  • Make a DIY melody box that greets you when you turn on your car! This is a fun little project I have for you today. Have your car greet you every time you start your car with this DIY Melody Box! In this episode we wire up a simple sound module that plays any recording or greeting you upload to it when you start your car. Super easy to do!
    Parts You'll Need*:
    -Sound Module w/button: amzn.to/2KZmyTc
-High Quality (Important!) Micro USB Cable: amzn.to/2NElIMt
    -Butt Connectors or solder: amzn.to/2NJWyfB
    -Wire Crimping Tool: amzn.to/3sXObx7
-Audio Recording - My channel support Ko-fi page: ko-fi.com/s/8723a46daa
    -Cigarette Car Charger: amzn.to/3cfT52n
    -(Optional) 12V to 5V Voltage Regulator: amzn.to/3qVZW5i
-Project Box (to hold the guts): amzn.to/35JeCfp
-I can also provide audio already translated into Japanese for a smal donation to support the channel: ko-fi.com/s/8723a46daa
*The merchant links provided can be affiliate links and the channel earns a small commission from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. These include but are not limited to the eBay Partner Network and the Amazon Associates Program. Thank you for your support!
    Notes:
    1. Use a high quality (fast charging capable) USB cables! Cheap $1 cables do not work (I tried). The one that came with your phone should do the trick.
    2. You can find diagrams of the module and how I wired it up on our Facebook page linked here: bit.ly/2NHUgh0
    3. Only one sound will play. If you want to change the sound you will need to plug it back into a computer and drag and drop a new file.
    4. You can put multiple files on the module but they will play one after the other.
    5. You can hardwire into your car with a tap a fuse (no USB for power) but will need a step down voltage regulator (link in the description)
    6. A user has also suggested splicing the power wires into a USB cable (of any choice) to power the unit instead of relying on the micro usb port on the board. This could be a good option if you are having problems consistently powering the unit on via USB cable.

When I received the board I had some troubles making it work properly, so I thought it was right to inform everyone about some things:
If you connect the device to the USB on your PC and you don't see the green light, you need to flip a small switch next to the battery cables which lets you choose between getting power from the Mini-USB or battery pack.
If you connect the board on the PC with USB, load the files, but can't hear anything when you press the button, is because this thing is NOT supposed to work when the device is recognizable by the PC. To make it work, simply pull the USB out slowly from your PC enough to unplug the device but not enough to turn off the green LED and your sound should play automatically.
You can also regulate the volume by turning a small potentiometer on the board (usually is set to the max).
I had to figure all this out on my own since this thing doesnt come with a manual, so I hope this might help someone!

    • @AleLGB
      @AleLGB Před 2 lety

@@d4nk298 It's not your pc or power adapter's fault: this thing is designed to work only when the USB power pins are engaged. If the ones used for data are powered (afaik the small ones in the middle), it will go in "write only" mode and it won't play audio. I'd suggest to get a chinese adapter which hopefully only the power cables are connected, or modify one and remove the data connections by yourself.

You could technically use any speaker as long as its 8ohm resistance. The stock speaker is also decent enough if you want to try it out. You could always swap it later.
Alternatively you can buy something like a project box to house all the guts and just run a usb out the box. amzn.to/3byb56f

TIP if your computer isn't seeing the device when you're trying to add MP3s: Make sure the micro USB you're using to connect to the PC is data transfer capable. Most common micro USB cables (even if they have the trident logo) are actually only capable of power (charge), so the sound module won't appear like a flash drive the way it's supposed to.
Also, you won't be able to tell if a cable is data transfer (unless you cut it), so try multiple before you give up. The one included with the sound module IS data transfer.

Playback is disabled when the board is in file transfer mode. To bypass this, you'll need to convert any micro usb cable to power only. This can be done by PHYSICALLY BLOCKING the data contacts on the usb (square side) with something. I used black tape.
The middle two contacts are data, the outer two are power. Simply take some black tape and tape over the two center contacts so that only the two outer gold contacts are exposed.

Hey! I ordered the module although it doesn’t play anything when I plug it in anywhere. The light on the motherboard is on which means its getting current but it isn’t playing the audio. It only worked when I plugged it into my wall charger but only that specific one. Any other plugin it doesn’t want to play the audio but it is getting current. Not even working when it is in the car. I did make sure I got a high quality micro usb. I am assuming my problem is the voltage but not too sure what else it could be. Wanted to get your opinion on this situation! Appreciate the help in advanced! 🙏🏼

    • @HazardGarage
      @HazardGarage  Před 3 lety +3

Yeah the module can be finicky.
Plugged into my computer no sound. Plugged into my car w/bad cable. no sound. Plugged into a portable battery, sound.
If the cable is high quality. You can try wiggling the micro usb connection a bit. Another user had some luck with that. Also having a good cigarette lighter usb adapter too. I think the module is VERY picky with its power source.
As for me, getting a good cable and wiggling the connection a bit on the board side did it for me. Works every time now.
Worst case scenario you could always use the 2 power wires (that are unused if powering via usb). Just be aware that you will need a voltage regulator as 12V to the module with fry it.
Hope it works out! Sometimes a little wiggling around is all thats needed.

I’m not a professional electrician but I recently read about an electronic part called “rectifier diode” and a “timer delay”.
I’m thinking to connect the mp3 module to the car speaker line using a time delay and a rectifier, meanwhile playing the sound I want. The module will also use a diode rectifier and connect to the same radio speaker line. When the timer ends. The radio line will close and the module line will open.
The purpose of the diode is to ensure the flow of electricity to one direction meaning that no voltage output from the module comes into the radio.

***How to fix looping after car starts. After a little digging I think the sound boards from Amazon will loop after the car starts. On the board there will be 3 small resistors labeled “A B and C” to stop the looping you have to remove the B resistor. You can do this by rubbing the soldering iron back and forth till the solder melts and it will just fall off. For a detailed example to remove micro resistors you can just look it up.This should fix it!
