My University PORTFOLIO for Architecture + TIPS | Ryerson & UofT

  • In this video, I discuss my thought process and thinking behind the creation of my architecture portfolio for university! There are a few tips and advice scattered around in the video :)
    Also, I forgot to mention that for Ryerson architecture, you also have to finish a 'home exercise' and bring it with you to the audition. My year's home exercise instructions was to take a 1L milk carton box and turn into anything with limited tools (scissors, glue, tape). The home exercise details are emailed to you two weeks before your chosen audition date.

    Great content! I think your portfolio tips apply fairly well to portfolios in general too: Only show your best work, keep it simple, and keep a variety.
    I noticed, however, annoying horizontal banding on your main front camera. The likely cause was a mismatch between shutter speed and a room light.
    Just something to watch out for in future videos. Keep up the great work!

    • @RayaKee
      @RayaKee  Pƙed 4 lety +6

      Yup, I didn't notice the banding until I was editing a few days after. So do I just slow down my shutter speed a bit? (Was shooting at 1/50)

    • @MKevinL2
      @MKevinL2 Pƙed 4 lety +5

      @@RayaKee That is indeed a possible fix. It depends on the relationship between the framerate, shutter speed, and how many Hz the light is running at. In general- the 180 shutter rule is your best bet, but moving to 1/60 shutter may be needed with some lights since you are in Canada (US & Canadian electricity runs at 60Hz- vs 50Hz for most of the world).
      Doing a quick test with your lights and different camera settings and comparing is my recommendation for finding best results.
      EDIT: Also check out some post de-flicker options! They can be a lifesaver when you don't have control of all the lights. I use Da Vinci Resolve Studio's built in deflicker plugin when needed. I'm sure the Adobe suite has similar plugins available.

    • @dua_junaid
      @dua_junaid Pƙed 3 lety +4

      @@AO-vj9gl Hey! I'll just let you know what I've learned here since I've just completed the application process, and am now waiting to hear back (which won't be until May 1st according to them). It's good that you're considering this early, assuming you aren't in Grade 12 yet so I'd advise you to be involved with Waterloo as much as possible before you even apply (they have webinars, contests, students you can talk to make sure you gather as much info as possible). Practice your skills as much as you can and grow so you can present to them the best of what you got when it comes to the application. Build up your work for your portfolio over time across different mediums, (digital work, paintings, drawings, photography, etc)... To show that you are able to be diverse in your practice- and have fun creating so you can talk passionately about it during the video presentation!
      The precis is honestly the hardest part, in my opinion, I did it at home and I didn't hand it in on time, unfortunately, so I think that will hinder my chances of getting accepted despite my great portfolio and presentation. Practice for the precis by reading articles and summarizing, making sure you are able to be original in how you rephrase. This is the unique time of Covid, so instead of an interview like they usually do you'd create a video presentation talking critically about 3 works from your portfolio, explain more why you want to go into architecture and what inspired you, and answer an architectural question they give you under 10 minutes. It's a tedious process, but you have many opportunities to show them who you really are. I could go on about what I've learned, but bottom line piece of advice: be original with your artwork (be _inspired,_ don't copy), and be you. :)
      If you want to check out some of the artwork I've gathered over time for my portfolio, here's my insta: @dua_j_art
      I hope this helps!

      @@dua_junaid I learned so much more from your comment than I expected, thank you so much! You're right, I'm not in Grade 12 yet so I will try to be as involved as I can with Waterloo. I have been involved with some of their contests, but I will take a look at the other things you've mentioned! I was particularly unsure of where to start with practicing for the precis, but your advice is so helpful for me to start. I'm looking into some online precis courses so hopefully that'll help, haha. I'd love to follow your Instagram and look at your work - thank you again, I really appreciate it! 💙

    Loved the video! I like how in-depth you go into the process! I just wanted to ask does the portfolio work HAVE to be in some way related to architecture? I only decided to try for the program late in my grade 12 year and I don't have much experience with building design;-;

    • @RayaKee
      @RayaKee  Pƙed 3 lety +2

      Thanks! Appreciate it.
      Ideally, an architecture portfolio has to showcase transferrable skills to architecture. (E.g. technical skills, resourcefulness, spacial/perspective awareness, overall creativity, etc.). So, while archi portfolios don’t necessarily have to include “architectural work” per se, the works do have to be relevant.
      What this means is that- even though you have a late start and have less time- try your best to find strategic and creative ways to get the most “bang for your buck” in terms of the portfolio pieces you invest your time and energy in.

Most of the portfolios I’ve seen submitted to these universities are mainly digital art, photography, sculptures etc and I’m not experienced in any of that unfortunately. So I wanted to ask, would JUST traditional art (like normal paintings sketches using art supplies etc) be okay? Or would that put me at a disadvantage and not meet the requirement? I would really really really appreciate a reply. Thank you so much!

      1 - For my portfolio, it was an accumulation of the best work I'd done from grade 9 to 12 (most of it was from grade 11 and 1st semester of grade 12 since auditions were held early 2020).
      2 - You don't have to be the best or most talented artist to build a great portfolio! I myself will be the first to say that I was just average in my arts program. I really believe that creating a solid portfolio you're proud of is just a matter of building your skills and putting in the work over time. Anyone can do it if they commit to it.
      3 - Yes, I am mostly self-taught, but being in an arts program throughout high school helped immensely.
      Hope that helped!

    Hello, I have a few questions. And I really loved your portfolio, very well organized and decent.
    Does the time of my art, or when I did it matters? Like I have pieces from 2018, is it okay if I put them into my portfolio?
    And my art works are graded by my teacher. So basically I took technical drawing in grades 11 and 12 classes and they are graded by my teacher. The grades appear on my paper like a huge 10/10 or 9/10, will they be ok with it if I submit that?
    I use camscan to take pics for my art works, any other suggestions besides because it appears blurry on my phone...thank you

    • @RayaKee
      @RayaKee  Pƙed 2 lety +2

      1. I'm not sure if it makes too much of a difference, but as a general best practice try to put your most recent work in your portfolio (within 3 years).
      2. Try your best to crop the part where your teacher marked over your work, but if that's not possible you could download a trial of Photoshop to try to remove it (you can search up tutorials for this). Also, you could always keep it as it is, but I can imagine that it would be super distracting and would detract from the professionalism of your technical drawings and portfolio in general.
      3. If your photos are coming out blurry, try to take them where there's more light (e.g. beside a window). I'd avoid using scanner apps because they usually change the perspective and overall colours of the photo.
      Hope this helps and happy you found the video helpful!

      @RayaKee  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      hmm that IS a tough situation to be in - but remember that most are also in a similar situation as you, in the sense that everyone's been stuck doing online school!
      While you won't be able to compete with other more technically skilled and well-trained students, you CAN use that to your advantage and use more of your creativity and resourcefulness instead to stand out. Your portfolio doesn't (and shouldn't) have to be limited to 2-D pieces and traditional mediums!
      Make sure to play to your strengths, whatever those may be (random example: custom shoes, if you're into that), and do a lot of experimentation on your own and researching and looking for inspiration (not plagiarism) online! CZcams is honestly one of the best places to start.
      Also, universities nowadays are looking for diversity in skill and artistic backgrounds in the students they select, so as long as you can find a way to stand out, you'll have a chance.
      Hope this helps and good luck on your portfolio Kaviya!

      I was in an intensive visual arts program at my high school (unionville high school) and it was mandatory to have 2 art courses every year- so I had 2 art courses in grade 12.
      Keep in mind though that most of these projects were completed in my 2nd sem of grade 11 and 1st sem of grade 12 since the portfolio had to be finished in early February.
      Hope this helps and good luck with applications!

 I’m thinking if I should retake the course or not, I’m positive to get a over 93%ish GPA however I’m very worried about my precal 11 score. I have a mentor for my portfolio and is pretty positive if putting together a good one, what do u think?

      Hello! It's so awesome to see you planning ahead so early!
      As for grades, I believe UofT only looks at the average of your top 6 grade 12 marks, so as long as those top marks are good then you shouldn't need to worry about your lower grades.
      Hope that helps and good luck with uni applications :)

      Hey Emily!! Export your 15 pages as a PDF, then try compressing it here:
