I enjoy how you are calling those Little Necks "BIG'. Up here...just North and West of Seattle...those are of average size. Your technique is spot on. Using a small three prong garden claw is THE BEST tool. I find that you can find a vein...you'll fill your limit within 30 minutes. Never tried that technique with the stick...we would just start digging around where they "spit" and hoped for the best. Geoducks on the other hand are the TRUE CHALLENGE. The deepest I had to go was 3 1/2 ft and the tide was winning....but in the end and my sister holding my feet...I prevailed with a 4 lb clam. Not the biggest we've pulled up over the years...but big enough..

So another cool thing about sorrels, while in California we're most familiar with sourgrass (Oxalis pes-caprae a.k.a. African wood sorrel), there are other species of wood sorrels that can be eaten and used like sourgrass! The yellow wood sorrel looks almost identical to sourgrass but sort of like a miniaturized version. It still has the distinctive folding heart shaped leaves with the yellow flowers. I've found the taste tends to be milder than the usual sourgrass and would be good when you want a lower profile for the sour flavor!

Every time i have gone clamming we let them sit for a day(changing the water every few hours) with corn meal in the water to let them spit out sand and stuff.
