      tbh i don't really think about them in those categories, i know what them mean but i mostly just start with a cube, a ball or a planar srf extrusion for irregular shapes. I'm still unfamiliar with subDs but yeah i just mash simple shapes together most of the time :) i think to improve modelling just requires a lot of time spent in the software and a willingness to watch yt tutorials lol

    Hi I'm nico, this is my first year of studying architecture and enginering, I have been following your projects for a couple of years. After watching this video the first thing that pops to mind in the theme of Home Space would be how you can apply intelligent storing in these appartement-units, usually council housings are small in size, so optimizing ways to keep our objects organized is important to make the room feel bigger than it actually is. Although you probably already know him, i would reccomend you have a look at Gary Chang's work in his "Nano House" where he faces challenges of compact living, or also in his "Suitcase house", these could also be of use as references. On another note, I think everyone studying architecture knows how big of a responsability we will hold in the future in making self-sustainable and also community-orientated spaces, even though the needs of today might not be the same as a population's needs centuries ago, the role this profession in guiding it towards resolving these needs remans throughout time. With that being said you could empthasize even further on how these units have enviromental beneficial aspects (i would recomend you check out "arcorn land labs", which develop self-built sustainable sistems under the idea of solarpunk) and a role in making the neighborhood of Catford more self-suistaned oriented (maybe by thinking about how these built-units can be recycled once the person has stoped living in them, to think about their "afterlife", showing that you had a thought about the further future). Finally i think you had great ideas that i would develop even further, like the kiosk of imagination or how the wall-composition in the units can be custmized to one's liking by residents, best of luck in this project! Ps: you might want to think about how shared space in these buildings are designed and present them as equally important as the housing-units.

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793 Před 8 měsíci

      Hi Nico, thank you so much for your comment, i really appreciate it! Just looked at Gary Changs suitcase house, it's so luxurious which was unexpected to me lol. Acorn Labs is a cool channel, small scale sustainable living which can definitely feed into parts of my strategies whether it will be for one room or for the building's own farm or rain gathering system. Recycling of these self-built units is going to be big, absolutely agree with you. I'm looking at construction methods that are dissassembly-friendly at the moment such as this bad boy (twitter.com/SustainableTall/status/1650764852787548163), feel free to give me suggestions! And yeah customization is big, working on designing some joineries(how exactly are things connected together without permanent joints), great point. Shared spaces - for sure! Right now i'm starting to design the first floor which will include a lot of interactive elements for the public, and maybe use the roof for the renters as a hangout - most council housing in the uk has no roof terrance so that could potentially be a good response. The ground floor will probably be something like Assembly House 150, a pretty cool reference of a workshop+exhibition space. Such a well considered feedback, thank you so very much!! PS. I will design a room specifically to address your feedback :)

      @@kelvindoesarchitecture6793 Sorry for answering so late, i just had my first exam today so i have been studying all week. Indeed Gary Chang's houses have that feeling to them, when in fact being quite simple. The trick is having big free spaces, as he does really well in "domestic transformer", the space is extremely configurable, up to 21 different combinations throughout the day, adding even further flexibility while keeping a spacious central area. You are right to think about how sustainability can be applied to the building as a whole, maybe you might want to have a look at old architecture-tech like the ancient persian Windcatchers (Badguir). About joineries, my initial thought was to study how intelligent assembly and disasembly of pavilions are curently done. Since they are only temporary structures, architects most definitely already had a thought about that, but you might know more about that than I do. Otherwise you should get inspired by the way "Sashimono" is applied to japanese furniture and see how this type of thinking and development can be applied to a larger scale. I didn't know about Assembly House 150, it looks like a good idea to be implemented in this project. Unfortunately the only shared-space i can think of at the moment is roman insulae since the exam was on architecture history haha btw i am flatered about the feedback-adressed room and curious to what the end-project will look like, keep us updated!

    Beautiful concept, definitely do more or these! It’s a great way to unify education. Accessibility wise, who can experience your kiosk, have you considered disabilities. Structurally for you retro fit building, how will it sound. What acoustic and ritual process does that space already provide and how can you design with that in mind. How do you change or make the most of your communal spaces within the building. Fire safe stair wells. Similarly for the retro fitting; what’s your second purpose. If you’re building internal renovation what other community possibilities are there. Can you have kinetic doors. How would you reuse someone’s “optional living design” Reply One Architect Greg Keeffe - created a whole Extention to his own personal home with reused materials, from skips and waste around the area. Using sheep’s wool for insulation. He currently lives in a Net zero home he also constructed sustainably. And has many RIBA Awards. One Example a project in Manchester where by he acquired numerous storm damaged timber from France. A difficult thing with self building is who is your mediator, who limits creative expression. Have you created a new role for the client. Does this not limit the responsibilities of chartered professionals such as structural engineers, project managers and architects. How do you relocate and manage services. What are their limits. How large is your “ikea” catalogue. Does it negate the professional relationship of the client and the “design team” It would be very difficult to create a professional multidisciplinary agreement. Why are you limiting your reuse of materials to the local area. A challenge for you, could have your spaces be an urban quiet room. How much noise can you negate from the area. How would this change the space. Read- Programs and manifestoes on 20th -century architecture, Ulrich Conrads pg 46 (First year student from QUB) Just some ideas and questions 🙈.

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793 Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you very much! Definitely looking to keep this up especially after reading highly informative responses like yours! I have indeed not thought about disabilities for the kiosk, great point - will be sure keep that in mind for my next design. Acoustics could play a big part, something i've almost forgotten. It will be a big focus when i begin to design the stages of temporary housing for people constructing their units, as in where will people live when they are constructing their "more permanent" flats and also how do tenants that have already moved in deal with the noise pollution of a neighbor's house getting build! Maybe part of it will be resolved through construction methods as well, low noise construction. Greg Keeffe seems like a great proof that building recycling is feasible, thank you for sharing! Can't seem to find too much on his actual house, please share if you have more info of any websites! In terms of services, im still looking for a detail design report for this building, hopefully it will help with knowing what's already in place. My "ikea" catalogue will probably develop with each design, i will probably have a few very detailed components catalogued that can be reused throughout the building, for example no mortar brick wall construction techniques like this one (twitter.com/SustainableTall/status/1650764852787548163) which i will be doing a personal reinterpretation on. And the idea right now is that each room will have a simplified counterpart that teaches how it was constructed, similar to Assembly House 150's exhbition "rooms/mini structures" along with construction manuals. Design team. Great point, have given this more thought lately and had a discussion with my tutors last week. There will be a design team - architect, carpenter etc. on site as mediators and mentors to ensure safety and to maximaze the client/self-builder's design and construction freedom in terms of pushing the boundaries of what they can acheive. Not exactly sure on the meaning of professional multidisciplinary agreement and urban quiet room, as in a contract between the professionals involved and a quiet building? Also what is pg 46 about if you mind summarizing :) Thank you for your amazing feedback, so many incredible ideas!! PS. will design a room(s) catered to your reponse, construction period temporary homes, home for the disables etc. Best of luck in First Year!

    • @kelvindoesarchitecture6793
      @kelvindoesarchitecture6793 Před rokem

      what a great topic of discussion, i feel ya, i've at many points felt that (maybe not in this project but in my year 2 project and in practice). In my case, i think my method of dealing with it is to step back and see why i'm losing interest. Is it that there is nothing in architecture that interests me or is it this specific task or project that is boring me. If it's architecture in its entirety, i might take a break and do other stuff, there's no shame in developing a new interest. In my case, it was usually the task in the project that i either didn't understand what i was doing or was doing something that i didn't enjoy. And for this, if i absolutely had to complete the task i would then take longer breaks in between or grind it out quickly lol and then hopefully move onto something more interesting. If it doesn't absolutely have to be done and i haven't spent tooooo much time on it yet, i would just go a different direction towards whatever i'm interested in at that point and work on finding some good justifications to why i have switched topics per say. If you're doubting interest in architecture overall, why do you think that is? I'm genuinely curious :) and it's completely cool that you are, i've felt that way
