I still have the two books detailing each ship class. The only thing I wish is that the ships had more variability, instead of each class being defined only by its loadout.
Disagrees with Promethium Flamethrower. God tier ships and Ships in general aren't OP and are so fucking slow its not even funny, they don't stand no chance against anything.
The main difference between cruiser and battlecruisers is that the second one mounts two dorsal lance turrets, and generally has more powerful shielding. The heavy cruiser is an equivalent to the battlecruiser, altough the term seems to be more common with older ships (which means its more common for chaos ships) Theres also a smaller ship class below the escort, the system monitor. These ships arent capable of FTl through the warp, but in exchange pack a lot more punch than its interstellar equivalents in size, and are used as system defense navies.
Actually, that is weak compared to the ships the IRON MEN used Their ships can destroy entire stars like the Necrons! (Unlike the sanely Necrons, the Iron Men blow up stars like Christmas!)
Little mistake about gloriana class. There were only 20 constructed, most ale lost now. On the Imperium side only macragge honour remains. And they were for primarchs, not for the navy.
The Eternal Crusader is a Gloriana class Battleship. Currently belongs to the Black Templars. Was being refitted during the war of the beast and was not combat ready and would not be for the next 20 years. The Chronicle of Ashes renamed the Lex Talonis is a Gloriana class Battleship. Taken from the Word Bearers and given to an Ultramarines successor chapter by the Inquisition after its reclamation by the Ultramarines.
@HellElvis their are two more Gloriana class other than macragges honor still being used by the imperium. Eternal Crusader and the word bearers gloriana class. I don’t know much about the word bearers one sorry
I am not sure but i remembered on drop in a out of the warp (space hulk like) and the emperor got one ? maybe i fucking don"t give this kind of toy without taking one.
Wrong. The black templar have tha Ethernal Crusader a gift from the Imperial Fist Legion and there's also Nemesis Chapter with their Lex Talonis a gift from the Ultramarines Legion previuosly named the Chornicles Of The Ashes by the Word Bearers Legion. Alpha Legions have two Gloriana Class Battleship named Alpha and Beta
Keep in mind that "fighters" in 40k are more like large gunships or small starships by any other universes standard. unlike starwars where a small snub fighter can kill a space station: a 40k bomber needs to be able to carry a large torpedo to punch through the thick armor of a starship and the bomber must be larger carry it. also unlike star wars void shields are powerful but are not counted on to keep a ship safe. A imperial ships main defense is good old armor plating plus a good point defense grid. ( this ignores eldar vessels and holo fields that are relied on for a main defence) keep in mind that ork vessels are simply not categorical as orks will just bolt of random bits of crap until the end of time. they will just keep getting bigger as they keep winning fights, kinda like orks themselves. Last but not least i want to mention that production times for 40k ships are massive. a single cruiser of average size may take decades to make and a full sized battleship may break the 100 year mark. they may be massively more powerful than other universes ships but that power comes at a price.
Not to mention the need to pray to every single nut and bolt during the construction. In all seriousness though, imperial ships are very durable because of it since the build quality is generally quite high due to the massive attention to every nook and cranny of the ship during construction
Ok it takes decades for the AVERAGE shipyard to make a cruiser. if you skip all the incantations and crap it would only take a good 6 or 7 years for a non feral world to make one and im sure theres 3 or 4 shipyards that can do just that. keep in mind that the ENTIRE feral world was dedicated to only feeding the sky temples. most planets will be keeping up several industry at once and not all if its resources will be going to the shipyards and even the shipyards will probable be working on several ships at once slowing things down for each individual one even more. that comment was ment as a general overview for people not familiar with 40k NOT a definitive guide. my main point still stands that 40k ships take ages to make compared to other universes.
Some vessels - like Emperor or Retribution classes - can take almost a century to construct, hence why they're so important and so rare. Lunars though? They are extremely easy to manufacture (by 40K standarts) and IIRC it's been known for some large shipyards (or was it Forge Worlds?) to build a Lunar from start to finish in as little as 6 months. Keep in mind that these would be the only shipyards capable of constructing battleships at all, and this neatly explains just why Lunar-class and its various modifications are so popular. The fact that Lunar's spaceframe allows for a lot of customisation, can handle the recoil of the Nova cannon if it's installed, and is extremely durable for the size and versatile in combat also helps matters.
After centuries of Dave bothering Eck to create more 40k content The Eckperor has finally graced us with this demand. I would like you to tackle Titan types. Even that goes really in depth.
The Furious Abyss was actually one of three Abyss class warships. While all three were built using the Imperium's resources and facilities, none of them can be classified as Imperial ships, since they were constructed and manned by traitor forces.

One of my favorite things about Warhammer 40,000 Voidships is that Frigates and Destroyer types are the size of Star Destroyers! (1 - 2 Kilometers) If your going to do more Warhammer ships, I would recommend looking through the Rogue Trader RPG Rulebooks (the newer ones, not the original Rogue Trader game); those have great descriptions and lists of Ship equipment, weapons, and even a range of "standard" Spaceships, at least for the Calixus Sector.
I love how big they make the void feel with these mighty vessels kilometres long manned by millions veritable cities in the cosmos yet they are still atoms when compared to the awesome vastness of the heavens
You know Its 40k, Where there is a society filled with Tens of Milion of people Entirely dedicated to Operated and Maintained One Space Vessel the difference when you look at Every Spaceship Battleship from Other Sci-Fi especially Star Wars Galactic Empire and Star trek, The first think you see that you directly know that the vessel its only for military used and have specific crew below 30,000 and you know what those vessel function or used for But once you See 40k Battleship, The first thing you came mind Its Not it is only armor battleship, But Rather Flying Space Human Settled Civilization that probably filled with Tens of Milion or Probably Hundreds of Milion until Bilions Because Actual Mindfucking Sheer and extremely long and wide the ship are, I believe if Great Crusade capital ship have average bilions passenger, armsmen and crew inside
@@rahadityap2375 billions is only really possible for an ark mechanicus(and those are so large and few that theyre probably all age of technology ships, the esperanza is one, and has a full stc, other vessels not so much, low millions for the rest,
Great vid, however, I noticed 3 thing you got wrong. First, void shield exist on all escort class ships and above. Second, in the Imperial Navy escort class ships are sub divided into Frigates and Destroyers. Frigates are to screen capital ships from attack craft, torpedoes, and other escorts, while Destroyers use torpedoes to directly attack enemy capital ships. Third, the Phalanx is a unique ship/fortress, a better example would have been the Ramilies class Star Fortress which is significantly smaller that the Phalanx but the Imperium is actually able to make them.

In Rogue Trader and Battlefleet Gothic "Rulebooks" they do state entire macrocannon volleys take several minutes to reach their targets since they usually fight between several hundred to several thousand km's from their targets, and this is reflects with the turn orders in the battles you can do in the table top or in the RPG's. Also the imperial navy did state in the rulebook Battlefleet Koronus of having merchant ship designs could be in tens of thousands of variety even going to say "no real ship is ever the same", due to the many different patterns, STC's and Colonies of the Imperium of Mankind. Its like having a techno regression set of warships, and you are right about Grand Cruisers, they do maintain many moth ball fleet or reserve fleets of them in many battlegroups and some Famous Rogue Traders have these as their flagships, with some dynasties having entire fleets of ancient warships and merchant vessels. Though some forge worlds like the Lathes worlds might be able to produce some but would rather build more of their Lathe-pattern cruisers. Also I would like you to cover on the lore of the Warp Drive Engines, it would give you a chance to talk about the Navigators, the Warp Eye, the Warp Itself along with the basics of Ship rites, duties and phases involved in Warp Jumps and the types of Warp Jumps. Great Video as always! The Emperor Protects =][= Also for space battles try the Battle Gethsemane it was a major battle for the Gothic War which was the 12th Black Crusade.
>several hundred to several thousand kilometers to target Try tens to hundreds of thousand. 1 Void Unit (VU) is 10,000 km and is considered knife fight distances.
*Checks the core Rogue Trader Rulebook* Huh you're right, which means that Teleportariums aren't that bad, max range being on average 5 Void Units or 50,000km. Btw the group I Gm'ed loved Hit and Run attacks along with using Squadrons and Specializing their warships.
@@thyreradim7885 They are a thing but it's not pinpoint accuracy. Macro cannon fire is saturation fire that covers the general are a starship could maneuver in to cause hits. It may take twenty minutes for the shots to arrive but it covers such a large area that you are usually unable to avoid all of them. Imperial vessels cant stop on a dime in space and significant delta v is needed to get a 700,000 ton vessel out of a predicted killzone covering tens of thousands of cubic kilometers. Despite some Napoleanic tactics the distances and scaling are relatively realistic compared to some other franchises like star wars.
+Exnihilo Adnihilum, that I will buy. Now question, you don't believe for a second that any faction in wh40k can be beat by all of star wars ever together do you? If you do......HERETIC.
I really want to hear you talking about the Imperium's ctrl at del, the exterminatus, the various ways to carry one out and how it compares to other sci-fi planetary destruction technologies
KenchLife Maximus ranges from plausible, cracking the planets crust with enough fire power to leave the planet a molten ball. To somewhat believable in a universe where there’s a god of plagues that can cause a virus to spread over an entire planet and decay all mater to a primordial slurry in a day. To just op fuck the laws of the universe and lets make a torpedo that any ship can carry that will create a blackhole to destroy whatever we want. Hell the mechanicum does have the blueprints for a device to teleport an entire planet wherever they want kicking around somewhere. And thats just humans nvm the fuck off reality the eldar or necrons could do if they really wanted. And then star wars and halo have to make giant ass space stations to do the same thing.
I'm particularly fond of the Krourk Ogryn Auxilia method of exterminatus. They literally take a bunch of abnormally-angry Ogryn and drop them on a planet, and just leave for a couple months. By the time they come back the Ogryn will have killed everything.
Who would win: One Imperial fleet Or One Mars Class with a standard Nova Cannon. (50m diameter shell fired at near lightspeed) Yey 40k in all its beautiful ridiculous glory!

EckhardtsLadder doing a purely 40k video, amazing. If you enjoyed doing this, I'd love to see you do a Battle Breakdown of the Battle of Gethsemane in 40k.
Awesome video, buddy!! Please please please cover more of the Navy and go into detail for factions like Marines, Chaos Marines, and Guard. I'm loving your work, hope you enjoy making this stuff.
I feel like this universe is super complex and elaborate but totally worth the lore digging and shit, I would love to see more like this bro keep up the good shit
I'm quite fascinated by the Iron Warriors. Perturabo was one of the most inventive and creative among the Primarchs, and his geneseed probably had the best compatibility rate, which was why his legion was able to grow so fast. If he weren't so completely disinterested in war and actually applied that creativity to make tactics that didn't result in high casualty rates for his men, his legion would outnumber Guilliman's.
More 40k vids would be great i would love to see a video on the titans of the 40 first millennia. Or some on the Battle strategies used by the Imperium.
Can you do a video on Necron ships? I have yet to see a single one on youtube, and with battlefleet gothic armada 2 (which will have Necrons in it) coming out soon, any info on their ships would be highly appreciated.
One thing you have to cover when talking about navies in 40K, is physical size. I've gotten confirmation from GW that cruiser or larger vessels are so large, that some of their crew have forgotten that they are on a star ship. More specifically, the smallest escort ship the Cobra, is the same size as Star Wars' Imperial Star Destroyer. The star ship Enterprise from Star Trek (TOS) is so small, that it could be carried in a 40K ship's hanger. Another thing you should cover is the pre-Battle Fleet Gothic era vessels. While some are early versions of Gothic vessels, their are some unique ships. There is the ironclad, that were build during the dark age of technology. There is the Stalwart which has a holo-type screen to block's enemy fire at allied ships. There are other ships that would fit into the 40K universe, but are not included in Battle Fleet Gothic.
+Rodney Kelly, Forerunner from halo have standard Command ship sizes of 300+ km. sooooo meme, for reference the Phalanx is (pretty sure) the largest ship and it's "only" 60 km.
+Austin Reid, the Phalanx is the strongest/largest ship in the Imperium lol (ark mechanicus vessels don't count as their technically not imperium ships), also it's not small fry lol it's by far one of the most powerful ships in modern wh40k. And no it's 60km lol, makes you wonder about the size of Titans now doesn't it. P.S. the largest titan of the Imperium of man is the Imperator and they are only (counting the cathedral on the back) 55.5 meters tall XD. Without the cathedral they are only like 43 meters tall.
+Mewtwo, nope, the phalanx is not the size of the moon lol it's 60 km. Also even if it wasn't 60km, the only other descriptive thing of it's size is that it was "the size of a small moon or large asteroid" which is much much closer to 60 km than 1,736 km.
please please please make more WH40K content. I’ve been fallowing your channel since way way back when you had just started doing Starship Versus and I think doing one where an Empero Class Battleship went up against the Imperial Executor or a Covenant CSO would be fantstic! 40k content is always appreciated. I'd love to see videos about the ships of other 40k factions! Ork Roks, Space Hulks, Eldar Craftworlds, Tyranid Hive Ships, so many to choose from.
I'm all about learning more about Warhammer. I think the universe is super cool and I've played the old games, but there is a certain barrier to entry when it comes to learning more since there is so much. Loved the video!
Fallout prewar America Vs. Brotherhood of Nod at the start of the third Tiberium War Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier VS. Venator-class Star Destroyer
Quaizer vs Venator? Venator, more guns, more armor, more fighters, better shields. If it was a Liberator, I wouldnt know, but the Quasar is not a brawling ship and can only take so many squads.
This vid is about classes of imperial warships, we don't have space hulks in our navy trust me im a Warmaster lol im sure Eckhart will get around to mentioning them in another vid
Space hulk are not of the imperial navy but usually they are described as multiple imperial ship amassed together usually and being soo big that space hulk have their own atmosphere space hulk sometimes are infested by ork, genestealer or chaos marine also space hulk are capable to teleport themself inside and outside the warp
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! keep doing warhammer videos! I love all of your star wars/halo videos and 40k is a great new direction for your videos... trust me you will not run out of video ideas for a VERY long time! (do a necron video sometime)
There's never enough 40k. Definitely need to see more. If you haven't done it, Titans would be a fun one to see. Across all factions would be even better.
"Space combat in 40k hasn't been as fully explored...at least in...technical specifications." I'll raise you 2 fat codecies with all of that in them for the tabletop game.
Watching this video made me think of Starwars vs Warhammer who would win video you made some time ago, and I realised that your point about the Empire being able to win in some scenarions with space superiority falls flat, not because they dont have resouces, but because thier tactics, fleet fexibility and experience in prolonged combat is a galaxy sized joke compared to what 40K can offer, and some ppl can accuse me, that it comes only from bias (although I am a big fan of both universes), but they can not overlook the huge strategy flaws that Star Wars Empire had, like extremly bad fighters and lack of them, fleet foccused on spreading fear insted of actuall military might and loosing to a bunch of rebels using GR-75 (though the last one can be just put on the unbelievable amount of plot armor and lack of it that Star Wars universe gives to factions). I'd say that the old Republic had far greater chances of deffending against 40K invasion than any other faction, meybe with the exception of CIS, because at the scenario you've given us last time, invading forces knew nothing about the galactic geography, which allows CIS to simply pump out hordes of droids and hoping that it takes the Imperium so long to find thier planets that they will be beaten and bleeding (so something like in Halo).
Yea ship to ship Star Wars would get absolutely fucking pulverized. The only real advantage for Star Wars is that Hyperspace is exponentially faster than the Warp so they could outmaneuver WH40K
@Lord Inquisitor Steiner von Willhelm at first. But remember some planets have fleets numbering in the thousands. Star Wars has speed and they have numbers. Honestly against just the Imperium it would be a bit back and forth I think
Thank The Emperor CZcams recommended this to me... I had no idea it was just uploaded, nor did I know of Eckhart, and his amazing editing, lore knowledge, etc; thanks dude and you earned a sub! Near the end of the video you mention how the Imperium has some mega ships that defy standard classification and should be examined in their own right.. I would LOVE a video on that.

I'm a massive fan of your channel, I've watched (well, listened) to a large amount of your material while driving long distance, and the succinct and organized manner in which you deal with Halo and Star Wars has made your channel my go-to channel for lore and comparisons. I'm as much a fan of 40K as I am the other two aforementioned universes, and to see you starting to covering that universe with your same style and accuracy as you do everything else joys me to no end. Keep it up! 40K is a wonderful, rich universe filled with excessive lore and technology that is only truly covered in the Gothic-style embellishment that is emblematic of the universe. This, however, makes the universe lacking in the technical overviews that you make so beautifully on your channel. I can't describe how excited I am to see yous tarting to take on 40K, and seriously hope you continue to do so! ...Damn, sorry to get so wordy xD
Autumn class cruisers always had shields. The Pillar of Autumn was, despite its refits, a Halcyon class, and was in operation before shield tech was applied to starships of its type. The Autumn class is entirely post war, and all ships were designed with shields already incorporated.

I absolutely love 40k, especially their space combat. I love their ship design and lore, and would absolutely love to see more videos about them, either Battle Breakdowns or VS matchups!
Good video, but I wish to say the Gloriana ships were a class of their own and the "20 only" you find on the wikia is outdated, thanks to new books detailing how they were used more often. They weren't just legiones Astartes flagships, but also for the normal human battlefleet at that time. The word bearers alone had 9 of them! Also "slow" is relative in 40k, if combat speed is at 75% lightspeed and the ships with lances have a range of an entire star system :p. Otherwise continue your great work on 40k!
MOAR!!!!!In the name of the God Emperor!!!!Starting 40k videos is a wonderful idea of yours Eckharts and i promise you that you will not regret it.Have a beautiful day or night.-An Imperial Guardsman loyal to you.The Emperor protects.
I love and adore this channel and as a huge 40k and Star Wars fan I'd love to see you do some ship to ship versus between the two universes to see how the fleets stack up. Please do more warhammer videos so awesome. Keep up the incredible work and congratulations on the upcoming birth of your child. Much love and respect brother.
Slight clarification: with a very small number of exceptions, escorts do have void shields. Void shields on military vessels can be classified by their general strength, and how many layers they generate (a void shield can almost indefinitely dissipate impacts unless a single impulse overwhelms the generators, at which point emergency cut offs deactivate the shield rather than risk blowing the generators, so multiple layers are better). Shield strength can be broadly categorised as light, medium and heavy; destroyers are generally the only military vessels with light void shields, all other ships have medium void shields. Heavy void shields are, normally, only mounted on the front arc of cruisers (not light cruisers, except those based on the Endeavour-class), battlecruisers, and battleships (excluding the carrier focused ones). Layers wise, things are much more standardised; escorts and light cruisers have single layer shields, cruisers and battlecruisers have two layer shields, grand cruisers have two or three layer cruisers (almost all those still in Imperial reserves have three layer shields), and battleships have four or five layer shields (except the little produced, and perhaps poorly named, Invincible-class).
My favourite form of exterminatus is the one where they just dump a bunch of angry Ogryns on a planet and leave for a couple months. I am not joking, this is an actual thing they do.

If your going to do more Warhammer ships, I would recommend looking through the Rogue Trader RPG Rulebooks (the newer ones, not the original Rogue Trader game); those have great descriptions and lists of Ship equipment, weapons, and even a range of "standard" Spaceships, at least for the Calixus Sector.

Phalanx is classed as a star ship according to lore, and in the newer stuff was actually built by dorn

The Emperor Protects =][=
Also for space battles try the Battle Gethsemane it was a major battle for the Gothic War which was the 12th Black Crusade.
>several hundred to several thousand kilometers to target
Try tens to hundreds of thousand.
+Exnihilo Adnihilum, considering that broadsides are a thing I really doubt that.

Yeeessss more of this please Eckhart. I've wanted more details about the 40k ships for a while now and you'd be perfect for it.
Thank you so much for producing a 40K Video! Keep it up.
+Rodney Kelly, Forerunner from halo have standard Command ship sizes of 300+ km. sooooo meme, for reference the Phalanx is (pretty sure) the largest ship and it's "only" 60 km.
the phalanx is a small fry in the wh40k universe, and last i checked, it is about the size of the earths moon (for reference aboot 3000 ish km across)
Without the cathedral they are only like 43 meters tall.
the Phalanx is the size of the moon, unless you are trying top say that the moon is only 60km you are wrong.
+Mewtwo, nope, the phalanx is not the size of the moon lol it's 60 km. Also even if it wasn't 60km, the only other descriptive thing of it's size is that it was "the size of a small moon or large asteroid" which is much much closer to 60 km than 1,736 km.
Also, I wonder if Eck will ever make a video on ork ship classification...

Space Hulks are more like stations than an actual ship.
