  • Watch me rage over the realisation that Dremels are trash. I suspect the electronics to have failed in my almost new Dremel 3000, but it proves to be the stator. Apparently a common issue.

    I want to say an amazing THANK YOU!!! I’m unemployed and using my dremel for all the usual stuff like grinding dogs claws, trimming bolts off saddle fittings, renovating Microsoft Trackballs and when it died it was a massive “oh shit” moment. 20 minutes with your video and I’m up and grinding again! Thank you!!

    This exact thing seems to happen often. When you look at the little metal clip, the enamelled wire from the field winding is pressed into a little slot of metal and when the tool vibrates, it eventually shears off. Fixed mine twice in one year of light use. Dremel should address this issue.

    Yup! Same problem on mine after not very much use. Also failed a second time so unwound one turn of the coil, and leaving adequate slack reconnected no worries. It seems that TOO much tension is put on the coil ends during manufacture and vibration and temperature rise during use takes care of the rest. Since fixing it a second time it worked fine until, after MUCH use, the bearings BOTH failed. Getting the rear one off - piece of cake. To get the front one off the collet shaft (tube on the armature shaft) is, so far impossible! I thought perhaps it was threaded onto the armature shaft so I tried my small c-spanner to turn it (both for LH and RH threads) - ZERO movement.
    My gear puller can apply a LOT of force and it removed the rear bearing simple as, but there does NOT appear to be an easy way to remove this collet tube/shaft to allow the bearing to be removed! It's still there awaiting repair. Meantime bought another 3000 and that's been fine (so far, touch wood) and bearings are good, but they WILL go at some point and it would be nice to be able to repair the damned thing and not have to scrap it for sake of one tiddly bearing that would otherwise be a piece of cake to remove/replace.
    Anyone know exactly how the collet tube/shaft is fitted? Interference fit or is it screwed to the armature shaft? Or is it one of these damned tools where the manufacturer decides in advance that any failure (ALWAYS out of warranty of course) will doom the machine? I HATE designs that are made to be assembled for production rather than disassembled and repaired in use. Do the latter, the former is a piece of cake. It's SUCH a waste.Companies' products should be internationally graded for their repairability and maintainability levels. Trouble is most (if not all) would FAIL epically!!

  • @brianbrians3157
    @brianbrians3157 Před 6 lety

    Wow, I have a Dremel Multipro made I think sometime in the 90's and the internals look nearly identical. It would randomly cut out, and the rpm would jump all over the place so I had to pull apart the variable switch and bend the spring contact as it wasn't making good enough contact with the carbon track. A common problem apparently. Stuff like this really makes a case for planned obsolescence or engineered to fail. They had decades to make a design bulletproof yet it still fails after an obscenely short amount of run time.

  • @daveayerstdavies
    @daveayerstdavies Před 5 lety +12

    I had the same problem. A much simpler and less invasive fix is just to to unwind one turn from the stator winding and put it back in the IDC clip. Job done in 10 minutes. I think you are hard on the Dremel. Mine lasted 7 years before the failure, it was a simple repair requiring no new parts.

      Did exactly this, worked. For future reference for anyone, find where the wire has broken, right by crimp. There won't be enough to put it back in the crimp, so unloop the wire back through the part one time, until you get back to where the wire broke, but now with more wire. Take the crimp out, pull the wire up into the v, replace the crimp, trim excess wire

    thanks for the video
    My Dremel also had maybe had around 1hrs total use. Brushes hardly worn.
    It also stopped dead without warning in the middle of a job
    I ended up grabbing my cheap $50 'Supatool' brand rotary tool that I forgot I had and carried on (I remember buying the Dremel because I can be a bit of brand snob and liked some of the accessories it came with)
    Started pulling apart the Dremel the other day. Didn't get too far, didn't see anything obvious so was ready to bin it.
    But watched this video now, so might have another go at it and see if mine has suffered from a similar problem
    Or I might just stick with my $50 cheapo that seems to have lasted a lot longer than the far more expensive Dremel...

    Thanks... I might have to be getting a new drill and you have tempted me not to go with Dremell...probably can't afford one anyway. My wee Colt has packed in because the plastic clutch joining the motor drive shaft to the drill ( why on earth wasn't it a single unit like yours ) has denatured and shattered. I've hardly used the rotten thing but have had it in the drawer for about 15 years. Guess I can't complain. I was wondering if I could pack the space with some gap filling glue..... could be good enough for the sort of tasks I'm likely to try.

    @kinghocklee6059 Před 6 lety

    It looks wire breakage at the termination point is a very common problem. The weakest point is where the wire bends into the plastic slot to be clamped into contact. The wire bend is under stress, and when the Dremel is spinning at high speed, there is constant vibration, which translates into cyclic stress at the bend. Over time, the wire breaks due to fatigue. To overcome this, I potted a little but of adhesive just before the bend to fix the wire to the wall. This will cut down vibration and therefore cyclic stress at the wire bend.

    There's been more than just a few of these incidents, all with the same problem. Mine hasn't failed yet, but before it does, I'm thinking of getting some polyimide tape and tape down the ends of the enamelled copper wire to that white insulation card. This, so that it doesn't vibrate when the motor is running. Vibration is likely causing work-hardening in the copper, then it fractures. The stator is loosely coiled which is disappointing.

    Don't use compressed air on anything that has bearings or is rotary. All you will do is jam up the unit. If anything vacuum the unit out. they are not trash. They just need to be well maintained. My company has 11 dremel units that are as old as the hills and they all still run fine. I don't know if Dremel has a maintenance video but they should for the people that don't understand how to maintain their tools. It isn't a hammer.

    Thanks for this, I hope it will resurrect my Dremel which broke in 3 hours, two days after I took the second broken one back for a replacement - after the third broke I gave up and it got demoted to the back of a drawer. I was fairly impressed with the last one however, as it did manage almost 3 hours, the previous 2 didn't even cope for an hour.
    The issue I see with them is that they simply shake themselves apart. If you try and use a 2mm drill through a 0.5mm sheet, the final hole size is almost 4mm. It makes accurate drilling not possible as you can't even centre the drill. Why they bother having a pillar mount (which I bought too) when it's this useless is completely beyond me. Waste of material, resource and consumers money.
    I guess you can only use this for light finishing and cutting. Anything which requires accuracy.... forget it.
    The moral of this story, don't bother with DREMEL, they are incompetent at both design and manufacture!

    I've seen the same issue in another "broken dremel 3000" vid. Seems they "over engineered" it to last past the warranty period.😂 Just bought one and exchanged it for a second one because it would'nt even turn on speeds 1-3 and 4-7 had not power enough to grind a potatoe. Thinking this model is a fail for dremel. Looks nice thats all.

  • @francisx.mcphillips4211

    I was making rings and HAVE to get these orders out YESTERDAY!!!! I believe we ALL have had the same problem FFcossag. The problem is, is that Dremel is using Aluminum connectors with the copper wire in the "Stator"!! Aluminum and copper DO NOT play well together!! Mine was only bout 6 months old and in great condition! Why don't they use copper connectors?? IDK. Plus the engineering of the stator is made TO FAIL. Thanks for the info FFcossag. Every video I see where the Dremel just STOPS, it has always been the stator and faulty copper wires breaking or connectors dislodging. Fuck, for the price we pay you'd think they would design a better product!! Does anyone out there have any suggestions FOR A BETTER SIMILAR TOOL???? Thank you!!

    • @DoyleFM
      @DoyleFM Před 4 lety

      Reason they don't use copper connectors is because they can save maybe $0.02 on each unit. But that adds up. Same thing for the brush housing. If they made that part out of something other than plastic, then I wouldn't've melted my brushes into the casing last night.
      😕
      It's all about saving every single stinking fragment of a penny that they can so they can sell at exorbitant prices for sky high profit.

    gracias por vídeo, pero te faltó una cosa por hacer, en tu vídeo se ve que las delgas están negras del desgaste de las escobillas, para una reparación al 100% habría que lijar las delgas y dejarlas de color cobre en lugar de negras que las dejaste.
    In English :
    thanks for video, but you missed something to do, in your video you see that the delgas are black from the brushes, for a 100% repair would have to sand the delgas and leave them copper color instead of black that the you left

      It's perfectly normal for brushes to leave black marks. Graphite lubricates the commutator and makes it last longer.

    am i the only one seeing this: right after the "taking apart" the dremel, the blue wire was on the right side, once he assembles the dremel again the blue wire is left?

    • @DoyleFM
      @DoyleFM Před 4 lety

      Doesn't matter because it's alternating current. If it was direct current it would matter but only to the point that the rotation would be reversed. However, unless one is quite observant & very particular, they might not even notice.
      But again, with AC current, the rotation will remain unchanged regardless of how which wire is connected to which input.
      After having written all of that, a very easy example of why it doesn't matter just came to mind. Assuming you're in the USA, many electrically powered devices now come standard with the plugs on their power cords made to fit only one way into wall receptacles. You know, one blade is wider than the other...
      Well, it used to be that this wasn't the case & that's because single or "split" phase AC current works irrespective of polarity.
      The idea behind the blade size difference is so that the neutral connection from the device will end up connected to the neutral side of the receptacle & the hot to the hot.
      Still, in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter because if an untrained or lazy person wired the wall receptacle you're using "backwards", then you're in essence, swapping the blue wire with the white at the source (receptacle) rather than at the connection point in the video when you plug it in.
      I hope this makes sense but if not, I'll try giving a different example.
      👌🏻

    I have had a Dremal hand tool and used it for 20 years with no problems every day. The problem is in modern teaching. The engineers are colleges are turning out have no real training in the knowledge in, or of the reliability of the materials they are designing in the products they hope to make. Any tool made of plastic is made for a short life. Plastic , (all kinds) is garbage. If they were educated right they would know this and maybe we could bring back the quality this country once was noted for. To make my point.... My Ford Model "A" 90 years old car, still can be fixed and is still running. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Nothing made today with plastic will last 10 years You can make book on that.

    I have a very cheap version of that dremel, it has effectively a lighting dimmer circuit for the speed, triac/diac some caps and resistors, and a bridge rectifier to drive the motor with d.c.
