War Thunder often has some fairly questionable battle rating decisions. One example is moving the Soviet IS-2 heavy tank up to 6.7, the same BR as tanks like the King Tiger and T26E5. The IS-2 used to be one of my favorite tanks to play, but volumetric shells changed that.

Ah, the IS-2. I got it to grind the Soviet tree, seeing what a menace it was in downtiers. However, here are some fun facts I learned about it.
1. 90% are full uptiers, so fighting vehicles from the 80s is not unusual.
2. It’s the same battle rating as such things like the Tiger 2 and the T34, that are better than it in every way.
3. A 122 to a tank’s barrel does indeed NOT break it.
4. Despite having a 19mm fuse, it will not fuse on many vehicles.
5. Despite having 200 mm of pen, it will not pen many vehicles.
6. An M26 driver can eat an entire 122 APHE and save the tank.
7. A duster driver can eat an entire 122 APHE and save the vehicle.
8. CAS magnet.
9. The IS 2 fuel is more explosive than nuclear bombs.
10. Using this tank has taught me to be a rat.
I would like to add that :
1. Milk trucks can and will survive a 122mm round directly into the chassis (Gaijin pls bring back hull break)
2. No matter the caliber, a Panther’s mantlet is the closest thing in the universe to an immovable object
3. The loader is the most vital member of the crew
4. They call it a heavy tank just because it’s slow
5. Good thing you don’t have to aim for weakspots, because they would have to really try in order to not hit yours
I've found myself enjoying it as a backup to my 2S3M and 2S1 for engames. Most people got their big scary heavies out of the way and you don't see enough people in endgame for the reload to be much issue. It's also increadibly ratty as you can just annihilate anything that isn't a T32 (it can actually pen a T34's ufp and front turret weakspots, or a tiger 2H's slightly angled side armor as it's only 80mm). Your biggest enemies are:
-vlad on his toyota pickup with bertha, his heavy machinegun
-that one vk30.02M that for some reason has the same pen as you, enough he filler to oneshot you and a quarter of the reload. Same obviously applies to every. Fcking. Medium tank at that br bracket
-bombs.
-a slightly concave terrain
@@mhplayerYou can pen T32 Ufp in the MG port but you need to aim to do that while T32... Well as it was said before, he really needs to try his best to not OS you cuz IS2 armor is a thing.

I do find the IS-2 and large-caliber cannons in general hilariously bad in War Thunder with Volumetric, the system definitely helps tanks behave a bit more properly with their armor but at the same time, the larger the gun the more wonky the whole system feels. Whilst I understand how we've arrived at this situation, I very much disagree with the 122 not penning OBVIOUSLY overmatched armor.
For the statistics people in the chat an IS-2 with standard APHE is a 25kg(55lb) shell, leaving the barrel at 800m/s(2600 ft/s roughly 300ft/s slower than an M4 carbine 5.56x45mm rifle bullet) which at 1km distant generates roughly 1761 lbf on average on impact or UP TO 3522 lbf. (just for reference a Compact Smart Car weighs in at 1500 lbs, standard Chevy Impala is about 3600-3800 lbs) On top of that when range drops to 500m, roughly double the force amounts. I'm just gonna leave this here, at best you're being hit by a Compact Smart Car, at worst its a full-size family sedan worth of force smacking into your vehicle on a concentrated point (there are pictures of German tanks that were shot in WW2 by an IS-2 or 122mm cannon in general btw, feel free to google that and have a looksee) Hint: it didn't end well.
Added: For anyone going to try and rip me a new one for *not accurate numbers* I literally just used a calculator on Bullet Impact I am by no means a specialist or something crunching numbers or reciting facts saying "I can't be wrong". I'm sure the numbers vary in a lot of cases, everything here is an approximation based on paper statistics, even so, that's an eyebrow raising amount of force transfer
(Nor do I expect full realism in War Thunder or want it, I think a middle-ground compromise that still makes the game fun is the best option)
Sure it has some power , but it can't be more energy than the IS2 itself has to withstand . The recoil has the same power as the shell , simple law of physics . Some things like muzzle brake lowers it , but a huge amount of energy stays .
@@5co756 I don't disagree, just wanted to point out, I believe the IS-2 has 2 short recoil stabilizers on top of the breech as well as the weight of the gun/breech itself and the side/rear diverting muzzle break. Unless the energy required to propel the shell is greater than the weight of the barrel/strength of the breech internals it shouldn't be a problem to be launching rounds down range
*I should also mention that the IS-2 (along with alot of guns/cannons/tanks) don't necessarily have to withstand the force of the impact, just the force required to bring a much smaller, lighter object to a relatively high speed given the explosion of the propellant. Which has somewhere to go besides being completely contained, it will push the shell down the barrel with the expanding gases from the propellant ignition and once it exits the muzzle, the gases will be diverted along with a majority of that force. Though the cannon *does* need to withstand the peaks of pressure created by this interaction
@@richardzehe1552 The force or energy is the same , imagine accelerating a 25kg shell at 800m/s in milliseconds . This is Newtons third law , you can't trick that . 😅
It's not like you shoot a 25kg shell out of the barrel and on impact it hits the tank with a pick up truck at 800m/s . That's like if somebody gets hit with a shotgun in movies and flys 5m back , the shooter would also fly 5m back .
@@5co756 Not to make this comment thread anymore unbearably long but bear with me. I did specifically avoid saying a vehicle "moving at 800m/s", which seems to be the misinterpretation/miswording here that I've caused, to clarify no, I do not think another tank being hit by a 25kg shell moving 800m/s is the same as a vehicle moving at 800m/s. It would be roughly the same amount of force as being hit by a 3500lb vehicle (roughly a family sedan) moving at 96.1m/s (215mph) If that helps to clarify. I Wasn't sure what common place item many people, who aren't very involved in learning about force delivered to a target vs. Projectile Energy would find commonplace. A better comparison would be to state that a 5.56x45mm FMJ (55grains) produces about 1,294 ft/lbs of muzzle *energy* HOWEVER it would only exert a maximum of 0.79 lbf *against a target at a range of 1km.* I did notice however that I used ft/lbs in place of lbf in some places and will correct that in previous comments as they are separate measurements with different purposes. I should also point out that recoil felt for the IS-2 and its crew is not the same as being hit by the projectile; energy dispersion time differences, vehicle weight, cannon component strengths etc. the recoil from the gun of the IS-2 is dispersed over a longer period of time than say the Impact of the shell on target. 1-2 seconds of energy dispersion vs. milliseconds for the impact of the projectile. Another reason why cannons have very large heavy components and are usually found on even heavier vehicles along with having recoil dampening systems in place. For the same reasons that when you shoot a rifle, the rifle doesn't recoil hard enough to go through your shoulder the same as the bullet would, that along with the width, height, etc. of the buttstock against your shoulder and the overall firearms weight. M56 is another good example, 90mm shell but it kicks the front end of the vehicle up to a foot or more off of the ground when it fires; the vehicle is not heavy enough to mitigate the recoil effectively but the breach and barrel are strong enough to withstand the blast inside moving the shell. Not so much a trick of newtons law but you are giving that force a place to go with the equal and opposite force exerted within the cannon. This is also what keeps a cannon from say, ripping the turret off the tank that is firing it, recoil absorption and mitigation along with lots of meticulous vehicle design.
I appreciate the respectful way you went about having this discussion and I apologize for how long this all ended up being, I definitely could have worded several things better 😅
anyways, cheers
Man, I have such a love-Hate relationship with the IS-2. Sometimes it IT go boom, sometimes I go boom
It be like that, its gun is still great for the br besides the occasional bs where it crumples against armor a 122mm probably shouldn't. Its armor seems very unreliable tho and the tall siluette that im glad IS 3 seems to fix. Sometimes the armor works wonders, sometimes it can't stop a fart downwind. Ik it has weak spots like any tank but wiggle em or nah the enemies tend to land their shots even over great distances. Best method this far seems sidescraping while hiding the front behind a big rock or building tho, unless they got heat.

Honestly the only reason the IS-2 or any 122mm gun feels so bad is Volumetric, the smallest section of armor even a 10mm sheet metal plate will act like its made out of the core of a neutron star.
the IS-2 used to be one of my fav tanks in the entire game now its just.. depressed and sad due to how many times my BR-471D has been stopped by a German Gun ball mount / Coax Gun barrel or the driver view ports of tanks
Honestly the only reason the IS2 is still viable at 6.7 is either reverse driving IS2s and also BS Volumetric armor. The amount of times I've bounced IS2 mantlets/turret fronts in 76mm/90mm/88mms drives me insane...
I used to love it too had a lot of fun with it. Even with volumetric it used to do fine. I lost the faith in it when it non penned panther turret from front (i know it can go through panther front plate) but still. Gaijin has nerfed the 122 in few recent updates, sometimes it just non pens, bounces or does nothing. Pair that with the horrible reload speed it does not feel worth it. At least is3 has armor benefit, is2's whole huge lower front plate is a weak spot.

it was worth the wait with regular is2, but since is2 1944 can already have difficulties penning targets in uptier the 20 seconds really becomes a pain. Can't imagine how unreliable that gun becomes with is3 and above. I mean yeah aiming has a lot to do with it, but in some situations you gotta be quick on your feet and risk it or die, if you miss the weak spot big deal take cover and try again right? well with other tanks anyway, with IS tanks if you miss a weak spot and non pen, you either A: lose 20% of your sanity from wasting a chance and having to wait humiliating 20 seconds, or B: they know you have a long reload and will just rush you. If i need to aim for tiny weakspots like anyone else but have twice the reload i don't think its a good tradeoff to have big boom anymore. The problem with the IS2 is that volumetric, the fuse time and the reload ruin the offensive capabilities of the IS2.
On top of that the BR its in is to high, it faces vehicles that were build right at the end of the war or post-war. Things like the Super Pershing that were a prototype and only a few were ever build, those tanks are comparable to a IS3, being built around the very end of the war and never saw combat during ww2.

Day 21 of asking Spookston to play the Sk 105A2
I think the IS-2 has the same problem as the Tiger II, it's an amazing almost OP tank when it's top tier and it absolutely sucks when its low tier. The whole 6.0-6.7 range is just somewhat broken in that regard.
Is it really though? The IS-2 has a lot more weak spots and the lacks the fast (comparatively) reload of the Tiger II, so it can't capitalize on downtiers nearly as well.
@@russman3787 I don't mean they are the same. They're actually quite different despite being "heavy tanks".
But both are hard to kill in a down tier and kill almost anything they face in one shot.
What the IS-2 lacks in reload speed it makes up in size, the much smaller profile makes it easier to hide and take cover.
The armour protection is less on paper but it's stalinium with weird angles that magically bounces shots, so who knows.
I do think the Tiger II is a better tank in the game tho, if you play it right.

Since volumetric made the 122 a nightmare to use, you can try the T-44 with the 85mm gun. It's quite fast, it can sometimes tank a poorly aimed AP shell but the gun is not strong enough for most things frontally, so you gotta flank them. And seeing that you love that playstyle, i think you can make it work.

What I don't understand is why the IS-2s got nerfed. I understand Russian bias is a bit of a thing in War Thunder, but not for the IS-2. Even back when the 1943 model was 5.7 and the 1944 model was 6.3, they weren't considered very good because of that lengthy reload. But now they're 6.3 and 6.7 respectively and they're just not up to snuff compared to the King Tigers or the T34 heavy tank.
Not to mention that they’re also going up against tanks from the 70s and 80s in many cases. I don’t even like seeing the PT-76 to be honest, it just ruins the immersion of a WWII tank on a WWII battlefield and all the sudden seeing a light tank from the early 1950s. I’m not ready yet for the game to turn into a Korean War/ Operation Unthinkable simulator.
Got to love a Spookston video the second you wake up. 😀

Anytime I hear "hull break", my brain just flashes that one picture of the panther with a massive hole in the left back side of the turret.
Spookston just finding out about the invincible hand of Emperor Hirohito just making shells disappear after hitting the weakest spots of the Type 61
"We have 1 kill and aren't dead" is basically what you can expect from this tank. IS2 was my first late war heavy and it made me quit WT for a few years lmao
Was going to play the IS-3, IS-4, IS-6 but when i realized how painful is the 122mm to use and the amount of heat vehicle, i gave up and went straight for t-10 and t-54
New Spookston challenge: eat a fortune cookie before each match while playing the Phong Kong T34
I'm always surprised at how much I hear "X vehicle doesn't belong at Y BR" yet when I actually go and play those BRs they're full of those exact tanks
babe wake up, new Spookston just dropped
that fortune cookie gave me an idea, what if you take the most luck dependant tank and before each game eat one and follow it's message durring that game
"I've been looking forward to this" - Count Dooku
i love hiding in the IS2, i usually get 4 to 6 kills before i get revenge bombed, its even funnier in an uptier, because almost everything has thinner armor
This is my most used and most successful tank in WT and when I was still actively playing even the regular IS2 was 6.7, it was a rollercoaster, but the old 122mm sound made up for the lows. I was certainly not pissed when I didn't go through a Tiger II H's(6.7 as well lmao) turret front only for it to sneeze at me, go through the chassis front plate at a degen angle and have the shell explode almost in the engine bay or go through the front of the turret, hit the breech and still have the shell carry on into the face of the Commander.
Had a match with 3.7 Sweden today in which I think I got somewhat posessed by Spookston's CAS Annoyance... long story short, 4 air kills with the L-62 ANTI II and 3 more with the J26 David.
The fortune cookie bit was honestly so funny
