My Bolens by MTD w/15.5 Briggs & Stratton needs its rebuild, I'm bringing it to you guys. I have rear end that slips in the lower (1-3) speed selector. Im not sure if its just the belt or if the driveline needs to be replaced or rebuilt. My dad gave me this tractor after he did all kinds of work to the deck. New blades, belts, pulleys, and I'll never het rid of it. My dad died 10 days after he gave it to me. So you guys are gonna be the ones to make her like new again. Your Channel is great and i love how you guys know what your doing. I'm looking forward to the day I bring it up there. Ill be driving up from Florida. Later Guys.

Some people complain about the length of the video, because they think they can gain all the knowledge they need in 5 minutes. I appreciate all time you invest in making the video's. The uploads take a lot of time so I wait on Sundays for what ever time they get posted. Thanks Taryl and the crew of lawnmower monsters.

I agree. It's particularly helpful to watch an experienced mechanic work through unforeseen problems that often bedevil the amateur, a rusted bolt here, a seized PTO there.

I've been watching this particular video since Sunday. I've broken it up into about 4 parts. It doesn't matter to me if I learn anything new or not, odds are I'll never work on a Kawasaki mower engine. These videos have a calming, almost therapeutic, effect on me and I enjoy every minute.

Those people really p**s me off. No one is strapping you down and making you watch it all. Watch a bit and come back or skip forward. Even those with genuine ADHD can work around it but there can be a lot of info to get out and it's important that Taryl tells us ALL we need to know. The sketches and comedy is great too. Moaning about the length of the video, shut up and get out of 'ere.!!! Knuckleheads...

Some camshaft lobes have a little extra 'hump' on them (exhaust lobe) that relieves compression at partial piston compression stroke, for ease in starting, and NO valve lash adjustment should be made at that point. BUT if engine is put at TDC comp stroke (both valves closed) you needn't worry about that comp. release feature on some engines. I'm sure Taryl knows this, as he is very smart!

    • @brandonkick
      @brandonkick Před 4 lety

IMO comes down to a few things... how good are you at this sorta thing? Do you have the tools, space, and time to do the job? Do you like or want to do the job? Whats your time worth to you?
If your earning 50+ an hour doing something else, I'd rather spend the time doing something I'm good at as opposed to something I like to do but am not good at.....
So if it takes a guy who's done this before a good 5 or 6 hours.... it might take me 15+ hours to get it all done. If I can earn anywhere close to what the labor rate is I'm going to be paying, I'd rather just pay the labor rate and earn the money to pay for it.
Bonus points if you get any kind of warranty on the work / parts when you get the service done. I don't mind tinkering with small engines, but it comes down to a time value proposition and if your set up to do the work / able to do the work / and are interested to do the work.
This one's probably out of my league just because I don't have anyone to help me lift that engine out. Pay John Deere to do it and then go earn some money mowing lawns with your newly rebuilt baby!

Thanks for the video, your time & effort to share with us !
The company who picks up your used oil & oil filters probably also has a anti-freeze & absorbent recycling program or knows who does locally. I worked for one that did.
I believe I would have tried to collect most of that anti-freeze neatly, as opposed to getting it mixed in with the used oil & all over the floor.
The reason for numbering or marking internal engine parts is because they are worn to their respective mating surfaces. Probably not so critical on a mower engine.
Other than that, a good tutorial on how to replace the cam on a cow a sockie engine on a JD mower.

Cam gear failure is unheard of on the 15 and 17hp liquid Kawasaki’s in the 1990’s lx178 and 188 series. Seems to be more prone to the bigger engines for some reason. They make a steel gear for them as a replacement.

This reminds me of watching," Untold Stories of the E.R." Sometimes when we get the bill our frustration will be so high that we sometimes forget the hard work, and years of study guys like this put in so as to gain the knowledge, and skill level required in their professions. It's not very often that guys like this get to actually relax and let their hair down, they have to keep their mind engaged on the current challenge . The risk is just too great for them to ever laugh and interact with their peers. Their calling is higher than just a paycheck.
I wish they had professionals like this working in the Veterans Administration Hospitals.

    (Andy)
This is the reason why I advised my friends to buy the 325 J.D.,the 325 was a single cylinder 17hp.air cooled Kawasaki engine, but it has the metal cam ⚙⬅gear in it and will outlast the FD-590V Liquid Cooled P.O.S.(Piece/Of/STUFF HAHA!!)in this video.(no chance of issues with coolant leaking, having to be messin'with anti-freeze etc.)
Now,to the best of my knowledge, according to Kawasaki, the FD-590V and the FD-731V are NO LONGER being mfg.,if you look at the newest version of this tractor,it uses the AIR-COOLED engine model FS-730 E.F.I.(Electronic Fuel Injected)engine, this engine is in the latest updated mid-sized John Deere model X-590,which came out in late 2016,the model just before this one was the X-584 and it has the Kawasaki FS-730V CARBORATED engine in it and the X-584 came out in early 2016.
BOTH of these engines are AIR-COOLED and to the best of my knowledge, also have METAL CAM GEARS in them.⚙⬅(metal cam gear in both engines)

Love the humor mixed with real world fixes you do. I own two 18 hp 345's....biggest issues have been float bowl getting filled up with crap from worn fuel pump or the grommet back at fuel tank, Until now.... one of them seems to have gotten H2O in fuel ... and the Water is hard to ignite. Of course flushed all that and have nice ethanol free fuel.... Still not starting . Fired a few times off of starting fluid.... but not enough to keep it running.... Going to be taking carb off again... even bought cheap China one to see if that would help.... but It also has a weak spark... so looking at that as well. We get experience with over engineered BMW motors and Figure them out... I guess I am glad the Kawasaki does not require a scan tool!
ANY WAY. I am WONDERING WHY WATER PUMPS ARE NOT REPLACED WHEN YOU AND HUNDREDS OF OTHERS TAKE THE MOTORS OFF OF THESE 345s?? both of mine have 1200 and 1400 hours.. Love the power steering... I have an old 160 and its back up when the 345's want lovin".( throwing a tantrum and a BELT! ) The old160 had an issue with valve clearances a few years ago..reallly hard to start...valve clearance issue..
Now that I think about it, I have had to replace a push rod or two on one of these 345's... I guess I should remove them them and see if they are straight and true..
Seriously THANK YOU for the help and humor. My 9 year old grand child cracks up with your shows!

345 is actually a very good machine, very stout transmission on it.
Engine looked a lot better after you cleaned it up, thanks for dinner.

Yup it's a fine machine - engine is like in the Space Shuttle. Plastic gears are less weight.

Agreed. I own 2 of them. I’ve paid way under they are valued at. And have added my own made custom adapters for more capabilities in attachments.
