Sorry that this video is so different and thrown-together, I had practically no time to get it together as I was celebrating my birthday. Think of it less as a video essay and more of a tank podcast, I guess.
The American M24 Chaffee light tank isn't often talked about, and that does make some sense. The M24 arrived too late into World War II to make much of a profound impact, and was outdated by the time the Korean War rolled around. Still, the M24 was a very rugged, effective, and well-liked design.

For anyone worrying about this being a permanent change to the series, it isn't. I was simply taking time off to celebrate my birthday but did not want my upload schedule to be impacted.
Happy birthday!

Happy birthday,mate 🎉
Happy birthday! hope you have a great day!
Oh my. Happy birthday!
If the M24 Chaffee came out in the 1930s, it would've been the best "medium" tank in the world.
Had it came out in 1930, British would have Centurions before the war and the Soviets would have T-54's, Japan would still be the same, Italy probably wouldn't had made the most useless tanks and Germany would have slapped King Tigers and Probably a Maus in early stages of the war. France well, maybe they would had updated their tanks instead of living off their victory in ww1 or maybe not..
@@Haaton-of-the-Basement

It’s a shame that I remember this more about how in North Korea it struggled to fight the T-34s compared to the Easy Eight, Pershing, and M46s. Then again it was from a instruction book for the Dog Walker Tank Model where the book basically hyped up the T-34 85 and down played the Easy Eight and Pershing before hyping up the Light Tank.
It was a while later that I realized it was used way before Korea War and was used in WW2.
Always easy to play the underdog
@@SP-sy5nq Like it was weird as I don’t know why they make the armor of the T-34 seem so strong. It was to the point that it felt like Propaganda for the M41
@Predator-rt1le Because a lot of model kits are given to children so they want to hype up the vehicle in the kit
I don't know much about it myself, but I heard the French had a lot of experience with chaffee's in Indochina. Might be worth checking up some of those experiences to learn more about the tank and possible flaws.
as i heard it didn't see much tank on tank action, but a lot of infantry support.

There was a Norwegian variant called the nm-116 panzerjager, it had the french 90mm heat slinger and a Detroit Diesel engine and a different transmission, it was pretty cool
This was something we actually discussed at length for this video, but was cut for brevity (in addition to discussions of the M24 in broader service with the French in Indochina, and the Chilean military).

The M24, in my opinion, was the first true "light tank." Fast, small, and versatile in it's roll. The light tanks before it really were just scout ranks and nothing more. Even though I don't play the M24 in War Thunder much, it's still one of my favorite light tanks. Great video, Spook! Keep it up!
Yeah man it's perfect with the M4 Sherman 🥰
It wasnt fast though, not compared to other medium tanks. There were other light tanks specifically meant to be fast, scout, go over the same terrain as the main tanks, while having the ability to engage both light and armoured targets as well as infantry, tanks that existed before the Chaffee.
@@John.McMillan The M5 series of Stuarts come to mind. Given that in 1944 the Germans were on the two prong defensive the smaller 37mm on the Stuarts wouldn't matter too much when most of your hostiles are infantry and you will rarely come across enemy tanks.
@@John.McMillan fast in regards to a tank doesn't mean only top speed on road:D
It's a combination of top, medium and technical(includes maintenance, refueling and crew rest times) speed on both road and off road, ability to climb certain angles on certain surfaces, operational range, logistical load, overall maneuverability, ability to cross certain bridges or soft soils and so on. Most medium tanks and MBTs can't operate in the jungle or in mountains for example, Chaffee could.
@@TheArklyte According to what I've read and researched, the M24 was better at off road than alot of tanks, especially for the time, however it was not pulling greatly ahead of the Sherman modifications and other later tanks/vehicles. Its advantage was lower weight and lower profile over its counterparts.
I am not denying at all it was good, even possibly great, but it was a relatively short lived superiority. With other medium tanks even equally or surpassing its offroad abilitied (such as the Russian T series or British counter parts), granted that's all on paper. I've never talked to tankers who used these vehicles. Im going off of written accounts and the very obviously inflated statistics the host nations describe.
IMO, the Chaffee is one of the most efficient tanks in WT along with the Panther. They're just very competent at their BRs and it's hard to do bad in them.
hahaha yeah
youre lying the tank is absolute shit you cant penn shit and you can get penned by anything
As my hero Squire once said, "It looks like a confused crab."
IIIII SERRRRRVVEEEEE THE SQUIREDONIAN EMPIREEEEEEEEEEE
1:38 The 105 HE made more fragments than the 75mm, the 75mm made similar amounts of fragments to the 90 HE. Specifically, the 75mm made slightly more fragments but the 90mm fragments had slightly more punch. Still very impressive.
The M24 is the best light tank of WW2 in War Thunder in my opinion, as it’s stabilizer can enable you to make shots while moving around corners. If you use it to take out components, I’ve even managed to kill a Tiger H and a Panther at the same time by hitting cannons and tracks, then going around to the sides and popping them.
How many light tanks are there thats not just an early war tank?
@@robertharris6092 Quite a lot, but few were deployed in late WW2 due to the heavy fighting. Post-war, a lot of light vehicles got on through budgets as a scout car or vehicle.
stabilizer didnt alllow shermans to shoot while moving i dont know much about chaffe
Does the Italian M24 have the stabilisers?
@@parthrabadiya4816 Thats an outright lie. Sherman stabilizer could work up to 15-20kph when properly maintained. There are Multiple accounts of crews firing on the move. Obviously its nothing compared to modern stabilizers, but when compared to ww2 tanks with 0, its pretty amazing.
The title surprised me. Even soviet historians usually has only good things to say about it and bemoan inability of USSR command to formulate even technical requirements for proper light tank until PT-76 came to be. And even that one is a different beast entirely.
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of his title conventions. The problem is that "How bad was the _____" is just his series on analyzing tanks. The title is not actually meant to indicate that the tank he is talking about was particularly bad. I do agree that it's confusing to someone not familiar with his videos.
I'll admit in war thunder the chaffee is one of my favorite tanks. It is such a strong tank for its BR, the gun is extremely strong at that BR range, it's definitely not the fastest light in that tier but it keeps up. Can't take a hit but dishes them out with the best of em. I've dragged the chaffee up to much higher BR's and still have success, mostly just to have another light in the line up for the scouting bonuses.
I was doing a custom battle with some friends and they were all 5.7 and I brought out the chaffee and wiped their whole team. Now I am known as chaffee bros and my crew is imortal
I always just liked the concept of a good gun on a bad chassis
germany would be happy to give u a selection of their tanks
The chassis is great? At worst, the turret ring could use a marginal increase in size, and the turret made 6-10 inches taller. But overall? Design goals exceeded, operates fine. Deploying it against Panther, Tigers known to be in the area is missing the point of the vehicle.
The chassis wasn’t bad
Light tanks were actually meta in wwII. They cost less, more maneuverable, and faster. and a German 75 is gonna cream you regardless of 63mm of armor or under 30mm.
"they didn't make many variants"
M19
the 6x.50 cal one
the recoilless rifles one

"Am I a joke to you?"
The 37mm when it entered service was actually perfectly sufficient for anti tank warfare at the time the difference is that when the US actually began to take part in any real anti tank warfare guns of that calibre were beginning to become obsolete. Where by 1943 as a towed gun it was being replaced by the 57mm.
The chat format works really well, keeps your attention and the flow of facts is steady and engaging, ty!
Always loved the opening scene in “The Bridge at Remagen” with the Chaffees leading the column going balls to the wall towards the bridge. Lots of these tanks appeared in 1960s war movies and were in use for a long time. Good testament to their durability.

The M18 GMC did have torsion bar suspension, but as you noted it was discounted for the qualifier because it was a Self-Propelled Gun (or Gun Motor Carriage as the Army liked to call things) and not a 'tank' in the typical or traditional sense.

If only it was as good as the M22 Locust
I remember fighting a guy in a T34 with this
In my spawn
Somehow, he only wounded my crew and killed my commander optic
Somehow killed him
Still questioning
I dunno precisely how spawn protection works, whether it negates all damage, or just reduces it, but spawn protection is a thing.
It sounds like maybe the game was allowing HE overpressure from the T-34s explosive charges to hurt your crew and optics, but otherwise stopped penetration.
@@hatman4818 the round went through your tank completely ghostshell style when you have spawn protection

Gosh dang I'm never this early. Keep up the vids!
love this little tank, absolute legend
Chaffee is easily one of my favorite tanks irl and in game. It punches well above its weight and has the mobility to get into position early enough to take advantage of the firepower it has. It's just as effective as the 75 Sherman, if not more so.
happy birthday and its just a bit different not bad though
According to an ex-WW2 tank commander neighbour, sergeant Harry Bullen. His regiment, the 11th Hussars, operated M24 Chaffee tanks during the last few months of the war. His M24 was hit in the front, by an 88mm. AT gun hidden in a wood, as they crossed a bridge at full speed. The impact pushed the tank backwards and blew the now mangled automatic transmission components and fragments into the crew compartment. The driver, co-driver and gunner were killed instantly. the loader and himself, as the commander, were up on top stood in the open turret hatches, which saved their lives. Both of them suffered terrible shrapnel injuries to the legs and spent 8 months in hospital. By the time he was healed up and discharged from hospital, WW2 was over.
.
Nice video as always. I do wonder though if there are plans for a how bad was the m41 video.
If I remember correctly the 75mm on the PBJs was a modified M3. Basically a crew in the field modified a PBJ to use a M3 from a Sherman, then later engineers in the states made lighter version specifically for the PBJ. So the Chaffee's gun was based on the M3 just a few more steps in between.
Love the content spookston!

Love the pure aesthetic design of this tnak too
About the gun : the Norwegian military actually upgraded the Chaffee in the late 1960s to be able to take on heavier tanks. The upgrade program centered around a new main armament, consisting of a French D/925 Low-Pressure 90 mm gun. Firing a Hulladingsgranat M62 High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) round, the weapon was capable of defeating up to 320 mm (12.6 in) of armor, a vast improvement over the M24s original 75mm gun. This was complimented by a new coaxial Browning .50 cal (12.7 mm) machine gun, and a laser range-finder placed over the barrel. The main automotive upgrade was the replacement of the original engine with a new Detroit Diesel 6V-53T. Other, smaller modifications included a new Leopard 1-style rubber-pad track, a new sprocket wheel, new radios, and German-made smoke dischargers.
I kinda hope for the upgraded variant to be added to the game one day
They did work on a M4 varient which had torsion bar suspension also but only a couple were built for testing. M4E2A4.
Finnaly i needed a rewiew on the m24
There were some Chaffee's in the Pacific islands, during WWII. Some USMC's artillery and AT gunners reported the problems they had identifying them as american from a distance, when compared to the much taller Stuarts and Shermans.
Theyr silhouette is almost, more or less, maybe, kind of simillar(-ish) to some Japanese models, what is more than enough to be confusing in a real battle.
There is a period instructions video about that problem that you can find on YT.
In the game Conqueror on the Acorn A3000 the Chaffee was so bad it would knock itself out if you hit a tree too fast.
As a scout your greatest weapon is your radio, not your gun. The guns were intended to get you out of trouble. The M-24 was a light scout that was often times used in a way never intended as a field expedient stop gap until dedicated systems could be brought up. The M-6 gun on the M-24 was a light-weight gun that still used the same 75mm ammunition as the M-3/M-4 tanks. Had the M-6 gotten a HEAT or HESH round, then it would have been a far more effective anti-tank gun. As to the M-26 Pershing was such a troubled design that US Army units stopped using them an fielded M-4 Shermans until the M-46/47 could be fielded. Even the Marines gave up on their M-26's in Korea.
I just died to it
Does anyone else wanna see spooksten tell like war stories with wt game play in the background kinda like a podcast ish thing
i feel like i like this format a little more, i like the kinda "podcast-like" feel to it.
Did the Chaffee ever use an APCR round? Could it use the T-45 shot that the Jumbo and other M3 cannon Shermans use?
I am curious, did a lightweight 105mm howitzer exist that could have been fitted for infantry support? I'm not sure if that would be the best choice, but it would be amusing to consider personally considering the T88 HMC (the 105-armed Hellcat)
So it’s a recon vehicle which performed well in it’s own role but then was put into a frontline role and suffered horribly? I feel like I’ve seen this one before
There are some fun modernizations that we're done in the cold war like the norwegian mod that added a 90mm cannon and night vision among other things.
7:35 gotta love those tanks that phase in and out of existence.
The M7 looks like if you described what a Sherman looks like to someone over the phone

I love how spooks sounds drunk or maybe he is drunk in this video 😂
Now I want to see the M338 round added to the game for the Chaffee to help it fight the early T-34's it ends up facing off against.

Might be an odd question but you play warthunder do you know how to stop your range increasing my barrel keeps raising up slowly as if I’m increasing it’s range the number on the range finder does go up so something could be happening with that do you know how to fix this

I may be mistaken, but wasn’t the M18 hellcat the first American tank in service to have torsion bar suspension??
The Chaffee is easily one of my favorite tanks to have ever existed

Wasn't the M19A1 double bofors 40mm SPAA built off of the M24 Chaffee?
I think the M18 was the first production tank to go torsion bar in service
My grandfather used one of these in his reconnaissance company in Korea.
Day 2 of Asking
Spookston can you talk about an idea I have based off something you said in a past video (think it was the lend lease one). Sweden's tree should be turned into a "Nordic" Tree, which would have a Norwegian and Finnish tree, for the following reasons
Sweden lacks heavies, and premiums. Plus they have a general lack of creative tanks as most are similar or copy pastes
Norway made multiple tanks, concepts, and experimental designs.
Finland made some tanks, modified certain soviet tanks (BT-42, KV-1B), and also captured multiple tanks
Finland already exists within the Swedish tree with some vehicles, plus it could be an excuse to add Heavy Tanks to the Swedish trees like the IS-2, plus maybe even a T-34
This is in general, but remove the KV-1B from the German tree (they already have a KV-1) and move it to Sweden.
My favorite vehicle and my first ace crew vehicle in warthunder.
