Anderson Cooper’s tribute to his friend Anthony Bourdain

  • In death, as in life, Anthony Bourdain brought us closer together.
On his award-winning series, "Parts Unknown," Bourdain brought the world home to CNN viewers. Through the simple act of sharing meals, he showcased both the extraordinary diversity of cultures and cuisines, yet how much we all have in common.
Tragically, he proved this again on Friday. Bourdain's death shook television viewers around the world. The most common sentiment: "I feel like I've lost a friend."

I never actually met him, but I feel I knew him. I've traveled the world with him within the walls of my living room. Ate supper with him nearly every night. My 6 yr. Old daughter loves him too. I have still not had the heart to tell her that he passed away. Not only because I know she will be heart broken, but also we are healing from one of my best friends also passing this year. 2018 was a bad year for us. But mainly so she can still enjoy him, the way I used to. Now I watch him and it deeply saddens me to know that he is no longer with us. I never met you, but I feel I knew you and you took me places and taught me things I would never be able to go and do on my own. I pray you are at peace now Anthony Bourdain. When I eat pork and drink I will think of you.

interesting fact about that episode, cnn has done virtually no reruns of that episode whereas all other episodes keep getting rebroadcasted on the weekends. now this is a bit conspiratorial on my part but not that far fetched either: the establishment, of which cnn is a part of, doesnt want you to think of iran as place where any normal looking or happy people live they need you think of iran as a hell hole where women are treated like dogs so that if they ever launch a war they can justify it and ABs episode in iran didnt help them paint the picture they want.

I found out as soon as I woke up and burst into tears and cried all day. My father committed suicide and I was the one to find him. Eventually I became a Chef before becoming a stay at home mom. Anthony and Sean Brock are my absolute favorite chefs. I tried to stop crying but couldn’t and went a head and make breakfast for my husband and I and cried while eating too. Cooking has always been my number 1 love. Anthony was an inspiration to many. So honest. So loving. Always willing to listen. Taking people all over the world to see new places they wouldn’t of seen or food they would of never heard of if not for his show. My heart breaks for his family and his daughter. May he forever be in peace now. You were so loved and will be missed by many. 😭😭😭

Ive had deep and lasting bipolar disorder for 25 years. The highs can be fun, but the lows are absolutely crushing. Ive contemplated suicide many many many times. The only thing that keeps me here is my profound belief in reincarnation and in knowing that death is not the end. But a door. And whatever you could not conquer in this life, you will repeat in the next. Your dark side is not something you slay. Its meant to give you a different understanding of existence. Darkness is real. Shake its hand, respect it, and know that the good that exists in you is greater. Its a test used to discover your best self. If you were always happy, you would never stretch. Until you get weary. Stretch. Understand. Empathise. Love. Rest in greatness Bourdain

Not sure anyone can truly understand until they've been there themselves. One of the unfortunate social and societal side effects of this malady. And it is a malady. The first step is recognizing it. Then, fighting it, knowing it's going to be a long, hard battle - possibly lifelong, as you say. The only way to deal with it, I suspect, is to listen to the advice of your friends and stay as close to them as possible.

In my youth I worked for 80 hours a week as a sous, and some years later, the first time I picked up "Kitchen Confidential" I felt like I knew this guy. The rogueishness was especially attractive because it seems to permeate a kitchen working at full speed to make good food. This is only a pale example, but it resonated with me. We served duck a l'orange, and our duck sauce was made from scratch: duck stock, fresh squeezed orange juice, and our secret ingredient -- a big dollop of Grand Marnier. Customers loved it. One day our manager told us to substitute triple sec for the Grand Marnier, said "no one will notice. The Grand Marnier is too expensive!" My chef and I shared a look, agreed to adulterate our fine sauce with crap, and sent him on his way. From then on, whenever we made a new batch of duck sauce, we would serve the manager and the post-lunch wait staff their lunch in a side room, and either I or my chef would keep a lookout on them through the little round window while the other ran behind the bar and poured the big dollop of Grand Marnier into a glass. Then we would run back into the kitchen and make our sauce -- the right way. The people continued to rave about the sauce, the manager thought he was saving money, and we knew we were doing the right thing. It's an insignificant little restaurant story, but I always thought that Tony would have wholeheartedly approved. I will miss him so.

There was a cute sweet girl who lived there with all of us....we called here Angel. On memorial week end she found the 1926 freezer. She climbed into it an shut the door. She was found on the Monday. Dead. She was 19 years old. I can still see her sweet face even today. She died in 1967. ♥

Try as they might, others cannot replicate him or the experience of watching him because they are not the same as him . . .. they don't have his compassion down through his soul to his toes . . .. nor the humility he had when interacting with the regular people in the world. Everyone except some competitors felt like he was their/our friend. So yes, Anthony, you live still in our hearts.

He came from hospitality background, so he deeply appreciated hospitality, no matter how or where it was offered, he accepted it humbly, said thanks and enjoyed it (or at least, pretended to). After reading and watching the interviews with Tony last week speaking about his last shoot--the Hong Kong episode, things seem clearer to me. He had tried for years to get his idol, the legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle, to appear in an episode. Not only did he appear, but he got behind the camera and actually photographed the entire episode. To add to the serendipity, his director had an emergency illness 2 days before the shoot. He asked his girlfriend Asia Argento to step in and direct it. She did. And all this happened in Hong Kong--Tony's favorite location. It was truly the pinnacle of his career. Could it EVER get any better...
I know Tony loved his friends and his family, but I think his career (Not the money nor the fame, but the PASSION for what he did) was his life. He lived life hard and passionatly, yet with great sensitivity, and sometimes that passion can drain you over time--especially when you reach a perceived pinnacle that you fear you may never reach again. I think Hong Kong was, in his mind, as good as it could get, and as good as it was ever going to be.

Almost a year now and every once in a while I still get very sad because I know I’ll never have a chance to meet him now. When I was growing up and trapped alone in a house I desperately wished to escape from, his show helped me leave for hours at a time, opened my eyes to new dishes I could try to make myself and new cultures and history for me to research and learn from. I wish I could tell him how thankful I am that he helped me realize that people, and the stories they have to tell, are the most fascinating and valuable resource this world has to offer.
In every country I visit, no matter how far and often I travel, his approach to life, and his philosophy about taking in all the world has to offer, will never be far from my mind, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this.

Like we were only allowed to see Robin Williams as an actor, so we assumed that that was who he was at all times, making it seems so confusing when someone so visibly happy was actually sad. We all wear certain masks with people and only open up to the ones we trust, so even with close ones maybe you could be the one receiving the layered treatment or the vulnerable one

I come back to this video, years after his passing, and all I've ever loved about the man shines in every video, every episode, and every other chef that he ever shared a meal with. The great Marco Pierre White, Masa Takeyama, Eric Ripier. All of them honor him as a great influence to budding and young chefs. An icon for not only being humble, but for being genuine and authentic. And most importantly, being an enthusiastic and loving friend, who wanted nothing but peace, understanding, and equality between all cultures and all people. Someone who could always make you love and laugh around others, regardless of background or origin. Someone who thrived and existed to bring everyone together and remind them to take in the smallest things and live in the moment to fall in love with the little moments with others.
I miss you, Anthony. I can never express how much of an influence you always were to me, in the kitchen and out. I can't express in words how much you inspired me and everyone about life. How I felt like I was traveling with you, side by side. And to so, so many others. Words can't express how many people, young and old, you taught humility, understanding, passion, and love to. Across countless generations, peoples, cultures, beliefs, and nationalities. I hope you find solace and embrace in your afterlife, and I hope you know how loved you always were. I'm sorry if you felt alone in the end.
Rest in the sweetest peace, Anthony Bourdain. Your legacy will never be able to be matched, and your personality will always be missed across the globe. Much love ❤️

Anyone else really gonna miss his voice? It was good...the way he spoke, the tone. RIP man....such a shame. Life is already so short. But, I suffer from depression and anxiety that is stable with meds, music, love of my children, support, and most of all, I try to be kind to myself, mentally. Cause ALOT of things and ppl in this world are not so kind...

Hope you will find a way to cure your depression! If you like podcasts you can listen to " The hilarious world of Depression" where people who have dealt with depression are talking about their experience,it is informative and funny.(I get it on Spotify) Also for anyone here who is reading this: Do not hesitate to get professional help, depression is serious and it is ok to seek help. You would not self-medicate a broken arm or leg,-and similarly depression is an illness which can be treated by medical/therapetic professionals.

J Gildz i have a full on crush on that man. His swagger, dry sense of humor, his "i don't give a fuck" mentality and how much he just really loved cultures. I watched every single episode of every single show he’s created, and it truly hit me in the gut and made my eyes water. I was honestly heartbroken .
I suffer from depression and while I do imagine myself dying, I don’t want to die. So I completely understand where your coming from. Don’t ever lose the light that’s been keeping you going. ❤️

He was a class on his own. Chef. Philosopher. Traveler. Complicated genius. Drunk and Druggy. but above all a man with a passion for life that was contagious ...truly devastating that he gave up his passion for life by ending his own. Only somebody with deep and dark depression can understand the choice he made. Do not judge him, depression makes you a person who sees NO LIGHT at all. He reached a point where he couldnt take anymore of life. I understand this feeling. I am always suicidal its just a matter of degree. Right now I feel like 30% suicidal but I have been up to 90%. This can change from one week to the next.
I will miss this man immensely. A true loss to the world.

Great tribute to Anthony Bourdain. Thank you Anderson Cooper. This had to be difficult for you because of what you have been through yourself during your life. Our world today seems to be in disarray. Social Media I think plays apart. Sometimes people think they are never good enough no matter how famous or rich they are. I personally think it goes back to a person's childhood never knowing what trauma occurred. Sometimes some people never feel loved and even think that they don't deserve love. Love and prayers to his daughter, friends, and family and to everyone. 🙏💗
