I have always loved POTA especially the first films,
The gorillas used to scare the hell out of me as a five year old child...

I would not call it a “masterpiece.” My parents showed me this when I was in grade school and it was terrible. Many years later, it is still bad. The ending was lazy and there is no story at all. There is no plot. Nothing happens. Plot: Heston blows up the earth. That is just lazy writing.

The 1968 film is still the best but Beneath is a decent sequel.

    • @kevincobble934

Sorry, but how is BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES “a decent sequel”? The ending is very dumb and nothing of any consequence happens. This is a very good example of when the writers do not know what they are doing. Their pitch is have Taylor blow up the planet. Why not have the astronaut (obvious Heston stand-in) escape with Taylor (but in a limited role since Heston did not want to come back) and go back to Earth in the 1960s?

For me, the sequel rises very close to the level of the original. The cast members portraying the mutant prefects, headed by Jeff Corey and Paul Richards really elevates the film.

    • @chasehedges6775

IKR. It definitely does come close to the original’s level.

@@chasehedges6775 No, it doesn’t. Where’s the big reveal? There is none. The best these writers came up with is just blow up the planet with *one nuke*. That’s not even possible. Plus, the mutant sound effects were so cheesy.

@@chasehedges6775 I love Leonard Rosenmann’s atonal, dissonant music score as well, a worthy follow up to Jerry Goldsmith’s sublime and timeless original.

It is kind of retro, right? Is the cheesy voice over really necessary?

Fun fact Charlton Heston played an ape in Tim Burton's version of Planet of the Apes. Actually he played Tim Roth's character's father.

I loved it because I was 10 years old. But the switcheroo they did with Heston was weird because he didn't want to do sequel. ( But as kid I did not realize just as happened when I saw MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and George Lazenby played James Bond!! ) Ending upsetting but it did make for a wonderful MIND F**K when ESCAPE PLANET APES came out!! The new films are great because they will explore other areas of Future and may tie back in 1968 film! CGI Charlton Heston??????
