This week David is joined by The Athletic's Italian expert James Horncastle to detail why they collapsed so dramatically a decade ago and how - through smarter approaches - they're back where they belong...

Tell us who your most iconic AC Milan player of all time is 👇
Maldini & an honourable mention of Kaka in his prime
Inzaghi
Top 5 most Iconic:
- Maldini / Baresi: "The Captains"

- Gattuso / Seedorf / Inzaghi: "The last Golden Age"
- Kaka / Shevchenko / Thiago Silva: "Iconic gems"
Too many options!!!
Gullit, Rijkaard, Van Basten!!! But has to be Paolo Maldini! Or is it Franco Baresi?!
Paola Maldini
As a Milan fan, when we got knocked out by Atletico in 2014, I never thought we had to wait 7 years to see another Champions League night. It's such a blessing to see ourselves back in the magical nights of Champions League, whatever the end outcome may be 🔴⚫🔴⚫🔴⚫🔴⚫🔴⚫🔴
good to see you guys back
forza milan
Love your content dude
I'd love to see leeds back too top club
I don’t even know any of their players except Zlatan
What happened to AC Milan is simply a symptom of the economic challenges faced by Italian football in general.
Serie A is as entertaining as a league it's been in years. The title race is wide open this season with anyone of seven team's being potential winners and The Italian national team are probably the best national team in the world this is a great time for Italian football.
It’s the second best league in Europe.
I think the media coverage is a lot less compared to the EPL hence the perception of it as not as interesting
Milan's recruitment is so good. They focus on young players with potential. Atm those players are Hernandez, Tonali, Bennacer, Diaz etc but they have experienced players like Ibrahimovic and Kjaer as well who have superb leadership skills.
I'm a Liverpool fan its good to see Milan back in the champions league a traditional big club and all the best except against Liverpool
Can't believe Milan havnt been in Europe in 7 years. Used to remember them winning everything. Put of all the big clubs in Europe they have fallen the worst
Last few years of berlusconi a lot of wasted money. But bear in mind that when Bournemouth got to the PL they got £100million just in tv money.
Always had a special place in my heart for milan. Can't wait until round 3 after the 2005 and 2007 UCL finals.
@@himum3429 perhaps we meet in a final in a couole of years, for now the group stage is rather uncomfy, but still ennoyable games. Best of luck and always admiring Liverpool's spirit. I am a Milan fan.
So happy there’s finally coverage on Milan after a era of great change and the ucl return
These videos on teams within the other European leagues, with their respective Athletic experts, are always my favourites and are always excellent
I agree. Would be great to get even more coverage on European leagues on Athletic app; Premier League already well saturated with quality coverage in the English language media. Big ups to Horncastle too, enjoy his perspectives 👍
Love Milan, I remember watching the serie A highlights every weekend as a kid in the 90s and being enamoured by Maldini, Seedorf, Beirhoff and Kluivert.
Seedorf didn't move to Milan till 2002! But, I know what you mean.
"For me, a challenge is going to a struggling team and taking it far."
-Zlatan Ibrahimovic
And when exactly, in his prime, did he do that?
_(His first transfer to Milan wasn't really voluntarily)_
@@yannick245 Read his book. Watch the interviews.
His first transfer to Milan was because Galliani and Ronaldinho came to request him to come to Milan.
@@yannick245 He did with Inter
@@machiavelliserbe9826 Inter was designated to be the champions, after Juve was relegated to Serie B and Milan got a point deduction, because of the s.c. _"Calciopoli"_ in 2006.
Without the Calciopoli, Ibrahimović wouldn't even have transferred to Inter in the first place. They won the Champions League the first season Zlatan left. The same thing at Barcelona. The year Zlatan went back to Italy, Barca won the Champions League.
I don't want to downplay Zlatan's extraordinary football career but he didn't took every team he played for further.
Even also couldn't share the _"spotlight"._
That might be the reason he never won the Champions League. He always had to be the star.
The teams he won the national titles with, probably would've so without him.
At LA or United he didn't managed to take the team further. Galaxy was actually more successful without him...
He also isn't the only Serie A player that is still successful at a high age. Luca Toni was the Serie A topscorer at 38 years of age. Even with a team like Hellas Verona. He didn't have a top team to support him back then.
Still, I want to make clear that I admire Zlatan Ibrahimović and everything he did for football!
The real question is, when exactly was Zlatans prime?
I wish our league somehow had the money that the Prem has. Would like to see Serie A do a better job at marketing the league, and hopefully new stadiums to many of these teams.
Serie A is still stuck in the 90s, except Juventus none of the Italian clubs have any major Social media presence. The stadiums infrastructure are way too old, its feels like visiting Chernobyl.
Serie A clubs are like Italian economy doesn't want to adapt to the changing times.
Spot on what James said, well done. Most important now for Milan is that they keep up the good work for the next years.
Management and Maldini needs to make sure that the team must be among the top 4 in Serie A (Play CL football)
This year Milan could possible win the Scudetto and it will be a battle till the very end.
Grazie a tutti e FORZA MILAN per sempre!
The day we sold Ibra and Thiago Silva at the same season, i knew we'd struggle. But little did i know that it would take us years to rise again just to qualify for a UCL spot.
I'm expecting a similar video on Arsenal 5 years from now.
@@Auriflamme Someone didnt listen to the video, criticised for signing young players and long term manager etc
Definitely!
A truly special club, by far my favourite Italian side.
Why is Ron Jeremy talking about AC Milan?
I have been a subscriber but I always watch certain videos, but as far as an interview goes, I want to say thank you for a very well mannered beautifully articulated interview.
The problem is while in Italy as milan fan I’m
Happy to say milan is looking in to the future with great promise the league serie a and some of the big clubs aren’t. Like juve as a milan fan I’m happy and worried at the same time they might have an even worse fall then the one we had.. juve has debt that is 5 times worse than what ours was (200 mil) and they are struggling and losing a lot of money.. I’m happy inters owner is literally failing not Inter the owner.. and the league isn’t doing anything at the moment they aren’t helping clubs at all and they aren’t doing anything really for the future and this is a great league but clubs like milan have to do it on are own and we did even though we have a long way to go we’re the best teams financially we’re the most sustainable and Napoli and Roma are also is doing an amazing job, but the leagues management is absolutely terrible.. the tv rights to DAZN is an embarrassing decision not a lot of money coming from them to club even though we get a lot of publicity from them it’s not enough. The stadium were building a new one but because of a zoning issue we have to get rid of San siro to do it.. witch makes no sense… we’d get double the money in the long run if we don’t have to share the stadium so I hope we change MilanO’s president soon because he’s also doing a terrible job with the stadium.. because supposedly we have (ac and inter) a new stadium coming. Gazidis has done a great job with sponsors too. So that’s good but a big team like Milan definitely needs to fill the income financial gap we have with clubs like real and Man U who make a shit load of money..
But at the same time our debt is probably the lowest in the champions league top 20 so they gotta watch out too because we’re doing a much better job than clubs like Barca and juve.. also I think if I understood correctly oil clubs like psg and man city I know they’re income “matches the ffp” in this parallel universe but isn’t it catastrophic if they don’t win the UCL? especially psg who’s not even getting good results on the field in comparison to what they spend… so also champions league needs to be regulated a bit cause at the moment it seems a bit unfair that clubs like psg get a free pass in ffp and all that shit.. it’s also unfair that Ac and Roma get fined for a 200 mil debt totally fair but clubs like juve and Barca keep spending a lot and they have 2 billion combined in debt… maybe they should rethink it cause that’s unfair and it’s also not benificial for them..
at the moment financially speaking ac Milan and Roma are working the best even though they’re revenue isn’t that high yet with the way are balance is it’s only gonna get higher, keep in mind we’re still recovering from a pandemic.. and Napoli is also doing fine but financially speaking inter were working well but there owner’s colossal company might fail and juve are on the brink of failure on the pitch and out of it.. even though they still have the highest revenue in Italy otherwise they’re doing terrible in everything else.
Good video. Bayern got me into the sport, and is still my favorite club. But I fell in love with Napoli many years back, and am enjoying the resurgence of Serie A. I wish the Bundesliga would do the same.

Amazing analysis guys! Very thorough!!! Forza Milan!
What a piece this was!!! ❤
Superb stuff david 👏👏👏👏👍cheers
Zlatan and Kjaer are basically captains without the armband.
awesome vid!
Great interview david
very well done guys!
Ron Jeremy commenting on AC Milan.......Interesting.
What a fantastic video 👌
The traditions of ac milan are create something new. Youd seen sachii, capello, anceloti, the dutch trio, maldini, deep lying playmaker, the xmas tree formation, sheva, young pato and his old role models around him, young maldini grew with role models watched him, young donaruma who unfortunately go.. and many others the tradition on this club. We are family we are ac milan
Orny & Horncastle! dripping!!
Love James' work
On an unrelated matter, it was always amazing how their players were quite muscular and recovered very quickly in training. I wonder why?
I’m sure Pep could help. I always thought drolone was a funny name for his nan.
Good watch I enjoyed that, Gullit is the iconic player for me.
loved this!
In my humble opinion, I would regard AC Milan's 2 most iconic players are Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi
Milan has an amazing squad and, as an Inter fan, I actually admire the way they're being managed. Great team, but Pioli is not the one to bring you titles. I think what Pioli is to Milan is what Spalletti was to Inter. Not world-class, but a good coach nonetheless who can bring order and provide a stepping stone for the next coach who will win them the scudetto.
Well, this comment didn't age well...
@@georgelazenby3607 i stand corrected
@@AlexLeafy That's a fine response. May the best team from the city of Milan prevail next year. Keep the Scudetto away from Turin for another year.
Excellant episode
Milan's in a tough group. Hope they do well. 🙏
Loved this vid, you guys are the most informed podcast as if you're milan fans lol
Lets admit we all know ivan gazidas because of van persie interview
It would be nice to see the return of the 90's Serie A.
That won’t happen because the sport is now about money, the game has modernized it, and these clubs are still playing in old stadiums that are not pleasing on the eye anymore.

I didn't know Ron Jeremy was a Milan fan
Forzia Milan i never gave up on milan i believe milan we gona come back .just gud board good president gud coach then gud results shows up .❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️
Barcelona is going in the complete opposite direction of Milan's rebuilding route. They're trying to spend their way back into glory even if it means mortgaging their future. I have my own idea but it'll be interesting to see how Barcelona will sustain in the long run.
About to be in the semifinal in the champions league this year.... damn

We are Immortal! 😂❤️🖤
As a Milan fan, i knew we would wait 2 or 3 years to return to UcL, but it took too long for Berlusconi to get rid of debt and or sell the team to a good managing owner. Selling to the chinese buyers extended the disgrace and hopefull under the Elliot Group we will at least revamp the value of the team to compete in Europe again. Good video. Thanks
Juve fan here - Any update on a new stadium for Milan? Love seeing the league become more competitive
Inter’s financial issues ruined every plan of a stadium that was supposed to be combined.
Milan are now looking at other options such as building a stadium just for themselves, but Milan (the city) is an extremely difficult place to build new facilities in
Postponed it will not be resumed until inter ownership position were clear.. suning the holding company that own majority of inter sell 30% of it shares to oaktree (other hedge fund groups) few months ago i think
@@EdwardElfigo very unfortunate, if possible i would rather have our own stadium.
Donnarumma is that you!
Give it a few years, there will be a 'rise and fall' of Arsenal football club. Other than AC Milan, I can only think of Deportivo and Lazio that have dropped off further than Arsenal in the last 20 years...
I was expecting more
like what?
The changing logo on the left is so bothersome I couldn't watch this video. Keep it still or move it elsewhere.
Wow, Calm down lad.

Roma? if they are lucky they will fight for Europa League, maybe....
Is Horncastle stockpiling all of the hair that should be at the front of his head in those long locks?
Love this
When will Elliot Management sell off the club? Their desire to make money on the club is what's driving this sustainability charge and it's wholly contingent on that ownership.
Man utd board should learn their scouting system
United have improved their recruitment bro after Ole's appointment
James looking like Washed up version of Ron Jeremy 😛😛😁😁🤣🤣
Forza Milan
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is very much responsible for Milan's rebirth. Without him it would have surely taken many more years.
As a Milan fan it's just a shame that this transfer strategy slipped a little in the summer window. Giroud, Florenzi, Bakayoko, Messias aren't exactly as exciting and full of potential as Bennacer, Tonali, Leao, Theo etc. I feel a bit like Moncada's good work went to waste.
Those 4 players were brought in as bench option, to have a larger squad..
Injuries is the main reason Milan didn’t win the scudetto last year
These are all good, especially in terms of cost. Actually Milan transfered Tomori and Tonali this year + Maginan, money spent on these guys.
Beside giroud other name were brought for squad depth
Forza lotta vincerai non ti lasceremo mai ale ale ale milan ale ………..

I really did not expect James Horncastle to be a neck beard.
Kinda looks like he’s wearing one of those plastic sheets they put over you at the barbershop.
Lot of this sounds like arsenal
As someone who absolutely loves loves Italian football I can’t get my head around who you would buy Newcastle United and not a club like this 🤪🤪 I’m obviously biased, but I can’t get my fat head around that madness. But I suppose if you treat women like dirt and run a country like a mediaeval state I suppose you don’t think straight.

How is the ESL an attempt to modernise? Lol
Can Arsenal do something similar?
NO
Why?
Zlatan rejected Assnal as a 17 year old
Zlatan joined Milan and wants to end his career as a Milan legend.
That's why.
Interpretation: Milan can attract greats even in the worst of times. Assnal is a stepping stone club even in the best of times.
@@jatin2616 Lmao, what a reduction, it's about wages and league finishes, Arsenal's problem has been that they've been declining ever since KSE took over, players recognise that not just by the quality of players on the team but their inability to meet the wage demands of their good players throughout the years, even losing them to their direct PL rivals! But look at what happens to even Barcelona when they try to keep up with the wage bubble without Qatari/Oil backing? They're almost bankrupted. AC Milan just like Arsenal couldn't keep up, and they're both trying to figure out how they can still be competitive.
Yes they should do it, arsenal are in better condition financially than milan but unluckily they did not have a better scout and football director if i were kroenke i would hire experienced professionals in football like luciano moggi, luis ocampos, igli tare etc
Milan rebirth were started at 2019 when the new management under elliott appointed the right people for their position like scaroni maldini moncada gazidis massara
Inter will go further
Inter Milan would likely progress further than the other Italian teams in the UCL
I really don't see it. Milan however if they past this group could go really far
Inter flatter to deceive in Europe
I still think Juventus will go further any Milan team and Atalanta, simply because Allegri has more experience in the Champions league than any other coach in serie A(apart from Mourinho)
Will they? They cannot win it. No Italian team can win it right now
@@Agee1 Juventus is lucky if they qualify as 2nd in the groups, then they will disappear in next round.... Juventus is so much weaker and Allegri didn't improve himself, he needs a mental evolution.
