Hi, Eivør is from Færøyene Here she is in team with a Norwegian group called Vamp. Vamp had this concert in a place in the Sogne Fjorden in Norway. The place called Stigen which is high above the fjord. It was Norwegian TV that filmed the concert and I was one of the lucky ones who got to be at this concert and take part in this fantastic voice artist from the Færøyene. Locky me :-)

As a Sweden, that is a realy nice place. Didnt realise it at first, but around 20 years ago (young and full of curiosity) I and friends was traveling the Sogne Fjorde and walked the mountains in/around Aurland, and we finaly rested at a old farm high above the fjord. Never realy remembered what it was called. But now It hit me, I was there, Stigen. Recognised one of the houses I was leaning towards that day. Fun how memories can sneak up on you like that.
Sadly, it wasnt when Eivor was there.
      Cheers.

Also on a personal note. While Eivør is from the Faeroe Islands, she lives here in Denmark. And during the lockdown periods within the last year, she has done a handful of live streams from her home singing some of her songs along with her husband and sisters, even taking requests from the chat. All in order to keep up spirits. It was such a nice experience and I, living alone, was very grateful for these small oasis of joy in this lonely year.

Eivør is actually classically trained, she went to a music school and studied jazz. She started out very young as a singer in a metal band, went on to jazz and singer/songwriter acoustic stuff with some folk elements. Did some rock in between. In the past 5 years however, she began experimenting with electronic music and rock, combinig that with folk elements.
She taught the growl/beatbox thing herself however, cause she always wanted to be able beatbox and discovered this ability in the process.
Every album she made has a completely different sound and vibe. One of her most popular and most reacted to songs would be "Falling Free" live at the Old Theatre, it's a great display of her ability and the passion and energy in her music.
I can also really recommend "Gullspunnin" live from I Luftini, from her latest album, and "Wake Me Up" from RTT, this one really showcases her seemingly endless vocal range and flexibility. :)

I’m so happy you finally found Eivør! She truly has a musical soul that just pours out of her so magically! She is a fantastic volcalist/multi-instrumentalist. One thing I love about how she performs this song is that she never seems to perform it in the same way. There are several versions on CZcams and none of them are the same but all of them are so good! She is such a creative artist, I’m convinced music was her first language.

The title translates to spellbound and she describes her devotion to the mage that did this to her. The "beatbox" episodes are when she is performing "Galdr" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galdr which is a sourcery/enchantment mostly performed by women. Seeresses outof which the three most important are Urd, Skuld and Verdandi that weave the cloth of destiny for all men and women. Old Norse mythology. If she really does galdr or just imitates it, is up to what you believe.

This music takes me back to the Iron Age of the Vikings and Celts... wonderful! It is waking deep emotions inside; the venue is superbly suited to the song...
After dissecting the performance, listen to it again, close your eyes and surrender your emotions to it. :)
I'm not any expert on the Faroes but I am a student of ancient Celtic history. These islands were one of the crossroads of Iron Age Celts and ancient Norse peoples. Genetically, I am aware that it is difficult to sort the genes of the Nordic peoples from the Celts as they were historically intertwined here and other parts of the far North Atlantic.

This was not shot on the Faroe Islands. They are drop dead gorgeous, but they are very remote and almost treeless. This was shot at a historic farm on a fjord in Norway. The Faroe Islands are self governing but part of Denmark. Eivor lives on the continent in Denmark, most of which is fairly flat. If you want scenery like in the video above you will need to go to Norway. Not an inexpensive place to visit. Petrol is $12/gallon and if you eat out the food is pricey. Accommodations are on the high side of average for Europe. I haven't been there but, I would like to go and have done some research. Unbelievable scenery. Lodging in the off season is less expensive but, you'd better like snow and/or rain.

Unfortunately that's not the Faroe Islands, but Norway. But the Faroe Islands are also breathtaking, although they look very different.
You are impressed by Eivør and what she can do with her voice, but she only demonstrates half of it, in this song.
She can go almost an octave higher, than in this song. She does it, in the song "Falling Free". There's a video on CZcams, live from Tórshavn, which is also a must-see.

You are one of the first to notice the strong similarity of this Eivor track to the music of Native Americans. Great, that's it. Similar rhythm, percussions, beat, sounds.
Was there any assumption that the Vikings and Native Americans had contacts a long time ago? Theme for the movie :) Thanks for Eivor and I recommend "Falling Free" at the Old Torshavn, masterpiece.

There is no question. The Greenlanders, who had significant back and forth traffic with Iceland, the Faeroes and elsewhere in the Scandinavian world, met the Inuit. And quite likely the Beothuk, Innu and Mi'kmaq. Possibly the Mohawk and Wolostoq.

See how she stands there in a modest summery dress, totally unaffected while she sings the call of the ancients. She is a Nordic spirit who walks among us, so sweet and humble. But you can tell when the spirit of her ancestors rises up within her and takes over her human persona.

Eivør has a rather big back catalog, where you will find very diverse music. I was building a playlist the other day and realised this. There are songs rooted in folk music like this one. There is classical orchestral stuff as well as varité/musical style songs. She has done a score for a tv show. There is jazz. But her main body of work I think lies in a indie/pop/folk/rock range. So yeah, all over the musical spectrum I guess. And then there are covers. From Leonard C. to Kate Bush (I takes a lot for me to accept people covering kate Bush, but Eivør actually succeeds). And many collaborations with other artists, so many. So don't expect the first 4 songs you hear from Eivør to be anything like each other. People will lead you towards the Falling Free (Torshavn version) for what will be obvious reasons. Other songs I would recommend are True Love. Surrender (from the London solo sessions) Rain (acoustic stripped back version) and of cause the song that introduced me to Eivør: Í Tokoni (or Into the Mist if you want the english version, it is almost just as good as the faeroese version).

There are some great suggestions in the comments and I'm sure you will love the experience of finding out more about this talented performer/songwriter/diplomat. One of my personal favorites is Eivør's cover of "May It Be" which she performed for Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. She does so much with her voice that makes the song more interesting than the original by Enya. I'm an Enya fan but, for "May It Be", I go to Eivør.

First a detail - the Faeroe islands are not volcanic, though the environment is more dramatic than the Norwegian fjord shown in the video (however much I love our Norwegian fjords). For volcanic nature, go on the ferry Norröna in the evening and wake up to the eastern part of Iceland.
Then, to the singing while breathing in. To speak "on the in-breath" is a feature of at least some of the Norse languages. It is just something we do, I'm told it sounds weird, even scaring, for some people.
That is not to doubt that she has learned from other cultures. But it is also a clear reference to the traditional Faeroese sing-dance folklore. The drum at times is close to the stamping of feet:

I have been to the Faroe Islands, they are absolutely _magical_. If you like wild natural scenery, you should absolutely travel there. Well.... you might have to wait a year or ten before it is advisable to travel anywhere, bust still....
As for this video in particular, it is recorded in Norway, on a farm called "Stigen". This name translates into "The Path" in English. While I can see immense difference between Norway and the Faroe Islands, I can see how a non-Scandinavian can easily confuse the two.
If you want to react to any more of her songs, you can try "Falling Tree", "True Love", "I Tókuni", "Salt"... The list can go on quite long. She has one cooperation with the Norwegian group Vamp, where they perform the song "Tir na noir": Vamp sing in Norwegian and Eivør in Faroese, it's a favourite of mine: czcams.com/video/cfGPz2sVw4E/video.html

They have a unique style. As we're going in to the holidays, you might want to listen to one of their versions of "Guli Guli" which celebrates the Balto-Slavic midwinter festival of Kalyada or Rūžiņu Duorziņā which is a recent song dedicated to people of Ukraine.
