Cut weapons in TF2 have always seemed like a strange case to me.
On the one hand I get that not all weapon designs are a win, but on the other hand the scorch shot made it into the game.

The reason why it took Valve so long to complete Expiration Date (the pilot episode for the TV show) is likely because of the amount of details they put in it.

13:27 This is the most heartbreaking cut content. Both Valve and Adult Swim have been a big inspiration growing through the early 2010s. To see these two collaborate was wild at the time and people were so excited to see where Valve would take this.
Expiration Date is the closest thing to a pilot episode and it's just unfortunate that this show never came to be.
Supposedly the comics reused plots that were going into the TV show. I guess it was faster and easier to make comics instead of dealing with SFM.

I love the animations they had for them burning - I get why they weren't added, but they are hilarious
they lasted too long and pyro mains thought the players were still alive after death everytime they killed them

@@pogobod2128 | They put the in TF2 Classic. They're real fun, but they do cause a little confusion. Luckily most folks use hit/kill sounds, so it's easy for the pyro to tell when to stop.

10:23 Lets note, also, if the custom weapons lobbies are right, the Inside Jab would also make it so when you backstab it isnt an insta-kill, it takes a little bit before it kills, so you can get multiple people or run away
The cancelled show is especially sad since, even if they wanted to revive it, not every voice actor is still with us...
i think there was one guy who voiced a couple soldier lines in expiration date, so that might work, but for engineer's og voice actor? yeah you might as well get a new voice actor
@@oof8493 That would be Nolan North who voiced soldier in the short since Rick May had surgery for his throat, he also voices merasmus (ironic). He also voiced engineer in expiration date too. You might know him from his role as Nathan Drake in the Uncharted games

From what I remember, the animation of the engineer "puking his guts out" is actually used on robot engineers from MvM. I could be wrong though.
yeah, its supposed to be the kill taunt for engie bots. but IIRC engineers never directly attack you, so they'll never actually do it in game

Robot Engineers taunt after getting kills with their sentry, and they just do the normal wrench laugh.

While arena WAS removed in an official capacity, arena still exists community wise in the versus saxton hale gamemode.
And that fix mentioned in the video was pretty useful, I remember being able to spawn in saxton hale matches when there was 1 dude and confusing everyone

2:50 It’s not technically unused, the mecha engineer in MvM uses this taunt I think. I feel it could have been an old version of the stock wrench taunt.

I always assumed cp_cloak was a dev map for testing the cloak shader on the different classes' materials, making the models cloak may likely have been able to be triggered via the console. Why it was left in the files is strange, though could have been just because of the simple fact it's so odd and funny, may have been left in as a joke

from what I recall, the death-by-burning animations were never actually featured in the game since a majority of them are very long and complicated, which could potentially lead to confusion as to whether an enemy player had actually died or not-- which I think is a fair point, the headshot and backstab animations are very brief when compared to some of the very jumpy ones like Demo's and Scout's burning animations
I can't find the exact source, though I remember reading this being claimed by playtesters as well as players in the general community who managed to implement those unused animations through server mods
Yeah I immediately noticed that effect in TF2Classic. Sometimes an enemy would die but I'd be confused cause they're still moving around. It's just awkward.

I just wish they'd finish asteroid. I'm pretty sure it was meant to tie into the final comic that's never going to exist, but the least they could do is finish the map. It felt like a nice improvement to CTF. A bit like how KotH was a better Arena.
I do think it's funny that you say Graveyard is getting arena love, when Graveyard is probably the most hated Halloween map. Virtually no one would play it if they weren't trying to do the contract for it.
I like to think the water balloon could be Pyro's, with similar functionality to the Jarate or Mad Milk that could work with the Neon Annihilator
Maybe it'd pop on hitting the ground and make enemies "Wet", but could also be used to kill in some way. Who knows

@@gungle2595 I often wonder if its an oversight, or a legitimate design choice that when coated in gas, it doesn't counts as wet. i mean, it would make the neon annihilator be a less niche use case, and wouldn't really be any more powerful than the jarate/bush wacka combo.

yeah itd frankly be a lot weaker than the revolver, pyro has non flamer weapons and youre still fucked when revealed, people underestimate the revolver to a truly silly degree

there's a map called cactus canyon in one of the plants vs zombies shooters and in the final minigame it behaves exactly like a payload map which makes sense considering the games are based off tf2

I really wonder why the stock Revolver and Ambassador haven't been made into shared secondary weapons for the Engie and Sniper (aside from the whole "requiring development time on TF2" thing). There are a lot of weapons that I feel could be shared. The Scout could have the stock SMG available as an alternate Primary as well the Soldier having it available as a Secondary, most classes (except Heavy, Medic, Spy, and Pyro) should be able to use the stock Pistol as an alternate Secondary, and there are a ton of melee weapons that would be fine to share (so many that it would be a pain to list them all).
I think with the water balloon, it would have been utilized by The Medic and would have been called the "LA Water Sample"
I was born in 2003, this game released when I was 4... And now here I am, playing this game since 2016, for almost a 1/3 of my life and a little over a 1/3 of TF2s life... I'm only 19 and I already feel old :_(
As someone who played the game since it came out on Orange box in mid 2008, all I can say is that I really feel sorry for you for missing out on TF2’s golden age.
most of those cut weapons have shown up in Team Fortress 2 Classic custom weapons mods in some form or another, indeed I think the Specialist and the Viewfinder are the only ones that haven't shown up in the Knockout Custom Weapons Mod

The balloon was probably meant to be a scout weapon, and may have been replaced by the mad milk
I had an idea for how the water balloon type weapon could work, so it could be a diet Mad Milk so it has the same effect except it recharges quicker but the effect can only be inflicted upon one enemy at a time and only with a direct hit otherwise it doesn’t work. I know this doesn’t make any sense as a kill icon but it’s still fun to think about.

As an sniper main, I'd have loved to have The Viewfinder. Its function is quite interesting and actually quite useful to track spies. Furthermore, I do remember the Arena game mode. Played it a couple of times before it got completely removed.

Hi thewhat, weird question, but how did you get all of the unique animations you use? Is it a mode?
The animations can be viewed in HLMV. Although you won't be able to see a bunch of them as some have been removed over time. I've got the old build files and can retrieve any old removed anims I need.

there is a lot of community servers that run arena, and alot of those "scrapped" animations are just robot animations on other models

There’s a couple of free item trade plaza community servers that I visited, and since I love to play as a robot, I get headshotted alot. The server actually uses these robot animations and it’s pretty funny when my head just disappears as heavy or when I just fall down as soldier.

13:50 I don't want to be devil's advocate here, but I understand what could have been the major issues that lead to the cancellation of the project.
After all everyone with minimal knowledge about SFM will know the slow, tedious and painful process that it requieres to get a good quality animation. In the case of Expiration Date took almost a year to be finished by Valve themselves, and it was just the pilot.
While SFM has a special charm and its arguably part of TF2 identity, if they go for a full fleshed tv show would be better for the production team use a more conventional software to animate the chapters.
Or even the Source 2 SFM that apparently better in every aspect.
one of my favorite things to do on the tf wiki was to look at the unreleased content page where i think somebody read about things valve said could be added to the game and put them in the wiki as if it was confirmed that it would be coming- like additional polycount sets and another wave of grordbot sets. and then they'd be in there year after year when it became clear that hey.... they probably aren't coming, nor did anyone really confirm it
