- The Future of Kidney Transplants: The Potential of Pig Organs
2023 was a really big year for advancements in kidney transplantation and today we are going to discuss something that may sound wild to you - pig kidneys in humans.
This leads to a lot of questions that this week's video is going to cover:
How would a pig kidney even work in the human body?
Why pigs?
If you have kidney disease, would you accept a pig kidney to get off dialysis?
The United States needs more kidneys. There were over 90,000 people on the kidney transplant list in 2023 and only 15,927 kidney transplants were done that year. Every year thousands more are added to that list, so scientists have been hard at work to find other solutions. Watch this video to find out more and about the exciting trials done at NYU Langone Health and the University of Birmingham.

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”. The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way.
I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and CZcams sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 CZcams subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

My sister had lifesaving heart surgery 54 years ago. It was a miracle as she was the youngest patient to get a pig’s artery and survived 40 years before it had to be replaced.
This is an amazing story about this subject @23strath - thank you so much for sharing.
incredible. and there was no rejection.
@@BobRooney290 No, the first replacement happened at 15, it lasted until she was about 45. Now sadly, at 63 she is in heart failure with limited time left. As I reflect back to the original replacement, I don’t remember her taking any medication, rejection or otherwise.
Thank you to Mr Slayman for being the first test. Hopefully medicine can advance this research and make it a reality for those who need a kidney, hand raised.
Dr. Shusterman, kudos to you for creating this extremely informational video. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for this important and informative discussion, so well explained.
Thank you so much @haroldwood1394
They did it again just last month with a living breathing walking human. . Hopefully this is common soon. Also, it would be trivially easy to make all pig donations, live donations, further increasing viability. Knowing I have a transplant in my hopefully distant future from PKD there is certainly an appeal knowing I will get a healthy, young organ. I’ll probably live longer.
Another interesting video. People have animal heart valves. It all depends on how desperate you are. If you have been on dialysis a long time or are unwell on HD then some people would risk a pig kidney as they risk having organs from people who had cancer or AiDS. Thank you for the informative video.
Thanks so much for this thoughtful comment. This is why I wanted to make this video because it is such an interesting topic.
Doctor transplant pigs trips to my grandpa 70 yrs ago in Mexico. And he live a perfect life after that.
Thank you for watching and sharing @ramiroavila8397 . And that is so great to hear!
My dad is a double kidney transplant patient. After a novel virus attacked his kidneys in the 80s (he was born in 1962) he was given 6 months until his kidneys failed. He made the UK news for being one of the first people to get a kidney transplant in a hospital in Liverpool. He got this donation from his mum and he kept it going until 2007 when it failed and he was donated a second transplant from a man who died in a motorcycle crash. In 2021 he had 3 strokes in the space of a week and survived but lost kidney function again. He’s been on dialysis ever since and I know he’d absolutely prefer a pig kidney over having to dialyse even only twice per week which is much less than some people need to. My parents both live in Australia now and are in their early 60s like the gentleman from the story. I wonder if you know of any clinical studies going on in Australia relating to this? I think my dad would be a keen candidate for research in this field. Thanks for the video and all the best!
they just did one in usa, couple months ago I hear the man went home and so far so good
@@fortniteprogamer3057and he is dead
That good news, life saver for some people. But I have question, same thing happened to pig heart transplant recently that patient died. Whether Dr / Scientist able to find RCA ?
What ever works is good with me .
My concern would be I would be rolling around in mud after the transplant.
right!!!! would you start to snort 🤣🐽

🤣thank you for watching and giving me a laugh today.
Were any postmortem analyses done on the patient who had a heart transplant from a genetically modified pig? He only lived for six weeks, though. Didn't see a whole lot of info coming out after his demise.
It's the very best hope we have aside from increasing the donor pool, somehow. Artificial kidneys are another viable solution, but the filtering mechanism is not an easy system to reproduce artifically unless you simply miniaturise dialysis.
Hope AI can transform the life of a dialysis patients.
It will be interesting to see more about the studies in that @shekarraju6395 - thanks so much for watching and commenting.
I hoop az soon az possibel
What about age? If you're 76, can you still do this?
I need one ASAP
Will that "invisibility cloak" measure mean they don't have to take anti-rejection meds?
It is still a foreign kidney just like it would be for a human. I think they would still be on the meds just to be on the safe side.
looks like the first ever transplant failed. the patient died today. there is another one, Lisa Pisano. any updates on her?
She is recovering... Surgery went well. I know Lisa Pisano and her husband personally for years . They are good people. I am so happy to know that she was able to be saved .
I am on stage 3a ckd🥺
Be proactive , don't wait until you're in stage 4. Ask family member if someone will be willing to donateand have them tested for donor match.
Stinging nettle seed tea, 2X a day then work up 3x day give it time it’s known to take people off dialysis and prevent dialysis
*whelp.*
Omg
Im muslim, and ill sign up for pig kidney if i ever need it, hopefully not 😊, i believe islamic teaching is all about protecting humans lives and well being in any cost ❤️, in the Quran our glorious God and creator Allah said: who ever saved a one person life as if he saved all humans lives , and who ever killed one human life as if he killed all humans
Apparently it didn’t work…1st guy just died!
Now a pork kidney is your friend! That’s right, if you are on the transplant list, a pork kidney will save your life! --Chris Rock edited .
do you think longevity would be an issue? - i think pigs only live 10-20 years.
Great question @kat2878 - I think we will have to wait on some of the studies on that.
You obviously don't have kidney disease but ur comment IS funny.
I certainly hope not. We do so much harm to animals already.
just stop eating bacon or pork! problem solved !
@@jross8086 well that's so comforting because i'm vegan...🙄
good for you, i guess all the people that have PIG valves implanted in their hearts should refuse heart valve replacement then ! because you are vegan? go censor the library books or something.
The rest of the animal can be used for bacon
I'd rather die than get a pigs kidney or any other bodies kidneys..
I don’t agree with this experiment
good then don't get one if your kidneys fail ! who cares what you think-what it was you or a family member that would die without it?
Right. Because pigs are waaay more important than humans. I can just see you rejecting a pig kidney for your child if it was their best chance at life. Cuz you wouldn't want to sacrifice the pig for your child, right? 😂
@@jross8086 why so aggressive
It is a fascinating and divisive subject @TheGbass87 - that is why I wanted to make this video, as everyone will have varying opinions on the topic.
