  • On September 11, 2018 Air India 101 had a major emergency following the failure of the ILS in poor weather. Heavy rains made it impossible to spot the runway. To compound their issues, they were low on fuel. Were they able to avoid another tragedy on September 11 in New York? Let’s find out. This is the story of Air India Flight 101.

As a pilot that has flown the Boeing 777-300 many a time, I want to suggest that we strip away the euphemisms: Air India's safety inspection process is a catastrophic failure, a disastrous mockery of aviation safety norms. The breakdown of multiple critical instruments on a 777-300 is a blaring, deafening alarm that's been ignored for far too long. The fact that the pilots had to resort to a visual landing, a method practically obsolete in today's technological era, it's a page out of the dark ages of aviation.
This incident should not be painted as a 'narrow escape' or a 'miraculous landing.' That's a gross, dangerous misrepresentation of the truth. This was a near-disaster, a potential massacre in the skies, narrowly averted not by systematic safety but by sheer, dumb luck. Every passenger on that flight came perilously close to paying the ultimate price for Air India's inexcusable, abhorrent disregard for their lives.
The regulatory authorities who have allowed this farce of a safety protocol to persist should be ashamed. Their complacency and failure to enforce rigorous safety standards are as much to blame as the airline's own negligence. There should be outrage, there should be a public outcry for accountability and immediate, sweeping changes.
Air India needs to be held accountable for this egregious, unforgivable lapse in safety. They need a severe, systemic overhaul of their entire operational ethos. Every executive, every manager, every engineer and inspector who allowed this travesty to occur should be questioning their role in this perilous gamble with human lives.

Even after landing at Newark, we were on the runway for a good hour or so. The passenger next to me called 911 to complain about Air India and its pilots not letting him off the plane and holding him captive on American soil. It got hot inside and the air hostesses were literally fanning the guy! I should have a picture somewhere.
When we landed, someone remarked about it being September 11. Newark had ambulances and fire trucks lined up next to the landing strip! What a day -- and what a miracle to be alive; all thanks to Captain Rustom Palia! Hope to run into him someday and thank him personally.

I've said this before and I'll say it now, Air India has some of the best pilots in the world. There is no doubt that they have to upgrade the aircrafts and amenities, but some of the best take-offs and landings I've had are with Air India. They have amazingly talented pilots, but they should invest in training their flight attendants. I hope Air India comes up (now that it has come home to the Tata Group) and soars even higher. Travelling to and from Japan in the B747 in 1996 and regular trips to and from the UAE from 2011-2017 have made me a lifetime fan of the brand.

Being a pilot myself (not commercial), the pilots did an astounding job with A101 heavy. Then the ATC's at JFK and EWR did an awesome job as well.
Air India needs to really turn up their maintenance. Every system must work on an airplane. It's not a bus where you can stop and fix it en route. I am sure the incidents are reported and logged. They just didn't make a press release for already struggling airlines but the word quickly got around.
I flew AirIndia many times and there are maintenance issues for sure. They just ignore the priority of safety inside the cockpits and in the main cabin.
The crew themselves are prepared for more than standard training. I won't be surprised if they have handyman tools to fix problems.

3 minutes into the video and I’m already shaking my head at the pilot and airline decision making. The APU is absolutely a critical instrument and the plane should have never left without it working. In the event of an engine failure or an engine stall the APU turns on and sends electricity to the cabin allowing the rest of the instruments to keep functioning and gives the pilots the ability to attempt to recover the plane. Deciding to take a plane with nearly 400 souls onboard on a 15 hour flight knowing the APU is not working is absolutely insane.

Wow those air India pilots and captain are amazing. They were looking at an utter catastrophe but kept their cool and used every resource and effort to best land the plane. They were very lucky too because if they did not land on their first attempt at the 400 ceiling of Newark, then there would be no second chance. They did really well. I hope the Indian Govt honoured them for that. Those pilots professionalism and calmness and focus saved everyone's life on the plane. The ATCs was very professional and helpful too.
I can't help but compare those skilled air India pilots to the Air France pilots of 2009. The Air France flight was not in any kind of real trouble, but because they did not take corrective actions when the stall warning came on, that is what killed them. They were not on autopilot and had stall warnings for at least four minutes and were at an altitude where they could easily have recovered from. But the black box recorder showed that the pilots ignored the stall warnings and didn't even mention them. The pilots were utterly confused as to why the plane was losing altitude and behaving as it did. It took until seconds before the crash for one of the pilots to work out that the planes nose had been pointing up the whole time.

Basically, the aircraft was unfit to fly from the start. Nevertheless, the outstanding teamwork of the pilots and air traffic controllers made the flight a success. It could have turned out very differently.
