Most precision machine shops will teach to insert the telescope gage collapsed, allow it to spring open(so long as the bore is not sensitive OR easily deformed), Then tilt the gage at an angle so that it is at a larger diameter than the bore to be measured. Lightly tighten the stem of the telescope gage and then sweep it out of the bore where it will record the bore size. hopefully that makes sense.
also dont ever rock a dial bore gage by the indicator, use the insulated part of the handle.
love yalls videos but this is teaching bad habits.
keep up the great work and lets all keep improving and inspiring the next generation of manufacturing professionals!!!

great to know that the 'analogue' way is still out there :-) one other plus with it is that you never have to replace the battery.

    Nice Video!
Like the Digimatics, but concerned about the 3-point measurement for a cylinder shown later in the video for an reciprocating engine bore that has thrust loads.
I am working on a Toyota/Yamaha 2zz-ge engine and have measured bore at three depths and two axis. Although my measurement system is only capable of 0.01mm accuracy, the relative deference as shown on my bore gauge indicates my block is "out-of-spec".
Bummer, but I am looking to upgrade from my dial unit to a Mitutoyo Digimatic.
    Cheers,
    P

omg the telescoping gauge one was hilarious. the important thing is to make sure you are measuring on the caliper the EXACT way each time ie. repeatable. for me, its very gently seated and 2 clicks of the mic. thats what the click thing is there for! so you can repeat measurements, not so much for "fine" measurements, even though it is used for that.

this is great stuff. Wow. They way you talk is professional but unlike for me i just can't seem to 100% interpret it, i understand fully how it works or how to measure but which way the needle goes, counter clockwise or clockwise is my problem whether to subtract or add to the value of specification you already placed with the micrometer.

How would you approach measuring a taper?

    • @buboobuboo9100
      @buboobuboo9100 Před 4 lety

Maybe measure at the beginning of the taper and then make a separate measure at the end of the taper. There is probably some math formula to find the taper angle with these two numbers.

      Sorry for my humor.
The standard practice for measuring an engine cylinder bore is to measure just down from the head gasket surface 8-10mm (5/16-3/8in) in two directions 1) front to back (thrust load faces), 2) side to side (non thrust load faces).
Then repeat mid way down the bore and finally repeat again about 8-10mm 5/16-3/8in from the bottom of the bore.
This identifies bore size, taper and out-of-round.
Taper usually occurs in the top half of the cylinder bore due to ring wear.
For taper and out-of-round most manufacturers have a service limit of 0.05mm (0.002in) at which point it is to be refinished or replaced.
I hope that answered your question.
      Cheers!

I feel like I know even less than I did before watching this video. Is there a "How to do this for idiots who never went to machining school" video somewhere? :(

With Telescopic gauge we can't identify the ovality of the bore so bore gauge with dial indicator is best

There great for building lawn mowers. If your a serious engine builder never use this crap.

We note your trolling self doesn't pose an alternative. Professional machine shops (all kinds, including many doing much more precise work than auto engines, there's another world of precision in machinery building beyond race motors) often use Mitutoyo. I copy skilled machinists in aviation and industry. There's plenty of Mitutoyo gear in their shops.
