They did not have an S model on the lot so I wheeled around a base model. Halfway though the test drive I looked at the salesman and asked, "this is the SLOW version of this car?!?!" Finally drove one and I'm about to say it, I've wanted a 911 my whole life and drove them back to back and I need a Cayman!! Old school 911 size and power is plentiful for the mountains of East Tennessee!! My first car was an 87 944 and then I was hooked. I got a surprise, a new 2003 v6 Yellow Mustang Convertible GAVE to me by my grandfather a year or so after the 944 and don't get me wrong. I'll always keep the Mustang because of what memories and it being a gift. I just wished my grandfather had let me buy the Porsche from him. I don't know why he wouldn't sell it, but it sat for 6 years and it was time for my little brother to get his own car. We got an offer of a 1992 Mazda Mx-5 with a 1.8 swap and ran like a top. My grandfather said what do you think about trading the Porsche as it sat for so many years and knowing my brother has always loved performance cars but didn't want my hand me downs so to speak, he has now drove the wheels off the Miata!! We both fell in love with it of course and now my 3 brothers are off to test drive some used Porsche's and hope to bring one home!! Long story I know but I guess that's where we all fell in love with driving!! You guys do such in depth reviews and thought I'd share a story and am currently looking for my 944 from 16 years ago!!

    For the best driver's car / driving focused car? - Porsche Cayman S
    For the best all-around / do-everything well car? - BMW M3. The S5 is refined, but not as great a performance car as the M3. The C63 is a great performance car, but not the refined animal and cruiser combination that the M3 provides.

    having learned to drive in a VW beetle, forgive me, but there is a touch of the VW in the cayman. the comfortable controls (steering, brakes, clutch and throttle) are a dead giveaway, as is the flat four sound in back. but there is surprising acceleration with the 245 HP engine once it reached 4000 RPM and right up to the limiter (yeah, i accidently hit it during my test drive).

    Not being a Porsche guy, I actually didn't know at first that the Cayman was a Boxster sibling. My first reaction when finding the Cayman S was that this was a higher end, more pure sports car from Porsche. Once I did some reading and realized that it was so cheap and so good, I can't stop looking at them. It's like that girl you lusted after in school. She's got everything a man wants but without the a bunch of baggage.. sure the cheerleader is the one everyone wants but when you think about it, why? is it just because she's a cheerleader and the props you get for pulling one? That's the 911 for you, you know it's not the better car but deep down you know you probably want it mostly because you want the credit for owning one.. Ego aside, everyone including Porsche knows this is the best car they build and it's only a matter of time before the 911 is supplanted by its less appreciated little brother. At 37, it's been a long time since I've been truly excited about a car and the Cayman is doing just that. I just keep coming back to watch videos and check prices, there's a real good chance I'll buy one next year when the gen2s come down a little more.

      Mate, I've been obsessed my whole life with Ferrari's. After doing a road trip with a mate in a Porsche 997 I started looking at other more affordable options. The Cayman S to me, has Ferrari 360 looks, with none of the maintenance headaches or looming potentially bankrupting bills. The looks are the most Ferrari like Porsche I have ever seen. And in about a year or 2, I could buy one cash.

I wanted another mid-engine car, having previously owned a Lancia, but knew getting an Elise would be miserable for DD. The Cayman is like an Elise without the finicky parts. Also the flat 6 is beautiful on song. And yes the 987.2 is worth it for the power boost and better engine design.. it's not just the IMS that dies in the M97 engine cars.

      Extremely few issues with the Cayman S gen 1 model starting in 2006. Bigger bearing than earlier 911 and Boxster models. Most important thing is to drive them regularly and give the engine a work out when driving. Change oil every 5k miles and there should be few if any issues. I have 68K miles on mine with zero issues, and know a bunch of other similar owners with no issues. Local Porsche dealer says maybe one in fifty cars have issues with bore scoring or IMS, but most of these have not been maintained properly, and/or driven too slowly/ used for short trips only or typically a combination of all three.

Plenty will still happily do 180-200,000 miles if looked after as you say and b. There are very good rebuilds out there that will add power too. Just avoid steel liners. Differential thermal expansion is very hard to overcome.

    The Cayman imo is one of the best Porsches ever made and I prefer it over most 911s other than the classic air-cooled models. and the 911 GT3 (996 version), but sometimes, I still say 911 over Cayman, but other times, I say Cayman over 911 depending on the differences between each other. Anyway, I remember I fell in love with it when it first came out and I played that car a lot on Need for Speed Most Wanted and the looks is what made me keep the car and not buy a 911 in the game. The Cayman is barely slower than a basic 911 and the Cayman is better looking, better balanced and mid-engine layout > rear-engine layout, better car on the track and slightly better handling, and you can find used Caymans right now for around the $20K-30K range and even 996 911s which are older still go for around that price and a new Cayman is about $25K less than a new basic 911. If you do the math, a new Cayman S with the PDK will slightly outrun a new basic 911 with a 6 Speed manual, but with the same tranny, the 911 performance is better by a fraction and of course, I still say manual over PDK. Best of all, the Cayman S is faster, lighter, more reliable, better gas mileage and fun to drive than its other rivals in its class for example, the BMW Z4M. Other than the air-cooled models, the Cayman is indeed the best Porsche ever made other than the Carrera GT and the new 918 Spyder or some other 911s, it's more than a poor-man's 911 or a Boxster coupe, the Cayman has some amenities and qualities that you can't find on other Porsches and even if I had enough money to buy a 911, I still would buy a Cayman S so that doesn't mean that the Cayman is the Porsche people only buy if you can't afford a 911 and I probably would own both a Cayman and a 911 depending what Porsche I am in the mood to drive such as either flagship and history and specialty or pure driving experience and balance, there are also rich people who claim to be Porschephiles that don't have 911s and they would rather have a Cayman since most of them own and like 911s. I would buy a Cayman S no matter how rich I am and I still would love to own a lots of 911s as well. Porsche still remains the best German brand ever and it's the only German brand name I am a fan of. The 911, Cayman, and the Boxster still prove how great of a company Porsche is.

    I bought my Porsche Cayman after the first test drive, I originally was looking at a 2 door Mercedes, didn't even compare. The sales person told me to take the winding road at 60mph on a 15mph turn, I chickened out, then became more confident of it's handling, then I took it at 60mph with No regrets, bought the Porsche that day !!

    It reminds me of early 718/550 Porsches, Ferrari/Dino 246GTS (so beautiful). I chose my Guards Red 2011 987.2 two years ago now and it is staying. Uncanny handling in the twisties, gorgeous and fast. So engaging, light and nimble. I love this body style, love the sound, love the PDK and easy DIY maintenance. Mine has the GT3 paddle shifter steering wheel which gets rid of that silly button shifter wheel. I did detail and paint intake plenum, throttle body and intake runner badges and put a clear engine cover on which gives it a McLaren look through the rear glass - seriously it's spectacular! It's my special lady and sits beside a Red Triumph Thruxton - Hmmm what to take today :)

    Cayman has center engine which is sick zen. Feels so balanced. 911 still has the better angles and shape, but unless u have FU money foe the Spyder, 2011-15 Cayman is probably THE best Porsche

    • @daithilacha1
      @daithilacha1 Před 6 lety +1

      I beg to disagree and think the Cayman is better looking than the 911. Many would agree with me. More modern looking, and those sexy hips. The 911 looks a bit heavy around the rear and a bit blander styling wise.

    • @DavidMiller-tg4bm
      @DavidMiller-tg4bm Před 5 lety

      Yes Jimmy I totally agree with you. Spot on. In my personal opinion I think the Cayman is way more stylish and sexy looking than the 911. The way the rear hatch slants down and fits between those sexy wide hips of the Cayman it just gives it an expensive sports car look. Don't get me wrong I do like the 911 bit it looks heavy and to me the rear end looks too bubbly. A spoiler helps but even then still doesn't quite look as good as the Cayman. Even with less power I would get the Cayman hands down every time over a 911. That's why I bought a Cayman S.

    I have driven many amazing cars, many 911s and a few newer Caymans. These smaller, analog 987S models are still one of the most thoroughly enjoyable cars I have driven. The 987 also gets way more looks with its curvy classic lines (almost classic 550 spyder like) than the other newer Cayman models (exluding of course the louder "Hey look at me" GT4).

    I leased an '08 for 3 years and loved it. I'm 6'2" and drove it cross country as well as several 500+ mile road trips. It was as comfortable as my SUV. It would also average ~30 mpg combined on long distances (mine was a stick). My only complaint was that it didn't have an iPhone / iPod connection. The nav system enables them but is another $2500. That just seemed excessive considering many new base model cars offer the connection at no extra cost. An after market unit worked fine.

  • @curvetrcalinga
    @curvetrcalinga Před 5 lety +3

    I still have this model and could not let go of it after I got the 4C. Two different cars; this one is tamed, the 4C is not and so alive. This, the 4C, and, S2000s, 996/997, the Exige/Elise are the last of the car breeds that gives the drivers maximum unsynthetic feedback. I’ll plan keeping it and pass it to my son.

    • @JCAutoworks
      @JCAutoworks Před 5 lety

      So I'd obviously love to have both but that's not gonna happen soon lol, I think the 4c has more soul but in general which do you prefer in terms of daily driving?

    • @curvetrcalinga
      @curvetrcalinga Před 5 lety

      Jastinder Chahal . The Cayman is still the better daily driver even if it’s stick shift driving in traffic. The 4C, even if it’s automatic, will have issues on heavy traffic because of its dry dual clutch and no power steering. If the traffic is not stop and go and just really slow driving, the 4C can be daily driven. It’s the stop and go traffic that will cause issues with the 4Cs clutch because it’s a dry type.

    335i is an all-around car many young males aspire to. A Cayman or any other Porsche sports car is very different. You have to let go of practicality. The car is raw (jerks if driven too lightly), even the stock exhaust drones at highway speeds, and your kidneys bang around on rough roads. If you have that passion, a well-maintained used Cayman/Boxster is the steal of the decade.

I’ve been watching since the A4 Avant UltraSport days (4 years already?!) and have seen your show growin time. my friends started watching after the ZR-1 video. What do Paul and Todd drive? The reason I watch the show can be resumed in this Cayman S video, so much value in used high end german cars that I’ve been buying that way since 2003. I dream of a review of 07-08 911 GT3s. I find the seat goes back just a hair past what I need and there is 3-4" over my head in the "bubble roof". I have the stock 12 way power seats, the adaptive sport seats of sport bucket seats may be different. All I can say is get one!
