You bad ass you…fantastic…I assume you are keeping up with the Petty Country release in June 2024. The Dolly Parton rendition of Southern Accent is a friggin tear jerker..he was a good human and gave all of us joy, thought and understanding that if you have a gift …you give it away. It doesn’t have to be super star music. It can just be something as simple as caring for someone else. Everyone thinks they have to be a media influencer. What a bunch of bullshit. Just being human and being decent is kind of a good gift to mankind these days. so imy ramble is done. Peace and blessings from Gail in Central Florida. April 2024 just a few months from the election. Oh my God bro we can do this. 💙

I've seen Tom Petty live twice now. When he started to play this song..the audience didn't give him a chance to sing...we all did it for him...after we all did the first verse he said "You're all gonna put me out of a job..." The crowd went nuts!! He just took it all in. It was awesome!!!! What better way to show your appreciation for someone's work then to know all the words and sing as loud as you can. He put his heart and soul into both concerts I saw him at.

I think, compared to most other successful music stars, let alone rock legends, Tom Petty was more grounded, more normal and really about his fans, at least to a level that didn't drive him insane. He basically never lost his identity. He had his eccentricities, but nothing too extreme. He is one of the musicians who takes it, as he should, as a flattering compliment when people sing his songs at his concerts, along with him. The true greats always loved this, because it was a dead give away that they had the audience eating it all up! I can't even imagine how much of a rush it must be to have all those fans screaming for what you do, in a good way. I once performed an important task, while being watched with great anticipation. Upon completion of the task and a successful restart, I had about 200 people clapping and cheering, because it just kept them in a job. I have performed rescues from burning buildings and lifted a burning station wagon off a child, while others pulled him out and I have done other things that earned praise from many. But they were all small scale things. To have a crowd like that, cheering for you, must be a RUSH! Terrifying, exhilarating, exciting and I expect, a few other emotions, all at the same time. The adrenaline must just be flowing through ones veins like water. I also imagine, after a few years, it's nothing like that anymore, but still good.
It's a coin toss with musical celebrities, as to whether they maintain a decent level of psychological health. Most of them become arrogant, self centered "divas," who are next to impossible to deal with. But some, the ones who are good (I don't mean good, as in skilled. I mean good, as in a person who actually cares about others, not just himself or herself) and actually enjoys it, seem to be able to create wall between their public life and personal life, allowing them to maintain a greater separation, thus allowing personal relationships a better chance, granting more privacy and overall, just allowing them to function normally, without feeling smothered.
I think Tom Petty was on of these. I compared a couple of his earlier interviews and a couple of his later interviews. While he did mature over the years, as is normal, he didn't really pick any weird quirks that kind of make people wonder WTF! I think he found a balance between total isolation and actually being able to have a life outside of his musical career.
Nothing I have stated here is based on any fact that I have any special knowledge of. It is pure speculation based on interviews and other publicly available information, combined with the fact that he seemed fairly grounded into the culture he grew up with, when he gave his interviews. So, while I think what I have said is mostly true, it is purely speculation and I could be completely wrong. He may have been stark raving mad, but hid it well. But, I just never saw or heard any madness in him.
I remember, not long after they had recorded their first album for "The Travelling Wilburies." Roy Orbison, now making a very late career comeback as part of the super group, died of a heart attack. The music video for the song "End of the Line," when Roy sang his part, they just had a picture of him, sitting on a rocking chair. This made me sad. Here were 4 great artists, all of whom had produced hit music, all of whom were legends in their time, getting together to form a super group, which went straight to the charts with several songs from their first album. They worked well together. After the death of Roy Orbison, they released some more albums, but never had the same success as they did with that first album. I was just a kid, but it still made me sad.
Now, Tom Petty is dead, too. Died at 66 years of age. That seems too young to me. But, I come from a family of people with long lives. In my family, not many die before reaching 90. Those that do, either suffered some injury which shortened their life, was killed in an accident, killed by violence or contracted some disease. We don't have heart attacks before reaching 80+ years. We don't seem to have much trouble with cancer. We are just people who tend to live longer than others. So, when I hear of someone dying at an age under 80, it just seems too young.
There is one benefit to being from a family where men live to be 90+. Younger wives! LOL.

I saw a documentary of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers beginnings, and Tom spoke of hearing Mike play for an audition---they needed a lead guitar player.. Most of the band was from Gainsville, Florida (Tom's hometown), but not Mike. Tom heard him, and basically told him "You're in the band. No question about it."

Cool story Greg! I had a similar, but different experience at a Black Label Society concert in Toronto around 2012/2013. Before BLS came on, someone back stage either started playing Oh Canada on keyboards, or it was a recording of keyboards. The crowd started singing almost immediately. By about 20 seconds in, about 98% of the crowd was singing it at the top of their lungs! It was almost deafening! Everyone was looking at one another, stunned, and thinking, can you believe this is happening? That too, made the hairs on my body stand up and my body tingle! Never have I heard such a heart felt rendition of our national anthem at ANY Canada Day festivities! Incredible indeed! BTW, this is probably my favorite of his with Refugee, Runnin' Down a Dream, and Love Is A Long Road!

Greg Wagner+What a great story! The first time I heard TP, I was just walking in the front door at a friends house, she was downstairs. But from upstairs I heard this,,,and it was like I was hypnotized. The rest of the group I came with went to see my friend, but I walked right up those stairs! I found her brother just staring at his stereo. It's funny that so many people remember the first time hearing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I can't remember any other band having such an impact! I graduated high school in 77, so they have been there all through every joy and sorrow and love and loss I have experienced. i am so glad I walked up those stairs and discovered the people who laid down the soundtrack to my life!

RIP Mr. Petty... My first concert was Tom Petty in Tucson Az late 70's. My older brother and his wife bought advance tickets, I was brought along as a last minute birthday present... bought my ticket at the door... OMG row 4 and dead center! can't get much better for a first concert! This was the "Damn the Torpedeos" tour. He came back out for a second encoure... and spent almost 15 minutes doing breakdown.... As he came back on stage for that last time he had a 'big gulp' sized beer in his hand (The TCC sold alcohol back then) and screamed " You people are Crazy and dashed it across the audience... That spray of Tom's cold beer in a hot crowd... was awesome. As was the concert. It was an amazing night for my teenybopper self. I've seen him live more than any other artist, mostly by chance, even got to see Stevie Nicks show up on stage at a Phoenix show. A great artist, great talent. I miss you Mr. P.

I was working in a photo lab in Flagstaff at the time, really into photography. I went to the show with a pretty nice 35mm SLR camera and a big lens. Took one of the best pictures of my life. Got Tom in profile... Hair blazing gold in the spotlights... perfect focus, but for his hand which was a blur as he played his guitar. I was about 23 at the time and too much life has gone by since, the picture has been lost to time. I had the framed 8x10 for years.

I saw him in concert at the California State Fair in 1981 with Stevie Nicks. The crowd knew his songs as well as he did and sang every song with him.Best concert I ever attended!!!

In "05" I took my 15 year old son to see Tom Petty. He went not because he was that excited about Tom Petty, but for me.
When "Break Down" came on I glanced at my son, his eyes were wide seeing his old man cutting loose and belting out ... "BABY!!!!"
One the best times we spent together....
    Thanks Tom....
