Whiskey Sour - A Brief History: The whiskey sour was first seen in print in Jerry Thomas’ 1862 book The Bartender’s Guide (amzn.to/2BHARXW) but of course it had been around some time before Jerry’s book. Jerry’s recipe called for a wine glass of bourbon or rye, the juice of half a lemon and a large teaspoon of powdered white sugar dissolved in sparkling water. It was served in a claret glass and garnished with berries. The drink evolved and the egg white component was added later but is often referred to as optional.

Who says it’s the Best Whiskey Sour Recipe?
bit.ly/best-whiskey-sour
PunchDrink.com sought out the Ultimate Whiskey Sour recipe by inviting 17 of America’s best bartenders to submit their finest recipe for the Whiskey Sour-then blind-tasted them all to find the best of the best.
Nearly half of the drinks submitted were served on the rocks, and many called for the addition of an egg white.
The top 3 whiskey sour recipes shared several common attributes; they called for 60ml (2 ounces) of whiskey and made use of egg white for added texture. The top spot was taken out with a rye whiskey based sour that had the unorthodox addition of orange juice whilst my personal favourite took out the Bronze.
WHISKEY SOUR #3 (by Neal Bodenheimer) - bit.ly/whiskey-sour-03
Neal's recipe is my personal favourite of the 3 finalists. Using a Bourbon Whiskey base makes it the sweeter of the 3 but boasts fragrant aromas from the mist of Angostura bitters which finishes off the drink nicely.
INGREDIENTS
- 60ml Evan Williams Single Barrel Bourbon (2 oz)
- 22.5ml Lemon Juice (0.75 oz)
- 22.5ml 1:1 Simple Syrup (0.75 oz)
- 15ml Egg White (0.5 oz)
- 1 Spray of Angostura bitters
WHISKEY SOUR #2 (by Erik Adkins) - bit.ly/whiskey-sour-02
Erik's recipe is slightly more acidic than the other 3 finalists, I felt that the balance was slightly off (personally). The recipe calls for a Bourbon Whiskey and is close to what would be referred to as a traditional Whiskey Sour.
INGREDIENTS
- 60ml Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon (2 oz)
- 22.5ml Lemon Juice (0.75 oz)
- 15ml 1:1 Simple Syrup (0.5 oz)
- 15ml Egg White (0.5 oz)
WHISKEY SOUR #1 (by Dan Sabo) - bit.ly/whiskey-sour-01
Dan's was a very close 2nd place in my books. It calls for a 100 proof Rye Whiskey along with higher portions of citrus and sweetener to retain balance of strong, sweet and sour. The unorthodox yet welcome addition of a small amount of orange juice contributed a sweet, softer acidic component.
INGREDIENTS
- 60ml Rittenhouse Rye 100 Proof (2 oz)
- 30ml Lemon Juice (1 oz)
- 15ml 2:1 Rich Simple Syrup (0.5 oz)
- 15ml Orange Juice (0.5 oz)
- 15ml Egg White (0.5 oz)

Perfect timing. I was looking for a cocktail book the other day.
Now I just hope shipping over to Germany won't be too expensive
Hey Steve, I noticed that your video skips right at the end of the 2nd and cuts back in after you’ve already started the 3rd….
lol theres something about a broad shouldered austrailian bearded man going “i quite like it, it’s a bit dainty” 😂
Exactly what I was thinking

The way he shakes the mixer and gives a glanceing smile is uncumfortably funny.

You aren't as presentation driven as some other CZcams mixologists, but you have a way of presenting your work cleanly, directly, and to the point. Even a novice could learn easily from you, and that counts for a lot. My wife thinks you are adorable, and the drinks you make make me want to taste them. All in all I really enjoy your show. Good on ya, bud.
I think it's because he's clearly a real bartender.
I don't think most of the people here on CZcams have ever worked in a bar/restaurant.
Is your wife single?
@@dung_nuggets how hard was it to accept that you are going to die alone?
I'm only asking because I will never know the pain you feel of being so absolutely flawed that no one would be moved by my death like people will be about yours.
I'm actually drunk after a long week of work and my wife ordered me a pizza and is not wearing a bra tonight... so you can go ahead and reply whatever you think is "kewl"... I'll be too busy to reply.
I liked the sly smile when he was shaking the drinks. Made it look like he was up to something!
Presentation is important. But for CZcams tutorials, getting the basics should be first priority. Perhaps there could be other videos on presentation to fine tune the drink a little more
You should shoot whiskey between drinks to clean the pallet.

Good job. Whisky is a brain food
I really like it that you go straight to the mixing and less nonsense. Best bartending channel.
Steve gave it the nod!! I love the whiskey sour. you have just given me three recipes to try this weekend. Thank you!!
Really like the format of comparing several recipes. You should do more of these!
I've only just started working behind the bar and watching your videos make me smile, easy to follow recipes and i love them. Thanks so much!
Discovered you 2 days ago and already tried 4 new cocktails, having two of each for thorough evaluation purposes. Out of Rye at the moment, so tried #3 and love it.
I like the relaxed vibe of the video, somehow it's difficult to find these kinds of video's where the people and editing are not over excited the whole time.
I'm just starting to learn mixology.. I'm finding these videos not only entertaining but very informative. I can't wait to get home ( I drive a truck) and try these recipes out! Thanks
I’ve made many of my sour drinks like this for years - the egg, lemon juice, ss, bitters combo. Just makes for smooth, enjoyable sipping. Thank you, Steve! Love the vids.
My Mother used to love whiskey sours and I really need to make these in her honor. Also she would have loved you Steve.
I absolutely love watching the evolution of your videos. I've seen every single one so far and I love the addition of the close-up, slow motion shots. Also truly digging the cool clap transition. Answering questions was also something I wished you did in other videos, and you've done it in this one. You are one of my absolute favorite people not only on CZcams, but on the internet. My girlfriend and I love trying out your recipes. Please keep it up!!
Editing my initial comment: the #1 recipe is awesome. I had to try it a few times before my palate got used to it. I add 2 dashes of Fee Brothers Orange Bitters when serving with a ball of ice. Thank you for posting and much love from Texas.
Whiskey Sour is my favorite drink! Mine have always been pretty much identical to Erik Adkins' (I happen to like the acidity).
Also, my one-year thinks the sound of the shaker is hysterical, and she cracks a big smile every time she hears you start mixing a drink in the videos!
Steve, thank you for being the bartender you are. I loved your exhibit of the whiskey sours. It's one of my favorites. This is one of the easiest, and most tasty cocktails and it really is about preference, but I do like the angostura touch. It puts a nice mature finish to this cocktail.
Welcome Davon! I really liked the ango spray instead of my usual dashes..
I’m not sure if i consider it one of the easiest cocktails since it does involve prep work or preparation of lemon juice and egg. To me the Martini, Old Fashioned, Gin and Tonic would be considered easy to make since it requires no preparation of food ingredients
Literally the day before watching this video, made version one but with the exact rye whisky from version 3. As you thought would be the case, it is incredible and will likely be my new standard! All the sweetness and aromatics of the first, but with the extra punch and underlying spice of the rye. Great video. Thanks for sharing!
thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience steve, your passion for finding the best is admirable!
Came back here to say, I came across this vid about a year ago. I made the #1 sour for all my guests last Easter. I used Buffalo Trace and because of that, I reduced my lemon juice to 3/4 ounce, and just had regular simple syrup on hand. Didn’t change that amount.
Every single person that had one LOVED it. One person said the the Whiskey Sour was always their drink of choice and was skeptical, but was quickly convinced.
Nice work.
Stocking up for this weekend again.
Knob Creek Rye is a treat on its own. I'll have to try the third one because the flavor profile sounds to be wider and invigorating.
You just seem so friendly like I know I'd be getting drunk and tipping heavy at whatever bar you work at
Haha, thanks Shiloh!
I love the fact you describe your measurements both in ml and ounces thank you Steve
One of my favourites! I recently used your rum and tequila recipes for my birthday so thanks Steve!
Just watched your video for the first time , you come across really friendly and will be following more . cheers, very informative
Thanks for the recipes steve. I’ve never bartended before, but as a life long hard drinker, I’ve become a connoisseur of sorts, and those are some damn fine whisky sours.
i've been waiting for this video!! one of the best variation i had used a mix of 2 types of syrup (i forgot), and grated nutmeg instead of bitters.
I am the individual who does not enjoy whiskey spirits, but after trying these recipes you have certainly changed my mind.
Recently pulled off one of the recipes you went over recently and got some serious compliments. So thank you
Most welcome! What did you make?
Ulises Medina same
Did you use the word recently twice in 1 sentence?
@@Narrow_Gate_Forge Grammatically correct, but a stylistic faux pas.
I’ve been making the first recipe since I watched this video. Never had a whiskey sour before watching and I absolutely love them now. Normally a gin and tonic guy, I do love a good old fashion, but this whiskey sour is so delicious. Thanks for the video! Cheers!
Welcome! Glad you enjoyed the vid (and the sour!)..
Ooo my fave! Getting my first get together post lockdown on Saturday and I CANNOT wait to make them. I was stuck for something different to make, so thank you for the idea 😁 Sending well wishes from Scotland 🏴🤟😁
Steve, thank you for helping me with the cocktails that entertain my family during the holidays. Happy New Year! Cheers old boy.
Rye version for me! Just had one a few minutes ago and it really was a game changer: love the kick of the Knob Creek 👍🏻
I have always made following WHISKEY SOUR #3 recipe. So perfect.
Same here! 🙌
I am also a bartender and I just love how you respect the drinks and make it either.. ‘m ur regualr follower.. Go on buddy
Whiskey sour is still my favorite drink. I have never made one at home. I always thought it was More complicated than this. Thank you so much.
Great video Steve, as always! Number 1 has been my go-to recipe and it's exactly how I do it too, except for putting the angostura bitters dashes in the foam instead of spraying it. I usually make it with Maker's Mark but would like to experiment with other bourbons and whiskies. Now I want to go to the kitchen and make myself one!
Using Four Roses makes a damn good whiskey sour. 100% "crushable", as he says.
I’ve been adding a touch of fresh OJ to my sours and I can tell you that it works magic! I also prefer Ryes. Try Dry Fly wheat whiskey with some rhubarb syrup. Heaven!
I've always used a touch of fresh OJ in my W. Sour as well. Glad to see I'm not the only one! Cheers!
I’m addicted to whiskey sours which just happened recently. Normally I’m a straight whiskey type of girl. Just purchased the cherry garnish and I’ll be making fresh lemon and orange juice this week! Thank you for your awesome content!
Stunning content as always my man, I'm really motivated to start bartending myself and learn about it, thanks and never quit the midshake smile!
Hi Steve! For #3, the classic one you preferred. When adding the simple syrup, add a teaspoon of the cherry syrup from the Luxardo cherries. That hint of cherry in there adds a nice layer of complexity 😁
just did that and i loved it!!
Just found this video. First cocktail is bloody amazing. I’m in love
Love that smile. I've never had a whisky sour and you make them look so good. Will definitely try.
"That one's very crushable." Proceeds to crush all three. Love it!
My work is tough..
Steve the Bartender it’s the Lord’s work
Hah! You thought I stopped? Im still commenting until Steve's wife makes a cocktail vlog (Maybe for 400K subs?) Number 4.
Fantastic testing.
I love your mid-shake smile. I liked the one with the Knob Rye whisky. I agree the flavors are more complex.
Made the first one but put in 50% alc rye right off the bat as thats my go to for a cocktail. It was amazing! Thanks for helping me master this cocktail!!
For the whiskey sour #3, the original bourbon, Evan Williams single barrel, has a salty peanut taste to me. I have never made a whiskey sour with it but I would think it would add some unique notes to it. I usually use that bourbon for a black walnut old fashioned. It is one of the most interesting bourbons I've had and it is very affordable.
As a fairly new bartender, I like to put grapefruit bitters in mine. Combining citrus and citrus just seems like a safe bet (I’ve got a history of going too hard on the angostura bitters).
great show , well done. really enjoyed your presentation !
Loved your dilemma choosing between the 2 sours!
Definitely one of my favorites!! Love all the different takes on the Whiskey Sour Steve! :) Great job!
Thanks mate! What’s your go to whiskey sour recipe?
@@StevetheBartender_ It's pretty much identical to your recipe for the Neal Bodenheimer Version. I like it with an ovenproof Bourbon like Old Grand-dad bib. Served up in a coupe or over a large ice cube on a hot day! 😌 (My Happy place!) lol
Steve! I highly highly highly recommend you try swapping in Suntory Whisky Toki! Game changer for all sours.
My go to drink! Love sitting down at the bar with a good Whiskey Sour and enjoying the night. 🥃😎
I have just made the orange 🍊 one and it is just like drinking paradise!!! I am sooo glad you shared this! However the people that I live with will not toutch it because of the egg white. They don't know what they are missing!
Simple syrup
Egg white
Two lemon 🍋 juced
Lemon rind, grated
Juce of an orange 🍊 with grated rind
Shot of Famous Grouse whiskey
Two glace 🍒 cherry
Blitzed in a blender and poured over a giant whiskey ice cube.
It filled a whole mason jar and absolutely delicious, never ever skip the egg white.
Steve you should do a uni or high school themed episode with less equipment and uni style drinks
Hey Steve, you're doing a great job with these videos!!! I'm from New Orleans and Cure is a outstanding cocktail bar. I'll be trying out the three versions this weekend and report back. I like the addition of the bitters but t I want to see what the orange juice does to the balance. Cheers!
You never reported back. Which did you prefer?
The first one you did….WOW!!!! It was so perfect and balanced!!! I made it with Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Let me say, perfection!!!
Just made #3. It was very nice. I'm not a big whiskey drinker and never done bitters - so many flavors. This definitely goes into the rotation.
My favorite version goes like 60 mL scotch, 30 mL lemon and 22.5 mL syrup along with half an egg's white. Served in a chilled coupe with no ice, dash of Angostura bitters on top of the foam.
Rim with lemon peel and discard if I really want to impress, draw through bitter drops using a toothpick like cappucino art for overkill :) Always love your videos, cheers!
Something a little peaty? I feel like a Scotch Whisky Sour now!
Penicillin using Monkey Shoulder for the main and Black Bottle for the float. It's got to be my favorite cocktail at the moment
How its even possible, I was just sitting outside, thinking about whiskey sour and wanted to check if you have any videos with it.
Thanks!
No way! How's the timing!! I'm keen to hear which recipe you prefer 👍
I like to add a couple of dashes of chocolate bitters into a whiskey sour
@@StevetheBartender_ to be honest, the first in the video, 3rd on the list, is the one I liked the best!
Thanks again for the video!
Fantastic video! My son loves whiskey sours, and will be arriving home in a few hours from an an amazing extended stay in Japan. Perfect timing, and instant subscription.
Thank you so much! Had never done a whiskey sour in my whole life and went for the first recipy and WOW! I was amazed and got lots of compliments! I really like that the recipe tells to shake the egg white and the lemon first, as i HATE egg smell and I guess this step really kills it. Wonderful drink! Can be better as I learn to make it more foamy as in the video, but the taste and smell was perfect! :D
My love for whiskey sours dictates that I give you a 👍 before even watching the video. I'll need to drink them all. For science. 🍋🥃👍
I like the egg white thing, a little protein. I've been wanting to make my drinking as healthy as possible for awile. haha
🤣🤣👏👏
The protein makes it a great post workout drink! Might have to have a few to make it worthwhile though.
I just started learning making cocktails at home. Your videos are very impressive. Love it!
I haven’t got the cash to be buying so many different spirits to make these, so made 1 & 3 using Makers Mark…and the No.1 is definitely (in my opinion) the nicest! Thanks Steve for a great video, so easy to follow and great tasting! Keep up the great work pal!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Love whiskey sours and have been experimenting recently. 2 oz Jim Beam, between .5 and .75 oz simple syrup, .75 oz half lime half lemon juice, fresh squeezed of course. Going to have to try adding bitters though. I like mine sour, my friends like the sweet variety. Curious what others think.
jim beam is a horrible choice for whiskey sour imho
Ngl I came to say the same thing , I mean Jim Beam, what are you , a crackhead?
2020 gets to all of us... even Steve missed his smile on the first shake
This guy's videos are all over the place, but I like that he isn't bothered by looking and sounding perfect, rather about teaching people about cocktails. Love it
Lol, thank you.. are you referring to my style, the way it’s filmed, etc.?
I really enjoy your videos. From one Bartender to another.
cheers xx
I still have to finish the video, but I wanted to comment on something Steve said.
I always had a whiskey sour served up and actually I do not like when it's served on the rocks. The presence of the ice and the dilution (even if it's slow eh...) break down the foam quicker and the texture is gone pretty soon.
Just a preference, not saying that the other method is wrong :)
I must admit I did like the fact that the foam doesn’t dissipate like when it is served on ice.. I just didn’t like that particular ratio in the 2nd recipe served up.. will definitely be trying the other two in a coupe next time 👌
I always serve mine up in a coup. But I also ad a dash of bitters in the mix, and a few drops on top of the foam as decoration.
Yeah, I always do mine in a coupe, or one of those stemless martini type glasses when I'm feeling less fancy.
I'm a simple man, I just put the whiskey in a glass, add 1 slice each of lemon lime and orange & fill with ginger ale. Yummy 😋
Thank you . Will try one of these this weekend, not sure which one though. Both sound amazing!
Mate, thanks for this video. I've mixed quite a lot of whiskey sours and they all were alright but this is just phenomenal!
Woah... Someone's been upping their editing game. Hehe ;D
The 1st one is my favourite, just so well balanced.
Tried all 3 I prefer the sweeter one, just started a home bar and love watching the channel Steve you've got a great personality that makes the channel fun and educational keep up the Good work and thank you
More sour drinks, maybe time for a Pisco Sour!
You had me at "extremely crushable whiskey sour recipe."
Heard it and instantly said "Sold".
This totally went down a treat! it will definitely be a staple for us now! Thanks Steve
IIRC, the Jameson Bow Street distillery serves their sours (which are amazing, BTW, and they have several flavor-enhanced ones, like raspberry, that my wife loved) in a coupe glass.
Great vid, BTW.
Just made this following the 3rd place recipe, but I used Auchentoshan, a very maple/brown sugary whiskey and I can say with ease, I’m getting pretty wrecked on them. 🤣
Haha, sounds tasty!!
Wait...WHAT?! NO SKAKE AND SMILE ON THE FIRST ONE! NOOOOOO! 😭😭😭😭
I've made a whiskey sour at home and I used a locally available lemon which gives a difference taste and I love it.
Loved the recipes and presentation, comments et. al. I made #1 (Dan Sabo) but used Woodford Reserve. The drink was very smooth and tasty. I'll have to try it with Rittenhouse Rye. Also, need to try the other recipes. Thanks, Steve!
Love the part where I’m trying to make a whiskey sour and this man says “secret sauce”
This top 3 is missing the GOAT: The Ardbeg Sour!
Do you split the base with Ardberg?
Steve the Bartender no. But I am not very sensitive to peat ;)
It adds a lovely earthiness and the peat comes rolling in as an after taste. I just love it. But it jacks up the price of the cocktail a bit 😅.
60 mL Ardbeg, 20 mL simple sirup, 20 mL lemon juice
@@baustard I was wondering if a peaty whiskey would go with this cocktail :) Wanna try it
One word. Awesome! Man, youre awesome. Bartending skills awesome, teaching awesome, commenting awesome...
@@baustard I recently fell in love with ardbeg. My go to drink is a WT101 old fashioned, but hot damn does an ardbeg sour sound dope.
I only recently got into cocktail making (used to be almost exclusively a wine and beer drinker) and I think the Whiskey Sour might be my drink. I'm going to be trying all of these for sure!
My friend and I are frequently looking to expand our knowledge of spirits by mixing cocktails together, and I just wanted to let you know that we both love your videos and recipes so thanks mate!
You’re both welcome! Glad you’re both enjoying the vids :-)
I was hoping 3 whiskey sours meant 6 mid-shake smiles...

Thanks huub, I’m flattered 😬

Thank you soooo much for walking me through the process and subtleties !!! I feel like I can’t get it wrong now
Most welcome Jorge!!
Thanks Steve for sharing! Tried the first receive, it was great!
Whiskey sours are my favorite drink of choice. Watching you drink these just made me want to make one. I prefer the sweeter version so I would say the first one you made would be ideal.
My favorite drink! Excited to try that last recipe!
