T'arresta.
(Imelda cela rapidamente
il foglio.)
LIDA
(Oh ciel!... )
ROLANDO
Pria di partir, te, donna,
E il frutto
Del nostro imene
A riveder mi trasse Amor
(ad Imelda che rientra)
L'adduci al sen paterno.
(commosso,
e cercando reprimersi)
(Il ciglio molle ha di pianto!...)
LIDA (Chi mi regge?)
ROLANDO O figlio!...
(Imelda riede col fanciullo,
lo depone in braccio a Rolando,
ed esce veloce per l'opposto lato.
Rolando sta in lungo amplesso
tra il figlio e la sposa.)
ROLANDO
Vittoria il ciel promise
All'armi nostre, ma vittoria a prezzo
Di sangue! E dove il mio
Tutto spargessi...
LIDA
Non seguir!
ROLANDO (accennando il figlio)
Tu resti
Insegnatrice di virtude a lui.
LIDA
(Ed a tanti martir serbata io fui!)
ROLANDO Digli ch'è sangue italico,
Digli ch'è sangue mio,
Che dei mortali è giudice
La terra no, ma Dio!
E dopo Dio la Patria
Gli apprendi a rispettar.
LIDA Sperda ogni tristo augurio
La man che tempra il fato...
Non sai che a tanto strazio
Mal regge il cor spezzato!...
Che il di novello un orfano
Potrebbe in lui trovar!
(serrandosi al petto il fanciullo)
ROLANDO
(Fa inginocchiere il fanciulletto
ed alzati gli occhi al cielo,
stende la destra sul capo di lui.)
Deh! Meco benedici
Il figlio mio, Signor!
LIDA Dall'ire dei nemici
Gli salva il genitor.

ROLANDO (entering)
Wait.
(Imelda quickly hides
the letter.)
LIDA
(Oh, heavens!...)
ROLANDO
Love brought me,
before going,
To see you and our son.
(to Imelda)
Bring the boy to his father.
(moved, yet trying
to hold in his emotion)
(Her eyes
Are wet with tears!)
LIDA (Who will sustain me?)
ROLANDO My son!
(Imelda returns with the boy.
She puts him in Rolando's arms
and quickly goes out.
Rolando holds his wife
and child in a long embrace.)
ROLANDO
Heaven has promised triumph
To our arms, but triumph is at the price
Of blood. If mine
Should all be shed...
LIDA
Do not continue!
ROLANDO (indicating his son)
You must always
Teach him all the virtues.
LIDA
(Was I preserved to undergo
such suffering!)
ROLANDO
Tell him that he is of Italian blood,
Tell him that he is of my blood,
That the judge of mortals
Is not the earth, but God!
And after God, teach him
Respect for his country.
LIDA May the hand that controls our fate
Dispel all gloomy presages...
