    Tip. Scrape the coating off first. Get down to the virgin material. Sweep the area. Make a small 2" or so slice at both ends of the split. Nail down the edges approximately 4" on center. This will prevent the split from traveling. Then do just what he did.
    Observation; This man has done this before. I have been in the industry over fourty years.
    To all...... have a great life!

      @@amirmahallati3414 if you're repairing a roof split . (IF Possible) using roofing nails. Nail down both edges of the split. Keep nails a maximum of four inches apart. Then apply the roofing cement and fabric. You don't really need to. However I have found that by doing it (nailing) it's less likely to split again.
      Note..... roof splitting is a sure sign of roof failure and replacement should be considered.

    One tip discovered after years of patching flat roofs. Buy yourself a good triangular type trowel with an offset handle. Also a plastic round handle (as opposed to wood with rectangular profile) is easier to grip. You have better leverage, can apply the roofing cement very smoothly and quickly, and it saves on your back. I found my trowel in the Home Depot area with buckets of roofing compounds, and it wasn't much more expensive than a drywall blade. As for clean up, I pour a little mineral spirits on one side of the trowel, spread it around with my bare fingers, let it soak in for a minute, and wipe it off with a paper towel. Repeat on the other side. After the trowel is clean of cement, I wash it with soap and water, dry it with another clean paper towel, and give it a wide-angle spray with WD-40. It will last for years. Then clean your hands with the mineral spirits and hand cleaner.

    This video was exactly what I needed......I have a flat roof on the addition the previous owners put on, they put down simple torch down rolls and didnt incline the roof what so ever, water pools in two areas and eventually found its way between the seams of rolls of material.......I ran the repair just like you did in the video and I am here to tell you, it completely stopped all the leaks, I found other areas that are not leaking yet but I am going to do some preventative patches to help me get at least another year to two out of my roof before I rebuild it with some low pitch trusses.....thanks again for the video.

    Hey Gr8 job..!! a tip to have a nice & even finish, use masking or some sort of tape with good adhesion put it all around and then apply your mesh and finish off with your henry compound, after you've evened/levelled it out peel off the tape to reven a nice square or rectangular patch!!

    Take the fiberglass webbing, lay it over the repair area, then coat the upside with tar and slightly beyond the webbing. Now flip it and put it over the ghosted area. Press it all over with your trowel and now top coat it. Saves you guessing the size of the first layer of goop.

    Good video. You do an excellent job on explaining and providing info. Enjoy your videos.
    Do you think that would also be a good solution on an asphalt shingle (like going over a missing shingle tab that blew off) and chimney flashing (rook caulked but it just don't last)? Or other products?

    • @OldSoulMillennial
      @OldSoulMillennial  Před 5 lety +3

      For the missing shingle, I would just replace the shingle. Its not that hard to do. Honestly I am not sure how this product will preform when it comes to flashing repairs. In my opinion its a great product and is backed by good reviews. I plan to use it to do my chimney flashing. I think you just encouraged me to make another video about it and we can both see how it preforms. Just have to wait until the temps warm up

    In my experience with most roofing patch compounds, including the Henry's shown here, you will get 2 -3 years before it will show considerable cracking. I live in a very sunny place so UV is high here which ages it considerably. If the surface permits silicon will last much longer.

      @Mari-oq6xf Před 3 lety

      @davidv7275 Před 3 lety

      @@Mari-oq6xf No I live in New Mexico. I have used Gaco Roof on few projects. They also sell one which has fibers in the silicone, depending on your project. There are lots of good videos on your tube for application. Buying it on line (vs store) generally will save you a few bucks.

    That roof is a mess, agreed. mesh tape and roof cement every seam and crack. let cure. then when you do your coating, silver coat everything 3 coats. gonna need a crap ton of coating to fill in everything but it should buy you at least 3 more yrs maybe more

    • @rupe53

      Eduardo ... if you need to slightly lighten the color you can sprinkle a little sand or dried cement on the tar while it's wet. Enough will stick to help it blend in.

    • @OldSoulMillennial
      @OldSoulMillennial  Před 4 lety +4

      If comfortable, go up on the roof and look at or uphill from the leak. My flat roof was clearly cracked. It shouldn't be that complicated to track down. If you don't see anything obvious, it may be coming from a missing piece of siding, bad flashing, ect.
