How Bad Was The IS-3?

  • Since I couldn't stop talking about how great the Soviet IS-2 heavy tank was, I figured I would balance it out by talking about its less auspicious successor, the IS-3. The IS-3 terrified the Western Allies when it appeared in the Berlin victory parade, but while impressive on the outside, it was plagued with a number of issues that saw its production cut short.

The IS-10 (later renamed and better known as T-10, I'm calling it IS-10 to emphasise its connection to the IS family of tanks) has arguably perfected the design. Well, maybe not perfected. Nothing is really perfect, but it was the epitome of the IS series. It saw the longest production run of any IS tank, as well as the longest service time. Most IS variants were only in production for 2 years. The IS-10 was in production for 13 years, and saw service for almost 45 years. As for the IS-7, while the IS-7 was promising, it's weight and cost made it unappealing, thus it never left the prototype phase. Many of the shortcomings from previous IS tank designs would be resolved in the IS-10, including the weight and cost issues that plagued the IS-7.

The IS-3 went through continuous upgrades every few months since they first came off the production lines in 1946. The first major upgrade package called IS-3M started in 1952, and featured a plethora of updates. It was then updated into its final form in 1957 after the Hungarian uprising, and those models were among the many sent to Egypt that were used in 1967. The tank remained in use in the USSR all the way until the early 1970s which is pretty impressive considering it was replaced by the T-10 and T-64. So there was some serious effort to keep them in inventory.

If I'm being honest if the IS-3 was given the 100mm I think it'd have been a better tank for sure. Also I've sat inside an IS-3, and I gotta say, its rather cramped. The turret positions aren't as bad as I would have thought, although commander visibility is disappointing. But the drivers position is absolutely horrendous, and I was almost too tall for it and I was only 5 foot 6 inches at the time. The hatch is absolutely tiny, I actually got in the position through the turret, rather than try to get in through the hatch.

    • @kobeh6185
      @kobeh6185 Před 11 měsíci +3

@taistelusammakko5088 funny you mention that because the Object 248 (IS-100) is in the game.
As for 122 vs 100, in the post war environment and logistics the IS-3 found itself in, the 100mm ammunition would have been more logistically consistent, and you would be able to carry more of it in the tank.
Later 100mm HE rounds from Post-WW2 actually have pretty impressive power.
I would think a 100mm gun, double the rate of fire, and significantly more ammo on the tank would make up for the single shot potential of the 122mm D-25.
I'm aware of why it was selected, but honestly it appears the IS-3 would have had more longevity with a 100mm rifle.

2:50 IS-3s weren't sent to the European theatre, but there is evidence that they were used against Japan in Manchuria and the Kuril islands. So, it most likely was used in WW2
3:39 The engine was not really unreliable. You can find videos on youtube of Russian seperatists in Ukraine starting an IS-3 that had been left on display for decades. Compare that to other WW2 tanks, which require pretty intense maintenance to stay in running order
3:45 Cracks in the turret were a problem with early production IS-3s, but this was slowly resolved as Soviet casting techniques improved. Same goes for the hull.
All around this is definitely better than your old IS-3 video, but I still think you rely on Zaloga too much when there are preserved primary sources from the '40s that you could be using. Zaloga wrote about the IS-3 in 1997, long before the internet gave us direct access to formerly classified soviet documents, and more importantly, he doesn't speak Russian so his ability to gather and interpret sources largely relies on his translators.

A possible depiction of the Leningrad Kirov (LK) IS-3 is the IS-2U, it is a modernization project for the IS-2 via implementing a pike nose, it may be the design the LK plant had, and the latter Chelyabinsk Kirov (CK) Plant may be the Kirovets-1, which is an early design to the IS-3.
Both of these are vehicles from World of Tanks and it's Blitz version so the info may be a bit foggy, Wargaming's depiction of the IS-2U is the WZ-110 Chinese heavy tank, and the Kirovets-1 is a standalone heavy tank, and is the stock turret for the IS-3, the WZ-112-2 is also similar looking to the Kirovets-1.

Get the T26E5 while it's still 6.3. It's a good tank for the 6.3 lineup. Tbh I do overal worse in it then in the regular Pershing, but most people seem to have great success with it. Great armor, but you still gotta be careful with the long 88s and the russian 122s.
Regarding the XM-1, hm well yes and no. Don't really recommend it, if you're new to the toptier environment, but if you're really stuck with the grind, why not. Use your backups on it until you get some backup vehicles for the BR. The XM-1 is very fast but has a very mediocre/subpar gun. It will however teach you to shoot at weakspots. Usually no armor to rely on and having no smoke grenades makes it a bit tricky to use sometime, as the reload of the gun is often too long for you to afford loading smoke shells. If you have the spare money, sure why not, I don't see rank 8 happening soon, so it's still relevant.

@@Phantom-bh5ru nope I'm stating a actual fact based on the information of it's pros and cons example the pros of the Maus are it's long 125mm and it's 75mm gives the Maus a excellent offensive capabilities to just destroy or damage badly most type level 4 armor with a single shot from a long distance while in medium I'd say 50%chance since it's second gun is a 75mm depending on the tank that gets close to it that is the second pro would be it's defensive capabilities sure it could probably take a serious beating from other vehicles depending on which gun they have and if they have a higher caliber needed to take one down unless you're more than one then the Maus is in big trouble .
Now on to the cons for starters it's size makes it a huge target for fighter bombers, the second con is all that heavy defensive armor makes the Maus slow and incapable of either try to catch up with other heavy German armor since we are talking about a level 5+ in armor type also it weighted 188 tons making it the heaviest vehicle ever this however was a problem since at that time there wasn't a single bridge in Europe that could withstand the vehicle's weight and lastly it would've been expensive just to make one and the German economy back then was in shambles and so was their supplies and let's not forget production time which would have been a serious hassle to make just one.
Overall it would've been a waste of resources in both the long run and in short term also most German tanks were fuel suckers especially the tiger I and Ferdinand with the former being better suited than the latter.
