Sorry that this video is so different and thrown-together, I had practically no time to get it together as I was celebrating my birthday. Think of it less as a video essay and more of a tank podcast, I guess.
The American M24 Chaffee light tank isn't often talked about, and that does make some sense. The M24 arrived too late into World War II to make much of a profound impact, and was outdated by the time the Korean War rolled around. Still, the M24 was a very rugged, effective, and well-liked design.

It wasnt fast though, not compared to other medium tanks. Most medium tanks and MBTs can't operate in the jungle or in mountains for example, Chaffee could.

    • @John.McMillan
      @John.McMillan Před 2 lety +2

@@TheArklyte According to what I've read and researched, the M24 was better at off road than alot of tanks, especially for the time, however it was not pulling greatly ahead of the Sherman modifications and other later tanks/vehicles. Its advantage was lower weight and lower profile over its counterparts.
I am not denying at all it was good, even possibly great, but it was a relatively short lived superiority. With other medium tanks even equally or surpassing its offroad abilitied (such as the Russian T series or British counter parts), granted that's all on paper. I've never talked to tankers who used these vehicles. Im going off of written accounts and the very obviously inflated statistics the host nations describe.

It is such a strong tank for its BR, the gun is extremely strong at that BR range, it's definitely not the fastest light in that tier but it keeps up. Chaffee is easily one of my favorite tanks irl and in game. It punches well above its weight and has the mobility to get into position early enough to take advantage of the firepower it has. It's just as effective as the 75 Sherman, if not more so.

According to an ex-WW2 tank commander neighbour, sergeant Harry Bullen. His regiment, the 11th Hussars, operated M24 Chaffee tanks during the last few months of the war. His M24 was hit in the front, by an 88mm. AT gun hidden in a wood, as they crossed a bridge at full speed. The impact pushed the tank backwards and blew the now mangled automatic transmission components and fragments into the crew compartment. The driver, co-driver and gunner were killed instantly. the loader and himself, as the commander, were up on top stood in the open turret hatches, which saved their lives. Both of them suffered terrible shrapnel injuries to the legs and spent 8 months in hospital. By the time he was healed up and discharged from hospital, WW2 was over.

If I remember correctly the 75mm on the PBJs was a modified M3. Basically a crew in the field modified a PBJ to use a M3 from a Sherman, then later engineers in the states made lighter version specifically for the PBJ. So the Chaffee's gun was based on the M3 just a few more steps in between.

About the gun : the Norwegian military actually upgraded the Chaffee in the late 1960s to be able to take on heavier tanks. The upgrade program centered around a new main armament, consisting of a French D/925 Low-Pressure 90 mm gun. Firing a Hulladingsgranat M62 High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) round, the weapon was capable of defeating up to 320 mm (12.6 in) of armor, a vast improvement over the M24s original 75mm gun. This was complimented by a new coaxial Browning .50 cal (12.7 mm) machine gun, and a laser range-finder placed over the barrel. The main automotive upgrade was the replacement of the original engine with a new Detroit Diesel 6V-53T. Other, smaller modifications included a new Leopard 1-style rubber-pad track, a new sprocket wheel, new radios, and German-made smoke dischargers.
I kinda hope for the upgraded variant to be added to the game one day

There were some Chaffee's in the Pacific islands, during WWII. Some USMC's artillery and AT gunners reported the problems they had identifying them as american from a distance, when compared to the much taller Stuarts and Shermans.
Theyr silhouette is almost, more or less, maybe, kind of simillar(-ish) to some Japanese models, what is more than enough to be confusing in a real battle.
There is a period instructions video about that problem that you can find on YT.

As a scout your greatest weapon is your radio, not your gun. The guns were intended to get you out of trouble. The M-24 was a light scout that was often times used in a way never intended as a field expedient stop gap until dedicated systems could be brought up. The M-6 gun on the M-24 was a light-weight gun that still used the same 75mm ammunition as the M-3/M-4 tanks. Had the M-6 gotten a HEAT or HESH round, then it would have been a far more effective anti-tank gun. As to the M-26 Pershing was such a troubled design that US Army units stopped using them an fielded M-4 Shermans until the M-46/47 could be fielded. Even the Marines gave up on their M-26's in Korea.

    Day 2 of Asking
Spookston can you talk about an idea I have based off something you said in a past video (think it was the lend lease one). Sweden's tree should be turned into a "Nordic" Tree, which would have a Norwegian and Finnish tree, for the following reasons
Sweden lacks heavies, and premiums. Plus they have a general lack of creative tanks as most are similar or copy pastes
Norway made multiple tanks, concepts, and experimental designs.
Finland made some tanks, modified certain soviet tanks (BT-42, KV-1B), and also captured multiple tanks
Finland already exists within the Swedish tree with some vehicles, plus it could be an excuse to add Heavy Tanks to the Swedish trees like the IS-2, plus maybe even a T-34
This is in general, but remove the KV-1B from the German tree (they already have a KV-1) and move it to Sweden.
