One big thing that can HEAVILY effect the price of a hat is the class. A hat that is all-class or at least Soldier will go for far more than a hat for Pyro.
Thank you for pointing this out. The arachno arsonist for example is only 17 cents on marketplace when if it was on any other class with the same look and amount in circulation it would be at least into the 5 dollar range. I mean, I'm glad cause I'm a pyro main and cheaper hats are cheaper hats but it makes me sad to see so little care about pyros cosmetics

It’s important to note that the price for the burning TC shown here is very outdated. It was last priced 3 years ago, whereas current listings are 10k keys for a duped one and 30k keys (about $60,000) for the only clean one available. Who knows if someone would buy it for that amount, but that’s what you’d need to pay in order to get it.

I recently met a guy with a festivized australim rocket launcher, vintage gunboats, golden pan, and you guessed it, the burning flames team captain. His name was just 0 and he didn’t talk on vc, but he did use chat. He was pretty cool and i have a screenshot of him and his pan. I know almost no one will see this, but i just wanted to let you know i met a man with the craziest hat in the game. (No, the antlers aren’t a hat as they don’t take up the spot)

Just would like to note as a trader, 3:13 most bulk key buyers DO NOT buy keys at marketplace tf prices, they are BAD, 1.95 is basically equivalent to steam market prices. The true price of liquidated keys is around 1.70-1.80 but let's just say 1.75 as a healthy median. $13,300 is still incredibly expensive. * Also if you look at the burning team captain's marketplace tf sales, one sold 3 years ago for $13 K and one 2 years ago at $5.5K (... only 3174 keys ???)

I just wonder what the hell would happen if something like a Blood Nosed Caribou suddenly went up for sale to be honest. That thing is borderline cryptid tier with its like.. single recorded sighting of an owner using it and I don't even know if both of them still exist.
If I had to guess, it would be similar to the Million-Dollar CS:GO knife. If one were to suddenly emerge out of hiding and someone offered to sell it, it'd be up to the seller to pick a price. If it isn't worth at least 100 grand, I'd be surprised.

Tf2 mesmerizes me every day in different ways, a virtual game market gives light to the most silly yet interesting subjects. I don't know what I'll do with this info, but I'm happy to have it since you're so good at explaining.
It should also be important to note that the Unlocked Multi-Class Crate in the TF2 store cannot unbox Team Captains. It's in a Steam Guide called "What you can (and cannot) find in Keyless Cosmetic Crates". I think some of the Supply Munitions crates can also unbox series 1 unusuals, but their pool is diluted by other effects. So you have to unbox a Gen 1 crate for the highest chances, which are slowly becoming more and more expensive. Most of them are around a key or more on SCM.
Seeing someone wear that hat in the game is surreal.
I was playing medic, and had a soldier on my team wearing that hat.
He only was there for 2 rounds, but when he left, everyone was talking about him.
I remember being in possession of said Poisoned Shadows Antlers back when I brokered it for someone in 2015 and I never would have imagined it ever could have been more expensive than the Burning Flames TC. The market is insane now.

I remember back in the day the burning flames TC was my dream unusual but I quickly realized it was way too expensive so I decided to settle for a much cheaper effect that'd still look nice. Cut to a little over a year ago and I managed to pick up a clean blizzardy storm team captain for 66 keys, which is now way below what buyers and sellers of it are asking for. It's obviously nowhere near the burning TC but I'm happy to own an unusual TC none the less. doesn't harm that I like blizzardy storm either. Dreams do come true sometimes, even if you gotta lower your goals a bit.
I've been in TF2 trading for around a decade and nothing will ever compare to when the burning or scorching flames killer exclusive outpriced the TC for a couple of weeks/months. I remember being in a server where Sir Gray was just taking questions on the ramifications of it 😂😂😂

If you want to see what happens when a hat loses it's status symbol, you can look no further than the burning flames killer exclusive. Once a hat that held almost the same regard as the burning flames team captain at it's peak, the transition of traders and the generation of players has left the burning flames killer exclusive a shell of its former self. You should do a video on it, pretty crazy how the perception of something can control its value, I doubt the same thing would ever happen to burning flames TC though, just too well-known at this point.
The Nebula Captain Space Mann also tops the Burning TC at a whopping 8030 Keys and this one is a fairly recent item, added post-crate discontinuation
The burning team captain duped is 10,000 keys. The non duped version is 30,000 keys.

Back around 2014 to 2015 I was into unusual trading. At one point I had a darkblaze stately steel toe (pyro boot hat). When darkblaze was first introduced it was not considered a very valuable effect. Gen 1 unusual effects were the most sought after. It was then a pretty low tier effect on a low tier hat. It amazes me that darkblaze is now considered a high tier effect and the darkblaze steel toe is now worth 80+ keys. It was only worth a fraction of that when I sold it

Realistically, Valve could do something about the lost items. There are logs of every trade. They just choose not to because Valve's policy is to do as little as humanly possible.
It was a classic part of the community in old school tf2 days you could even see them in SFM's
I remember the first time someone tried to scam me, I started playing TF2 like a month before Gun Mettle and decided to partake in the invasion update, I unboxed my first crate and it was a CAPPER mind you this was the like the 3rd day of invasion and I joined a Turbine server and someone immediately sent me a trade request wanting to trade a Strang Eyelander for my CAPPER, he went on about how it had a lot of kills and it was worth more but I turned him down it wasn't until later I figured out the true value of the pistol

I thought the burning flames team captain hat was expensive due to _Star. If memory serves, he did a video on his hat, and explained why his is legit, and not stolen, even though it is duped, I think. Since he was huge at that time, then it blew up the price.

So, while I never got a burning flames team captain, I can say I was one of the lucky few on this day to get myself a stupid rare Series 1 Unusual hat. Unfortunately, Valve trade-locked it to my backpack forever so unless I sold my steam account itself, its not going anywhere.
Im still proud of it though, and I did unbox a 2nd unusual, one that wasnt NEARLY as rare, but I was able to sell that one before Valve cracked down on the bug. Some sort of scout hat with a circling tf logo unusual effect. Selling the hat did cover the cost of buying the expensive ass crates/keys however, so Im content with my one of a kind hat.

The fact that the most replayed part of the video is the very end of the sponsor segment, and immediately after it, says more than I ever could.
7:44 & 9:03 this is incorrect: The reported number of unusual hats on bptf actually doesn't account for dupes, the dupes are shared under the original item that was duped making it look like fewer are in existence basically a 1 of 1 that is duped will still show as a 1 of 1 because the item only have one history or entry so to speak. I believe like 7 that currently show on bptf are from the crate depression and as such are not tradeable and marketable forever. The actual reason why Burning Flames Team Captain is so Expensive is due to it being an iconic hat at this stage and the demand on one is so high as a result with a supply that can never meet the demand.
Also a fun fact on how bptf records number of existence you'll have to do a premium search for the item if it's an unusual weapon to check the actual amount as bptf have issues recording their existence count, alternatively using the Item DB Icon on nextbptf will work to search it for you as well.
Valve be like: "ah, yes, this guy lost 14000$ worth of virtual items, LET'S LOCK IT IN THE SCAMMER'S ACCOUNT FOR THEM TO FOREVER OWN"

I got scammed by friendly awhile back. A factory new strange thunderbolt sniper rifle I unboxed. Gave me some bad memories seeing that damn profile again.
I wish the TF2 economy would go back to how it was back in the days, I never got very far when I used to actively trade because i never managed to get good deals when transitioning to low tier unusual trading, on top of that i got to that stage when it became stupidly hard to trade lower value items and make profit, I had a lot of fun doing it though, plus i have some sick weapons for my pyro! :)

It's considerably more valuable than $14820 as the backpack.tf price is severely outdated, and it was the price for clean ones.
Clean ones haven't moved for years which is why the price hasn't updated.
Other hat's values have inflated significantly over the last 3 years, mainly discontinued effects (e.g. Poisoned Shadows Antlers sale).
Can't imagine it'd sell for more than extremely high tier miscs (though maybe they would considering they haven't moved backpacks at all), but the price is inaccurate and for sure far higher.

I didnt get the Top Shelf thingy. If you trade up those strange weapons, you have a chance of get it? (With a strange quality) or how does it work?
I think it’s like scrap crafting. Combine low tier weapons for a better one.
It’s like crafting tiers like scrap>rec>ref metal, except with ALL strange factory new weapons making EVERY part to get one of three top shelf weapons at the very end. So ten of these strange factory new skins for ONE strange factory new skin of the next tier, and ten of THOSE ones for the next tier.
Keep in mind factory new refers to the highest paint grade which is also RNG. You have one in several million chances to actually perfectly pull off crafting it the intended way. The other way is just dumping thousands of dollars on buying each individual weapon skin on the market and hoping you craft a factory new top shelf weapon which is also heavily rng despite being the last step.
Sure hats are cool but spending that much money on a virtual item is so risky. If there was a bug that got rid of it somehow it's not like Valve is legally obligated to recover it for you. You might also get trade banned incorrectly without any luck appealing. No thanks I'll take $14k in cash please
