My experience- I’ve found that Filipinos who are working away from their province town will often return home over New Years. New years seemed to always be the priority over Christmas. Christmas is a commercial big deal in the malls and public decorations, etc, but not so much in the home. Many Filipinos will routinely be off for 2 weeks surrounding new years.

Yes, in this province, new years is off the chain. Until about 12:17 AM.
It’s really fun here. With fireworks and lots of noise. Didn’t so much see a lot of time off except for the schools.

Taking other people out on your birthday of course sounds strange to us but if that is their tradition, I think that's great. I actually like the fact that different cultures have different ways of celebrating than we do. At least its not as wierd as being a grape for Halloween 🤣🤣

Last November I saw a frozen turkey at S&R. The3500 plus peso price really put me off. Plus I couldn't find any cranberry sauce. My B'day is the day after Christmas and we're with her family and I was stuck for the lechon manok and 6 cases of Red Horse.

I’ve spent Holidays in the Philippines but the overseas holiday that I’ll never forget was around Christmas time in District one Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam. I was dating a girl there at the time eventually marrying her we two children together. This was back in the early 2000’s anyway all the young people were out celebrating so my girlfriend and I were staying in a hotel nearby decided to join them that night. We were walking through the crowd of people no problem then a group of three young ladies walked up to me and they all threw this glitter confetti right in my face and one actually smacked me just after she released the confetti. I survived that only for another couple of ladies coming up doing the same thing except this time it got in my eye pretty bad I was in pain for awhile. We broke out of there and finally my eye started to get a little better after my girlfriend attended to it. I remember the police coming down to break the crowd up. They were carrying SKS rifles. We went by them and into the hotel. I looked like hell covered in Confetti. The guy behind the counter at the reception laughed. I took a shower and the cleaning lady sure had a lot of confetti to clean up after that. They just attacked the foreigners like that. One guy tapped on my shoulder but I didn’t look back thinking I’d get a load of confetti in my face. He tapped again and said it’s starting to look like Christmas or something and I turned around and that dude was in as bad of shape as I was. Would I do it again. Hell yeah it made a good story to tell.

@@richierich3140the last time I was on the West Coast what is no later than 2006. Back then it wasn't wasn't bad at all as far as I could tell. But seeing all the CZcams videos showing how the west coast is working out now I wouldn't want to be there even for a day. There is one news channel that was doing a report on it and they were getting robbed while they were doing the report.

I think you don't understand birthdays here at all. The culture says that you are supposed to treat your family to show gratitude for being alive and healthy. It has morphed into an opportunity to display your status by spending as much as you can. Foreigners are expected to go all out since they are rich.
We have one or two birthdays a month in the family. I contribute enough for a cake. But there are 3 days a year that are for just my partner and I. Her birthday, my birthday, and our anniversary. We go somewhere to celebrate. Just the 2 of us. It took years for the family to get used to that. They expected lechon on my birthday or a feast at a local restaurant, at my expense.
    Nope.
    A blending of cultures.

    • @richierich3140

      I actually understand completely.
Your view is just that … your view.
Many were surprised by the invitation and very grateful. Many brought sides and didn’t expect a “free” ride.
Guess it’s what you see in it.

It's why you need to choose your partners carefully. If you're partners are educated and well off financially these won't be any issues.
