      You’ll be fine. In a 3rd year architectural design student at Pratt university. I didn’t even submit a portfolio to be admitted into the university. Main thing is showing you can grow. Architecture is a hard as fuck major and you’re gonna have a lot of sleepless nights when you first start out. As long as you have some good grades you can get into most schools. But you’ll be at a disadvantage when you first start out. Just don’t be discouraged.

It'll be really very helpful if you could upload a video about the different levels of examination or interviews before getting into Bartlett or few things to keep in mind before applying for bartlett and a little bit about the things the jurors look for in your portfolio or whatever documents we have to submit and also a little bit about the scholarship or funding methods available. hi! This is absolutely incredible. I'm a visual arts and design student, and I really want to go to ucl but i havent done much architectural pieces in the past. Any recommendations on what to focu on? Were these pieces/projects set by your teachers? (thanks for the video!)

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thats cool! I think visual arts have so much in common with architecture. Maybe try drawing with a story or prompt in mind? As in less focused on techniques but more of using techniques to tell a story, for example, a painting of your room if you could buy anything you wanted. Or what would it look like if you were to design a teddy bear or a pillow that's most suitable for visual arts students, idk just random things that you enjoy haha. Try to build a story around these things that you can explain to the viewer and point to parts of the drawing as you go along. In my humble opinion, architecture is mostly storytelling of why a thing looks like what it is so as long as you can explain the reason you drew a certain thing in a certain way, it's good! And better if what you're drawing is somewhat structural/inhabitable :) A few of the projects at the end were school projects, but mostly are ones i did outside of school with prompts that i decided!

  • @gayatrisalkar9805
    @gayatrisalkar9805 Před 3 lety +5

    Did all your projects have a purpose (were they made to be displayed somewhere or for a grade? Besides the UCL summer course one ofc) and is that necessary or would it be okay to just include art that I’ve made just at home for myself and specifically to include in a portfolio? Does the work absolutely have to show architectural thinking- be about other people and the outside world- or would it be okay to include purely cerebral and personal work?
    Could you tell me a little about what you included in your personal statement and if it was the same for AA as it was for UCAS?
    Thank you so much, this was incredibly helpful

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793  Před 3 lety +6

      Definitely put some personal works that aren't subject related in your portfolio, it shows that you have a "personality". I've 3 types of works in my portfolio, architectural ones(my thinking), personal ones(what i care about - lion painting), and school works(my other skills - digital illustrations), diversity is good! However, only put in your proudest works, they say your portfolio is as good as your worst piece in it haha, you want to aim for around 10 pages.
      For personal statement, i wrote two different ones for UCAS and AA, i actually made up my entire AA statement talking about a place i've never been to... but yea, you portfolio is much more important than you PS. AA's prompt was to describe your experience in a "space/building" that you enjoyed(reading online articles about architecture helps alot), and UCAS was just to talk about why you chose the program i think(get personal with this). Hope this helps!!

    Dumb question, but you drew/modelled the vast majority of these images? I’m planning on doing an architecture-based postgrad at UCL and am still putting together a portfolio but the issue is, I don’t have a strong art background (so no drawings from school etc) and I’m not a particularly good artist to begin with, so I’m stuck 🥲

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793  Před 11 měsíci

      Definitely too late to respond to this, but yeah what makes you interested in architecture? i think just use whatever medium you want to showcase that interest, film, photo, clay model, food, essay. I don't think you NEED a art background for it, but i do think it would be good to have the fundamentals of some form of design method (drawing, 3d modelling...) since you will eventually be designing

    Your portfolio was so good and your advice was very helpful. The layout was also something I would aim towards as I am applying to unis this year, I was wondering what software you used to make a professional-style, digital portfolio? and how you managed to import your sketches and studies to make them look seamless with the background slides?
    Thanks,
    Vivek

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793  Před 3 lety +6

      Vivek Shah tysm! So for the layout i used InDesign, which will take care of all ur future portfolio making throughout undergrads. You want to keep your layout as simple as possible (i kinda over-did it), because your works should be the main focus. Theres alot of InDesign tutorials out there so learning the basics shouldn’t be a problem(all u need is the basics). The most useful feature for me is the guidelines which you can use to keep your layout consistent so your entire portfolio can look cohesive! For examples of good layouts, just search up some professional architecture portfolio online, or use mine as a reference.
      Since my pages are mostly white, i simply scanned my sketches, and since they were done on white paper, no blending is needed :) and for paintings and pieces that you can’t scan, you can check out the tutorials on yt about photographing paintings/models. Hope this helps!

      Hey, to fully fund your studies? I think it's doable if you are paying local fees, you can find jobs at local firms for sure given you have the technical skills or experience. But if you're paying international fees then it's kind of impossible to fully fund it with part-time jobs...

    Hmm personally I'm missing the architecture in this, there's not a single actual space or building, it might sound ignorant but for me personally it's all very abstract and mostly art related. I have seen this before and I guess it has to do with the different styles of schools and degrees. I guess here in Italy we take a much more practical and applicable approach. I liked your portfolio's composition and layout though, the art is also good but I feel like most of these projects are a really good start and research, and initial concept. But I'm missing how that was applied to become an actual phisical structure.

      Completely understand your thoughts haha im very aware of this. I think there are many ways to design and at this level, i was more interested in learning how to visually combine references. I would say tho that this is still very much architecture, just not practical architecture, im sure you look at a lot of visual references yourself that might not be spatial and technical - Lebbeus woods for example :)
