Gaijin added AHEAD shells to War Thunder with the PUMA IFV, but they've been broken ever since then. That was until the most recent update, which actually made AHEAD useable. The PGZ09 absolutely shreds planes now.

Germany does not hold the patent to the Gepard design, Swiss Oerlikon does, as they own the patent of the 35mm gun assembly, which in turn how the turret is designed. Hence why many SPAAG armed with 35mm Oerlikon cannon superficially resembled each other - their turret is designed around the 35mm gun assembly owned by Oerlikon. This does include but not limited to Polish PZA Loara, Type 87 "Guntank", Swiss Fliegerabwehrpanzer 61 prototype, US prototype SPAAG with 35mm gun that lost against the Sergeant York prototype, and of course... this Chinese Gepard :v

it's funny because now, panic spraying with the Gepard feels a lot like pepper spraying someone because they startled you by saying "hi"
I honestly don't think gaijin modeled the sub-projectiles at all, I think they just have it fire like 10-15 shrapnel forwards in a small cone like a really tiny APHE.
It seems like it also might be a fusing issue since they seem to be detonating at the point of impact for a normal round and not a couple meters before to maximize the shrapnel cone.
I think that's mainly due to performance. Imagine simulating thousands of sub-projectiles. Poor hampster is already overworked
That's pretty much the exact problem, actually. It already happened in naval. When they made a big damage model change about a year ago, their were massive fram-rate drops constantly. What happened was, they increased the amount of fragments that could be modeled per-shell. Once ships started getting hit, the insane amount of shells that needed dozens of fragments to be processed would damn near cripple the server until enough people died. I can only imagine how bad it would be in ground with auto-cannons creating hundreds of fragments per second, multiplied by a few dozen instances of this at any one moment. @@FoquroC31

Had a debate about this in wt forums. Gepard could be upgraded to use them but no gepard was upgraded to the version of the gun that allows ahead (gdf003 is gepards gun, ahead needs like gdf005 and above)@@yamatokurusaki5790
Does ahead really explode vehicles irl either? I've always thought it just damages the airframe so much that it's not possible to repair it, but they can maybe fly for a while.
Fun fact, you can switch to irst tracking so the plane you are tracking doesn't know you are locked on to them with the pgz09 (Also can lock with radar dish down)

Also IRST lock has less sway than regular radar lock, making it more accurate.
Unfortunately the lock with radar down does not work after the update... So they technically shadow nerfed it for some reason
@@Love_Letter_Typewriter except i dont think ahead is able to fuse properly with irst, its not a reliable way of judging distance. you would need radar for that
@@daholl8942 IIRC the PGZ09 has an advanced track radar that allows it to gather range data from IRST. AHEAD works with IRST in game, I checked myself.

Ahead may seem a little buggy right now but it's a massive upgrade for two reasons: It has no tracer and allows you to reliably counter ATGM based helicopters.

When planes get closer you should use the IR tracking. Its far more accurate than the radar lock (+ it doesnt get confused when enemies are flying low to the ground) and it also has thermals. They make spotting planes and helis way easier
I mean there’s very little reason to use standard radar. It can alert targets and is pretty wonky.

Try brining the vehicle you get the fastest nukes in and set a timer just like the cas challenge, and see how many nukes you can get in a certain amount of time with said vehicle.

its perfectly accurate with IRST, my Hitrate is so much better on the PGZ than the Gepard just because of it

Attempt number 49 at getting Spookston to play any tank with a dozer blade, the catch is, he has to dig in before engaging targets. Movement around the map is allowed, but he has to dig in again before reengaging.
5:49 im pretty sure the lead indicator is the same as for proxy where it shows lead needed tl hit directly, with AHEAD hitting directly wont let the round fuse so maybe aim slightly infront of the indicator

Attempt 41 Challenge: For high tier support a nations MBT with its respective APC/IFV counterpart (ie Abrams/Bradley, T90/BMP2M, etc.) Challenge is keeping the other player alive and supporting it without stealing kills (breaking barrels, tracking, repairing, etc) it being a random should help make it interesting.
Switching to IRST instead of the radar track is a lot less wobbly (This is also true for the Type 87)

i love the pgz09. it was one of the SPAA's that i got a nuke in (this was back then type 16 fps and other light tank premiums was running around the 8.7 bracket). the gepard is arguably better but this has thermals and IRST for accurate tracking of aerial targets and now AHEAD
my only gripe is the -2 degrees of depressoin
btw. if if didnt see it. the PGZ09 has IRST which gives a more accurate tracking lead. its Y-1-4 on the selection screen thing

The best strat with SPAAs like that is to wait for the enemy planes to begin their attack runs. They'll have less distance and therefore space to maneuver

Finally actually working ahead
29th time challenging Spookston to bring the Char 25t into an 8.3 lineup, and then incrementally increase the BR to find when the tank becomes unironically unplayable.
Spookston not firing in front of the lead indicator on planes in level flight/diving is killing me.
the way to play this thing is use the gen 2 (maybe gen 3) thermals and radar to lock on to targets and switch to irst so that the box doesnt bounce around. if you use only irst you will have to find targets yourself to lock on to but that is also very easy because thermals and good optics. the max radar range can be changed to 20km so thats also very useful on large maps

SPAA radar doesn't account for the plane's acceleration, which is probably why all your shells explode behind your target if they're in a dive.

Honestly I find it more useful to just use the normal belt since it usually take a couple dozen hits from ahead to kill something and only one hit from the ap most of the time bit more conservative on the ammo.
