  • BART stands for Bay Area Rapid Transit. It is a public transportation system serving the San Francisco Bay Area in California, United States1. The system has 6 lines and 50 stations, and it is used by over 400,000 passengers daily. BART is known for its distinctive design, which includes a third rail that provides power to the trains, and its use of a computerized train control system. The system is also notable for its role in the development of the Bay Area, as it has helped to shape the region’s growth and development since its inception in 1972.
BART has recently installed new fare gates at West Oakland station. The new fare gates are part of the Next Generation Fare Gate project, which aims to replace all 700 fare gates in the BART system with new ones by the end of 2025. The new fare gates are designed to enhance safety and reduce fare evasion. They feature clear swing barriers that are difficult to push through, jump over, or maneuver under. The gates are also equipped with advanced 3D sensors that can detect if someone is in a wheelchair or has a bike, stroller, or luggage with them. The new fare gates are expected to improve access for those who bring bikes, strollers, and luggage. The project is estimated to cost $90 million, and BART has secured $73 million of the funding so far
