The best part about the Tim Burton PotA movie was that EVERY critic referred to it as "Marky Mark and the Monkey Bunch" which supposedly drove Mark Wahlberg INSANE.

The 2011 POTA type have been really inferior. The great films were the first 5 and the 2001 version was just good.

I just love the "Ape Lincoln" joke.... he could have crashed everywhere but Tim Burton chose the Abraham Lincoln memorium
My take away from that moment was that the protagonist went into the future and found a civilization founded by apes with an Ape America. I don't know why OP suggests the villain did time travel.

I’ve always loved Zira and Cornelius. They’re funny, intelligent, snarky and extremely devoted to their friends, each other, their work and doing the right thing. I was absolutely devastated at the end of Escape.

As much as the new trilogy is superior in a lot of ways (especially on effects and makeup), and I did really like them....they lack the "fun" quality the originals had.
I would love to see Disney/Fox make a new TV series. Even just 6-10 episodes. That kind of thing is all the rage now.

Food for thought, the war for the planet of the apes shows off the fact that there’s some kind of virus that renders the humans incapable of speech, thus setting the stage for the originals. So the 2011 reboot trilogy was like a prequel to the older ones. Absolute genius on the part of the directors

Thats what I was thinking. The new trilogy is canonically first, followed by the old films which is probably an US test during the cold war, then the apes go back in time after humanity is basically extinct which would cause them to never exist in the future.
My theory is that: the reboot trilogy was how the origin of the planet of the apes really happened, the sequels of the original are how the timeline its not a circle but things will always repeat, even if not in the same way

Before the modern mechanics of sci-fi were fleshed out, older sci-fi fell more into the speculative fiction genre and the mechanics of tech and scientific theory were more creative devices than anything else. I honestly miss that
Anytime I need that sort of nostalgia I just watch a BBC sci-fi show/movie (even modern ones). Their budget has, historically, been so low they use more physical effects (costuming, makeup, sets, etc) than other broadcast networks.

same, i honestly don't gaf about all the boring the specs.. . all we need to know is corny and zira hotwired taylor's ship before earth went kablooey.. . we really don't need to spend half the movie explaining the how/where/when; all we need to know is they escaped the ape timeline and landed in 1971, it's really not that deep.
Modern sci-fi is as well, they're still usually just creative devices, they've just gotten better at hiding it though since Sci-Fi is now a more "serious" and less campy genre.
There are a couple of really cool references to the originals from the Andy Serkis Trilogy. What I find really cool about all of the Planet of the Apes movies is that you are constantly changing sides. That is, in any Planet of the Apes movie/series that was done right. You get to see the best and the worst of both sides face off against each other, and that's what makes these movies so unique and groundbreaking.
Best easter egg with a long payoff (hopefully next movie)
will be the Icarus launching in a newscast during "Rise".
The first film is almost a joke on the audience. Misanthrope leaves the planet to get away from people, ends up becoming humanity's last defender only to find out his first instinct was the right one.

I think Conquest is the hidden gem of the franchise. It has a very dark and nihilistic tone that could have only been achieved in the ‘70s.

Have you seen most media today? The amount of nihilism in our society today is through the roof. My generation's (Gen Z) humor, besides being vastly non-sequential, is very dark. We joke about many things you'd consider too dark to touch like 9/11 and School Shootings. Personally, I'm sick of all the pessimistic nihilism in media today with every dystopian film and book coming out. My generations punchline is seemingly stop existing rather than live another day in a society in decline.
Very few actually want to make the changes necessary to solve multi-generational issues and the consensus amongst us is a cheap "there's nothing we can do, why should we care" and constant anxiety of a doomed destiny we believe to be unavoidable.
It pisses me off beyond all belief that my generation is so pessimistic. It's been done and overhashed, and it's not a good attitude for making necessary changes. Nobody ever considers optimistic nihilism. It's not like in face of cutting all beliefs (religious, spiritual, political, etc) from our lives that we couldn't find the good in existence. That there is more meaning in life to be had if we understand there is no one true meaning. That we make meaning. No, instead, we decide to doom ourselves to a fate of multiple generations creation. Instead we decide to obsess over it in all are films and media. Sure, these things existed much longer before Gen Z, 1984 is a classic after all, but the dystopian genre has reached its peak here and now. 1984 in the 40s, Conquest in the 70s, Blade Runner and Heavy Metal (film) in the 80s, Tank Girl and Titan A.E. in the 90s.
Then you hit the 2000s and 2010s where the cliché pop cultural film is "Teenager lives in dystopian society, teenager rebels." I just described 20+ titles of books and movies that came out in the past 2 decades. And while they are objectively less realistic and in lower quality than say the Orwellian masterpiece that is 1984 or Huxley's Brave New World, you can notice the quantity of films and books geared towards teens and young adults that are dystopian in genre have increased to ridiculous proportions. And if that isn't enough to convince you, have you seen Star Trek lately?
Star Trek was a show that presented the best humanity could aspire to scientifically, culturally, and personally. And while past iterations certainly had dark elements like DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise, the central message was always 'not only are these things we can overcome, but we must overcome them, and we will.' We saw it in Bashir's conflicts with Section 31, and Enterprise's whole gimmick is going from a dark world closer to our own to the brighter future we see in the original and Next Gen. Turn on Star Trek now. It's no longer about optimism in the face of obstacle. It's been infected with the dystopian plague in media. The only thing that feels like Star Trek is Seth MacFarlane's, the creator of Family Guy, show The Orville and that's been canceled.
Gen Z is not a hopeful, forward looking generation. We're a generation that cowers into spiritualism and crystals as if it were somehow better than the toxic established religions, and we treat science like magic by sprinkling scientific sounding words into our vocabulary. I truly, fully hope, Gen Alpha, the kids being born right now, break free from the doom and gloom we've choked media with and break free from the millenia of belief that has infested us. It is time for a breath of fresh air, its time for a change.

I remember watching every single original planet of the apes in one day with my grandma. She lived six hours away so I didn’t see her much, I still think about it. We drove down to see every new planet of the ape movie on opening day with her. A odd tradition lol

I love how there's like 5 minutes dedicated to the time travel mechanics in Escape (they go back through the wormhole that Taylor came through, it's pretty simple) while there's a video on this channel about why Tenet's time travel is simple and makes perfect sense.
They sent an advanced space ship into a wormhole in 1968.

There was no wormhole in the original, they were simply traveling very near the speed of light.

Dr. Milo was truly among the smartest of the smartest apes. In the future Taylor traveled to apes didn't even think flight was possible yet Dr. Milo was able to repair a crashed spaceship.

War for the Planet of the Apes is my personal favorite. I wonder what Apes films will come after this? Caesers story is over but there could be more stories to tell? There’s a hint in Rise about a spaceship with a crew of four that is missing/lost. I believe it was a newspaper headline. Very little screen time.

If you didn’t know the Tim Burton version has the same ending as the novel these films were all based on.
Um, only sort of. The ending of the novel reveals that apes are the dominant species (even space-traveling) in the universe, but there's no Abe Lincoln or modern-day Washington DC. The novel is written by a Frenchman, after all! (His other big novel to be adapted as a Hollywood movie was Bridge Over the River Kwai).
That seems not truth at all since the original novel isn't even set on Earth. Check your sources people.

@@mikemack9701 the original end had them landing at what the crew thought and recognized as an airport outside Paris and when they opened the door they were greeted by apes in uniform. Sort of a reverse of the beginning of Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
Actually the the status of liberty wasn't broke down on the beach. The geographic of the earth changed so that statue is still sitting in it's exact spot... The ground elevated
No, it was destroyed in a nuclear war. Only 2000 years have passed on Earth between the space crew's departure and return in the first film, that isn't nearly enough time for NYC to get completely leveled and for the statue to get almost fully absorbed into the ground. The maniacs did, in fact, blow it up.

Practical effects are king. Watch the Heisei era of Godzilla films Godzilla 1985 (Godzilla Returns) to Godzilla vs Destroyah. I really hope Toho goes back to Suitimation to flex on Legendary's Godzilla films and really out-do the CGI.
The theory of the time travel for the first series tends to be that the main characters of the movies used a wormhole to time travel and it’s the same one in both cases and once they hit it it sends them back to earth to crash land at whatever time they end up at and the some that died while traveling weren’t fully sealed in their sleep pods so they aged rapidly even with that explanation it still doesn’t make sense that while they were hunting the humans the apes started and launched their space campaign and achieved success on their very first try appearently😂.

This is the planet of the apes retrospective I've been looking for. 10 out of 10 would watch again in 10 years.
I absolutely love this franchise my grandma has every single one on VHS and when I get sick and stay home form school i binge watch them and I get hate for it but no matter how much hate this series gets it will always hold a special place in my heart

The live-action and animated TV series that happened in the mid 70's also added greatly to the POTA lore...
I love that series. Have the DVD set and binge it once a year. A shame it didn't get at least one more,or even a full season.

I had known about the origional planet of the apes movies but had only seen the newer trilogy which is one of the best trilogies ever imo and I was so surprised at how good the first movie was it genuinely is an amazing movie
The new Apes films are technically still connected to the original, just some slight retcons in timing, but you see references to Taylor's mission in early part of Rise, and there's enough time for them to have sent Brent before Cesar's uprising, and the new timing of events makes the humans arrival to the future a bit more impactful as they left just before everything starts. Sure Escape is a bit harder to reconcile but this was the intention of the new films originally, and the new films Disney is backing seem to be continuing in this direction, rather than straight up remake the originals. Atleast, that's what was happening last I checked, though this may have changed.

@subsamadhi Yes they are, the newer films just take more realistic timing into account for the transition to full bipedalism and full speech, and even the originals before Conquest were seemingly accounting for such a gap, as the very first film is centuries from now, let alone the 70s which Escape occurs in.
The disease we see killing pets in Conquest is one descended from the virus in Rise, which we see develop to limit human speech after some time, which was implied by some books that take place after Battle to potentially be occurring though of course the end of Battle and future portions of the same books break the cyclical notion in favor of an optimistic future. But in essence, the movies from the 68' original to War are connected as a story about Franko's character's virus.
To get a proper understanding of order, you start with the Rise trilogy, that's where the virus is first made. Between War and the original, hundreds of years pass, apes get more human like, animals (except for horses) die off, humans go mute, and human mutants survive in the wastes.
The original two films occur, Cornelius, Zira, and Milo escape to the present time (while times of the present are different across the films Rise and Escape, this can boil down to due the present simply being different at times of production. Making Rise a period piece would have likely been jarring for a reboot, so 2012 was chosen over 1972. So the proper way to interpret these films is that they are supposed to be in the relative present, the exact dates are irrelevant. Taylor leaves from both 1972 and 2012; he leaves from the present time relative to the viewer.) the events playout to Battle and instead of looping back to the original, it leads to a future where apes and humans live as equals.
Despite the time travel, the line of events are surprisingly straight forward. The Apes in Ape City in the original exist because of Caesar and his apes. Time has simply passed.

@subsamadhi I wasn't really defending them as I was pointing out how they clearly line up with the original films. Perhaps if you had read my "novel" of a comment, which would likely take you an excruciating minute of your time, you'd understand what was being communicated.
The New Planet of the Apes can be interpreted as the Pre-Time Travel Origin of the Planet of the Apes, you just sorta have to imagine Taylor's ship got lost in the 60's or so. And the Time Travel caused Caesar to be born somewhat around half-century earlier.
The only disconnected one is the Tim Burton one, but you can sorta imagine that astronaut landed on some far region from when the other movies happened and that's it, it barely contradicts anything.
Like 3 years ago I became obsessed with this movie series and watched them all in the span of a couple days. I literally cannot remember ANYTHING that happens in them now and I don't know why
I remember walking up to my dad reading the back of a DVD or VHS with the original planet of the apes movie. The cover did not really interest me, I was holding some game my brother and I had selected. My dad on the other hand was smiling, telling us about how he used to watch this in Colombia when he was a kid.
Even though I remember being excited to play the game, I can't for the life of me remember which it was. But I do remember watching in awe, as a man realized that his crew mates were dead. I remember him making a paper airplane and trying to convince the apes to free him. I remember the scream when he finds Lady Liberty.
He got me into a lot of science fiction, I'm glad we shared a love for the genre.

I think Dawn gives a perfectly reasonable and well thought out explanation for how Apes may actually be able to come to power through the disease that spreads through the ALZ 113.
Fun fact: Andy Serkis originally started his journey learning about apes when Peter Jackson brought him in to do the motion capture for his remake of King Kong. Serkis wanted to go live with/around gorillas for a while to learn from them. The producers were TOTALLY against it, but he ended up going and doing it anyway, and it hugely influenced the movie even down to what kind of diet Kong would have.

Too young is like too old after all. Bravo for the work put in this video but there are some subjects that demand some cutting from one's own reality. Like stating preferences for a "Serkis' Cesar"... Back then, this other Cesat was as believable as the one you know cause he's been introduced to you in your tineline. In 30 years if another Cesar is played by AI or else, kids will say the Serkis Cesar was in no way believable. Same for Kikng Kong, Godzilla or King Ghidorah. The monsters of yesterday are truly comical now but they made me have nightmares anyway. And don't forget the TV series BTW.

My favourite Roddy McDowall Apes movie was in fact "Escape", as it truly IS a fish-out-of-water story, and I love those. The new trilogy is also great, too.
Hilariously spot on with my own feelings on the series, glad you dug into the originals. I love how solid the first four are on their own terms... Battle sucks. And so does the Burton hiccup. As for the the new trilogy, Rise is a fine set up. Dawn (the naming conception of this trilogy sucks, Dawn should come before Rise) is a revelation of acting realised through cgi with a solid story and plot... my only complaint is that they don't set up the mutants. Because War was heart wrenching and I feel could have succeeded with a Mutant subplot. It's hinted at, if only Woody had tore his fkng face off at the end of the movie to reveal they were all freaks, it really would have sealed the deal for me. Unfortunately it's a real dour flick all over.

I agree on Battle though. Mostly. I wouldn't say it sucked,exactly,but it is definitely my least favorite of the original 5. It has a 'made for tv' vibe to it.

I know that in Dawn, as I'm sure you caught (NOT sarcasmlol ) , they do reference the astronauts from the original movie via a news soundbite in the background. They can still bring it around to somehow tie in to the first series by having those characters figure in somehow.
It's obvious they're probably not including time travel or any of the overtly silly elements

Actor RODDY MCDOWELL was in all of these--from the very first one to "The Battle". Also, he was in the TV series, which had a short one as well! 👏🏽👏🏽
Actually, he was NOT in BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. Cornelius was played by another actor in that one. There WAS another actor in 4 of the original 5 films: Natalie Trundy, who was the wife of a producer, I think. She played a mutant in BENEATH, had the role of human-woman Dr. in ESCAPE, and played Caesar's ape wife in CONQUEST & BATTLE. (If anybody can prove she played an extra in the original, I'd love to know it!)

This was a fantastic trailer IMO, and will def go and watch the film when it comes out next Spring.

There is an animated series in the 70's and a live action TV show that they did turn into like 4 movies for syndication.
Something kinda sad about this franchise is that I never hear anything about it. It’s probably been years (since the trilogy came out probably) since I last heard about it. And the only one I’ve seen is the original.

They are filming a new "Planet of the Apes" movie. It will be called "Kingdom of The Planet of the Apes." It will be a direct sequel to this trilogy. Sadly, Andy Serkis won't be involved, although I'm curious to see what they do. The 10th "Planet of the Apes" movie is slated for release on May24th, 2024
It's directed by some guy from some YA adaptation, and it's being overseen by Disney. I LOVE Planet of the Apes, but I really hope I'm dead before this one ever gets to a theater.

The animated series is a different story for me. Although it is actually even closer to the book than any of the movies, in terms of how the Apes and humans interact, technology available,etc.
For some reason, I just didn't care for it.

This is the state of films, currently. CGI crap rules the day. Practical effects are almost unheard of outside of the horror genre. And people are conditioned to like CGI. 🤔
And CGI is like a cartoon. I hate it.

People arent conditioned to like CGI. People are conditioned to look good effects, most of which are CGI. Say what you want, but its way easier to make good cgi than good/convincing practical effects.

Ironically, the 3rd film was the most well received of the sequels at the time. The Caesar origin story. The 4th film was considered the shark jump. And the 5th was a cash grab, no one liked. The t.v. show was great though, beloved. The newer films... I love seeing my childhood being worshipped by later generations. It makes me feel like I grew up in a much more artistically rich period. But the films themselves aren't good nostalgia. I guess the second 1 is considered the best. I got crazy bored and walked out of the theater about midway through. I really wanted to be entertained but I guess you can't get that wonderment twice from the same material. No big deal. The 1st 4 films are friggin awesome high art dystopia 60's/70's style. And let's face it, since about '91, hasn't that been what nearly all the art/fashion/music has been chasing? But there's a severe problem with authenticity going on 30 years now. I'm pretty sure the youth is NOT supposed to embrace the art of their fathers. It's the height of artistic conservatism and it's bled Into EVERYTHING. Dull dull dull. Outside of the smart phone we haven't much to show for the passing time. Just sad. But at least I can remember.

@@MephProduction I don't agree. ESCAPE takes place in the early 1970s, and so naturally everything looks, feels and sounds like the early 1970s. Should it look like it's 2022?

The original five films are loaded with emotion, and Roddy McDowall is superior as the original Caesar (no CGI fakery required). You say "Andy Serkis gives a level of emotion to the character that has never been done before ", so are you sure you actually watched CONQUEST??
Andy serkis is just so good, and it helps that the technology is better. Both performances are amazing though.
Nothing out does the original...acting and makeup just outstanding. All the rest just do not compare, too much CGI, and the remake of the original the apes looked too human.

Actually the remake in 2001 was very good with Heston and Harrison in the cast. But the 2011 film was overly CGI and predictably awful.

I love how, since I have seen all of these movies recently, I know that alot of the jokes in this video are jokes. It truly is a chore to get through the original films, but worth it just to see where the story all goes.
Time warps are a re-occuring theme, in the 60s & 70s films (even in the Tim burton film) we have to assume Cornelious & Zera left the Earth (in Taylor's space ship, before the nuclear blast, then went through another warp arriving on modern day Earth, they were probably fleeing Dr Zeus & as Scientists would have been curious about the world Taylor described)

There is also the TV series, Roddy McDowell returns to star in this too. And, an animated Cartoon series. Both TV and Animation is from the era of the original. Not forgetting memorabilia, there was a collecter trading card set released for the original, plus usual action figures, etc
