Lovely to see you have found Eivør. She is a gem beloved all over Scandinavia and beyond. I call her style and sound north atlantic. You find it in Norway, Iceland, Scotland, Ireland and England. We love female voices like her and Auroras, they are so extremely feminine! Her chanting is very old style, it is called “galdr” in old norse! Roots back to the Viking times. And she comes from the Faroe islands, right smack in old viking country! Their language are related to Icelandic.

The way this song builds reminds me a little of Travel by The Gathering with the wonderful Anneke van Gierbergen. Very different vocals although both brilliant. I love singers like this that are so free with their vocals. She reminds me a little of Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins. A bit of Aurora, a bit of Bjork. All artists that do their own thing and do it perfectly.

In my head, I've got Eivør in a group with Aurora and maybe Kate Bush. Floor and Lara, they are in a separate category. Really gorgeous, but their voices don't get me like the first group does. Hope Sandoval is in that first group, as well. Maybe I'm just weird...

@@johnjohn37371I don't know why you compare Arora with Eivør. Arora is a nice singer, but she is not at all in the high category of Eivør. Arora can't sing the high notes like Eivør at all. Arora is popular as a sweet innocent nice singer. When you hear Eivør, you hear a unique voice that is among the best and strongest female voices that have ever existed. Eivør is unique and does things in her own unique way. Aurora has chosen to become popular by singing pop music with a slightly mysterious, strange performance that makes her more visible on the world's music scene. Eivør is just Eivør who is not like other popular singers. Eivør's strong voice completely dominates the other female singers. And besides that, Eivør's voice is perfect for the music and lyrics she performs with. Many times people do not understand her songs because Eivør often sings in her old Nordic language which is Faroese. Other times Eivør sings in English but often people forget to listen to her words because they are so fascinated by her voice. This song she sings here is actually a very deep and sad song. Eivør grew up on the Faroe Islands surrounded by mountains and deep valleys where the sea controls the fate of the islands and people. A very large part of the population of the Faroe Islands sails on all the seas of the world because the Faroese grow up together with the sea and mountains, so the sea and mountains become part of their life and personality. The song is inspired by her home, the Faroe Islands.

@@roykilgour9790 If you read my comment, you saw, " In my head...". I was speaking of the way a select group of female singers affect my psyche...they take me to a completely different place mentally... Aurora and Eivør are included in that group, along with Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Hope Sandoval, Sarah McLachlan...I was comparing no one, really. Style and technique really have nothing to do with it, it's just about what their music does to me🙂

I feel like it is more put on the ends of her phrases so they last longer/feel etheral (not sure if that is reverb or delay, am a simple listener 😅) but I love it, especially when at her chanting part, she picks up the "end" of the notes and the reverb makes it sound like some kind of sea bird in a dark northern seastorm 😍

I agree. This is associated with the Nordic song tradition too, I guess - our female singers go vowel-hunting with their lokk/kulning (originally "galdr") traditional ways. At the same time, Kate Bush is more Avant Gard in her hunting grounds, if that makes any sense. It is interesting to me that Eivør here seems to blend lokk with Sami-like vocal techniques in places. It is really cool, check out around 10:30

The sound tech on the board is a active member of the performance. Different echo depths and reverb intensity on almost every vocal passage, hands on control. Also her live performance endings are meandering & unstructured and just winging it with the flow which gives her that “personalized” special connection with her audience which is usually in a jaw dropping trance by the end.

Back to Eivør. Christi, it may be interesting to you to know that Eivør has a very strong backround in Jazz. I think the first bands that she was in were Jazz bands. She since diversified into folk and rock but I think the jazz backround still influences her songwriting.

This is why I prefer her version of Enya's "May It Be" from Lord of the Rings that she sang at Queen Margrethe's 40th jubilee in 2012. In that performance it would be much better to wear headphones or earbuds b/c Eivør does some really subtle things with her voice that, almost subliminally, effect the tones/notes she is producing. Also, it seems like her high head voice is higher than the 'whistle" notes of some singers (e.g.: Mariah Carey, Morissette Amon, etc.). Does that mean "whistle" note is a technique and not a note on the scale?

Hello again, Christi 🙂 Thank you so much for a very beautiful and thourough analysis of Eivör and this performance. This is probably one of my all time favorite performances, regardless of artist/band. Everything about it is just extremely beautiful IMO. Eivör holds third spot on my favorite female vocalist list, after Angelina and Aurora, in that order 🙂 There is one more performance that competes with this one, and that is Aurora's performance of "Through The Eyes Of A Child" at Nidarosdomen. Nidarosdomen is Norway's oldest and most beautiful cathedral, and dates back to the 11th century, right after the viking era. I am aware that you reacted to Auroa's stripped version of this one year ago, but I REALLY think you should take a look at this one as well, as I'm 100% sure you will just love it. As Eivør has a gift for singing, you certainly have a gift for analyzing and articulating what you are listening to. I do love that! Eivør has to be one of the greatest singers to have graced the airwaves in a long time. She continually pushes the boundaries in whatever she tackles. Your mention of her being the Nordic Kate Bush rings loud and clear. Kate is one of her idols and she has covered a number of her songs over the years. You must see her cover of 'Hounds of Love'. She embraces it with so much passion that she succeeds in reinventing and making the song like it was her very own. And the video is brilliant as well. It's a must-see!
    czcams.com/video/jTu8ko7WC1c/video.html
Someone below also mentioned the Nordic singer Maria Franz... she is phenomenal as well. Early in her career, she emulated the quirkiness of Bjork in her Nordic progressive rock band called Euzen and then evolved and matured into a spectacular performer with her latest tribal Nordic folk band known as Heilung. In fact, Eivør and Heilung are touring together right this moment. They are playing at Red Rocks Colorado in 2 days. I sure wish I could go!!! Heilung evokes the earthy and spiritual sounds of the past and call their music 'amplified history'. Their song 'Anoana' is a vocal and visual stunner.. simply gorgeous. I highly recommend you analyze this one! czcams.com/video/SVbc_Fwbt50/video.html

I am thinking someone should do a remake of the musical Rose Marie (the one with Indian Love Call in it) whth this lady in the Janet McDonald role.

I love that you get the same vibes from her music as I do. I do enjoy listening to your thoughts on it and just walk in your shoes for that little moment if that makes sense. I guess that's the whole point of reaction videos right? What kind of disturbed me a little bit was "the Nordic Kate Bush". I mean idk, does the world really needs a Nordic or whatever else version of someone? I think I totally get that you mean it probably more in a professional manner, as an example to point out that Kate Bush had a similar approach right? But still, I really don't feel like anybody deserves to be categorized as "just" a version of somebody else no matter the good intention behind it. To me it sounds wrong. Just my 2 cents and you appear as such a nice person to me that I felt like I want to share.

Kate Bush was a good singer but not that good so I think the comparison is unfair.

Kate Bush has a style but polished and studio sterile, Eivor is humanistic and accessible and her song writing and instrumental mastery set her apart
