbs up that the posted launch weight is correct. Every aircraft is launched according to its gross weight + aircraft type + wind over the deck. On a windy day a lightly-loaded C-2 with those huge wings will get a pretty soft launch. The hardest shots I had in the Phantom back in the day were on dead-calm days where the ship was making all the wind and the F-4 had a full load of Mk-82 bombs.
@@bigredracingdog466 I had a cat shot once while the ship was at anchor, why I have no idea. It was the hardest one I had in my 20 years flying. I thought I was going to go thru the back of the ejection seat.

I was on the USS Midway (CV-41) during Operation Desert Shield and Storm. I was a QM on the bridge so I got to see all flight ops live. Grew up and still live in the "Cradle of Naval Aviation" in Pcola. My dad flew the Helo's and Phantoms way back in the day. This video brings back a lot of good memories for me. Finally my time has come...after 60 years of holding the fort.
Had to crank up the steam to get that mustache off the deck.
thats the reason hes not in the smaller planes
Flight deck to Engineering: we need more steam!
Engineering: Reactor at 120%!
All the cargo is lined up behind the copilot to balance out the 'stache.
It makes me sad that I’ll never have a flight itinerary with the phrase “catapult shot” on it.
“So she asked me about how big my prop was, and I said- don’t worry about that baby, I can thrust forward and reverse....”
Post take off checklist: Engines running. Check. No water in cockpit. Check.
Shorts? Relatively clean.

WE OK Our tail is dry.
I worked nights in AIMD, and the sound of morning flight ops was always my lullaby. I can still remember the sound of a JBD being raised and lowered, as well as the sound of the shuttle when it comes back after the launch. To this day I can't sleep unless there is some kind of background noise.
Yup, my berthing was right below and between the main Cats. You could tell what plane was launching when they went to military power. The first time I was in berthing and heard the Cat shuttle being pulled back and then released we were in dry dock. My first time on ship. I thought something major had broken and we should be getting out of those spaces! I was such a newbie!!

Loved to see the Cod coming, that meant we were getting mail! Back before you could Skype or email from the ship, snail mail from loved ones was what kept you going. Christmas Cheer is a top priority for all Branches.
I had just gotten off duty after a Graves shift covering Christmas Eve / Christmas Morning at Camp Hof, FRG. All night long we had been given the usual spoof Santa sighting reports from our FLIR aircraft patrolling the East/West German border and GSR guys. I finally got off shift and headed to the mess hall...admittedly tired and a little bummed because I couldn't be with my family on Christmas.
