Creating & Maintaining Locs / Utilizing Textures

  • Targeting hair types today. I wanted to hone in on clients that are type “2a-3b(ish)
Obviously, with hairdressing training, we naturally look at porosity, density, and texture all together.
For some locticians, these concepts may not have been taught in training to work on locs 🤷‍♀️
Which is why I want to touch on a few of the major things I’m looking at when natural locs come in as a client, and more importantly, a new journey comes in and they have naturally curly hair. The hair follicle is set up differently to begin with, so parting with a comb tends to be difficult. We’re wanting lower manipulation of the hair strands the curlier the hair is. That doesn’t mean “make a loose loc”
It means getting the most impact with least amount of passes with your crochet hook when building.
Remember, no matter how “instant loc” we are making happen, that hair, and that loc, still have to mature, just like any other loc. It still takes that time for the locs to swell and contact numerous times to completely form a mature loc. so we’re just kinda “guiding” The hairs to weave themselves over time🥰
With curlier hair, this hair is more prone to be dry hair. The strand generally has thick and thin spots under a micro scope, so naturally those thin parts are going to be more brittle and dry. Which, if the hair is more fine (smaller hair strand) then by proxy, would be more brittle than hair strands that are more course (thicker hair)
So I like to pay attention to what the hair wants to do.
Same as cutting curly hair. Understanding it.
Flat ironing and cutting a curly haired client (unless they wear their hair this way every day) is literally cutting and pasting people into one way. And everyone in the room is an individual with their own skin and hair and follicles and growth patterns.
So working with the canvas in front of me has always been my approach 🤷‍♀️
So with locs, it’s the same idea. Straight and wavy hair will want more manipulation of the hair strands, and move into less manipulation as the curl pattern is more pronounced. Getting into coils where the hair is much more brittle (do to the strand structure) there’s considerably “less manipulation” required for locs to be formed. And if there’s over-manipulation, can be extremely detrimental to the locs.
So where crochet artists (should be working with crochet) will be more in the 1a-3a range… and cautions as we get into the 3 range.
WE’RE NOT JUST THERE TO MAKE MONEY
(If you are, please check your lipstick. This is special, what we’re doing)
SO, GIVING EVERY CLIENT THE SAME THING, is not starting them on their journey. It’s giving them LEGO HAIR. Cut and paste.
Which, personally, I want each person to have the best journey they can🥰 in the way they want. Not come to me every 6 weeks forever because I said that’s what’s best. What if it’s not? Then I feel like that’s just selling something that’s not necessary FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL.
Yes, hairdressers are trained to sell product.
When we really should be taught how to take care of each hair type best. Then, if there’s a product that might help them, show them why it helps and what it’s doing to their hair.
Not just “it’s shiny, you love it!” Bullshit.
As a curly hair specialist in hairdressing, I’ve come to teach my clients everything natural WAYYY before they get into product. MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THEY’RE OWN NATURE.
    We do. We’re taught.
So pass that on to your clients with locs, so they understand what they need or don’t need.
Simple things like, straight hair holds sebum more than curly hair will. So it needs more cleansing to combat buildup. 🤷‍♀️
    Eh
    That’s enough for now.
We’ll get into all those things later.
For now, here’s this little gem of a small thing that created HUGE impact for your careers, as well as for you at home maintenance and locs care taking folks as well 🥰

Hi Im from UK. I started my journey 1 Yr ago have wavy Caucasian hair. So appreciate your detailed explanations. Shame u not in UK.
However I do find the background music a distraction when trying to listen to what you are saying. It is a bit loud in comparison to your voice.
Keeps up great info. Thank you 👍👌

Hi! I’m glad you are enjoying it! And truly appreciate the feedback. This is all a brand new medium of art for me (filming and editing, any of it) and I play and write music, so I put it all together trying to figure out what works. I’ve found that simple guitar works way better, and I’ve learned since that my ears don’t differentiate well. Especially when there’s music and talking at the same time. So I’ve learned to bring my background music down lower than I think is good… I most likely still need to bring it down a bit though. Let me know what you think of the latest video (music to voice) if it’s better?

Thank you for replying. I will watch your other videos.
I will say this - in my opinion I think you give the most detailed informative tutorial on starting dreadlocks, maintainence etc especially for Caucasians.
      THANK YOU 👍👌

Where does one find those lovely little diagrams you have?

Diagram? If there’s something that formal that I utilized as a prop, its most likely just a general search and screenshot of there things that came up.
Also, anything I talk about, I’m guessing can be found directly in the Milady books from Cosmetology school🤷‍♀️ cuz that’s the only where I studied science of hair first.
And I honestly didn’t think I paid great attention then either🤣

I’m assuming that it would be the cosmetology manual ☺️
